"Will Cover Raps ever be a thing??"

I’m not talking about those cheesy retro sing song makeovers either…
I wanna hear Busta doing a cover of some Bone Thugs
I wanna hear Chance doing some Heiro

I think he did another cover on a later album too. Didn't seem to catch on in full song format though. I actually appreciated him making it his own too. Like a West Coast version of the song.

So I think we have precedent. Just a matter of it becoming a trend.

maybe a sliiiight variation in delivery allowed...but essentially should be the same song & general groove...

Unless it's something like how The Isley Brothers made ALLLLLLL of the covers they did sound better than the originals lol.... I just don't know if that's even possible or necessary with rap....my gut tells me no.

LOL sorry but - I have no interest at all in that. Not even a superfan like Mos could do DOOM's unique approach to his artistry even a sliver of justice.

I say let that man rest, and leave his classic, amazing work be.

In response to Reply # 0

Covering a classic rap is usually pretty bad, the original depends so much on the RAPPER and their special flavor. hard to capture that magic with anohter voice.

Example: I still can't stand Snoop's Lodi Dodi:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s8rGpHqM_q4

The album; "In tha beginning" had some pretty okay covers and some really bad ones too.: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/In_tha_Beginning...There_Was_Rap

The Roots cover The Show:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GIxKsAI71Tc

See also: Black Thought's live cover of Kool g. Rap's men at Work.

I remember really liking Souls of Mischief's "Make Your Mind Up (rock on remix)" where they each take one another's verses. Opio does A-Plus' verse, Tajai does Opio's verse and A-Plus does Tajai's.

Would probably only be an additional revenue stream for the rights owners of the samples and the labels who own the masters.

When we did "driving down the block" (sampling Master Ace on the hook) we had to have him redo that part of the verse acapella because the original song was STILL in legal limbo for sample clearance issues.

Just think of how many classic songs you were exposed to by a cover only later to find out they were covers which led to even MORE deep dives and discovery and enjoyment of any particular genre.

Like...in essence THIS is what music is supposed to do...continue a cycle of invention, creativity, homage, acknowledgement and bringing new fans into genres they never explored.

I should take back my initial notion that they be straight 1 for 1 covers though...I think some sort of reimagining is allowable...as long as it isn't corny and continues to push boundaries....

in the Fat Joe v. Ja Rule verzuz lol I think yes it should/could be:

https://youtu.be/5DQbRQMNS9U?t=67

It was my fave moment by far and I remember feeling pretty nerdy about enjoying someone's recital of someone else's rhymes *that* much. But why??? That "little italy" line is a classic and one of the few my lyrically amnestic ass has retained over the years lol. She killed it.

I entered this post a bit skeptical, but realized that what she did is essentially what you mean by 'rap cover', and I think you've made a good case. Especially wrt rap's maturity/influence and the justification for having "rap standards" just as there are "standards" in jazz, classical, contemporary guitar, etc.

People already identify classic songs, classic beats, and pay homage by remaking, remixing, etc. What would be wrong with paying homage to classic rhymes by putting one's own flair to the delivery?

I prob would have been indifferent on this topic had I not recently watched that verzuz and loved Remy's cameo so much, tho. So, not sure if I need to see it become a whole subgenre lol. But I think there's space for people who are learning to rap to perform/practice delivering "rap standards" and for really skilled/experienced rappers to pay homage to others by re-delivering classic lines. I agree there's some (potential) entertainment value there.

are typically seen as a combination of the lyric writing and the performance itself.

That's a unique thing to rap. Obviously there are plenty of artists in other genres who write their own songs, but I can't think of ANY other genre in which you are seen as "wack" for not writing your own material. If you do it's a bonus - for example when you here comparisons between similar artists if one does their on writing it's an additional feather in the cap. But it isn't seen as a negative for the artists who don't write their own material.

That fact goes further when you think about rap traditionally - because a performance is seen as having been written by the artist, their entire persona as a rapper traditionally is based around authenticity. You can diss another rapper because they rhyme about selling drugs, homicide, etc. when they didn't actually do those things in real life, but no one is dissing a country or blues singer for singing narrative songs about stuff they never actually did (sometimes also even including similar topics.)

All of that is to say - if you can be seen as "wack" as a rapper for not writing your own rhymes and having everything you say be true, that perception would be even greater for a rapper doing a cover.

Black Thought nailed Kane and G Rap on Boom, and it would play right into their wheelhouse IMO.

Top of my list there would be a cover of Red & Meth's Da Rockwilder. I'd love to see Thought's renditions of them.

I'd like to see a whole double album of that as some "history of hip hop" shit, taking it back to the Furious Five, through LL, Rakim, then Nas, maybe a Wu joint in there, moving up through Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, etc.

I'd love to see a cover of Still D.R.E, I Got Five On It, etc. You could plug them into damn near anything.

MC Lyte covered Spoonie G's "Take It Off" 30 years ago. It wasn't very good.

Kris Kross covered Run-DMC's "Here We Go" and "Together Forever" in the same song. Wasn't very good.

Snoop's done a bunch, from Lodi Dodi to Vapors to Dog's Gonna Get Cha. Most of them haven't been very good.

Only good thing on that "In the Beginning" album was Wu-Tang covering Sucker MC's. Master P's version of 6 N Tha Morning was trash biscuits.

Buckshot doing "I Ain't No Joke" back in like 1997 was decent, but it didn't add anything to do the song.

Hell, there was a whole cover album of NWA's Straight Outta Compton. Want to guess why no one remembers it?
