If there's any silver lining, hopefully it increases the urgency and helps sway public opinion more in favor of getting an Infrastructure package done.

Americans and counting, all while decimating the economy.
And congress by and large has been ^shrugs^
Additionally we had an attempted coup in which those same members had their lives and country threatened and holding anyone accountable much less preventing the next attack has been ^shrugs^
Meanwhile that same public opinion court is controlled and propagandized by a corporate controlled media who will only allow the narrative of private back infrastructure to get through.

I am far below hopeful that infrastructure actually collapsing will move anyone's dials. Much less when the national advocates for that state is Desantis, Rubio, and a fucking crook.

Here we go, it's "paid for" by cutting UI, raising state & local taxes, selling spectrum and oil, mandatory cuts to other programs, then paying private equity firms to loan themselves money to buy public infrastructure so they can overcharge us for profit.

I think it was moreso the lax construction regulation and allowing developers to cut costs and maximize profits at the expense of public safety.

Florida is heavily influenced by the real estate developer lobby. There's been a ton of accelerated real estate deregulation in the state as the state becomes more dominated by their handpicked Republican legislators.

The governor just signed a law further limiting the fees assessed on builders and developers. And he raised property taxes on regular citizens to offset it.

There was a walking overpass collapse in Florida just a few years ago due to lax construction oversight.
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/22/us/bridge-collapse-florida-international-university-NTSB.html

I haven't seen a sinkhole mentioned in any of the coverage YET. I would assume that'd be something that was visibly apparent in the wreckage. But I'm obviously not an expert.

But all of that could be relate too, since regulations would govern how construction projects address rising sea level and what is permitted in terms of risk.

he used to go back n forth with the 9/11 truthers because he knew the kind of prep that went into controlled demo

i mean it definitely looks like those vegas casinos coming down, but it also looks like some buildings in mexico that collapsed a few years ago during the earthquake

this could have been a matter of just corner cutting construction, but we obviously know nothing at this point.

what a beyond horrible way to go out, and an even worse thing for anyone who's still trapped.

One building that fell or two?

It almost looks like one building and the middle fell, followed by the right side of the building and the left side stayed up? Or was it one building and half of it fell, followed by the other half?

We can replace passports, birth certificates and social security cards. Unless all photos , videos etc are in the cloud, those might be lost forever. But what is really so valuable other than human life?

I believe a few pets were rescued off balconies but not all (drones were sent inside to search for them). Personal belongings all lost. Every time someone went into the building they risked their life so it’s understandable.
