I turned 40 and my whole body fell apart. Been working out in the park during the pandemic (jogging, stair sprints, jump rope, HIIT workouts, pull ups, kettlebell, etc) and the kettlebell did something bad to me TWICE

My ankle that I had an avulsion fracture in I guess never got full mobility and is always tight. One day it felt funny jumproping and I couldn't walk on it for weeks. Think Jeff Green wearing a boot for plantar's fasciitis level bad. After I went to PT and that got better my dumb ass hit the kettlebell again and fucked my back up terribly, then the pain ended up radiating down to my leg to where I couldn't walk again.

Months later I'm finally able to do workouts again.

in the left foot. had no idea what it was and let it linger. shit was terrible. that cortisone shot took care of it.

the next year, had it in the right foot. immediately knew what it was, so right to the doc for shot.

no issues since. I think my form was causing mine occur.

I've kinda always been conservative with kettle bells. I'd use them in occasionally, but preferred dumbbells.

If it comes back I'll look into that. What type of doctor / care provider did you see? I'm stuck between "it's not broken and you don't need surgery" doctors and "come here twice a week to do these exercises" physical therapists. I feel like there's a knowledge gap with soft-tissue conditions

when I first got it, I tried PT and other options to work it out over time. the pain didn't get better, so I decided to try the shot.

it was better within a couple of days. this was after I'd been dealing with it from 6-9 months.

my regular doc recommended I see a specialist for it, so I I went to a podiatrist. he explained what was going on and potential fixes.

I think the Rock Bros brand on Amazon sells a suitable frame bag. I have one on two of my bikes and I’ve never had an issue with bumping. I’d def recommend a frame bag over the handlebar types. Also have a bag that fits under my seats, but that’s only big enough for a wallet and keys at most… I keep spare tubes and a gas inflator canister in mine.

Like my legs just aren't what they were 10 years ago. Tho my upper body is stronger than ever. But my knees now won't let me be great. So while I still work legs pretty intensely, certain things like squats/hack squats I now avoid. Bikes I now avoid. Steps I avoid. Anything that bothers my knees I'm like F it.

7-8 years back I had a stretch of about 6 months where I did it every day and felt incredibly good.

It’s just so boring to me doing DVD workouts. Gotta get over it and just do it though.

I have to give myself 2 days between squat days to really get anything out of it
So now I’m hitting
Monday Bench
Tuesday Squat
Wednesday rest
Thursday Bench
Friday Squat

Relevant accessories included on those workout days. I can’t believe I did heavy squats everyday for a month in 2019. Squatober was wild

I noticed everything is feeling tight. Shoulders, back, hips, ankles. No injuries yet, but I feel like it's a ticking time bomb.

I'm going to make stretching a main focus of my workouts going forward. Like days dedicated to just stretching.

I need focus more on it as well. although I tend to have tight muscles, I've never had a muscle injury. even when I was really active and sprinting every other day.

my injuries have been soft tissue related, which needed surgeries. PT folks have told me recently that getting more flexible and stronger in the glutes and hips will help the knee. working on it.

Get a decent regiment together. Do something like 30 minutes of stretches a few times a week at least. Foam rollers too. Whatever works for you. It will save you the grief of unnecessary injuries.

You can learn a lot from a dummy. Hopefully, that dummy is me! I walked around tight all the time, but I worked out 5-7 days a week so I looked pretty damn good. Still, that lack of stretching robbed me of some gains in the short term then eventually led me to a really bad groin strain where the resolution from a doctor was 'do almost nothing, do these stretches and wait for it to get better. It may take up to a year for it to be better. If you don't wait, it may stay with your for YEARS'. I didn't wait. It stayed with me FOR YEARS. Even now, I'm nowhere near where I was. And it sucks. Badly.

Take 1 day maybe every two weeks to do yoga or something too while you're at it. Loosen stuff up so that you can build yourself up the right way and hopefully keep those injuries at bay. Rehab is some BULLSHIT! The best way to rehab is to do right by yourself with stretching/hydration/the shit folks are usually bad at and hope it is enough to where you never have to rehab.

If you want to perform static stretching immediately before your weightlifting sets, keep them short and moderate because a lot of long duration (30+ seconds, especially 60+) and intense (>50% of discomfort) static stretching harms athletic performance (force, strength, power, speed). Or do dynamic stretching in place of static stretching.

Long duration, intense static stretching is fine at any other time.

about 2 months ago, I fucked up my shoulder. There wasn't one specific thing I can remember happening, either. I'm sure it was shitty form/improper warmup...and just doing exercises that didn't work for me. I've been fucking around with bodybuilding since Freshman year of high school. I've been relatively injury free, but I've had some achy shoulder shit happen...this one knocked me down, though. My wife and I were leaving that night for Destin, Fl. I was getting in one last workout then I had built Destin in as a week off. Just eat, drink, chill. During that day, I started to feel a little pain...it would originate in my shoulder and go down, through my bicep. Nothing crazy, just enough to notice. Shit didn't go away. By the time we got ready to hit the road. I was popping Ibuprofen. By the time we hit Destin. I felt decent. A little inflammation, I thought. Cool. We stopped at the front door to the condo to unload the luggage. I reached to pull a basic ass suitcase out of the trunk and LITERALLY crumpled to my knees. My wife has seen all my bodybuilding highs and lows, lol. She was like...oh, you're INJURED injured! The rest of that week was basically Biofreeze, pain meds and watching how I picked shit up. I came back home and after a week of babying it, wasn't any better. End up taking SIX WEEKS off, from the gym. All I did was walk. Didn't even get on the bike. During that time I immersed myself in every article I could find about the shoulder, how to strengthen it, how to gain mobility, etc. I completely eliminated some exercises from my life and added some others. I now do activation movements with bands before EVERY workout...even leg day, cuz shoulders play a big part in back squats. I realize you can't do shit without good shoulders and I never want to be in that place, again.

I'm assuming you're 30+ but the percentage of men at our age with shoulder problems, among those who are active / exercise, let alone dudes who bodybuild, is astronomical.

The fact that this is your first layoff is remarkable, or you have impeccable form or tendons of steel.

Honestly, six weeks is nothing. You'll be surprised how much strength you will retain and how quick you'll jump back in. For injuries in grappling I've had to take 8 - 12 weeks. Shit sucks but it makes you reevaluate your routine to make it more age-appropriate and take the necessary precautions to save yourself from injury.

I used to throw goon-lite weight around, just hop in and do reps of 275 with no warmup and think nothing of it. Over and over my shoulders would crap out, sometimes keeping me off anything chest or shoulder related for 2 - 3 weeks. After like 6 times of this happening and then starting up a jiujitsu hobby where shoulder tightness could actually LEAD to injury, I just do body weight now.

man, I felt you so much when you said above that you turned 40 and your body fell apart. I think one thing that has spared my joints is the bodybuilding aspect. My close homie, Chris has always been into the iron. We both love it. Difference is, he leaned more toward powerlifting. He was damn good, too...set a couple of Missouri state records, at one point. He's always been stronger than me. So, I was focusing on muscle quality/detail/separation...he was movin weight. Over the years, he's had a couple of serious injuries. I've mostly had just nagging shit. This shoulder thing knocked me off my feet, though. The full week in FL and 6 more weeks, once we got back. I didn't think it was ever going to stop fucking hurting, bro. Seeing you say 8-12 weeks makes me sick. You right about age-appropriate stuff, too. Stuff I did in my 20's, like behind the neck barbell presses, I won't even consider now.

I have a Topeak. Don't know the model, but here it is. I keep a multi-tool, couple tire tools, CO inflator and two cartridges and a couple dollar bills. I keep my spare tube in one of my jersey pockets.

for the most part it's been fine. but two things. my bike has a dropper post, so it gets kinda mushed when I let the let down. I'm also thinking about upgrading my tail light to a smart one that works like car lights and brightenings when stopping.

I don't carry much. the bike has tubeless tires, so never have to worry about flats.

fr, I might be doing too much lol.

Not because of injuries (fortunately), but to avoid them as I get older. Rubber tracks and dirt paths are my favorites to run on, but anything that gives when your foot presses into it will be better on your joints than hard surfaces. Grass is nice too, but it can be slippery if you ain't got the right shoes. Sand is a workout, and it's really dope to run barefoot right where the ocean waves stop. Just avoid the shells, lol.

For lifting, I only lift up to a bit more than my body weight now. It's more about getting my reps in than trying to push my max now.

#3: I got a little handlebar bag, and I'll take a backpack if I gotta carry more. I want to get a rear rack.

I sprained my shoulder last year trying to lift heavy weights. My shit was fucked up- I couldn’t even put on my seat belt or put a coat on without pain. While we were working from home I went to therapy and got my shit right. The injury scared me more than anything and made me realize I can’t do shit in my 40s I used to do in my 30s and 20s.

Water bottle holder and a under seat bag. Bag just holds my keys, bike tool and wallet. I have a cell phone holder on my handle bar

I've been dealing with some hip pain issues while squatting for the last year. Got an open trap bar a few months ago, and have increased deadlift volume along with different variations with the trap bar, and at this point have essentially used it to replace traditional low bar barbell squatting. It's not the same, but hits the same muscle groups in a similar way.
