The Fugees are Reuniting to Take ‘The Score’ on a World Tour This Fall

MUSIC - 7 HOURS AGO

ZO
Zo is a staff writer at Okayplayer

The Fugees reunion tour will launch with a secret show in NYC tomorrow night.

The Fugees are celebrating the 25th-anniversary of their classic sophomore album, The Score, with their first reunion in 15 years.

Confirming the rumor mill chatter, the group has announced a string of fall and winter 2021 shows across multiple continents. The tour will launch with a pop-up show at an undisclosed location in NYC on September 22nd. From there, the marathon will pick up again in Chicago on November 2nd, moving on to Oakland, Los Angeles, Atlanta, Miami, Newark, and Washington D.C. before jumping across the pond to close out the set in Paris, London, and a pair of shows in Nigeria and Ghana, respectively.

“I decided to honor this significant project, its anniversary, and the fans who appreciated the music by creating a peaceful platform where we could unite, perform the music we loved, and set an example of reconciliation for the world,” said Ms. Lauryn Hill in a press release. “As I celebrate 25 years with the Fugees, my first memory was that we vowed, from the gate, we would not just do music we would be a movement. We would be a voice for the unheard, and in these challenging times, I am grateful once again, that God has brought us together,” Wyclef Jean added.

how dare you make an issue out of her being late to an event that was scheduled well in advance and attended by customers who paid a lot of money to support.

we should all be ashamed for inconveniencing her.

...seems pretty dicey. It strikes me that the US spots also hold at least 17,000, but mostly close to or over 20,000. Does the group's name REALLY ring out like that anymore to put that many asses in seats? I'm going to hazard a guess that they're going to need a top notch opening act to help fill those spots.

I'd go just for them, if I could, just bc it's historic

But something tells me acts who would pair wonderfully musically

are not necessarily the same as those who would pair wonderfully on a commercial tip

I have zero knowledge/experience about tour and concert production tho lol

And potentially a recipe for half-full shows.

When Lauryn went on tour with Nas four-five years ago, she played in front of crowds of 8,000 to 10,000. Now, after little to no new music since, in the time of COVID, the idea of booking The Fugees in spots that seat 20,000 on a month and half notice could well blow up in their face.

Prince could do something like this. Maybe Sade. I don't know if the Fugees still have that kind of pull.

But I dunno - nostalgia is selling right now. But I guess we'll see. Major cities makes sense - O2 arena is a stretch probably, but they should be fine in LA/Miami/NJ/NYC

6 oclock the next day she was roaming the streets picking flowers in front of a burnt out building.

her reply: “oh, we have a show?”

nigga!!!!

I bet it looked like we kidnapped her when we scooped her up in the van

a portion of the proceeds were going towards reconstruction in Haiti

given the horrible year it's had and Wyclef and Pras being two of the highest profile Haitian entertainers globally

not a knock at all if the shows are just for them tho

just would have been a nice bonus

I barely got in. Didn’t have a ticket. Went to the venue to try getting one but the show was sold out.

Ran into a dude from work that was waiting to get in. For some reason, he decided he didn’t want to go anymore. So I gladly copped his ticket at face value.

A full tour is gonna be similar if not worse. I’m probably gonna go but I’m assuming I’m gonna be sitting in the Forum with a DJ spinning for far too long waiting for the lights to come down which doesn’t sound all that fun now that I’m near 40.

But I’m a sucker.

Again, not all decisions are good ones. You seem to be under the impression that a conscious decision inoculates one from being a sucker. Quite the contrary, it is often when one makes a conscious decision to do something they have reason to believe will not turn out well that we MOST use that term.

>fuck outta here with that condescending bullshit

Fuck outta here with your poorly examined, and wholly unnecessary reply

Unlike you, I have no problem admitting when I spend my time poorly. This was a poor use of time, we all do it. I don't know why you felt me merely recording that was 'condescending' as opposed to 'accurate.'

wife had to work so we knew we would be a little late but we were still chill mode thinking it would be the typical show that starts a little late due to being a superstar

Ummm.. joke was on us. 5 songs later he was like “Thank You Charlotte!!!”

he still did the 45 minute encore but we were mad af at ourselves. Ended up going to the next show in Greensboro and got there mad early.

Shows start on time these days so anyone waiting for 3 hours is truly a super fan. I would prolly stay just to boo her ass.

what shows folks have been to that even started on time

Especially in hip hop..??

Bc I feel like I haven't even been to a hip hop show that hasn't just started whenever

I also don't interpret the start times as indicators of when the acts will start, more like the time we're supposed to try to be there

Going to a show is kinda the equivalent of going to the club in my eyes

Like, I basically just write the whole evening off and so long as the performance occurs between when doors open and the venue closes I'm good

I mean, would folks here go to a club with their friends/spouse and tap a promoter angrily on the shoulder like "Ummm, excuse me, it said on the flyer Lil Ma would be hosting VIP by 11PM" lol

Just seems like ppl got older and expected hip hop to evolve along with their minute-by-minute working parent schedules. Not sure why lol

Started on time.

Charlotte does not play. I dont think I have ever been to a show here that didn’t start on time. That Prince show shocked me so I’m always on time now.

We missed some of Kendricks set because the line was moving slowly.

I actually think a lot of major acts start on time these days because venues are strict when it comes to ending shows die to liquor license laws and shit.

From what I hear most Lauryn shows start late as hell and then are cut short and she tries to blame the venue.. this aint the 90’s Lauryn.

which, in that case, wasnt only a FU to the fans, but also to MOTHER FUCKING GRACE JONES who was the ACTUAL headliner going on after her.

she started late as hell, a few songs in they turned on the lights, cut all the mics, and she still "sang" a few songs into the void even tho no one could hear her. It was actually kinda soothing to see her up there making a fool of herself at that point TBH

Beyonce' shows are usually 2-3 hours late but when she comes out she gives a full SHOW and most of her fans forget how long they wanted lol

none

This guy posted a play-by-play of how the night went and said attendees were informed/knew/expected the show was supposed to start 9-930ish, that a dj came on around 830 and they came out a little after 10. So more like a ~1hr wait:

https://twitter.com/cdiggi1/status/1440886635311288320

And the few clips/captures circulating look fire! That same Fugees energy. Crowd super-engaged. They sound and look great. MLH lacing the mic in that couture. What's to hate?

Those of you in major centres with the means to go/travel for one of these dates are so lucky

i just said they made niggas wait for 3+ hours for a shortened preview show.

a lot of people mentioned the wait (which is how i even knew about it).
https://twitter.com/deray/status/1440894143312670722
https://twitter.com/OfficiallyIce/status/1441036371909484546

clearly the wait was an issue for a lot of folks,

a lot said they really enjoyed the actual performance once they did kick off (i mean…they are fugees fans after all).

im not sure why you felt the need to do damage control or post a tweet thread from some random twitter account with 3k followers but ok lol.

idgaf either way. theres a post here about the fugees tour. i updated it. people can move forward accordingly.

its not like this is an aberration lol.

go buy some tickets if waiting a few extra hours on a weeknight isnt a big deal to you lol.

just convince yourself that a 3 hour wait is really a 1 hour wait and you should be fine lol.

if it’s already like this at a small kickoff show…i’m sure things will be a lot better in the middle of a multi city tour with a group that certainly has no past history of inner turmoil and drama lol.

That's a pretty liberal usage of the term "micromanage" don't you think ? I don't think it's micromanaging to expect that the artist I've paid hard earned money to see will respect us as fans just enough to not show up nearly 4 hours after I was told by that very artist that they'd be on stage.

That some are okay with this?

In the year of our lord 2021, getting hyped over people willing to wait to see a free show is pretty odd.

KIM

I wouldn't do it. Not at this age, and certainly not in the middle of a fucking pandemic.

But 10 years ago? Shit probably. Just have some drinks and chill.

Granted 3 hours is excessive, but I have literally never been to a show that started on time. Ever.

So if one were to set their own expectations for a Fugee show and went, why are you and Reeq worked up about it?

As far as them not playing the whole album? a) It was a free warm up show so maybe it will change and/or b) again, Ive seen it often where "playin an album" doesn't actually = playing an album in full.

For the record, I've seen nothing but praise for the show online as well.

It really does seem like people are just itching to shit on Lauryn...which again, just don't go. No reason to get annoyed with those who are willing to, though.

I'd say the people flying around this post telling others to "fuck off" and breathlessly defending this bullshit are the ones worked up.

Anyway at no point have I told anyone how to spend their time. What I'm pushing back on is people bending over backwards and twisting themselves into pretzels to make excuses for Lauryn and this disrespectful behavior. Cuz even people who are willing to take the risk complain about it.

>Granted 3 hours is excessive

^ my point exactly. Literally all you needed to say.

Honestly asking- I missed it.

And I’d say your amount of replies about a
show you didn’t even go to seems pretty worked
up man.

Nothing but love for you brew but you sound like
a grumpy old man in here.

Who gives a shit if people are ok with Lauryn’s
behavior??

Why does it matter to you? You weren’t even there.

Kfine in particular is cool with it, and you and Reeq
won’t let it go.

It’s weird.

And your point isn’t that 3 hours is excessive.

Your point is that everyone should agree with you,
which isn’t like you.

And like I said, 10 years ago? I’d probably be ok
with it. Have some drinks and mingle.

Either way- 99% of shows start late.

Lauryn starts extra late. Literally everyone knows.

A lot of people are ok with that.

You aren’t. But why are you so mad about it and
why do you want to clown/convince those who
disagree?

You're being awfully critical of someone who wasn't at the show for ... someone who also wasn't at the show. *That's* what's weird.

Not really adding much here dogg.

Like many here I've been present at one of her "shows" like 6 or 7 years ago, where my wife and I waited for 3 hours and ended up with about a 45 minute show.

And I've since taken part in several discussions about Lauryn Hill's disrespect for her fans on this board, and will continue to criticize her for it whenever the opportunity arises.

It's a message board. This is what we do. Why are you acting like a new guy.

Instead, you are in here crying about setlists and your hard earned money like YOU WERE FUCKING THERE

Why can't you answer those questions?

Thats it.

Instead you play dumb.

Even told me the only thing I should have said was the one sentence you agreed with me on.

Not to mention ranting about hard earned money and shit- going full Karen.

I saw her years ago and it was the textbook Lauryn show. 2 hours late, 45 minute performance.

Just curious if she's ever stated why she can't show up to the function on time. The function that people pay a lot of money for and go out of their way with things like transportation arrangements, babystitters, time off work etc.

And making people wait around three hours longer in an indoor venue during a panny is a REAL shitty thing to do.

It’s like Robert Glasper stated: You haven’t done enough to act the
way that you do, and she didn’t produce or write the music for her
only hit album. She took credit for creativity that she didn’t implement.

And compound that with the fact that she mistreats the musicians that she
hires, and will cut their pay with no justifiable reason for doing so, makes
her an unprofessional, fraudulent, narcissistic artist.

Why anyone would continue to support her as an artist is mind boggling.

Lack of material is a knock. But she was/is extremely talented, and carried two iconic albums.

Frankly I don’t care about that rest of that. She was a great rapper and could sing. Could give a damn about who arranged what.

Wyclef wrote her rhymes and taught her how to rhyme, as well
as create the music on all the fugees albums.

And her entire solo album was produced, written and engineered
by other creatives, but she took credit for all of it.

Patrice Rushen/ Teena Marie ( she even jacked her shit), she is not ..
now those are/were TRUE talented artists.

This entire post could be applied to a hip hop "legend"

Dude hasn't made a beat since the early 90s.

Puts his name/brand on shit. Takes credit. Etc etc.

I really wish yall could see the double standards you are applying here.

you've seen this over and over with Summer Walker, Naomi Osaka, Simone Biles etc etc

Black women can't show up in the world flawed or else its "well maybe this isn't for you then"

that's some bullshit

If you don't want to wait for her anxiety to ease enough for her to come out onstage, fine. Then don't. But many don't mind waiting. Let them

there is no judgement to be passed around for any of that.

Time is relative. we all choose to spend it however we do. Mofos will stand on line for 5 hours for a sneaker drop but mad cuz Lauryn is late

pass to steal and rip people off. Naomi and Simone don’t steal from people
or mistreat people, so using them as examples are extremely poor takes.

Lauryn Hill steals money from the fans that support her, and she
financially manipulates the musicians that she hires. Those individuals
are black women and black men, and they have families to support.

Puffy, Birdman, and any other black man who financially rips off musicians, and
Illegally obtains music ideas and concepts, don’t get a pass from being criticized
or reprimanded, so why should Lauryn Hill?

Using “the black woman is always persecuted” card is a total cop-out when
accessing Lauryn Hill’s practices and actions in the music business. This isn’t
an issue of sexism. This is simply an issue of a person consciously duping
and deceiving others to solely generate profits and acclaim for themselves.

“ it is easier to fool people than to convince them that they have been fooled.”

-Yes, I'll be annoyed as fuck over them coming on four hours late, if that's how it plays out. I'll also be disappointed if I don't get The Score. I want that whole thing.

-Yes, I'll still be excited to be there, seeing them live, surrounded by others who love and revere The Score as much as I do.

Both will be true for me.

Lauren is a goddamned hip hop God IMO, limited material be damned. I'm certainly not a fan of the inner workings of her business relationships.

Those allegations are what they are and the scrutiny is warranted, to whatever degree you find them credible

But the fact is, I love all manner of flawed and, in some respects, problematic artists. I overlook all kinds of personal flaws because the artistry of these people have touched me in some significant way.

The late start thing IS a valid issue. But it is, IMO, no different from going to see a comic you like, but who touches on shit you absolutely don't like: if you know who you're going to see, you're going to get all of them, warts and all.

It's ok to not enjoy the show, or parts of the show, for whatever reason.

It's ok to enjoy the show and have looser expectations.

It's too to have opinions on aspects of the shows, as reported, whetehr or not you've attended.

I dunno. I read this battle in here, and just don't get it.

As far as I can tell, everyone is talking past one another.

I just don't get the battle going on in here.

the "battle" i'm waging (i can't speak for anyone else) is I don't like the assumption that she doesn't care about her fans

i don't like the dismissal of her own admitted anxiety as if she's lying and is really just purposely saying fuck you to her fans

accept her explanation for why she's late then just go or don't go

of course lateness its a valid critique. it always is regardless of the situation

but don't act like she just shouldn't perform at all just because she has this particular flaw.

that's it. and i'm done w/this post.

Lauren is the God! I have a reverence for her and her work that's on par with anyone else I can think of. So to a degree, I get the protective responses. Personally i think the whole post is weird amd nobody- you included- made much of an effort to hear what the other was saying, which is a shame, because everyone more or less has a reasonable take.

That is, except LStah- and he's up there trying to diminish Lauren's contributions. She's unquestionably the main attraction in the Fugees, and he's talking about how Clef taught her how to rhyme.

It's interestingly that he's the one in here going off the deep end, and then tried to single you out.

I fucking hate this post and you're all assholes because I'm a Fugee/Lauren mark, lol. But this shit is just a garden variety "well, that went off the rails fast" trainwreck. Nobody's coming for anyone's neck.

That said, LStah singling you out is some bullshit.0

Brew is consistently diplomatic, and tends to fall back when he's shown to be wrong or even reasonably questionable.

None of that means he doesn't have disagreements. But Brew doesn't even hold onto shit like that.

Brew went at it with a poster I won't name, because I'm not castinf aspersions, just saying the gist of what happened. But the poster got extra with it and then went andgot extra in a very good, very long (and somewhat personal) Brew post. It got one of the better longstanding posts locked. The poster apologized, Brew accepted and they both KIM.

He's such a weird one to come at with this tact.

That's a night and day difference from "on 10 all the time".

Yes, in fact. That signal is "the actual things you say, all the goddamn time".

But by my count, I've responded to two of your posts, in two days.

That's not very many.

That said, this whole post is a trainwreck, and Brew's not being aggressive or combative- just disagreeable, and a little snarky. Like most people in the post.

There's absolutely no good reason to single him out. Or anyone, really.

He literally is one of the most chill posters on here.

So it was weird to seem him being petty and essentially clowning people for thinking differently than he does.

He's not the petty one. I am. I have that track record. LOL

Brew is the nice guy.

I don't think he really gets how he comes across here- as a white dude hanging on to anger over the Black woman who made him wait.

That was weird to see- as was him just not accepting that Kfine is okay with waiting. It was...weird.

I guess the lesson here is never leave Brew's wife waiting for shit. It's a touchy issue.

However, many of the dates that were put on sale had very light ticket sales, which probably contributed to the decision to cancel.

The Fugees were never as popular as people think.

the run was shirt because they broke up.

if Lauryn didn’t have a 15 year history of shitting on playing customers this tour would’ve been huge.

of course, Wyclef playing with her heart also didn’t help the situation

They had to be very popular to sell 7M albums. Even in the late 90s.

But because they never recorded together ever again, I don't think the group member's legacy as The Fugees endured like other artists or groups.

Lauryn and Clef are both more known for their solo careers than the work they did as The Fugees. I think that's why the brand of The Fugees is negated somewhat.

...and in 1996 there were so many albums as good or better that dropped. ...they didnt really have fans before "the score" dropped ..by the time they were getting recognized (killing me softly) they were about to break up ..we really never knew them as a group ..even their solo careers only lasted another album each for clef & lauren (lol pras)

you need all the people who remember going when they were in high school

and if your entire run as a group only lasted a couple of years that's just not that many people

no matter how many albums you sold
