1st Gear: Gas Stations Are Running Out Of Gas On The East Coast

This is because the Colonial Pipeline was hacked last week and has been shut down since Friday. The expectation is that it might not be back online again until this weekend at the earliest, according to Bloomberg. When it’s operating, around 2.5 million barrels are shipped each day on the pipeline, which is America’s biggest and primarily serves the East Coast. Nearly half of all the East Coast’s gasoline, diesel, and jet fuel comes through the pipeline, meaning that its shutdown will have effects well beyond cars.

From Virginia to Florida and Alabama, fuel stations are reporting that they’ve sold out of gasoline as supplies in the region dwindle and panic buying sets in. The White House said it was aware of shortages in the Southeast of the country and was trying to alleviate the problem.

Four days into the crisis, Colonial Pipeline Co. has only managed to manually operate a small segment of the pipeline — as a stopgap measure — and doesn’t expect to be able to substantially restore service before the weekend. The risk is that by that point drivers or airlines may already be suffering severe fuel shortages, while refineries on the Gulf coast could be forced to idle operations because they have nowhere to put their product.

In Asheville, North Carolina, Aubrey Clements, a clerk at an Exxon Mobil Corp. station answered the phone with “Hello, I’m currently out of gas.” The Marathon gas station in Elizabethtown, North Carolina, had roughly two dozen cars waiting to fuel up, said an employee there.

Drivers pulling into a station with a sign offering unleaded gasoline for $2.649 per gallon in Manning, South Carolina, were met with pumps covered in yellow and red “out of service” bags. An estimated 7% of gas stations in the state of Virginia were out of fuel as of late Monday, according to GasBuddy analyst Patrick DeHaan.

the pipeline shut down is real but it will be resolved soon.

there will be a spike in price in the short term esp on the east coast

however the terminals have the product. when the pipeline comes back online it wil be flowing again

the price wont go down tho.

on sabbatical.

We didn't have a shortage of toilet paper either. We had a supply chain issue. People panicked, bought in bulk, the supply chain couldn't replen because truck space is limited and therefore a shortage happened.

I say the pipeline will be fully operational before this sunday. It will cause significant short term angst and have a bunch of people tripping but anyone who wants gas will be able to get it...by Sunday LATEST.

Might be up by Friday.

How abt small money. $5. Gentlemen's bet.

The price will spike.

Customers will pay because they think there is a shortage or they may run out.

Terminals have product.

The pipelines are intact

This is an it issue a complex one but a bit issue

It's not like there IS no gas.

Or that the pipelines dont work

Or that the trucks do not run.

There is no shortage.

23. "15% of Virginia gas stations are without fuel"
In response to Reply # 21

The percentage of gas stations without fuel was about 15% in Virginia and 3.5% in Maryland as of early Wednesday, analyst Patrick De Haan said.

The pipeline outage is contributing to supply chain issues, but consumers flocking to fill up their tanks is also contributing to shortages.

One analyst, Tom Kloza, dubbed the phenomenon #FOMOG: fear of missing out on gas.

and the 2 that did had lines wrapped around the block like it was the 70’s.

I couldn’t even get into the strip mall parking lot where Costco is because the lines were so long.

Wife was able to find gas this morning but checking gas buddy most places were out.

do you regularly keep both cars topped off?
We always try to keep tanks above half full...but we HAVE gotten lazy/forgetful over the past year since we haven't been driving anywhere. Been filling up like every 5 - 6 weeks....
The VW is sitting on 1/4 tank....that'll get us through mid June lol...

Which at a certain point creates a supply chain issue since ultimately we're talking about tankers, trucks, and drivers capacity to meet demand.

Oil ETFs and Stocks will spike in price. That’s for sure, so now would be a great time
to take some profit off the table, and go back in when oil stocks drop once things return
to normal.

and there are those who drive hybrids or electric cars.

Taxi, Uber, and Lyft drivers might start panic buying, but I don’t
think regular drivers in metro areas will go into that mode.
Their travel distance is less than those in the south or rural areas.

People in NC and Georgia are already panic buying.

Some gas stations here ran out of gas due to folks panicking. But apparently, that pipeline doesn't even deliver most of our gas. We get ours shipped in.

Paralyzed pipeline fuels spike at pump | May 12

Our company supplies gasoline on the West Coast of Florida for Shell, Exxon Mobil, Marathon and Rally stations. The problems with the Colonial Pipeline have no impact on gasoline supplies in the Tampa Bay area simply because all of our petroleum comes to Tampa by ship and barge. But today, panic buying by uninformed people buying at rates far above normal are draining tanks faster than our trucks can refill them. We are at our delivery limits trying to keep product in stores, even as there is no shortage in the tanks in Port Tampa Bay. This “shortage” is caused by customer behavior, not a problem in a faraway pipeline. This is the same problem we deal with every hurricane season when drivers rush to their station to top off when a storm threatens. It is the same cause that kept toilet paper shelves empty this time last year. Repeat: We have plenty of gas, so if we will only purchase what we normally need, the “shortage” here will disappear. Just be patient and give us a chance to catch up!
