"Osaka might be done with tennis"

Maybe its frustration after a loss and she bounces back but she basically said she doesn’t know when or if she will play again.

She takes these losses hard and said when she wins she doesn’t feel joy, just relief. When she loses.. she feels really sad and said that isn’t normal. Sucks because its okay to feel sad after a loss. That is normal but I guess the level of sadness is too heavy at this moment.

Damn shame because I think the nest is still ahead of her but if she isn’t enjoying this maybe its time to go to college or find what makes her happy.

was disturbing. She intentionally turned her back on her opponent and stalled
because she was losing. The fans booed the shit out of her, and rightfully so.
Her opponent is a woman of color as well and she didn’t deserve that.

Tennis is not her issue. Herself is her issue and she needs to work on that.
So it’s good that she is going to step away from the game to focus
on her mental health.

However, after yesterday, I personally think she is a poor loser, and doesn’t
know how to accept it. We always see this behavior when she loses.

Serena got reprimanded for her court behavior at times, as well
as McEnroe. McEnroe wasn’t always loved because through tantrums
all these time....Naomi deserves that same criticism.

with anything?

Did she not shake hands at the end?

I dont care if she is a sore loser. Plenty of great athletes are sore losers. Tom Brady rarely shakes hands after a loss, especially in the playoffs.

She has some serious issues with coping once she loses. Like her world ends every time she loses and that is something she has to correct or its a wrap.

She stood there, and then turned around to face the wall of the stadium.
It was equivalent to the other BB team holding the ball when it’s your possession..
It was deliberate as hell, and she just kept at it while she was getting boo’d.

I can’t remember the last time I saw something like that in tennis. I’ve seen people
take a minute to resume the game after a break, and then get a warning from the
chair for delaying the match. But she just stopped during the match and faced the
wall.

Just because a person is experiencing mental health issues doesn’t mean they
get to act out.

I just believe when it comes to one’s own culture you should be even more
reverent. I just have a tribal perspective that’s all.

I saw it as she was getting her ass handed to her and just refused to
accept it.

And is experiencing struggles in front of millions of people. Listen everyone has a story and everyone has struggles but that is not an excuse for anyone to be an asshole, whether its Osaka, Serena, Shapo or Djokovic. What she was doing that game was petty. It sucks to see her struggle and get emotional but she always get emotional even when she wins. Fernandez (Osaka’s opponent) said alllllll the right fucking things and seems a lot more mature emotionally than Osaka and Shapo.

and I have respect for those situations. However, if you can’t uphold
the policies and rules of the game because you’re not in good mental
health, then you shouldn’t be participating.

She knew what she was doing, and she even admitted in her post match
conference that her actions were childish. She, basically, was upset with
the fact that she was losing.

I’m just saying that Fernandez, an unseeded 18 year old, didn’t deserve
that type of sportsmanship from Osaka, or lack of sportsmanship, just like
Osaka didn’t deserve the bad sportsmanship that Serena elicited when
Osaka beat Serena a few years ago at the US Open.....

she came back and didn’t handle losing well so she is probably going to step away again.

The fawwk are you talking about?

She is admitting that no one else deserves to see her act put this way which is why she is going to take a break or maybe even step away for good.

Yall sound dumb as fuck acting like you respect mental health and then immediately disrespecting mental health for bashing her behavior.

Her behavior is part of the reason she admits she needs to step away.

She said the way she feels isn’t normal. You need to respect her for admitting her shortcomings instead of bitching about it.

the fact that you have a litmus test for empathy for a young person says more about you than it does about her.

And there is a difference between "slamming my racket and purposefully turning my back to delay the opponents serve" and sitting out because she's not happy with where she is in life or how she feels. My point was this particular match was terrible behavior. You're acting like she is an 8 year old child. Miss me with that.

psychotic, due to being abused and battered, and who has
become violent because of those conditions, gets less sympathy
or empathy. Those individuals are instantly ostracized without any
regard to the environment they were raised in.

However, here we have an athlete who throws a tantrum and disregards
the game because she can't accept losing, and people shower her
with sympathy and empathy, while insulting the people who critique her
actions.

It's clear that Naomi is spent. Maybe taking six months or a year and focus on her mental health and get treatment is the best thing for her long-term.

She isn't the first young adult to have a quarter-life crisis. She is self-aware and has the resources to get the best care and come back to tennis if she's up to that.

I'm rooting for her to come back. If she does leave tennis, she'll still find a way to make an impact on society.

At the slams it's just you, facing your opponent under the glare of thousands, your coach can't help you and there are what feels like eons between points, games and sets.

I'm not sure she was ever ready to be catapulted into the limelight so quickly. A break would probably do her a world of good.

coach from the box. That’s the dumbest shit ever. They can’t interact
at all once a match starts.

I would say gymnastics is the only sport that might be tougher in that regard,
because of how difficult it is, and how young the athletes are.

or 2 minute if its a floor routine and they get to immediately talk to coaches after each routine.

Tennis is grueling as fuck.

Matches can last hours.

I had a classmate who tried to play in a tournament at a club and dude said he was launching balls out of the stands in frustration. It was his first and only match.. lol.

You take a bathroom break and the whole fucking arena boos the shit out of you.

she says a lot of revealing stuff in there because they really look deep at some of her losses. it's clear she's dealing with a lot that is totally new to her AND that she doesn't have the tools to deal with yet.

might actually be good for her to take time off. definitely for her mental healthy, but for her game too.

i wish the best for her, whatever she does.

We like to act like we would be able to withstand the pressure of professional sports because we player in HS and dreamed of making it to the pros

People truly have no idea how much pressure these athletes are under and how many people depend on them to keep the lights on.

35. "No one is being cruel."
In response to Reply # 25

Do you even understand what cruel means?

If you’re on the court and you’re having issues when you start
losing, because that’s when her demeanor changes, the umpire
is right there. She doesn’t showcase those sentiments when she is
winning.

When she won her previous rounds, we didn’t see that behavior
on the court. She simply has a problem with losing, and it’s clear as
day. So just because you’re losing doesn’t mean you get to act however
you want.

She could have simply went to the umpire and asked for a moment
of stoppage to get herself together or whatever. You just don’t stop
playing, and turn your back to everyone because your game is not going
going well.

It’s not just a tennis match, because it is tennis where she makes her millions
of dollars. They are not out there playing an exhibition, and her opponent didn’t
deserve that, because her opponent played against her with respect and good sportsmanship.

Again, if she were having issues, she could have easily walked over to the
umpire and asked for a break or a moment to gather herself. She was in control
and she knew what she was doing, she just chose to act childish. She isn’t insane,
demented or psychotic. She was in control and she continued to play the match.

Her issue is not knowing how to handle losing, but that’s not her opponent’s problem.
If she can’t cope, stop playing the game and work on your mind state.

You can’t have it both ways.

She has lost with grace before

She is now playing with a lot more pressure and admits she isn’t handling it well enough to continue.

Why cant you simply accept that and hush instead of tripling down on the obvious.

You keep responding like she should be able to turn her mental health issues off like a light switch. The fact she can’t handle losing “normally” is her issue right now.

She was intentionally stalling to stop the momentum of her opponent.
She knew what she was doing

During this open, the entire press was kind to her and there were no
issues when she was winning.

She was up a set and everything was all sunshine. There was
ZERO pressure, and as soon as her opponent made an adjustment
and started beating her, she turned into a sore loser and started
stalling and throwing tantrums.

Period.

She expected to breeze through Fernandez, and she couldn’t
make the adjustments when Fernandez figured her out. She simply
started delaying the match on PURPOSE.

There is nothing insensitive about that critique. It is a critique of her
sports game, not of her personal life.

The POINT is you voice support for someone's mental illness, but
when it comes to serious, psychotic issues of mental illness, where
someone is violent or has committed a crime, you have less empathy
or sympathy for it...Those people get ostracized.

It's not as cute or convenient for you....
