you can go back to even the mid 90s and he was on the blue side on major issues like affirmative action, abortion, gun safety, climate change, healthcare, etc.

i wonder why he even joined the republican party to be honest.

i saw a clip of a news segment of him deciding not to run against bill clinton in 1996 (he polled the best among repubs and was considered the best recruit) and the right of the right was basically torching him as being a phoney and making clear their suspicion that he wasnt even a real republican.
