"Poll question: Did Colin Powell lose all his credibility when he lied?"

Let’s state the facts then discuss.
Yes he knowingly lied about WMD’s in Iraq even if he disagreed in private.
He was chosen as the face of the lie because of his supposed integrity.
Personally I feel like he didn’t realize how far that shit would go but still had the understanding it would end badly.

Colin Powell lying permanently damaged his reputation, sure

But Colin Powell lying more importantly revealed once and for all that ALL the people with that kind of status, even the ones you think have integrity, have been bought and sold and are serving other masters.

There’s been one good guy at that level EVER - Jimmy Carter - and he’s widely accepted as the worst president ever.

Everything I read says Colin Powell was the lone advocate fighting an invasion of Iraq and once he lost that fight he played the good soldier and executed the task that was given to him by the President, convince the UN that it was doing the right thing.

What I think is interesting since I have been thinking about it is that Bush didn't need the UN's blessing to invade. It was a step that Powell insisted upon when he was trying to kill the invasion.

I do think Powell knowingly presented a flimsy case, but I am not sure he presented anything that he thought was flat-out false. I do think that he actually thought there were WMDs in Iraq, we just didn't have strong evidence to show it.

Colin Powell should have resigned. The war MIGHT not have happened if he did. But I think it would have happened anyway, but there would have been more skepticism about it from the start.

IDK. I am not mad at people hating CP for his role in the war. But I can also see how a good person who considers themselves a good soldier could find themselves in the position he was in.

what he did was obviously a terrible thing.
but even if he resigned in protest, the war was still happening.
that's not to excuse his role in expediting it, but some of the rants on here the last 2 days seem to act like Iraq would have never happened if it wasn't for him.
We'd be at war and he'd just be Benedict Colin.. in the car with the Dixie Chicks, Freedom Fries and Michael Moore.

is very admirable but when you do things against your morals or that are morally wrong that cancels it out. I get he was doing his job and being 100% transparent in that position is never going to happen in hindsight the shit was foul and his loyalty and doing his job is just trying to find the silver lining.

Soldier's really aren't supposed to put their morals first. Even if given an illegal order, they aren't supposed to follow their own morals but rather the constitution and rules of engagement.

Call me crazy.

I mean, to be clear you're right on some level - this country has a mix of people who want "stuff," and others who actually care about humans, with some confused folks in the middle who somehow think you can have all of both ?

But I think most of those who criticize people like Powell (i.e. me) don't care so much about "all this stuff," while those who lionize him prioritize material emptiness to societal and human well being. In other words I'd gladly give up a huge chunk of the US' conveniences if I could exchange them for human decency, empathy, and a society that actually valued human life and the longterm wellbeing of society above all else.

What a warped set of "values" (for lack of a better term) the west/colonialism/imperialism has created.

I'd long thought that capitalism was shit but on some level I was still probably stupidly falling for the post-WWII propaganda that even the worst corporations could, during our worst moments, come through and be a vehicle for good, however briefly.

But watching all those "in these unprecedented times ... buy a Toyota !" commercials and hearing pundits drone on about the economy right after COVID hit last year (as well as during the George Floyd protests) really drove home just how little capitalist corporations give a fuck about literally anything else beyond their profit margins.

He failed that test.

I REMEBER that day VIVIDLY.

I thought 'this is bullshit...but if C-Pow says it's true, then maybe it IS true."

The Republican AND the Democrats both RUSHED into that war - and that was based A LOT of him LYING that day.

He lies, it gives EVERYONE a war boner and we spend TRILLIONS of dollars, kill thousands of American, wound over 30,000 Americans, and lord knows how many Americans got PTSD from it.

Not to mention the hundreds of thousands of dead Iraq's. And the boost to Iran. Etc.Etc.Etc.

He could have just said no to giving that testimony. Becuase he knew it was a lie.

Tucker Carlson rewrites Colin Powell's role — and his own — in the campaign to invade Iraq

The death of former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell has ushered in a new wave of revisionist coverage of the role he played in orchestrating the disastrous 2003 invasion of Iraq, with outlets portraying it as simply a regrettable moment in an otherwise exemplary life or characterizing Powell as a passive character.

On Monday’s broadcast of Fox News’ Tucker Carlson Tonight, Tucker Carlson went so far as to present Powell as the one who “knew better” than the “supposedly brilliant, Harvard-educated neocons” of the Bush administration who were attempting to sell the war to the public.

Powell addressed the United Nations Security Council in 2003 to declare the immediate need for intervention, and his now-notorious speech was riddled with false claims about the supposed presence of weapons of mass destruction in Iraq under the control of Saddam Hussein. The address became a crucial nexus in the war on terror, and Powell became the public face of the Bush administration’s campaign to invade a nation under false pretense.

But you don't have to take our word for it. Here's how Tucker Carlson as a co-host of CNN's Crossfire reacted at the time to Powell's 2003 presentation to the U.N. (emphasis added):

PAUL BEGALA (CO-HOST): Using the full force of his considerable persuasive talents as well as satellite photos and intercepted Iraqi conversations, Secretary of State Colin Powell told the U.N. Security Council and the watching world that Iraq has, quote, “An active and systematic effort," unquote, to hide weapons of mass destruction and has given training to al Qaeda terrorists.

Secretary of State Powell was the right man for the difficult job. He is by far, the most respected and trusted figure in America, perhaps the whole world, but his boss, President Bush is now suffering from a full blown credibility crisis. In the latest CNN/Gallup poll, about half of all Americans said they think the Bush administration would present evidence it knew was inaccurate. And a whopping 58 percent said Mr. Bush would even conceal evidence that went against his position to persuade us to go to war in Iraq.

Said Mr. Bush, if we could have reached him for current, I promised in the campaign I wouldn't lie about sex. I never said anything about war. Of course, he never actually said that, I should be clear.

TUCKER CARLSON (CO-HOST): This says — this truly, I say this more in somewhat anger, this is yet Democratic party has no credibility on terrorism or foreign policy. Today we learned...

BEGALA: Because the American people think Bush would lie?

CARLSON: Because, we know today for certain that Iraq has weapons of mass destruction they have chemical and biological weapons. And the question remains what do we do about it? Neither you nor any Democrat I know has the answer to that question.

(CROSSTALK)

BEGALA: Tucker, we've known for 20 years the guys had chemical weapons.

CARLSON: What are we doing, about it, Paul we quote some stupid poll saying people don't believe — I mean, come on.

BEGALA: The question here is the presidents creditability. He wants to lead us into war, and the majority of his countrymen and women are worried that he's lying to us, and for good reason.

CARLSON: That is not the question. The question is there's a lunatic with weapons that could kill the civilized world. What do we do about it. And I await an answer.

(CROSSTALK) CARLSON: I'd be interested in your opposition.

(CROSSTALK)

CARLSON: In his address this morning, secretary Powell warned the U.N. Security Council, quote, “This body places itself in danger of irrelevance if it allows Iraq to continue to defy its will without responding effectively and immediately," end quote. Many in the community responded by proving Powell's point. The French minister from posed doubles or tripling the number of U.N. inspectors in Iraq. Russia's foreign minister made a similar statement, so did China. When the German foreign minister was asked if secretary Powell convinced him, he said, quote, "I'm not an expert."

Saddam Hussein continues to deny doing anything wrong. In a notably puffy interview on British television last night, he told many of the western defenders that his country possesses no weapons of mass destruction, at all. None.

Do you believe it?

Apparently many on the left, do they must because they haven't given any idea of what we should do about it.
If Carlson is looking for someone responsible for selling the catastrophic Iraq War to the American people, he need only look in the mirror.

like I said I rarely agree the mods but being not disrespectful in an actual "RIP" post has been around forever

The fact that you can “well aside from that how was the play Mrs Lincoln” that man is so weird
Fuck him.
It’s not willfully obtuse. The rule is a good rule in general. But to have no exceptions, particularly when it’s not even someone we KNOW is a joke
Its not obtuse to point out that glaring flaw in a rule.

that’s exactly what mean by being willfully obtuse.

You didn’t see anyone “riding for” Herman Cain when he passed last year.

Though it was a mistake for us (or whoever) to have given him any credit to begin with. The people that exert this huge power over our life didn't get it by accident and they definitely didn't get it by merit. They got it because they wanted it, desperately, and would do anything to take it. The lives of regular, working people - here or in Iraq - were never a consideration in any of his decision-making.

So he gets what he wanted, to be powerful and important and therefore to own this stupid giant lie of a war. Millions of lost and destroyed lives and a part of the world that's going to take a century to recover from this and also the absolutely insignificant consequence that people on the internet get to call Colin Powell a liar.

yes, the man had a 60+ year history of service with the US government so anything bad that happened we can pin on him as the "leader"

which means he advised, assisted, and supported the Secretary of Defense. Making him A leader (which is in fact different from THE leader, for those of us who can read) in both the invasions of Grenada and Panama as well as and Airstrike of Libya.

All this shit is easily google-able.

You serve at the pleasure of the Secretary of Defense, who serves at the pleasure of the President. He wasnt "a" leader or "the" leader in the Grenada Invasion. If the President wants the military to do something you advise the best options for success. Powell didnt go to the President and say "i want Grenada and i want it now!"

38. "Legacy of Shame: Colin Powell’s Blood-Soaked Service to the Empire"
In response to Reply # 0

https://www.counterpunch.org/2021/10/19/legacy-of-shame-colin-powells-blood-soaked-service-to-the-empire/

He put it really well here:

Americans have a remarkable ability of sanitizing the crimes of their ruling class. Their lives often seem to eclipse the mountains of corpses on which they stand atop. The regions left in disarray and ruin. The lives and families and hopes that were forever disfigured or shattered. All of that disappears, is explained away, or is designated as a mere footnote when one of the elite dies. The nationalistic panegyrics that are employed are designed to do just that. A kind of novocaine that glazes over eyes and numbs collective memory. But as the late Howard Zinn said: “‘There is no flag large enough to cover the shame of killing innocent people.” And, despite the enormous effort made, that shame cannot be sponged away in death.
