"Amazon Series: 'Them'"

I'm currently binging this...it's uh

just, what the fuck is going on?

I couldnt tell what was happening in the previews but I was hooked and interested. Now that I'm watching...I feel the same. A LOT is going on, a lot of layers are being explored.

I can't tell if this magical reality, demons...or a mixture of several things.

Deborah Ayorinde is a great actor in this...and shes fine AF.

This could also just be titled "MENTAL ILLNESS; THE SERIES"

A lil bit shameless, no? With the pitched down / screwed music and all. Its too early for an homage and it doesnt even feel like one, it just feels like she took his two movies and turned them into a TV series

With that said I think the show is cool. But she’s linestepping

i thought Lovecraft was a little blunt but this show is throwing trauma at you like it was BOGO. at no point did i feel like anything i was watching was meant for my (black) entertainment

that shit is for white folks. Watchmen and LC were too popping so I expected a trend of shitty imitations

squeezing them tight... why am I watching this? I always feel like I have to finish stuff even when I don't like it. Watching shit like that is not good for me personally. I should have stopped at episode 2 when I knew I wasn't feeling the show. I need to be better at managing "fomo" where these TV shows are concerned and just saving myself the upset.

this was an explainer for people who aren't familiar with redlining and most other aspects of plain old american racism

watchmen and lovecraft were much more interesting, even with lovecraft's scattershot approach to storytelling

That is what its supposed to do but I also understand why some people refuse to watch it.

Feel the need to announce how much they hate the show

Are what's wrong with the culture

Like...what's wrong with yall?

Yes it's a direct bite of jordan peele. I grant that.

However

It's scary. It's terrifying. And...it feels...if not real then like it COULD have happened

And maybe what I hate most abt you lop sided dingbats with that bullshit is you the same ones that'll cry and whine abt how pigeon holed and same everything is

Why can't we have black romance?! Then when one drops y'all shit on it and say it's like everything else

Why can't we have black horror?! Then when one drops you shit on it and dismiss it without even seeing it and say it's like everything else

Y'all just annoying in general

Be diverse and expansive. This was a horror, supernatural show at its core. To bring home the realism that many of us horror fans expect, they had it in a true historical context. I get why many would be turned off by the racism theme but just in terms of watching show shit that will scare u, I don’t see how u can hate on this show

A horror film that is centering Black people and doesn't deal with racism

What does that even look like

if racial reality is not addressed in fiction then the creators could be accused of creating a false reality or that its hard to believe in a world that doesnt at the very least acknowledge inequality in some way.

in film and tv

I'm sure the Racism is Horror theme has been written about in fiction before. So maybe that's why some folks think its tired out.

To me its still a breath of fresh air to a genre (horror) that has felt stale for a while now.

I was literally having chills and on the edge of my seat. The show was very well done and all the actors brought it. As part of this new horror genre overlaid with the real racist horrors, it just hit all the marks.

I really liked this, it did what it was supposed to IMO. I was enraged and afraid for the characters. It’s heavy and although I find criticisms like “it’s profiting on Black trauma” a bit misguided I do get why ppl wouldn’t want to watch this (Black ppl specifically)

The eternal haunting back story of the man in the black hat and Ms Vera was really well done.

I give it a 10/10

My wife and I watch a ton of horror, and for the genre it hits a high bar

Then when you add in the historical elements, and the really stunning visuals, it becomes a really powerful show.

There are shows we can binge five in a row, but this is not one of them. You need a break after a couple episodes I find, because it's definitely heavy (maybe heavy-handed too at times)

How many shows have there been about white flight? Gentrification is a topic that's discussed in a ton of films, shows, and art, but the topics of white flight and HOAs and redlining are not touched on in popular culture at all.

this was some motherfucking art.

It's a horror film and a psych thriller set in the mid-century.
Racism was the evil itself, but it was also part of the landscape.

Ya know, the feeling of this was like a dissociative fugue

profiting off black trauma? are you fucking kidding me.

the more we talk about black trauma, the more we name it, the more we put it up front....lessens anyone's ability to deny history.

Racism happened. Violence against black bodies happened. Redlining happened.

It didnt happen waaaaaay back then, it happened yesterday, no, actually, literally yesterday.

from the previews I was getting Lovecraft vibes...

You take the blue pill, the story ends. You wake up in your bed and believe whatever you want to believe. You take the red pill, you stay in Wonderland, and I show you how deep the rabbit hole goes.

derivative of Lovecraft and Jordan Peele stuff in general. And that was before I heard any reviews which are all saying its trauma porn for no good reason. Is there anything I am missing that would make it worth watching despite all of this?

It's good horror for television.
My favorite thing about it, and the lone similarity to Peele's excellent film works, is that there's no white savior.

The flashback origin story episode--of American white supremacy, endured through modern times--is a fantastic interpretation. I didn't realize how well it was as a narrative device until the final scene of the episode.

The actual premise of the story may be fictionalized, but even in my own family there are multiple relatable historic truths that match the touch points hit.

It's good.

...and apparently needed, to at least work as a subtle reminder.
Earlier this week I watched that late night House Judiciary Committee debate considering H.R.40 for selection to be voted on in the House. Every Congress member from the GOP arguing against the study--from that Bootstrappy Mormon Burgess Owens of Utah, to that sex-abuse facilitator Coach Jim Jordan of Ohio. They all bombastically spouted mis-information, falsehoods and lies discounting anti-Blackness and the systemic denial/theft of wealth for the Black creators of the nation's riches.
