That said, I'd take that sweet Saudi money in a heartbeat.

*sigh*

i can't explain why...but its just a thought that I'm not yet able to articulate, but in this moment in 2021, when I look at those spaces (of which I have worked), I just think of white supremacy/exclusionary tactics/paternalism and a buncha other icky shit.

I'll be able to articulate why I'm thinking this in few days after thinking about it. It's not tech or startups specifically either...

what the fuck is it?

I get it...

I grew up in it. I was at UPenn from 97-01. EVERYTHING we learned was "Say you know things you don't know and buy the book later". This was specific to interviews but it permeated the culture of the school.

Every time someone would come to talk to us it would be a CEO of a gen 1 dot com that was trying to change the world. Even after the 1st dot com crash most of those folks just reinvented themselves as VCs or figured out new companies.

By the time you get to Zuckerberg's generation, you are already in a fully formed eco-system and schools that begin catering to the mindset (esp. Stanford)

When I watch the Fyre fest doc, I am reminded that there is a VERY thin line between that guy and most start-up founders.

Why go home, there's food here.
Why go home, you can play some ping pong here.
Why go home, you can have a beer here

and then the managers and bosses walk around looking at you like “the fuck is you doing? Get back to work”

We have an Xbox and playstation in our break room. I have never seen anyone use it and these people love their video games.

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

Most of the places I worked at in the 2010's made heavy, heavy use of the bars. It definitely took a few years off my life.
