Stevie's drumming on «Reasons» by Minnie Riperton

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=en8B2xnxNRA

The energetic combo of her falsetto over his breaks has got to be one of the most jammin collabos of all time

His ride cymbal probably died and went to heaven after this

the one with Dominique, where they basically talked about As, for 15 minutes…but, absolutely the one a couple days earlier where Spencer Hall goes IN. Really good stuff.

...I'm from the era when A.I. was the answer, now they think ai is the answer - Marlon Craft

right in the middle of his own classic run - in between Innervisions and Fulfillingness' First Finale. That same year he also wrote Tell Me Something Good for Rufus and Chaka Khan, produced Syretta Wright's album, and wrote for the Supremes and Roberta Flack.

But yeah...the drums on Reasons are amazing. His approach on drums is just different from most traditional drummers - the types of patterns he'd play on the hats, the placement on his fills, the way he would build a song adding different elements, etc.

From a production standpoint it's notable how sparse the song is - no keys on it, just lead and rhythm guitar, bass, drums. Vocals are also sparse, you don't hear all the multi layered backgrounds on it that Minnie would sometimes do. He really produced it from a rock perspective, and also the sparseness makes her lead vocals stand out.

It really is very rock oriented but the groove on those drums tho. Its like he channeled Santana, Jimi & Sly all in one song and her vocals are crazy
