I knew it was none of the 80s songs I was picking but had no idea what modern song it was, so kept throwing up guesses to hear more of the song, to no avail.

First two guesses there's not really anything to hear, so unless you REALLY know the artist i feel like you have no shot. By the 4th there was something significant, but i NEVER listened to this artist so i pulled that shit out of a hat.

like you said the first few seconds dont tell you much unless you are a hardcore fan. once some music played i recognized the song but had no clue who it was lol
I was thinking a whole other genre at first, even thinking possibly the roots, then when I realized what it was I was thinking it was the song that sampled it lol
I really need to start trying to guess more on the first clue. Last 4 or 5 ended up being my first instinct but I couldn't think of the artist or song title. In this case I only looked for the artist but I had the name wrong lol on the second clue I searched for the song and boom.
