"Russell Westbrook wears a long pleated skirt (dress)."
Tue Sep-14-21 06:29 PM by allStah

The purpose of fashion is to set trends and generate profits. It has nothing to
do with functionality, so images and styles are promoted to lure and stimulate
the public to purchase and wear the items.

At one point in life, I used to be heavy into fashion, but it was classic 80s
-2000s fashion, where brands were identified by their look as opposed
to placing huge logos and symbols on fabric. Fashion used to be less about
sexuality and more about expression and a sense of style.

Now I feel fashion is being used to get people to exist a certain way instead
of simply looking a certain way.

In the black community, Russell Westbrook is an iconic athlete, who is well
revered for his actions on and off the hardwood. I don’t think him wearing
a dress is a positive representation of a male figure, and it makes a mockery
of black men of this generation.

Here is the photo of him in the skirt.

Is a really big deal.

Because he may inspire other men who may want to wear a cloth around their waist, that also covers both legs.

That's a very serious issue.

Personally, I have no desire to wear a single cloth that covers both legs. I much prefer cloth that splits and covers each leg individually.

So I just don't wear the one that's covers both legs in a single cloth.

But I hear you. This is a serious problem and men who choose to be themselves are a danger to the whole rigidly held standards of gender identity thing.

Because if there's one thing that's REALLY harmful and detrimental to society, it's people being able to exist as their whole self in ways that's cause no demonstrable harm to anyone.

Those people are super dangerous.

That’s why you didn’t see dudes with pink or ‘girly, colors. People now see that as silly. Folks dress differently now. Not a big deal.

How is this different than a woman wearing a mens blazer? Is she not a good rep for women?

to me and projects power/dominance

This causes me to find it's closest parallel in the West, men with a towel wrapped at the waist after a shower, extremely sexy

Even the most doddery potato-shaped fool can transform into Tyson Beckford in my eyes if I catch him brushing his teeth in a towel lol

You need to decolonize your fashion sense man! Black men on the continent have been tying cloth at the waist since forever

(Maybe RW could skip the pleats next time tho lol)

Shirtless too. Seems quite comfortable, and my jawns got room to breathe when it's hot. Kinda wack how it's "weird" for a man to dress like that in the US, espeially in the really-hot southern states.

With all that said, Russy's outfit kinda looks like something a 17yo young lady from the suburbs would wear for a weekend trip to the mall.

just like I cannot speak on the behalf of women.

So your opinion doesn’t count in this situation. You will never
be able to identify with the nature or principles of a man,
and vice versa.

after men (and especially Black/African men), pointing out that the sartorial choice you think looks so emasculating can actually have the exact opposite effect and even activate said lust?

If you choose to limit (Black) masculinity to Victorian sensibilities that's your choice. You don't have to tho lol

Bc as others have also said: there's actually a far longer, richer, and totally normalized history across the globe of men wearing cloths around the waist/wrappers/sarongs/kilts/togas/tunics etc - or as you call them skirts and dresses. Men wearing pants/trousers is a relatively recent phenomenon with origins in Europe and Asia.

Not an opinion just facts!

2. your oppressive version of what Black men can and can't be is YOUR problem and not theirs. Every Black man gets to wear whatever clothing he feels good in without the need to be concerned about what some dusty gatekeeper thinks

3. Black muslim men wear long gowns as a part of their religious attire, without a peep from anyone.

4. no one is forcing you to wear what you don't want to wear so mind your business.

But we're also not so hopelessly conditioned and insecure that we're uncomfortable and intimidated by those who *are* doing that, or literally anything else they want to do or wear that doesn't impact us.

Lot of folks in here need to grow up.

Exactly.

If I don't want to wear a dress, neither should he or any other man.

Because my tastes, preferences, likes, and interests should definitely be applied to those who are not me, because I am the barometer for what other people should and shouldn't do.

The point of the sarcasm in response to the statement above is, what *I* would do is completely irrelevant.

Whether or not I'm interested in rocking any of that has nothing to do with anything. I don't have to want to wear a dress to not have an issue with another man being himself and wearing whatever the fuck he wants.

2. "Say yes to the dress ass....SMH"

What's constructive about that?

I gave a perfectly reasonable response to that nonsense.

If you find it insulting to tell people with backward, myopic, antiquated views that they're backward, myopic, and antiquated, you have it backward.

If backward ass people don't want their backward views called out, they need to either keep their backward ass views to themselves, or change their backward ass views.

But it's by no means an "insult" to call that out for the spade it is.

Your little rant here is funny, considering you haven't said a word on the topic, as far as I can tell.

Either engage on the topic or run along.

Your whole post was about a person with a penis, who is not you, wearing that fabric in a way that you don't like, but causes absolutely no harm to anyone.

You don't have to mention genitals for it to be crystal clear that this is entirely about genitals, specifically the fact that the Russ is wearing a garment that is, in America, traditionally worn by people with vaginas, not a penis.

Your entire post is about a person with a penis wearing a garment you think should only be worn by people with vaginas.

a man with a penis wore a dress.

Since you completely dismissed kfine's perspective because she's a woman, I'm sure you'll have no issue discussing the meat of your own topic with a man.

So what's the issue with Russ's dress, exactly?

Can you articulate the real, tangible, actual problem?

Can you discuss the harm this is causing, and in what way it's causing harm?

I was in a conversation with the other poster in regards to my drawls comment.

And I already spoke on why it isn’t proper or functional attire for a male
human being. It doesn’t provide support for a man’s genitals, and it restricts
forward and backward motion because it is not aerodynamic, thus limiting
a man from properly exerting himself.

If you don’t own or wear one, then you can’t speak in defense of a man wearing
a dress. So don’t even try it, because it’s not part of your wardrobe, because you
no damn well a man shouldn’t wear a dress.

So whatever argument you present in support of a man wearing a dress is fruitless.

I'll rephrase; do you have an actual good argument?

Something rational or reasonable?

>It doesn’t provide support for a man’s

What do you think underwear does?

and it restricts
>forward and backward motion because it is not aerodynamic,
>thus limiting
>a man from properly exerting himself.

Exerting himself in what way?

So i take it that you're equally deeply concerned with a woman's ability to exert herself in a dress as well?

>If you don’t own or wear one, then you can’t speak in

Yes, I can. In fact, I have. But I'll play. By this line of thinking, as a man who presumably also doesn't wear a dress, you can't speak against it

So don’t even try it, because it’s not part of
>your wardrobe,

It doesn't need to be in my wardrobe.

because you
>no damn well a man shouldn’t wear a dress.

No, I don't know that. In fact, I completely disagree with that.

You still haven't made a single reasonable argument for whys

>So whatever argument you present in support of a man wearing a
>dress is fruitless.

I don't need to argue to support it. YOU need to present a reasonable argument against it, which you have not done.

You made the claim. It's on you to support that claim with good evidence and sound reasoning.

At best, you've conveyed reasons why you wouldn't wear one, and are now projecting your personal reasons onto all men.

i had a pretty wtf reaction when a friend showed me that pic the other day, but we mostly just kinda chuckled it off like we don't get this generation, and moved on.

it's nothing that necessarily upset me, or that i spent any time thinking about.

It's easy for folks to say "What's it to you?" when they are not a group of men who have been defined by this very country as "not men", feminine, thugs, predators, (pseudo)scientifically classified as rapists, raped by slavers etc etc.

These snarky replies, especially from white males in here, display either a lack of historical awareness or the much more common white lack of concern/ flat out denial of Black people's history (men specifically in this case). There shouldn't be one America on this board who can't at least understand where you're coming from, given America's historical track record with Black men, even if they disagree with you.

The truth is that the struggle to define ourselves as men in America is one that persists, whether it's flat out rebellion against traditional, white patriarchal ideas masculinity or trying to live within such rules without being KILLED for doing so.

I say that so say that while Russell's expression of his Black masculinity is valid, so is your Black critique and concern for the way Black masculinity has been and continues to be stifled, attacked, abused and coerced by white patriarchal forces.

In other words, I ain't mad at cha. You or him really. It's shit both of yall don't control that decides what's the dominant image of Black men. Someone pointed out the other day that the NBA went nuts when Iverson was rocking durags, braids and baggy clothes. They implemented a dress code and say 'NO SIR! This will not fly in our league.' Yet, they don't care if ya boy rocks a dress. So like I said, Black men don't really control their image... not in that space anyway.

I'm sensitive to overstepping, so I want to be clear that I'm asking because I'm genuinely interested in your perspective and want to gain insight; I am not being snarky @ all ...

re: this:

"so is your Black critique and concern for the way Black masculinity has been and continues to be stifled, attacked, abused and coerced by white patriarchal forces."

Couldn't allStah's "critique and concern" possibly be perceived as him doing the white patriarchal forces' work that you mentioned for them, on some level ? In other words, he's trying to police what Russ is wearing, too, and trying to define what *he* thinks masculinity (and more specifically, Black masculinity) should be, not just for himself, but for someone else (and, based on his commentary throughout this post (i.e. "you know damn well a man shouldn't wear a dress), everyone else, not just Russ and not just Black men).

As far as I'm aware, Russ chose that outfit himself. He's always been outwardly expressive with his clothing choices, unique, different. He's setting the tone, not the other way around. So wouldn't allStah's critique be somewhat regressive, or do you think it could at least be reasonably viewed that way ?

I want to triple-clarify that I'm asking with genuine curiosity about your perspective, not trying to trap you or anyone at all. I just think that you have tapped into an interesting and important conversation about the overlapping of gender norms/expectations and racism in this country and want to flesh it out a little bit.

81. "The OP is shaming Russ for controlling his own image. "
In response to Reply # 73

That's what's actively happening right here, right now, in this room.

All the shame in here is being directed at Russ, for controlling his own image in a way that conflicts with what he and others in the room deem unacceptable to them.

And while I do understand the history you outlined, the fact is, this is not exclusive to Black men. Men, in America, on the whole, are routinely shamed for not adhering to traditional (ahem: white, colonial) standards of masculinity.

And on both accounts, Russ is being shamed, here in this room, right today, for not adhering to that.

THAT is what is being addressed.

And let's keep a hundred: The entire lane of the OP is shaming Russ for controlling his own image, because LStah doesn't like it, and because he thinks there's a separate agenda attached.

The OP implies that Russ, and other men who make similar fashion choices, aren't doing so as them simply looking the way they want to look, but are trying to cause others to "exist a certain way"- as though these choices are not and cannot be an expression of their true selves.

The entire post is based on one Black man shaming another Black man for adhering to his own preferences and choices.

But again: this is not at all exclusive to Black men. Not even close.

White men, Latino men, are also up in arms over this and any other supposedly feminine choices made by men in general.

The inescapable fact is that this is about men demanding adherence to outdated, narrow, and entirely arbitrary standards of gender norms from other men. And the OP absolutely shames Russ for failing to adhere to LStah's archaic, arbitrary standards of masculinity.

The cardigan with no shirt is a risk, but if you're an athlete it's a risk you can take. Kilt and brogue boots is a classic. If it weren't white he'd look like he was going for a rove in the highlands.
