Non-professional environment: * Situation in which we are a clear minority - nod up. * Situation in which Black people are majority and we know each other - nod up. * Situation in which Black people are majority and we don't know each other - no nod needed.
Professional environment: * Someone you know, nod up, unless you're a newer employee then nod down. * Someone you don't know, follow the lead of whoever nods first - EXCEPT: * If you are someone who is in management or more experienced, if a newer Black employee nods down, you should nod up at that point to make them feel more comfortable. It's like an unsaid "We in here?" "Yep we in here, no need to code switch. You good, let me know anything you need."

Because if you don't nod back in response (specifically in a professional environment) it's an unspoken way of saying "hey - don't do that brotha brotha stuff with me...I ain't like you. Matter of fact I'm uncomfortable with there being more negros at this job. I'll backstab you FIRST chance I get. HE AIN'T WORKING, BOSS!!!!"

there was no one else in hte restaurant but my table and his. I stared at him until I got eye contact and gave him the nod (Nod Down) and he gave it back. White folks at my table missed the whole thing. Very cool moment.

He avoids my gaze. I still acknowledge him. I don't notice it if a black man is with any other race. But for some reason, black men dating white women do not want to lock eyes with black women.
At the playground, I see these men and their kids will come to play with my daughter (black), over other non-black kids. If your own kid wants to be in the presence of black women and girls, yet your black ass can't muster up the strength to acknowledge a black woman with a nod or hello, you my friend are a Tom!
