"Super Bowl halftime show (Dre, Snoop, Em, Mary J., Kendrick)"

LOS ANGELES -- Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Mary J. Blige and Kendrick Lamar will perform for the first time on stage together at the Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show.

The NFL, Pepsi and Roc Nation announced Thursday that the five music icons will perform on Feb. 13 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. Dre, Snoop Dogg and Lamar are Southern California natives.

Dre emerged from the West Coast gangster rap scene alongside Eazy-E and Ice Cube to help form the group N.W.A., which made a major mark in the hip-hop culture and music industry with controversial lyrics in the late 1980s. Dre is responsible for bringing forth rap stars such as Snoop Dogg, Eminem, 50 Cent and Lamar. Dre also produced Blige's No. 1 hit song "Family Affair."

"The opportunity to perform at the Super Bowl Halftime show, and to do it in my own backyard, will be one of the biggest thrills of my career," Dre said in a statement. The seven-time Grammy winner added that their halftime performance will be an "unforgettable cultural moment."

The Super Bowl returns to the Los Angeles area for the first time since 1993. It's the third year of collaboration between the NFL, Pepsi and Roc Nation.

Roc Nation and Emmy-nominated producer Jesse Collins will serve as co-producers of the halftime show. The game and halftime show will air live on NBC.

The five music artists have a combined 44 Grammys. Eminem has the most with 15.

Roc Nation founder Jay-Z said in a statement that their show will be "history in the making."

Dre, Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Blige and Lamar join a list of celebrated musicians who have played during Super Bowl halftime shows, including Beyonce, Madonna, Coldplay, Katy Perry, U2, Lady Gaga, Michael Jackson, Jennifer Lopez, Shakira and most recently The Weeknd.

NFL and Pepsi will join together to support the launch of Regional School #1, a magnet high school in south Los Angeles. It's set to open for students next fall as part of the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The high school is based on the USC Iovine and Young Academy, a program founded by Jimmy Iovine and Andre "Dr. Dre" Young. It will offer an educational model focused on the theme of integrated design, technology and entrepreneurship.

"This effort will help develop and inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs and innovators," said Megan K. Reilly, the L.A. Unified interim superintendent. "We are excited about the additional opportunities this partnership will bring to our students."

Probably won’t care about either team, so at least a brisk run through of some hits will be something to pay attention to.

they wanted to do an all Dre halftime show, and he hasn’t produced a lot for female artists. Besides Mary you have Eve, who isn’t as big of a star (unless they also brought in Gwen Stefani for Blow Your Mind, but that’s a lot for one song.)

With the lineup if they are going the Dre route, Mary will probably just do Family Affair. Basically like a live Verzuz show that isn’t a battle but featuring a producer and a bunch of the artists he’s worked with over the years. They could also have Mary sing hooks for a couple other Dre produced songs.

That just made me remember : Mary did sing the hook on The Message. So they did work together a few times. If I ever knew that Dre did “Not Today”, I had long forgotten it. That song didn’t get a ton of run though. Family Affair was everywhere.

Jay fans insisted he would influence with his "seat at the table".

At least we'll probably have a cool halftime show and Jay's pockets will be straight.

but this idea that people have to stop making money in the NFL because of his actions is a bit melodramatic.

If it wasn’t Jay it would’ve been someone else.

not trying to sound like a GOP asshole but shit, I watch sports for entertainment.

and half the people shitting on the NFL tried to celebrate the NBA for letting the players wear shirts but the NBA forced them to stand for the anthem and no one screamed boycott the NBA.

The NBA didn't force players to do shit. They have more power than any other pro athletes, they choose when and what they want to take a stand about.

In response to Reply # 37

The NBA issued a memo to teams late Friday reminding teams of the rule that requires players and coaches to stand for the national anthem, according to ESPN’s Zach Lowe. The memo instead listed other ways that players could support fellow athletes who have been protesting racial injustice and police brutality in the NFL and other sports.

in 2018 Mark Cuban on ESPN

In a live interview on ESPN’s SportsCenter Thursday afternoon, Dallas Mavericks governor Mark Cuban said that the NBA should adapt its national anthem rule and give leeway to its players like the NFL and European soccer leagues are during these changing times.

With Black Lives Matter and numerous social justice movements growing in popularity and momentum in the United States, and NBA players at the forefront of these efforts, Cuban was asked by ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap if the league should update a policy adopted nearly 40 years ago.

“Hopefully we’ll re-adapt and hopefully we’ll allow players to do what’s in their heart,” the billionaire said, “whether it’s holding an arm up in the air, whether it’s taking a knee. “

A rule that the league enacted in 1981 states that “players, coaches and trainers must stand and line up in a dignified posture along the foul lines.” In 2018, NBA commissioner Adam Silver said there were no plans to change the league’s stance on this issue. Cuban clarified that players taking a knee or raising an arm or fist was not an issue of disrespect to the flag, anthem or the country.

NBA was rigid as fuck in 2017/18 when this all started.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nba/2018/05/31/adam-silver-nba-anthem-rule-different-dialogue-than-nfl/662356002/

—————

its always funny to see people justify why one sport is better than another at this type of stuff. I distinctly remember asking people why they had no issues with the NBA forcing players to stand when the Kaep protest started and it was always that bullshit excuse of the NBA “letting players do other things like wear shirts or express themselves”

total bullshit because they couldn’t protest the anthem back in 2017 and 2018 and no one kneeled until Floyd was murdered.

They'll likely do snippets of most songs to pack more into the setlist.

Start out in the NWA era with something like Straight Outta Compton and Express Yourself. Bring out Cube as a surprise guest.
Bring on Snoop to do a couple Death Row/Chronic joints like G Thing.
Maybe go into California Love with a quick Pac tribute.
Then go to the Aftermath era, bring out Em to do snippets of Forgot About Dre, Snoop for Still DRE and Next Episode.
From there bring out Mary for Family Affair, maybe a surprise guest slot from 50 for In Da Club.
Then have Kendrick bring it home with a couple joints at the end. I'm not sure what they'd go with since I don't believe Dre directly produced anything, but the albums were on Aftermath...

TDE just wouldn't let him slap his name on shit cuz the dynamics were different/industry had changed.

The Dre myth baffles me. Like...the real deal on Dre has BEEN known, but everyone pretends

"He orchestrates!" yeah, so does fucking Puff.

Not to mention the abuse and his homeless kid....I never get the Dre worship. And I came up on West coast rap....

and I don’t understand the Dre producer thing unless he straight jacked people and didn’t pay them.

Is it really any different than song writers who help Rhianna write a hit? Its called a Rhianna song but there are 8 people getting writing credit.

I used to be a back pack and on some “they didn’t make that by themselves!” but once I got hip to the game I realized that is how its done on a ton of huge hits.

In response to Reply # 24

So I dont know why people like Dre and Kanye need an army of beatmakers

I can understand collaboration live musicians and another producer etc. but if your process to make an album is to ask everyone in hip hop to give you music , then as a fan, that makes me think less of you as a talented artist

I have nothing against Madlib and love his sound but I totally understand why mega producers work with tons of people.

No idea as far as how much work Madlib puts out compared to Dre but if Madlib was given more resources and we found out he had more hands in the kitchen would you think less of his work?

depends, if has one or two co producer, probably not...

but if he said Madvillainy was made with input from Q-Tip, No ID RZA, Pete Rock, DJ Premier etc.. similar to Kanye with My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, then yes, I would think less of his work

Dre has never been just a "slap his name on stuff" type of producer. To equate him with Puff is disingenuous. Dre has his own distinctive sound that you can hear shine through regardless of collaborators. From back in the day when he was doing his own programing, to the way he worked with live musicians throughout the years to do ACTUAL orchestrations, to the specific way he mixes drums, and the way he manages the sonic space.

People in the industry don't worship and/or admire Dre because he's been stealing beats for 35 years.

These half-time shows are always a spectacle rather a good live performance

What are they going to do? Have Kendrick flying through the air with wire cables?

In response to Reply # 32

Everyone I knew who tried that shit didn’t last a month.

I remember VSB dude typing about the Shazier injury while also trying to say “the game was on in my room but I wasn’t watching it”

that nigga from the Burgh, I KNOW his ass never stopped watching.

and it was the season the Eagles won the SB so I knooooow all them Philly cats who swore off the NFL tuned in.

and OKS has a bunch of people on some “this is why I’m almost done with the NFL” anytime there is an injury.

People who actually boycott don’t spend all damn day trying to convince you they are boycotting.

these half time shows are done for ratings

so if you watch it, you basically help the NFL.

if you truly don’t want to support the NFL you would skip this show.
