And can just pass a bunch of bullshit.

Because voters are too stupid and ignorant to reward the Dems for good policies and government. They fall for the GQP talking points all the time.

i understand how people feel about the filibuster and its use to obstruct a full dem agenda.

but eliminating the filibuster would allow the gop to govern as extreme as they do in the states.

so abortion is banned, nationwide universal gun possession and carry, nationwide right to work law (essentially a slow death for unions), universal voter suppression laws (prolly even a proof of citizenship requirement), ban on individual political contribution limits, police 'bill of rights' laws, crackdown on protest (legalization of killing/harming protestors), crackdown on trans people, nationwide ban on 'critical race theory' (aka teaching racism), eliminate administrative agencies' ability to regulate corporations without explicit congressional approval of *every* rule, etc.

all with a 6-3 far right supreme majority to cement the agenda in stone and continue to eviscerate the progressive/liberal laws and protections that the unified republican government couldnt wipe out itself.

1st term?

Sure we get a more progressive agenda passed for a few years. Then we get gridlock and then we get the trump/GQP in full power from 16-18 with the ability pass some truly wild things that would set us all back even further.

In this alternate reality where they nuked it during Obama...

Do we have additional states?

National voting rights?

Were the banks actually held accountable?

Did we get a public option?

Etc Etc

I'm legit shocked so many on Okayplayer are just trusting the idea of giving the keys (of both chambers) back to the GOP in 2 years on the pinky swear that they, themselves, will honor this ONE norm. They promise.

This is the one they won't set on fire.

Attack on the capital? Russian footsie? 60 votes for SC?

They'll do all of that, but not nuke the filibuster next time? Fuck.

The next chance they get, they absolutely will.

Look what norms they have allowed to melt away in the last year alone...forget the last 10.

They absolutely will nuke the filibuster the next chance they get.

There is literally nothing in recent history that would say otherwise.

...for statehood for DC and Puerto Rico, and expanding the Supreme Court.

You get everyone to agree on those, and it makes it harder for the Dems to lose the majority in the Senate and lessens the power of the Conservatives on the Supreme Court.

You eliminate the filibuster and start with those and the voting rights bill.

Problem is, Manchin and Sinema won't go for it, because with the potential edition of likely four Democratic Senators, they're not so important anymore.

(including supreme) 4. more stimulus (b/c, whatever)

in parallel, investigate and arrest all the traitors and conmen and crooks.

but yeah. can only happen w/ sinema and manchin.

compromise case is nuke filibuster and pass VRA, and then win next election, add to house and sen majorities, make those two assclowns irrelevant, and THEN do 3, 4, 5, 6, etc.

peace & blessings,

I get your default is to give Dems the benefit of the doubt, but...

This is some boogie man shit.

If the Dems even reform the filibuster, they are able to enact wide spread reform that will make it even harder for the GOP to win a senate majority for a long time.

Be it national voting rights, new states, etc.

Not to mention, the GOP will absolutely nuke it the next time they can.

Who watches the GOP refuse to validate an election last year and think "I'm sure they'll keep the filibuster...they seem nice"

The Dem party is being held hostage by two senators on this. I don't blame the entire party like some, but I am not going to try and rationalize the move here.

If the Dems don't pass election reform, this is it. We are talking about a party who can't even agree to investigate an assault on their own chamber.

But we trust them not to nuke the filibuster? JFC

Nah Trump etc changed the game. Dems need to go hard here, Reeq. Election reform. New states. Expand the court.

That hell that was the previous 4 years will seem like nothing if they don't.

It’s terrible and they’re STILL a racing each other to the bottom. It’s gotten worse every election cycle.

It’s scary to me that they’d probably even get more virulent if they lost an election and then came back, like shit you see in Arizona and with the national platforms.

At least anything that isn't overwhelmingly popular.

DC statehood? PR statehood? We don't have the votes. I don't mean we don't have 60 votes. We don't have 50 votes, or really anything close. For The People act? We don't have the votes. Major corporate tax hikes? We don't have the votes. Let's not be whining over things we need to pass if we couldn't pass those things anyway.

Manchin and Sinema have openly said they'd vote against anything significant. (And Kyrsten Sinema, let's not forget, started her career in the Green party.)

We barely got the covid relief bill passed, working around the filibuster, and it had like 70% support even from republicans.

The filibuster helps the minority party in the Senate. That's usually the Democrats, because of a rural state advantage encoded directly in the constitution. In one and a half years they'll be in the minority again. We really wanna shoot ourselves in the foot over bills that we don't have the votes to pass anyway?

Mitch McConnell was able to overthrow the federal judiciary for the next generation by coaxing *Democrats* to weaken the filibuster.

This shit isn't easy, no matter how much you want it to be easy. The only real fix for the country's political problems is to elect more Democrats. Until that happens all this blather over the filibuster is just something for cable newsers to kill time with so they don't have to spend the whole day talking about UFOs and the bullshit 'lab leak' hypothesis.

We have weak majorities in both houses. Which of course is better than being in the minority but it’s not at all ideal. Tillis should have lost, if not for cal Cunningham’s scummy ways. I was hoping Ernst and Collins woulda went down but trumps/GOP support in Iowa was underestimated and Collins is just an institution in Maine, voting to confirm kavenaugh didn’t change that.

In response to Reply # 21

I get that 51 isn't enough. I do.

(I think if Chuck wasn't fucking useless and if Biden was truly motivated, it would be enough for a few things...but I get it overall)

51 is too close. Not enough. Fair- it is too close.

But not so long ago 59-60 wasn't enough either.

What is the magic number of democrats that they actually deliver?

The GOP is ready to overthrow this entire shit, man.

No voting act?... its done. 22 and 24 are absolutely sealed. And beyond probably.

And the GOP will *absolutely* nuke the filibuster this next cycle they are in power. If they have to.

Stolen election. Socialism. Freedom. Liberty. Country back on track. Whatever it is they use....they will do what Democrats are too chicken shit to do because democrats are still convinced its the 90s.

If they have to.

This is the same old story. The GOP are ruthless in using their power when they have it....the Dems talk themselves out of it and use the GOP boogie man to justify it....

Imagine being a political party that can't even deliver on much of the country being disgusted with an attempted coupe....because you are afraid the party doing the coupe will be mean to you when they regain power.

Its okay to admit that Democrats are fucking terrible.

The system is fucked of course. And the deck is stacked against Dems. For sure.

But the Dems themselves are fucking awful at this. Anyone who has been awake for the last 15 years can see this all too well.
