"Have we talked about the latest police murder in Minnesota?:"

https://www.cnn.com/2021/04/12/us/brooklyn-center-minnesota-police-shooting/index.html

The officer supposedly confused her taser with her gun, even though these items are usually worn on opposites sides of the body:
https://www.cnn.com/2015/04/14/us/taser-gun-confusion

I believe the officer that murdered Oscar Grant in Oakland made the same "mistake":
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooting_of_Oscar_Grant

Another demonstration of how aggressive these police are is shown in this video that came out yesterday of this incident that happened in December in Virginia:
https://www.cnn.com/2021/04/11/us/windsor-virginia-police-stop-army-lieutenant-lawsuit/index.html

Of course everyone is watching the Derek Chauvin trial:
https://www.cnn.com/us/live-news/derek-chauvin-trial-04-12-21/index.html

Philando Castile was murdered by police in Minnesota. His killer was acquitted:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooting_of_Philando_Castile

The police officer that murdered a white woman a year later was convicted:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shooting_of_Justine_Damond

Yesterday there was a vigil/rally for Justin Teigen on what would have been his 36th birthday. He was beaten by the St. Paul (which is next door to Minneapolis, which is next door to Brooklyn Center) Police and found dead in a dumpster on in August of 2009. That vigil/rally wasn't even over when word got out about Daunte. So folks went from one rally, across town, to demand justice for another tense stand off with police at the Brooklyn Center Police Department. National guard was already in town for the trial. We've got a 7pm curfew tonight.
I'm fucking tired.

that was in North Minneapolis, which is the part of the city that borders Brooklyn Park.
In some ways, that Jamar Clark murder was the Twin Cities' last chance to get it right with these murders by police officers. Activists occupied the police station for two weeks. People were there, self included, day and night and a couple city blocks were shut down. No charges. That really set the stage for what we saw last summer after George Floyd's murder.
Then Philando was the following year.
Then Justine Damond, the white woman shot by a black cop (who was convicted) was the following year.
It's just non-fucking stop.

I'm not crying, not upset just see it for what it is. These are not mistakes but intentional actions. This creates a rather glaring obvious weak point for this country that I won't get into here. We are historically the first to sacrifice ourselves for this country so what happens when that stops?

Own a life insurance policy and force them to pay out the premium. Progressive paying out $10 million im four days would raise a flag.

Stop supporting businesses in places these places that support these killers.

with this current case aside from the other extenuating factors the excuse that the officer "confused" her taser with her firearm is an insult to to intelligence of people with technical knowledge about the actual equipment. If you actually look at a police officer in uniform their firearm and their taser are generally located on opposite sides of the body. Its like you're driving a car and you throw it in reverse and say you thought you were rolling the window down. It doesn't make sense.

with law enforcement both historically and currently.

At the same time people still want Rapists to go to jail.
People still want Murderers to go to jail.

If you've ever been robbed before you probably want that person to go to jail(if not just given an ass whooping/outright killed)

And often times guilty parties DON'T get what they should legally due to racial/socioeconomic privilege

Our jails are full of people who don't belong there because they got locked up for nonviolent drug offenses or other victimless crimes, but SOME of those motherfuckers actually belong there.

Twenty-Five year police department veteran apparently can't tell her glock from her taser.

Wright is pulled over having an air freshner hanging on his rearview mirror. Which is apparently illegal in MN. And brings out how many cops?

His warrant was for a little over $300 in misdemeanor fines. That would normally merit another ticket.

They issued his warrant after sending notice of his fines to the wrong address.

This was all completely avoidable on the cops part and only happened because Wright was Black.

But that doesn't stop a single gas station, car wash, or convenience store from selling them.
Really, it just provides pigs with a convenient excuse to harass you. When I was young, like Daunte's age, I got pulled over for that. I immediately stopped putting those on my mirror. And then I got pulled over for having a broken tail light, that wasn't broken. Which now that I think about it was in Brooklyn Center, where this all happened.

In response to Reply # 18

a technical standpoint. The next time you see a cop look where their gun and taser are. They are normally no where near each other specially to prevent "mistakes" like this.

No matter how scared or confused you are, no matter how dark it is, if you can't tell your taser from your firearm you have no business being a police officer. One is made of steel, the other is usually plastic. They don't just hand you this equipment in a bag on your first day. They TRAIN extensively with this gear. I don't understand how there could not be a convictable charge.

Its like you're driving and you accidently throw the car in reverse when you meant to roll the window down.

In response to Reply # 0

Truth already pointed out - the gun is holstered on the dominant arm side while the taser is the opposite. In addition to that, even if you go to the wrong side - the holsters are different, the material is different, the grip is TOTALLY different, safety is different, trigger different, etc. So she had to make that mistake multiple times back to back.

Also, is it normal to shout out "taser!" before using it? That basically sounds like an officer shouting "he's got a gun!" or "he's not complying!" before pulling a trigger.

That's the only way accidental shooting's will be stopped - to literally take way guns.

Have the shotgun in the car that needs to be unlocked - and have a squad ready to be dispatched with guns if needed.

Would more people shoot police - maybe??? But that's why they've been trained, have vest, and have other officers.

I think most folks wouldn't shoot cops because they wouldn't have to - they could simply run away without fear of being shot in the back.

In fight or flight I think flight is usually what most people choose.

Police with less access to guns will decrease police shootings.

And if police instead get shot because so many people have guns then that dynamic may make some people say 'Hey, maybe guns are the problem."

this country locked in a literal death spiral that says force must be met with greater force - and we've been doing that for 60 (or hundreds) of years.

You don't need a gun to write a traffic ticket.

Yes, police shootings are part of the problem and i'm not trying to distract from that, but Trayvon Martin and Ahmaud Arbery were not killed by the police. My point was just that taking away police firearms isn't an end all solution but you seem much more interested in arguing than I am so i'll let this go.

You said that we should imitate the British system of cops not carrying guns. I agree, but my point is that the British also don't have a heavily armed citizenry, which makes it possible to not have armed street cops.

We're all upset. If you're interesting in just venting-cool. If you'd like to discuss possible solutions, I'm happy to. That also involves identifying potential issues with those solutions. Doesn't mean I disagree with the idea of the solution.

The fact is that racism, police violence, and all of the other issues are complicated and the solutions are going to be complicated as well. They're going to involve simultaneously addressing flaws in multiple systems.

>The fact is that racism, police violence, and all of the other
>issues are complicated and the solutions are going to be
>complicated as well. They're going to involve simultaneously
>addressing flaws in multiple systems.

The fact here is that if patrol officers aren't armed they can't shoot you. No gun on this cops waist band then the taser would have been the weapon they reached for. (And I'm pretty sure we also don't want people tased when not necessary too.)

This is like telling people to build houses for homeless people - they *always* say it doesn't address the complex societal problem... When it does address one problem- it stops homelessness by providing a home.

Does it solve the problem of drug abuse? No. Or how to live with formerly homeless if they have mental problems? No. Does it stop some people from leaving the home to go back on the streets? No.

But it does SOMETHING tangible that takes it in a better direction.

If solutions have to happen simultaneously and be perfect then we will never reach them.

A different problem is: Racism. A different problem is: Gun nuts in America. Those need to be addressed but aren't dependent on this.

This problem is: A cop shot someone during a traffic stop because they had a gun in a very easy to reach area. The power of life and death and they made the wrong choice. They can't be trusted with a gun - especially during traffic ticket writing.

>The fact is that racism, police violence, and all of the other >issues are complicated and the solutions are going to be >complicated as well. They're going to involve simultaneously >addressing flaws in multiple systems.

That my solution to this one problem - not a solution to all problems in America with race and the power structure.

Because it's downplaying- significantly, IMO- the role that race plays in these shootings.

Because if it's not a gun, it's a taser. Or a baton.

Or pepper spray.

Or anything else that can be used in a show of force.

Because, gun or no gun, the eagerness for and wanton use of *force* against the Black community- deadly or otherwise- is the issue here.

The near complete lack of anything resembling genuine accountability for such displays of force against the Black community is the issue here.

You're trying to argue the broader gun issue in a way that is undercutting the more specific racism issue, and solving the gun issue does not solve the racism issue.

Since we're doing analogies, I have one:

This is like you walking into a discussion about racism, state sanctioned murder, hostile policing toward the Black community, and trying to steer it toward the broader, separate, entirely different issue of gun control instead.

It's not that the broader gun control issue is invalid, it's that it's a relative footnote to the aforementioned issues of racism, state sanctioned murder, and hostile policing toward the Black community.

Because these animals would be perfectly happy beating someone to death with a baton, or a knee, or a taser, just as they are with a gun.

Sure, getting rid of guns also removes the immediacy and ease and generally more deadly overall tool, but you seem to be under the mistaken impression that taking away their guns would magically remove their desire and ability to murder Black people in other ways, to say nothing of casually harassing them.

You also seem to be under the impression that taking away their guns would then somehow make them more accountable to their police unions, to politicians, and to white people/those who support the white supremacist ideals that have allowed this shit to go on for as long as it has.

Spoiler: it won't.

So, your "take away the guns!" mantra may be a piece of the overall puzzle, but it's a relatively small piece to THIS puzzle. To that end, it sits low on the list of priorities on *this very specific issue*.

You trying to shoehorn the broader gun issue into this is a bad look, because this doesn't impact you the way it does the Black community.

Incrementalism can help lessen the effects of SOME PROBLEMS, but the litany of problems you posted above certainly won't be solved by having fewer guns alone. I NEVER SUGEGSTED THAT.

The only thing that *might* be improved by less guns in the hands of police would be less shootings like *this one.*

I can't see how you can think that me saying "Take away guns from the police" would solve racism or policing problems or anything else other than *police shootings.*

So I'll step out of this discussion now - and I'll watch for your proposed solutions and I'll support the actionable ones.

(To be fair to you there's no way taking guns away from police is actionable in this country - I believe they'd go on strike and let crime take over - or even commit crimes to increase support of the police.)

If you thought otherwise, please read that sentence again so that you're crystal clear on the subject of whether or not I care what you like or want.

Spare me the all caps incredulity too. It's tacky and gives off a MAGA vibe.

>Incrementalism can help lessen the effects of SOME PROBLEMS,
>but the litany of problems you posted above certainly won't be
>solved by having fewer guns alone. I NEVER SUGEGSTED THAT.

I said that you entered a discussion about racism and hostile policing toward the Black community, and tried to steer it toward a broader gun discussion.

People are discussing problem A, and within that, you began a discussion about tangential problem B, even though problem B won't fix the issue expressed in problem A.

Even now, you're defensively ranting about how fixing problem B will fix some things, but not all, which means you're still to busy trying to make it about the broader scope while ignoring the more narrow issue being tackeled in this post.

If B doesn't fix the expressed problems with A, then B doesn't really belong in a discussion about fixing problem A.

Get it?

>The only thing that *might* be improved by less guns in the
>hands of police would be less shootings like *this one.*

Agreed. She'd have just beaten him to death, or tased him into oblivion, or asphyxiated him with physical pressure.

Even now, you're still missing the point.

>I can't see how you can think that me saying "Take away guns
>from the police" would solve racism or policing problems or
>anything else other than *police shootings.*

I don't think that.
I didn't say that.
I literally said the opposite.

I said they're two separate discussions, about separate issues.

And you're taking the specific issue that directly impacts the Black community in a real, serious and imminent way, and choosing to interject a wider, broader, overall different and separate issue into the mix- and getting extremely and unreasonably defensive when this is pointed out.

That's exactly what "all lives" is:

When specific issues that directly impact the Black community are being addressed, those outside the Black community will say "but all lives matter". "This happens to other people too".

Another variant of this is.... "let's talk about this other thing instead".

Which is what you've done in here.

You can either accept a misstep and aim to correct it, or double down on your defensiveness. Even though you said you're leaving the discussion, you made sure you did so only after you largely regurgitated the same general sentiments that sparked my initial reply to begin with. You didn't pivot or try to rehabilitate your position.

In fact, reading your response, it doesn't look like you did any active listening at all. You simply waited for your turn to talk, and went on the defensive.

Frankly, that's another issue in these discussions: People outside the Black community doing too much talking, not enough listening.

The poster above was rather charitable in their interaction with you, but you just dug in your heels about your own thing, rather than listening. You're too invested in your own perspective on the issue you deem important to just engage on the actual issue at hand.

>So I'll step out of this discussion now - and I'll watch for
>your proposed solutions and I'll support the actionable ones.

Bye. You don't need to announce it.

Feel free to cc me with your complaint to the mods about whatever I said that you'll have to stretch and reach to even get in the parking lot of the ball park of something that's "actionable".

It's great that you're "back in", whatever that means.

But this, right here, is my very last response to you in here.

Because I've said all that needs to be said, and it's clear you'd rather derail this entire thread about a very important issue than fall back.

I'm not good with that, and I'm not going to be party to it. I was pretty thorough so there's no need to help you derail this thread.

feel free to inbox me or the mods if you have more to say.

They've been doing this forever and they're gonna keep doing this forever. The fact that this is still happening in MN of all places after all that has happened in the past year or so is fucking insane. How are they not starting every day at the police departments with "WHATEVER YOU DO, DONT SHOOT ANYONE"? How are police not telling themselves "Okay, now I really need to not take my gun out and kill this person" at the beginning of every interaction? These MFs don't watch the news? Or they just don't give a fuck?

A kid had an air freshener and a warrant for some weed BS? Honestly who gives a fuck if he gets away. Calm the fuck down, damn.

I was saying to someone the other day, if it weren't so fucking infuriating and endlessly tragic, the list of reasons these pigs ended up harassing and, in most cases, murdering Black people these past few years would almost be laughable.

- selling CDs
- selling loose cigarettes
- reaching for the license the pig told you to give him
- being 12 and playing with a toy gun
- walking home
- using a counterfeit $20
- having tinted windows
- having an air freshener on your rearview

My blood boils.

Like, you know who the fuck this is. If they get away? Okay, you'll catch him eventually...and he'll have another charge to deal with. He ain't a stone killer out running the streets and if you don't get him now he's a threat to the community.

From kind of watching the D. Chauvin trial the first week or so, my new understanding is that they get ample training. These folks need to be evaluated on a yearly basis if that's not already happening. If it is, then they need even further scrutiny and increase how often it happens. If they fail then they can't operate as an officer.

This is all dumb, but we seem to have an abundance of that in policing. I really truly wonder what the likelihood of encountering a perp with a gun willing to attack an officer is reflected in their stats. My guess is it's really low. Yet it's treated as common.

2 lanes
tractor trailer on the right, SUV and unmarked mustang on the left behind it.

SUV paces the trailer so it has enough room for a quick lane change to hit the upcoming exit, while having the cop blocked in from switching over.

SUV veers across traffic, catches the exit.
unmarked Mustang floors it, whips in front of the SUV, does a 180, and then another 180 to catch the exit. a S turn on some video game shit.

i say all that to say "you'll catch them eventually" is just not in the mindset at all. cause this cop risked his life and the trailer driver life to catch somebody going 9 over

The bad news for me is that these seem to be diseases in America period. A bunch of folks saunter and strut around thinking everyone else owes them things. Or that they should get multiple chances to improve on things. I think I understand how it happens but I don’t understand how many people aren’t adjusting to signs that shit ain’t sweet for nobody.

Are we in a spot where more cops need to start doing time and/or getting shot at when they try to do the meathead routines with pedestrians in situations where it isn’t called for?

Officer Kim Potter resigns: 26-year veteran and former union president fatally shot Daunte Wright, police said
By

Kim Bellware
April 13, 2021 at 10:44 a.m. PDT
The 26-year veteran police officer in Brooklyn Center, Minn. who fatally shot Daunte Wright, a 20-year-old unarmed Black man, has resigned “in the best interest of the community.”
Kim Potter, 48, tendered her resignation Tuesday in a brief letter to Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott and Police Chief Tim Gannon. Gannon followed suit, announcing his own resignation later on Tuesday.
“I have loved every minute of being a police officer and serving this community to the best of my ability, but I believe it is in the best interest of the community, the department, and my fellow officers if I resign immediately,” Potter wrote, according to the St. Paul Pioneer Press.
Potter is a veteran and has served as her police union’s president, the Star Tribune reported. At an earlier news conference, where authorities played a nearly one-minute dash-cam recording of the fatal incident, Gannon said it appears that Potter intended to fire her Taser but instead made an “accidental discharge” from her gun.

Potter had been suspended pending the results of a Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigation, the agency said. On Monday, Brooklyn Center leaders dismissed the city manager, potentially giving Mayor Mike Elliot the ability to fire the chief or officers in the department.
Washington County Attorney Pete Orput said he expects to complete a “thorough yet expedited” review of potential criminal charges in the case by no later than Wednesday, he told the Star Tribune.
“I’m hoping Wednesday, but I want to have the opportunity to give my condolences to his family and explain to them my decision,” Orput said.
Minneapolis criminal defense attorney Thomas Gallagher explained how police officers can use traffic stops to enforce laws that make "trivial things" illegal. (Luis Velarde/The Washington Post)
The suburban city of about 30,000 residents has been rocked by Wright’s killing as the Minneapolis area watches the ongoing trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis officer charged with murder after kneeling on George Floyd’s neck for over nine minutes.
Minn. police officer who shot Daunte Wright apparently meant to use Taser but fired gun, police chief says
According to local media, Potter has retained attorney Earl Gray. Gray is also representing former Minneapolis police officer Thomas Lane, who has also been charged in Floyd’s death. Neither Potter nor Gray immediately responded to messages from The Washington Post as of early Tuesday.

Potter joined the Brooklyn Center Police Department in 1995, according to her LinkedIn page. She was first licensed as a police officer in Minnesota at age 22 that same year, the Star Tribune reported. In 2019, she was elected president of the Brooklyn Center Police Officer’s Association, according to the group’s Facebook page. She was also a longtime member of the Minnesota Law Enforcement Memorial Association, where she served on its “casket team.”
Potter, who is married to a former police officer and has two adult sons, most recently worked on the Brooklyn Center police’s negotiation team, the Star Tribune reported.
She has been involved in one fatal police shooting in the past.
In 2019, Potter was among the first to arrive at a home in the Minneapolis suburb after two officers fatally shot a mentally ill man six times after he allegedly lunged at them with a knife, according to a report released by the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office last year.

Once paramedics arrived, Potter ordered both of the officers to leave the house, sit in separate squad cars and deactivate their body cameras. As the union president at the time, she escorted one of the officers from the scene back to the police station and was later present when BCA investigators interviewed both officers, the report states.
The officers were not charged in the fatal shooting after prosecutors found they acted with “reasonable fear” after first firing their Tasers.
Potter’s actions in Wright’s death are shown in the video released by police on Monday.
A little before 2 p.m. on Sunday, two other unnamed officers and Potter pulled over Wright because of allegedly expired registration tags. Potter was acting as a field training officer and was training a new officer on Sunday, Brian Peters, head of the Minnesota Police and Peace Officers Association, told the Star Tribune.

When the officers asked Wright for his identification, Gannon said at a Monday news conference, they found Wright had an outstanding warrant for a misdemeanor and attempted to take him into custody.
The video clip shows Wright slipping from an officer’s grip and returning to his car. That’s when Potter pulls out her gun and yells, “I’ll Tase you!” and then “Taser! Taser! Taser!” before firing.
Seconds later, Potter yells, “Holy s---, I shot him,” apparently realizing that she had fired her gun instead of her Taser.
Wright drove a couple of blocks before crashing into another vehicle, police said, and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Peters defended Potter’s prior record as an officer on the force.
“She’s just a very dedicated, passionate, good person. It’s completely devastating,” he told the Star Tribune. “She just a good person, always willing to help out.”
On Monday, the Hennepin County Medical Examiner said Wright died of a gunshot wound to his chest and ruled his death a homicide.
City officials on Monday clashed over whether Potter should be disciplined beyond her suspension as the BCA investigation continues, with Elliott, the mayor, saying the officer should be fired. Gannon and then-city manager Curt Boganey said they wanted to hear from the officer herself, citing due process. Boganey was fired later that day, giving Elliott the power to potentially fire the chief or officers on the force.
“Let me be very clear: My position is that we cannot afford to make mistakes that lead to the loss of life of other people in our profession,” Elliott said at a news conference. “So I do fully support releasing the officer of her duties.”

Def another department IMO. That's how it always happens. And it'll happen quietly, and in like 10 months or so they'll commit some other racist, violent act and the media will finally let us know.

And it's come up in their feed at least twice since, following various other instances of pigs harassing and/or murdering Black people.

They should probably just pin it to the top of their fucking feed.

All that aside, it is absolutely brilliantly put together and does a terrific job of connecting the entire racist history through to today. A lot of eye opening details.

why can there be a similar system with law enforcement?

And when you screw up that license is revoked so you can't just go to the next town and get a job.

the other thing is law enforcement charges should automatically be handled at the federal level so the same prosecutors that work with police every day won't be expected to hold them accountable.

Its easy to say that but its becoming increasingly hard to find people that want the job outside PTS'D ex-military vets.

83. "Am I alone in fixating on the TASER TASER TASER thing?"
In response to Reply # 0

I'm stuck on that detail.

Because the way it looks for me is that she's yelling that out for the benefit of the camera, as well as her fellow officers.

Because this means the camera shows that she "thought" it was a taser, and her fellow officers can say they heard her shout "taser!", indicating they- and she- thought she was using a taser.

Then reading that they keep their gun on one hip and a taser on the other, makes me wonder.

It all reads to me like she knew she had her gun, but was screaming taser. It feels very premeditated and calculated, as though she was actively creating plausible deniability for what she was about to do.

I'd expect an officer telling him that he'd be tased if he didn't comply or what have you, but this wasn't that.

It doesn't come across to me like she thought she had her taser. It comes across like she wanted to make sure everyone knew she "believed" that she was about to use a taser.

To be clear, this doesn't change anything about what she did or how she did it, and I don't know whether or not there's a good legal leg to stand on with that angle, but I fully expect the defense to play that up if it ever gets to trial.

You're presenting it like she had it all game planned out. Like she was just waiting for the moment to kill someone and this was her opportunity.

That's a huge stretch in my opinion. A simpler explanation is she was just negligent

>You're presenting it like she had it all game planned out.
>Like she was just waiting for the moment to kill someone and
>this was her opportunity.

I wouldn't say she woke up planning that, or pulled up planning that.

But in the context of this video, it comes across to me like she's playing to cameras, eyes and ears.

>That's a huge stretch in my opinion. A simpler explanation is
>she was just negligent

It's simpler, sure. Occam's razor and whatnot. I get it.

I don't know if shouting "taser taser taser!" is the protocol, and I could be wrong about that. But that feels very performative the way it went down.

I don't buy that she didn't know she had her gun and thought it was a taser.

I used to be much more charitable in situations like this, and it's possible I've swung so far that I don't allow any benefit of the doubt for cops.

Actually, I'll just say I have. Overall, I view everyone in that uniform the same way. There are way too many bad apples that have been recorded, and I assume that there are far more that haven't been recorded. And it's not just the murders that make me think that.

So yeah, I'm aware that I'm probably reaching in the way I view this. I'm mostly just wondering if i'm alone in that reach.

exactly, if you can't tell the difference between a taser and a gun you have no business working in law enforcement, if you're so scared or confused that you don't know which weapon you're drawing from which side of your body even though you are 26-year veteran on the force I don't know what else to say

I believe this woman was actually training new officers the day of the shooting

IMO, both her and Chauvin were showing new cops how to get away with murder.

Chris Cuomo: Police reform comes when ‘white people’s kids start getting killed’

https://nypost.com/2021/04/17/chris-cuomo-police-reform-comes-when-white-peoples-kids-start-getting-killed/

CNN anchor Chris Cuomo said gun laws and police reform will happen when “white people’s kids start getting killed.”

The host of “Cuomo Prime Time,” who just last month claimed on-air to be “black on the inside,” claims to have the answer on gun and police reform.

“Shootings, gun laws, access to weapons. Oh, I know when they’ll change,” said the anchor. “ your kids start getting killed. White people’s kids start getting killed.”

Cuomo at one point in the monologue attempted to affect the hypothetical accent of a confused white parent, asking:

“What’s going on with these police? Maybe we shouldn’t even have police,” he said, before directly addressing the whiteness of his audience:

“That kind of madness. That kind of mania. That will be you. That will be the majority. Because it’s your people,” said Cuomo, while looking into the camera.

that a 20+ year officer couldn't tell gun on her right from a taser on her left.

Then the defense attorneys asking if she can go home for Christmas?! Fuck that, Daunte Wright can't go home for Christmas!
