"Anybody buy or sell a car recently? "

Looks like there is hella inflation there.

I just checked out my Carvana to see how much they'd buy my car for. They're offering just $2000 less than I bought it for....5 years and 70,000 miles ago. That's wild.

I'm halfway thinking about selling it and riding a bike for a few months before buying a replacement. Maybe the market will cool down by then

I put my info KBB and that triggered dealers to send me offers. I had to laugh. They were offering like $4k less than Carvana.

The dealer probably planned to buy the car from me and turn around to sell to Carvana

My mom didn't take 6k for her old Lincoln MDK. I told her she was bugging. She sold it for 9k last week.

I have an 07 X5 that I damn near ready to give away next time it needs to go in the shop, I am thinking of putting on the market.

It's mid cycle refresh time for several brands, so the 2021 models are coming with a LOT of incentives and rebates... My out the door price was way below MSRP AND below several used models of the same trim. Only thing I haggled with was my trade-in...08 VW Passat wagon that needed a new catalytic converter, ignition module, brakes, rust issues...they offered me $500 for it and I asked if they'd give me $1,000...they said sure...I was like SOLD lol...
So from that aspect, your trade-in could be something that works more in your favor than it normally would.

the whole point of buying a used car is to save money

feels like the housing market.

Sell my used car but now I have to buy a newer one at an inflated price.

In response to Reply # 0

agent for going on 15 years now....
He's an independent licensed dealer/buyer. He doesn't sell off a lot or anything like that. He charges a flat fee to find and buy the specific vehicle you're looking for directly. I guess you'd call him a concierge dealer?? .

Between me and family members and friends, he's purchased numerous used cars for all of us over the years. It's a HELLLLLUVA lot easier than dealing with dealerships when it comes to used cars. He goes straight to Manheim Auctions (the same place that majority of car dealers purchase from and where probably 90% of used cars in USA flow through) and does the bidding for you...

Anyway...I hit him up when I was narrowing down my choices and started seeing weird shit on Carvana & Carmax with respect to the used prices. I try to do as much legwork as possible before I secure his services so I'm not wasting his time... Anyway...I was originally shopping used 2018 & newer Volvo XC90, Nissan Armada, Buick Enclaves & Chevy Traverses.... Then I starting noticing that they used prices were just dumb high and within $5K of brand NEW prices and even MORE than brand new prices in some instances. He basically told me that the used car market blew up last summer because the new dealers couldn't get sufficient stock of NEW vehicles from the manufacturers to keep up with the unexpected demand of everyone deciding to buy new cars last year because no one wanted to fly anymore.... SOooooo the NEW dealerships with money to burn started buying up as much of the newer used stock all over the country and didn't really bargain, they just spent spent spent and thus the used market prices jumped up...waaay up. In addition, he's noted that they weren't being picky about what they purchased at auction either...they were paying dumb high prices for lemons and dealer buyback vehicles...shit that would normally get flagged at auction and would never sell.... so he said that there's also THAT concern to keep an eye out for. I told him I had been seeing a lot of low LOW mileage 2018 vehicles and I didn't understand how/why...he said that he'd be concerned that they were dealer buybacks or had undisclosed problems that just weren't caught at auction because cars were flying off the shelf so fast... He cautioned me that basically now was a TERRIBLE time to buy a used late model vehicle. He basically told me he didn't want to have his reputation stained buying a crappy car for any of his clients and recommended I buy new if it was feasible....

Turns out..it was very feasible... my brand new 2021 Traverse Premiere Red line came out to $39K... MSPRP is $46K on the trim I got... incentives brought it down to $39K. I JUST got a notice from Carvana regarding a used 2019 Traverse with 18K miles going at a "great price" of $44K... smh...

Market is fckd up for use car buyers...but it's a come up for used car sellers.

to clear out....

Think of it like this....
Major car dealers were buying ALL the used car inventory at inflated prices for a year now....that's money they've got to recoup...so until that inventory that was purchased at the inflated price dwindles out...then it's gonna be a bad look for used car buying..

But you might be on to something offloading your BMW if you can get a good price for it... I say check out Card & Bids. Folks paying stupid money on that sight for shitboxes right now.
For instance: https://carsandbids.com/auctions/rJX2XM2O/1985-oldsmobile-calais-supreme
Note that's a NO RESERVE price...so somebody is willing to drop THAT kinda money on a mid-80's beater...

Here's the recent X5 sales history:
https://carsandbids.com/search/bmw/x5

Note that I think that sight has only been up for like a year now...but it's REALLY popular and making waves...so def. look into it if you're serious about selling your BMW and want to try to get top dollar... I'm legit thinking about putting my Touareg on there.

prices are just high bc prices are high.

there aren't enough cars to get and there are enough people buying

people want a high price because they can get it, still, right at the dealership.

and dealers are still trying to get used cars because they can't get new ones in due to the chip shortage

in front of the salesperson; I guess we were vying for the same ride?

got a 2017 w/under 30,000 miles. $19,500

I wanna be happy, but it's just a cute bill (w/a sunroof, heated seats)

I been buying cars 10 + years old in cash. I haven't had to be bothered with car payments in a looooooong time. I'm used to having full coverage and Platinum Triple AAA on something just shy of being designated a 'hoopty'.

I feel like I just signed my life away.

been like that a few years now from what I understand...and ESPECIALLY now for the use car market.
And yes, Carvana wildin....but the convenience prospect can't be ignored.

In response to Reply # 29

This was pre-Covid.

They didn't outright say there is no negotiating on price. But their starting offering price was already as low as you'd get with the back and forth at another dealer. I thought the price was really fair, so I just paid it.

I think they're adopting the CarMax model. The salespeople don't get commissions. Dude didn't pressure me. Seemed like he didn't care whether I bought the car or not lol

upfront price.
The salesman mentioned something about how he was paid but i don't remember the details...I just remember it wasn't the typical commission situation that I recall from my last brand new car purchase back in 2001.
The fact that they brought multiple vehicles straight to my house for me to test drive made it even sweeter. He was like "Yeah, I love bringing cars to folks to test because it's boring as hell sitting in the dealership all day."

2021 Kia Telluride

As I said in the other post.. I lucked up on one of these..
my Highlander was totaled so I needed another vehicle.. I wasn't a fan of the new Highlander so I looked at the other comparable SUVs..

I didn't know they were that popular.. I just needed a replacement and I was really feeling the Telluride..

But I had to move fast.. The first go round, I went to go put a deposit for the Drk Gray one, unknown to the salesman that I was dealing with, it was sold by another salesman and didn't update the inventory...

I was pissed cause that one was coming sooner.. ah well

So he had a Black one on the list coming in the following week.. i put the deposit on that and picked it up about 2 weeks ago..

It actually worked out cause I like this one better...

keep in mind.. they weren't even on the lot.. these were vehicles coming in still on the truck..

Salesman did mention the chip shortage..

also, I paid MRSP.. this particular dealership had no problems selling them ...

anyway .. I probably would have gotten a nice chunk of change for that Toyota Highlander, given what's going on.. Toyota always tried to get me to sell the Highlander whenever I took the car in for service..

got the price I wanted and the color she wanted. certified pre-owned, which I prefer for the longer warranty.

inventory is definitely an issue. the dealer's side parking lot for used cards was completely empty, and every car they had was parked up front. the salesman was also desperate to take my wife's 2010 Honda Pilot (126k miles, short commute), but we weren't trading in because it is going to our high school daughter.

Carvana is crazy right now -- took one peak and no (they had 2016s going for more).

I bought my first car on my own two years ago and the biggest lesson I learned was to have my own financing ready before I walked in the door. didn't even ask the dealer to match the APR my bank gave me, and the finance guy knew tell he couldn't do any better. if you even give them a whiff a financing through them, the advantage is all on their side. when they know you have your loan secured they know you can walk out at any time.

I’m really becoming fond of the new Cx30 Turbo. I just can’t justify stepping up to a 30k car when I work from home and drive maybe twice a week.

I'm a Honda guy (three Civics in a row) but the wife doesn't like driving sedans or coupes and the CR-Vs are just ugly as fuck to me. new Pilots (also ugly) are overpriced for what she needed, HR-V is some bad compromise, and I didn't like the Rav4 or Rogues either.

CX-5 was just right for us. I hate spending more than $21-25k out the door for a vehicle, so this was perfect.

Like why????
What were they thinking??

I was really digging the CX9 but we really wanted the space of a mini van. Maybe we’ll sell the VW Touareg in a few years and cop. Something tells me Mazda is really in the midst of a comeback/come up.

I'm not sure how solid these online offers are but to get it paid off and get $3500 cash back for it would be good right now. Hoping for a bit more but that would be enough.

Thing is I'm not sure what I would be getting. I'm leaning towards a used electric car. Maybe an eGolf but I think it might be smarter to get something around the 200 mile range or above.

I need to do some more research.

but i'm biased lol...
owned in the VW family for the past 20 years... (VW's & Audi) and electrical problems are the most frequent issues I have. I's one thing to have a headlight or other electrical node faulty and throw an annoying CEL, but a whole vehicle?? nah....

I'm not sure I will move forward with it. Getting something with more range might be more than I'm willing to pay.

...you think the prices of cars, specifically used cars, will go down in price for the next few months cause of the price hike in gas on the east coast; or do you think that is only a temporary thing, and prices will fall back down on gas in a week or two?
