Are you really from Atlanta? According to this rapper, probably not

Omeretta the Great
February 22, 2022 at 9:16 am EST
By WSBTV.com News Staff

ATLANTA — Are you really from Atlanta? According to an up-and-coming rapper whose new video has gone viral, you’re probably not.

Rapper Omeretta the Great dropped the song “Sorry Not Sorry” on Instagram on Friday.

In the video, which ironically is filmed in Cobb County, the rapper sings about all the places in metro Atlanta that she thinks are not the real ATL.

“Answer this if you say you from the ‘A,’ right? Which zone are you from? What hood did you live? What hospital bed were you born? Look, I know it sound crazy, but imma ‘A’ baby, I gotta start pulling folks cards,” she sings.

The rapper goes on to say that if you didn’t grow up in the Atlanta Public Schools, system you are not from Atlanta. She also goes on to list all the metro Atlanta locals that are not “Atlanta,” including College Park, Lithonia, Clayton County, Decatur, Gwinnett, Roswell, Forest Park and Lilburn.

The City of Atlanta is relatively small, with a population of just about 500,000 people, but metro Atlanta encompasses 29 counties and more than 6 million people.

But for Omeretta, what qualifies as metro Atlanta is even smaller than the city limits.

“I’m talking about the 1, the 3 and the 4,” she raps, referencing three of the six Atlanta Police Department zones on the southside.

TMZ pointed out that some of Atlanta’s most famous rappers are not native Atlantans under Omeretta’s definition, including Ludacris and 2 Chainz, who are from College Park; Outkast, which hails from East Point and the Migos, who are from Lawrenceville.

The internet had a lot to say about the track:

Always thought it was hilarious how people hold where you were born against you like you had a decision in where you wanted to live as a child.

most of these places are their own cities, so voting will be specific. otherwise, we all do business and pleasure in ATL.

This is also no different than any other big city. The more known city is the marker during discussion since other, smaller places may not be well known.

can't nobody help where they were born or where their parents lived. basically, this is silly.

It's funny, I know people who grew up in Brooklyn and Queens and NEVER have set foot in the Bronx. People tend to stick where they live (everyone goes to Manhattan). Brooklyn/Queens has more crossover.

Rappers from Yonkers, New Rochelle and Mt Vernon always made a point to rep their city in westcheter and not front like they're from one of the boroughs.. Same with LI rappers.. they always tend to rep Strong Island and their specific city out there.. Can't think of any examples of NY rappers fronting on where they live (Prodigy mentioned LI quite a bit so he's not that)

Get all bothered about it. If it doesn't matter that much, then why lie about being from the city in the first place? Claim your small town/suburb. We all got google maps in our pocket now, so it's easy to look up.

hardly anyone is from “Pittsburgh”

when I meet someone from Pittsburgh the next question is “which part”

had a woman get all snarky and say “that aint the city”

then I asked where she is from and responded “that aint the city either”

I also lived on 49th and Bmore, 4th and Tasker.. and didnt feel like it made me anything special when meeting someone raised in Chester, PA.

The whole thing is silly to me.

What do you do for Atlanta besides being from Atlanta? Lol, it’s a child’s argument, on the same level Console Wars (PlayStation vs. Xbox). The millions of people that flow in and out of the airport don’t even know they exist. OutKast, Luda, JD, etc., actually brought revenue here.

Them niggas also be the ones super flexible on the rappers not from here that don’t get the same smoke for not being from here. Gucci and Luda are both not from the state of GA to begin with, but I hear “Dat nigga from Chicago”(also incorrect) for Luda and all this “Zone 6/East Atlanta Santa” shit for Gucci. Jeezy was the holy lord of Macon when “So Icy” came out but now he’s just from Atlanta.

I was in the car with my mom earlier this week and they talked about this song on the gospel station the entirety of this lady’s 4 hour show.
