is putting Snoop in your top 5 MC list..

If you have this symptom, you are infected with the Delta variant.

In order to cure yourself, log off all social media accounts for 1 month, or
until you no longer have Snoop in your top 5 list. It is important that you quarantine
yourself to prevent other top 5 MC lists from becoming tainted.

May the Skylord be with you, and drink plenty of water.

if you’re basing it on number of hits and longevity, he’s definitely top 5. Snoop has fans that are kids and fans that are grandparents.

I think the quality of his albums is highly underrated too.

How are we measuring top 5 though? Some people look at history, impact, hits, etc. Some people look at it more technically like who are the 5 best in terms of lyrics, flow, delivery, etc.. And some people just look at who they like listening to the best.

both Q-Tip and Snoop have one of the most diverse resumes in hip hop with regards to all the collabs that they have done with different artists…

But Q-Tip has more range and longevity…

I also enjoyed "Neva Left" a lot more than I thought I would.

However, that period in-between saw Snoop released a lot of over-stuffed albums with A LOT of filler. Some great singles. A few great album tracks. But very few albums that even reached "very good" status between Doggy Style and BUSH. And that does not a top five career make.

The following post-Doggystyle albums are *at least* "very good":

- Top Dogg
- Last Meal
- Blue Carpet Treatment
- R&G
- Doggumentary
- 7 Days of Funk

And I prolly could've listed Paid da Cost as well. As well as the first Eastsidaz album and the 213 joint, if you're willing to give him credit for masterminding those collaborative joints (which he did).

But even without those, that's 6 or 7 "very good" albums out of the 11 total albums that he released in the Doggystyle - BUSH time period you referenced. Which isn't "very few" (although I imagine you'll have gripes with some of what I listed haha, I'm just interested to see which ones.)

I love Snoop, but saying he is top 5 or has way better songs than Nas is supreme over the top. Dude has been making lazy music for like 15+ years now.

And I would say, yes, Snoop does have more good songs than Nas, and I love Nas. Snoop puts out way more music and there are at least 2 or 3 bangers on every album.

I was very impressed when I saw him live like 10 years ago. He sounded great and naturally dope. and he’s a rapper’s rapper when he wants to be. Most rappers don’t have anywhere near his range and yeah, he’s got a mountain of jamming songs.

Music discussion like this is a struggle. Some artists try like hell to make excellent albums. Others try to make sure they have good songs and the albums can vary. Is one better than the other? And even if it is, is an act with 3 grand albums and then nothing else better than an act with 1 unanimous classic but 100 other good songs across 20 albums? Of course, it depends. What are the expectations? I struggle with all of that and I just end up trying to enjoy whatever I think the artist is trying to do. D’Angelo is trying to make supreme albums. Snoop is trying to keep on jamming and being a part of jams. They’ve both succeeded in my opinion.

Regardless, Snoop is excellent and has been off and on for 30 years. That’s gotta count for something. And don’t start me on how jamming the 213 album and R&G are TILL THIS DAY.

does that make sense?

Hes top 5 but exists in this weird area where he's cemented in a position position that neither goes up nor down, he's just outside of the conversation but also historically inaccurate. almost like if he were number 5, other people could also be number 5, but his position will remain unchanged.

Doggystyle is perhaps my fav album of all time, he is INCREDIBLE live, and the way he’s been able to reinvent himself and change with the times is very dope.

Honestly - all the Neptunes hits, Sensual Seduction, Gangsta Luv, Young Wild and Free, etc - he’s been much more than his early success indicates. At one point it seemed like he was more famous for being Snoop than anything but that is really minimizing his output.

All THAT said - he’s perhaps the most charismatic human ever.

Bush was a criminally overlooked classic album
7 Days of Funk is an even more slept on cult classic

he needs to do a full Funk album with a band next project. Get Dam-Funk, Pharrell and George/Bootsy/PFunk. That would be ill.

BIG's 2 albums, along with Junior MAFIA and all his guest features over that 4 year period of time or so can go head to head, song for song against the best songs of Snoops 30 year career. Meanwhile we've seen Snoop release a ton of uninspired, lazy stuff in addition to the best joints in his catalog.

Doggystyle + his work on The Chronic, and Murder Was the Case. Obviously Doggfather was a step down but it was decent.

Most rappers batting averages go down significantly if they keep releasing albums for decades: KRS, LL, those last two Rakim albums, Cube, PE, etc.

Only 80s/90s rapper who really maintained that batting average for his whole career that I can think of is Scarface.

Frankly, I don’t even consider LL, Rakim, KRS’s late career stuff when considering their GOAT status. To me once you reach a certain point in your career, everything that comes after is treated like bonus points that can only help your grade but not hurt it.

I think Snoop was more hit than miss up til like 2006ish, after which I think he started coasting. But I think you're right that he was at his absolute strongest in the years just before he signed to No Limit, which would've been about 97/98 as you partly noted. Can't forget to include Smokefest '96 which was released during that brief free agency period after he left Death Row but before he signed with NL. That album was 100% heaters. I have my copy somewhere.

But anyway, after the clunker that was Da Game is to be Sold ... or whatever the fuck that mess was called, he dropped Top Dogg, Paid Da Cost, R&G, then Blue Carpet, all of which were good-to-great albums.

Ego Trippin' had it's moments but that's the album when I feel like he started coasting a bit, taking some risks only he and a few others could take based on status, and dropping albums that had a small handful of bangers but were mostly filler. And as you noted, I think he had and continues to have every right to do that considering what he gave us prior to that, and that he now only gets credit, doesn't get dinged.
i.e. the aforementioned Ego Trippin' had "Press Play" and "Those Gurlz" and a couple others, which are absolute all time Snoop songs, surrounded by mostly forgettable songs that do nothing to hurt his reputation. But those songs absolutely get added to his collection of career bangers.

By that logic, Nas might not be even a top 15 rapper…

IMO putting Biggie in a higher ranking over people like KRS, G Rap, Kane, Ice Cube etc. is laughable…

While it is true and a fair point that he hasn't put out a great album in 15 years, he consistently puts good music out into the world. there is something to be said for that, the number of good songs he has beats most rappers. he's still doing it, he did a song with a mariachi band and even that was good. this is just a random list of songs but i could go on.

I always call it a Pharrell outtakes album, but Snoop went all in on that thing and had fun with it. California Roll is amazing and should have been treated as such. Stevie leaned into those vocals. That and Awake alone are worth the time listening to the whole thing.

I am borderline upset that Awake didn't become one of those 'hear it everywhere you go where stuff like that gets played' type of songs.
