It's was so crazy to me seeing the make-up of this team (two black women, a hmong woman, and a white woman) as compared to the Magnificent 7. Simone obviously is incredible, but I was also pulling hard for Suni Lee. Hometown kid from an almost never represented community that I grew up around. I hope she's able to get a gold on bars in the individual finals.

I'm speaking specifically about the interview they did about her abuse. It aired on the first night and was horribly uncomfortable.
It was way too soon to be spotlighting that situation, and felt clear to me something she was forced into rather than having come to peace and wanted to make public.
The whole setup for the team this year was awkward as fuck, and clearly the studio narrative they wanted with little regard for the players themselves. Considering they were complicit in creating the culture in which the abuse happened to begin with, they were attempting to use her and the team's story to redeem themselves and it disgusted me.
I believe it is this mental pressure that broke Simone and I am glad she was able to pull herself out of it. I hope she continues to heal and finds her own peace.

Before watching it last night, I was on the side of "she needed to suck it up and compete". A big aspect of sports is facing adversity and overcoming the pressure of big moments.
But after watching, I realized just how dangerous gymnastics can be if you have the yips. A baseball pitcher off his game gives up a couple of homeruns. A gymnast falls on her head.
The one and only vault she did looked sketchy as hell. And she looked freaked out afterwards like something terrible almost happened.
For whatever reason, she was off her game this week. It could have been due to the pressure of being the face of the games. The expectation of perfection. Lack of support group in Tokyo. There are a bunch of things that could cause anyone to be off in this moment.
Whatever the reason, if you know you don't have it in this sport there is more at stake than just losing the competition.

according to who? and the types of adversity and pressure matter...those aren't always the same things for everyone. think about how toxic that default narrative is and who fed us that and who benefits from that...

Who the fuck are we to tell someone when to “suck it up” for our entertainment.
I agree with you on the injury point and its something I have been screaming at anyone who complains. She is 24. That is like 50 in gymnastic years. She could paralyze herself if she made a mistake.
I’m glad she protected herself.

That’s a baaaad combo to be doing the type of shit she does. Even a slightly off landing could be a double leg break like that girl in the NCAAs a few years ago. Especially since she’s already doing more difficulty tricks than anyone else.

I feel like gymnastics, Nascar, XGames are they type of sports where it could be the difference between life and death or serious injury.
Het the yips in baseball or golf and you strike out or miss a put.
Get the yips in Nascar and you might not make it out if turn 3 alive.
