"No posts about the Texas abortion law?"

Normally I'm against the 'No posts about..." type of posts, but I surprised no one else made a post about this, especially since the Supreme Court up and ruled to deny delaying it. Have to feel sorry for the women and girls out there that don't have the means to have to literally cross state borders to get an abortion.

Since the law gives private citizens the right to snitch one other private citizens that are just tangentially suspected of doing anything with performing an abortion, what's to stop petty folks from just tying up the courts with bogus abortion claims?

I have to imagine other states will follow suit to pass similar laws given how the Supreme Court majority pretty much gave the Texas law it's blessing.

Most people are either trying to keep their head above water or partying this thing out til the wheels fall off. Folk just want to be entertained bc reality looks shitty af and no end in sight.

Everyone is distracted, medicating and trying to find some corner of happiness while ignoring the house on fire until the fire singes their hair.

That being said, I'm still in shock at what's happened in Texas. Private citizens enforcing the law is nuts. What next?

I didn't know this was digital as well. I had assumed folks would have to get a lawyer and present the suit formally and in person in court. I wonder what the logistics for this webpage are in terms of actually penalizing folks.

That webpages seems so perverse given the stakes involved. I hope you are trolling me.

https://www.salon.com/2021/09/01/shrek-texas-abortion-snitch-line-memes-activism/

"Almost immediately, ProLifeWhistleBlower.com was inundated with nearly countless false reports, hate mail, and — because Gen-Z is wonderful — "Shrek" memes.

Lots and lots of "Shrek" memes, some safe for work and others not so much.

One TikToker shared a video of their "report" to the tip line, in which they uploaded 11 "Shrek" images with a message that explains, "My wife aborted our baby 4 weeks into her pregnancy without my consulting me."

As a result of this scheming, and tasteful "Shrek" memes and furry porn, the Texas site has gone from dystopic, crowd-sourced, right-wing doxing machine, to a useless social media spectacle. Its demise feels like a callback to the epic trolling spearheaded by TikTok teens and K-Pop fans that contributed to an empty Trump rally stadium in Tulsa last summer, after users reserved thousands of tickets to the event, only to not show and humiliate the former president's bamboozled campaign team with rows upon rows of empty seats."

This type of shit so self-sabotaging I could scream.

GOP: does awful shit in power. Dems: Campaign on that awful shit, and regain power. Do nothing to check GOP power. GOP: Does more awful shit. Dems: Think of the votes we can win!

At some point, Dems are going to have to do some shit with the power they are given.

They have a majority right fucking now. And even some GOP who claim to be pro precedent/pro choice.

So make the right to an abortion the law of the land right fucking now.

Pass laws.

Don't play games with this. Don't send me emails asking for 15 bucks.

Don't gamble that this will pay off in the midterms.

Do something fucking now.

Pass voting rights. Pass abortion. Reform the court. Fucking Act.

Don't use this as a way to raise money promising to fight in 23. They have the power now.

They aren’t maneuvering correctly. Make abortion a federal law with the
same timeframes...period...no state interpretations of the law.

Seat belt law is a federal law. There are no other interpretations regarding it...
Abortion can be the same thing.

i think that's the real issue.

on paper, yes, but what are these "moderate" dems really up for? seems like they are their for the status quo and to collect their lobbyist checks.

in which case, it's not REALLY a majority.

but there's folks like Sinema and Manchin who don't even feel like Dems, and who have a lot of Republican support.

it's like Dems are being snaked from within, and in a way they kind of are.

so when everyone cries "you have the numbers" it's like, "do they?"

not really.

I think Sinema and Manchin would pass some sort of pro-choice federal law but that would require the Dems to get to 60 senators or the 50 current Dems to vote to get rid of the filibuster. Sinema and Manchin have stated they won’t get rid of the filibuster, I also doubt they are the only Dems that would vote that way.

If the Dems are serious about getting rid of the filibuster they need to hold the House and add at least two more Dem senators who are in favor of getting rid of the filibuster in the 22 midterms.

Everyone: Dems need to do X
You: Dems don't have the votes within their own party

...... meaning dems aren't doing what dems need to do. Six of one, half dozen of the other.

The dems who *are* (at least presumably) in support of these things, aren't even putting the necessary *pressure* on those within their own party to do the things that will be necessary to avoid the looming catastrophes. The White House should be screaming about these things at every single opportunity. Where the hell has Kamala been ? Not only in regard to like voting rights and abortion but, in fucking general ?

And all these crises are such that if action isn't taken, if pressure isn't mounted on the dems to whom you refer (Manchin, Sinema) then they will never again have another opportunity to do anything. Those are the stakes. We are on the fast track to Gilead and the entire party apparatus is fighting about infrastructure and saying barely a word about voting rights, climate, or repro rights.

It's negligent and will cost us probably everything.

This idea that Dems don’t have a true majority is
still a critique of the party.

Dems have had nearly 10 months to get the
moderates on board. How is it not done?

Does anyone think that the GOP would be stopped
with a slim majority????

Second, who says they don’t have the majority
on this specific issue???

Are at risk GOP going to vote down choice?

Even if it doesn’t work, wouldn’t it be better to
go down fighting???

People are so knee jerk on this shit.

“This isn’t Dems fault!!!!”

No one said it is.

But are they going to do what they can, fight, etc

OR.....

Fundraise?

So far, it’s fundraise.

Essentially, they raised funds last year so they
could do the impossible like flip GA so they
could......

Continue to fundraise.

It’s ok to want more.

Yep yep yep. We're all saying the same thing. And making excuses for those who agree with us/the majority of the country but have done next to nothing to convince the "moderates" of what needs to be done to save the country.

I did ... lol. Those of us with functioning brains have known about the repug project of trying to repeal Roe for 40+ years. They've literally told us that's what they were doing since the day Roe went into effect. Dems sat back with their arms crossed assuming precedent would save us, with just a select few screaming about how action needed to constantly be taken to protect that right (among many others).

And here we are.

bans all abortions. A federal judge issued an injunction on the ruling, so more than
likely the issue will head to the Supreme Court for a final ruling, which was
Alabama’s plan all along. People have totally forgotten about that situation.

Texas’ bill on abortion is a mathematical way of banning all abortions. No abortions
can be administered after six weeks of pregnancy, but it’s common for some women
to not realize they are pregnant until after that time period.

They tiptoed around the constitution by simply changing the timeframe of
when a women can have an abortion. .....which basically means never.

It’s going to get very ugly....tremendously ugly.

I can’t front. That was a sinister chess move by the Texas government.

I ask with sincerity. Because this and most actions seem deliberate, vile, and intentional. But not dumb.
And I think it does a disservice to denote the threats we’ve been facing from the far right as dumb and/or poor (which often comes along with people calling them dumb)

Leftist, liberals, progressives, etc love to paint the redneck idiot picture of these politicians, but these right wing politicians are obviously smarter at the game then the DEMS.

Who is dumb if we can't beat them at their own game? I find liberal elites to be out of touch and they assume everyone shares their values.

Not every American wants to be a dog walking, single person living in a tiny apartment in a big city. In fact, most Americans are family oriented and align with conservative values.

After living in a big progressive city, I notice that there are some policies that make social issues even worse for low income people. DC is supposedly so intellectually advanced but pushed every working class person out and now the city is full of rich caucasians who want nothing to do with black people. How is this an advanced society compared to racist southerners who at least are honest about how they feel?

I'm sure there's someone out there without these sorts of clauses, but still, you wonder how far down the webhosting line they'll have to go to find the right ToS. I hadn't even considered this might be a thing.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/09/03/technology/texas-abortion-law-website-tiktok.html?smid=url-share

Others on Twitter called for a boycott of GoDaddy, the company that hosts the Texas Right to Life tip site. They claimed the site violated GoDaddy’s rules that prohibit customers from collecting or harvesting nonpublic information about anyone without their “prior written consent.”

GoDaddy said late Thursday that it had given Texas Right to Life 24 hours to find a new hosting provider before cutting off service.

“We have informed prolifewhistleblower.com they have 24 hours to move to another provider for violating our terms of service,” Dan C. Race, a GoDaddy spokesman, said in an email.

i saw a twitter thread about people needing to connect more to their local politics and attend city council meetings, school board meetings etc...pay attention to what's going on, who's in power and what decisions they are making...maybe seek public office of any kind in order to hold space /run against the Fascist Right taking power all over the country...perhaps you might consider that.

i mean yeah, there's so many ways to fight but ultimately personnel is policy. period, end of story

"Abortion and Aftercare"

The thing is people don't give a damn about parents struggling to find child care but care so much about abortion.

I just find this whole political landscape to be a mindfuck. I don't know how abortion is such a big deal but actually taking care of kids that are here seems to be like, "eh your problem now you dumb ass parent."

Parenting is really a major life change. Worse when the conditions are difficult and our society does not support the 18 year journey to care for one human being.

I just think it is hard for me to get worked up about abortion. I tried to have an abortion in a state with LOTS of resources and it was still hard. My doc had to be present to take the pill, then I had to go back in for a surgical procedure to make sure the abortion worked. The whole thing was just as stressful as having a baby.

Women are fucked. Men don't give a damn, the state leaves you out to dry and kids suffer because everyone so "Not my problem".

All of this breeds apathy.

This is also a critique of Dems. Liberal judges know the stakes. They're too smart not to.

Yet they hang around due to some combination of outright ego and narcissism and have led us directly to a 7-2 Handmaid's Tale court.

This could've been prevented. So fucking easily. And everyone knew the stakes then (including RBG) and know them now (Breyer, the White House, Congress, et al).

They were in the minority in the senate.

One of the reasons the GQP were able to get 3 SCOTUS picks through was due to Harry Reid getting rid of the judicial filibuster. How did that work out for the Dems in regard to the Supreme Court? You think doing away with the legislative filibuster won’t similarly back fire?

It isn’t like the GQP outmaneuvered the Dems to get those 3 picks through. The Dems couldn’t do anything to block it as they were in the minority. If Reid hadn’t got rid of the filibuster in 2014 then perhaps the Dems could have blocked those 3 picks.

.. if Reid hadn't gotten rid of the judicial filibuster then half the country's circuit court judges wouldn't have been confirmed either, leaving room for repugs to shape basically the entire country's courts. Remember, Reid nuked the judicial filibuster because repugs swore to reject all Obama's nominees for his entire second term and had already begun doing so. That's untenable.

Obviously in some ways repugs ended up being able to fill a ton of circuit judge seats anyway once Orange Hitler took office, but it could've been much worse had Obama not been able to fill a single seat for 3+ years or whatever it was.

I mean we're dealing with a totally extremist, undemocratic opposition party so it's hard to figure out what the best options are as they continuously ignore and destroy democratic decorum and norms. Everyday it gets worse. My point is just that we shouldn't be blaming Reid for doing what seemed right in that moment. We should be placing 100% of the blame and focusing our perspective on the party whose entire platform is centered around collapsing democracy and maintaining minority power. How dems respond to all of this political criminality is secondary.

We can second guess dems all we want after the fact but the repugs leave dems with few reasonable choices, and should shoulder 99% of the blame at all times. And I'd rather dems try something in an effort to accomplish something in the moment, than just throw up their hands and pretend things are normal and let repugs rig the game like they're doing now. Because the result may be the same either way. i.e. if dems do nothing, democracy is gone. If they act with the desperation required, at least there's a chance it can be saved.

And it blew up in their faces and now people in here are blaming the Dems for not getting Garland through, which they couldn’t because they didn’t have the numbers They also couldn’t not block the Trump circuit and SCOTUS picks when they couldn’t because of what they previously did in getting rid of the filibuster. If Reid doesn’t get rid of the filibusters then Dems could have also blocked all of trumps judicial nominees as well and forced the GOP to get rid of the judicial filibuster.

So once again, if Dems do something in the short term to pass legislation, like get rid of the filibuster, this will just allow the GQP to reverse everything they have accomplished once they are in the majority again.

... and Breyer (in 2014 and now, respectively) for not retiring when dems had/have full gov't control. I can't find anyone blaming dems for not "pushing Garland through," because as you note, that wouldn't have been possible in 2015 & 2016. The argument is that RBG and Breyer, - who, whether they like to acknowledge it or not, are part of the national democratic power structure and therefore are ultimately responsible for decisions they make that give or take away democratic power - should have strategically retired/retire so that their seats could have/can be filled with younger liberals to maintain a longer term, more reasonable balance on the SC.

So once again, if dems instead do nothing, they have zero chance of ever having control of gov't ever again. At least if they band together and pass legislation to support voting rights, they may have a chance to actually *stay* in power and therefore repugs won't have the opportunity to reverse everything dems accomplished.

Especially if the SC is stacked.

That the Dems did nothing when the GQP blocked Obama’s pick, I am assuming he means Garland and then the Dems did nothing to block Trumps 3 SCOTUS nominations.

Because “the Dems gonna Dem”.

You replied to his post.

As far as RBG and Breyer, I agree that it was short sighted of RBG to not retire in 14 in retrospect. It looked like she was going to make it but she didn’t. I agree that would be great if Breyer would retire and I think he should. The GQP has set precedent to replace a SCOTUS Justice during a lame duck Congress so should the Dems lose control of Congress in 22 then he should immediately retire and we should push a replacement through. Perhaps this Breyers plan and strategy.

I interpreted "dems gonna dem" as a more general sentiment about their approach as opposed to it being a direct response/connection to his comments about RBG. In other words I think he was lumping RBG in with dems, hence my response that they are part of the greater national democratic power structure and therefore need to work strategically within that to accomplish any of dems' collective goals.

But I may be wrong - that's just the way I saw it.

No doubt. We can only hope. Everything he says publicly seems to run counter to that tho haha. Fingers crossed.

When i said "dems gonna dem" i meant looking at the long term and dirty strategy of Republicans, as a democratic supreme court justice or as a democratic politician. She should have retired when Dems still had the majority. The old liberal justices now need to retire with Biden and the majority. Same thing that happened with RBG is going to happen with Breyer.

I was saying Republicans play dirty and get what they want. Blocking an Obama judge, immediately followed by a one term President putting in three judges. One with lesser time left in office, than the excuse used for Garland. My point was liberal or "democratic" judges looking at the tactics of Republicans and doing what is necessary to prevent it. Had RBG retired when Dems had the majority in 2014, we'd have one less ultra conservative.

I'm starting to think long-term that this could be a galvanizing move for the Democratic Party. If this can be spun as a single-issue vote for enough independents, then we could see a blue wave despite the forecast favoring republicans(apparently). I'm hopeful.
