i can't explain why...but its just a thought that I'm not yet able to articulate, but in this moment in 2021, when I look at those spaces (of which I have worked), I just think of white supremacy/exclusionary tactics/paternalism and a buncha other icky shit.
I'll be able to articulate why I'm thinking this in few days after thinking about it. It's not tech or startups specifically either...

I get it...
I grew up in it. I was at UPenn from 97-01. EVERYTHING we learned was "Say you know things you don't know and buy the book later". This was specific to interviews but it permeated the culture of the school.
Every time someone would come to talk to us it would be a CEO of a gen 1 dot com that was trying to change the world. Even after the 1st dot com crash most of those folks just reinvented themselves as VCs or figured out new companies.
By the time you get to Zuckerberg's generation, you are already in a fully formed eco-system and schools that begin catering to the mindset (esp. Stanford)
When I watch the Fyre fest doc, I am reminded that there is a VERY thin line between that guy and most start-up founders.

We have an Xbox and playstation in our break room. I have never seen anyone use it and these people love their video games.
