"my dog is at his end"

13 year old rescue. Lab mixed with what seems Great Dane because thats how he is built. Had cancer for 4 years and a large ass growth on his leg after 4 years. Wife didnt want to amputate and used natural and holistic meds and he was called a miracle dog by some vets. But its the old age and the typical body shutting down and hips issues with big dogs thats at play. Going to do the euthanasia thing with them coming to the house. This of course is the part about pets we all hate. He had a good ass life and he made ours enriched. All pets do that for us right? Our other dog is taking it well and being very co enforcing to him lol its amazing to see.

It’s the reason I never wanted a dog. My wife insisted on getting one for our sons who were small, then. Eleven years later, he’s MY best bud. I’m terrified at the thought of him not being around, but I know it’s inevitable. Strength to you and your fam.

This is my story. I am only one year in and I am somehow his “alpha”. During the first week I was ready to drop him off at the shelter and now I cannot imagine this house without him.

My prayers are going to the OP.

our dog had to put down a nearly 2 years ago. he wasn't keeping for in at all. it got to where there was nothing we could do.

he went from being a healthy, ball of 'puppy' energy to a very thin shell of himself within a few months. he was only 10. we got him just before my son was born.

did something I never thought we'd do as a fam. we have his ashes. we weren't going to do that, but my daughter wanted it.

sorry you're having to go through this.

he got hit by a car, right in front of her. So tragic. She couldn’t make the decision, in the moment, but I had Petsmart do it and she has his ashes in a nice wooden box with his name engraved on it.

My advice that I give to everyone in this predicament...

Write down all of the things you remember about him. You and your wife have nicknames for him, or phrases you say to/about him, he has little quirks and unique ways of acting, etc. Write ALL that stuff down. It will be sad - you will cry. But you'll also be laughing through the tears, and when those memories fade, you'll be able to revisit.

Having a dog is the best. Losing one is horrible, but having had them is worth it.

just started crying thinking of doing that with our domincan rescue. we got him 2 years ago when he was "4-ish" and I cannot imagine losing him. My first dog. I want to write everything down. My phone is 99% photos of him or him with us. I can only imagine what having human kids is like but at least the presumption is they will outlive you. I hate that we don't have that with our pets. Its not fair.

Was really aggressive and she deteriorated quick. She had a check up a month earlier and was in good shape. She went from a happy, energetic older dog to one who stopped eating and had difficulty walking. She was diagnosed on a Wednesday and passed on Friday morning. We were planning to euthanize her on Saturday but she didn't make it that long. She passed while I was petting her and cleaning her up.

She had been my constant and consistent companion for 13 years. Losing her hurts but seeing her in pain was horrible.

Treasure the time you have left with him and be a comfort to him as he transitions.

All 4 of my dogs lived to their teens, but all died from cancer, had growths, etc. Its hard but take solace in the fact you gave him the best life he could have had.

this is like 4-5 for e as we had three cats before and two other dogs passed

>cancer, had growths, etc. Its hard but take solace in the fact
>you gave him the best life he could have had.

Yeah and we gave these animals a good life like others usually dont. It weird, a few of the pets had growths/cancers. So prevalent in the pet world. This raw diet though my wife has our other dog on and had my other who passed seems like the best thing. The typical dog food just causes so many problems in dogs.

the dog is 13-14, with growths all of his body, it's literally christmas whenever we get him groomed

"Hey! Feel this...this a new lump huh?"

his teeth are falling the fuck out.

but, he still has puppy energy at times when hes not sleeping all day.

I'm just like....yo, this shoe is about to drop.
