"The women's weight room at the NCAA tourney is worse than the Ramada"

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/ncaab/2021/03/18/march-madness-ncaa-slammed-unequal-amenities-men-women/4759012001/

NCAA vice president Lynn Holzman took accountability for the bad look.

"We acknowledge that some of the amenities teams would typically have access to have not been as available inside the controlled environment," Holzman said. "In part, this is due to the limited space and the original plan was to expand the workout area once additional space was available later in the tournament. However, we want to be responsive to the needs of our participating teams, and we are actively working to enhance existing resources at practice courts, including additional weight training equipment."

The "limited space" claim was called into question after a video was posted by a Rutgers staff member of largely vacant facilities.

An Instagram post from women'shoopz showed that the weight room facilities weren't the only ways the men's and women's bubbles differ.

Women's tennis and golf is just as interesting as men's.

Football and baseball don't exist, but softball is just as watchable as college baseball.

Soccer...on a national scale (olympics) I'll say that the women's game is as interesting as the men.

But basketball? I think part of our evolution is to be able to say "look, we gave it a shot, but nah."

UCLA won 88 straight games and that didn't make the sport less interesting.

Not all teams are good, the disparity even within leagues can be jarring, especially compared to the men.

But I'm not gonna sit here and pretend that the sport is deficient. It's good basketball when the talent is good. It's unwatchable when the talent gap is huge.

Especially given that you say women's tennis, golf, and soccer are just as interesting as men's.

I would think it would be all or nothing, since the same critiques usually apply (slower, less powerful, less athletic, etc.)

it's only different because the ladies can't get high enough.. layups are boring. Pitchers duels are boring in baseball. People want to see BIG plays.

>layups are boring. Pitchers duels are boring in baseball.
>People want to see BIG plays.

They just don't play with the same dynamic bounce. The bigs are lumbering typically, and the guards quick enough, but the game isn't all that springy. Rim lowering wouldn't change that.

Right now basketball serves the same purpose for women that football serves for men. Athletes of all body types can contribute at the same time.

A proposition would be the widen the court a bit, move back the three point line, and then shorten the length of the court a bit. Widening it would allow more spacing and free flowing movement horizontally and runs to the basket. Shortening the court would facilitate faster transition.

As far as layups being boring. The youth are all about their "jellys" and off balances right now.

Here's what the women's game looks like when the paint isn't clogged

..The NCAA is a fucking joke, but women get the short end of every stick when it comes to sports. This is one of the main reasons Kobe Bryant was such a visible/vocal advocate for women's sports overall (not just basketball).

Instead of comparing men vs women, perhaps you could recognize that men benefitted from decades of support and development in areas like strength & conditioning (largely based on patriarchy, prejudice, and privilege).

That same privilege is on full display in the OP. If you're not upset about this problem, then you're part of it. © Sedona Prince

More disparities in the NCAA bubble: the women are getting less accurate COVID antigen tests while the men are getting PCR tests, known as the "gold standard."

I've put out two requests for comment to the NCAA but haven't heard back.

I watched my sister deal with disparities when she was playing D1 sports and on the professional level. From the facilities to the travel budget...it’s all unequal. Not to mention the pay. All of it is wrong and needs to stop. I remember how the women athletes were treated at my HBCU and it’s the same in the CIAA. Ridiculous smh.

..not just the part that supports the ignorant argument you're making.

The profit made from men's sports is due largely in part to the massive investment made to ensure those enormous returns continue to grow. Stop acting like men's sports were always the cash cow that they're known to be today. Building that support and structure takes time & effort.

No one is expecting things to be equal over night, but the paltry examples of support for women shown by the NCAA this week was embarrassing.

Y'all sound like a bunch of people who simply don't want to admit that you're sexist and don't appreciate women, when those very same women are often pleading for the same opportunities and support given to their male counterparts. The saddest thing about all of this is that we know for a fact that men's collegiate and professional athletics would've grown stronger and faster with a more substantial investment during its early stages. That same intel can be used to help improve women's basketball and other sports in general.

my wife heard the money Saban was making per season and was furious. “Why does he make so much” but then the screen zooms out and you see 100K people in the stadium.

Could the funding be more even without hurting the overall budget? probably

But at the same time a lot of college sports lose money every year.

to Lebron's annual basketball salary of $37m and how both "GOATS" should have a more equal salary. How much are people paying to go to their games? How many jerseys are they selling? How much tv money are their leagues bringing in?

Its like saying the CEO of a small company with 100 employees should have the same salary of a CEO of a fortune 500 company.

It seems like basic economics.

Why is there less interest (and as a result, less money) in women's sports?

I don't think it can all be boiled down to lack of slam dunks and stuff like that. There's a big cultural aspect to it.
I think many view women's sports as less than simply because they include women.

Take golf as an example. Are more people tuning in to men's golf events simply because they drive it harder off the tee? I doubt it.
I'd say the big spectator attraction in pro golf is the skill of the players (which I'd assume is abt equal between the genders), not necessarily driving power (where men have the advantage).

So why is viewership (and as a result, prize money) lower for women's golf?

I could make the same case for women's soccer, but there'd be much more debate. But to me, men's and women's soccer looks identical. But the interest and pay gap is huge. Again, why?

When it comes to basketball if people are being honest most women that like basketball for various reasons can tell you way more about Steph, Lebron and KD and can’t name a WNBA player to save their lives.

I’m not that familiar with professional soccer but I would think the economics are similar to basketball.

In response to Reply # 59

and I dont care about Gold at all until Tiger so that could be part of it. The best women golfers are usually Asian these days too which could be part of the problem with viewership and attendance.

If we had more Black and mixed women in golf maybe viewership would improve.

which brings me to Women’s tennis. That shit is popular. Really popular. Fun to watch and has some real stars in the game.

....

so yes, I think it does come down to the physical with women’s basketball. I’ve watched a lot of college ball but not the WNBA. Sometimes womens ball reminds me of Ivy league basketball. Fundamentals on point but just not as exciting most of the time vs more athletic ball like the mens game.

and yes, game above the rim is definitely a prime reason women’s basketball isn’t as popular. Back when women first started dunking we would tune in JUST to see if it would happen with certain players.

Because it can't be the athleticism thing anymore. In men's volleyball, they jump higher, hit the ball harder, move quicker, etc.

I guess it's the outfits that make the women's version more watchable?

The mens game is all about power, which sounds good, but in volleyball it actually makes it more boring ..The Women tend to have more of a finesse game with much longer rallies (more action) and lots of defensive plays and more creativity overall.

Sounds like you're talking about beach volleyball.

Sure, it's basic economics, but you're using gross oversimplification economics.

She still makes less than he does on a percentage basis. They can still make equivalent money relative to their respective leagues.

I did the research on this several months ago when this meme started circulating, and while I don't recall the exact number, I learned that the WNBA was only allocating roughly 20% of league revenue to their players, whereas the NBA has a 50/50 split, or close to it.

The current CBA allows for a higher percentage if certain metrics are met for 2021. This is still a far cry from the NBA CBA, and in general, WNBA players still receive a significantly lower cut of revenue.

That's not even looking at the differences in support that would enable WNBA growth.

It's unreasonable to expect Sue Bird to make what Lebron makes, because it's literally impossible in the current WNBA economic climate. But that doesn't mean that she, and others, can't receive a significantly more equitable share of their own pie.

51. "Women’s basketball exhibits the purest form of basketball "
In response to Reply # 0

when it comes to ball movement and moving without the ball,
especially in comparison with the NBA.

One of the best championships I have ever seen played was a few
years ago, when the Lynx played the Sparks. I also believe it is the
highest rated game in WNBA history.

However, I have been watching women’s basketball since the NCAA days of
Sheryl Swoops ,when she did a Danny Manning and won the NCAA chip. So
I have an appreciation for the game.

The problem is revenue. The women’s game doesn’t generate anywhere near
what the men generate. And Men’s NCAA BB is carrying Women’s NCAA BB.
Women’s NCAA basketball wouldn’t be able to exist or stand on its own without
financial support from the Men’s game. The WNBA used to be the the same way.
NBA Owners were carrying the WNBA, and went years without making any kind
of profit. Also, it was the NBA that gave birth to the WNBA, riding off the hype
and success of the Women’s 1994 Olympic team...

You would think the women’s game would be more popular than what it is in this
age of advanced technology. But, in my opinion, women’s BB was way more
popular in the 90s. And Lisa Leslie and Swoopes had a large part to do with that.
They had Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan-esque appeal, and Swoopes was
the first woman to get a signature shoe deal ...Not a single women’s player in this generation Of BB has a signature show deal.

It’s crazy how women’s team sports can’t generate the massive followings that
individual women’s sports generates. Women’s Tennis and Track and field are
just as popular as the Men’s, if not more popular. And women track athletes get
paid more than Men! There is no Men’s track athlete right now as marketable as
Allyson Felix, Jenny Simpson, Molly Huddle, Shalane Flanagan,etc...That goes
for gymnastics, too. No one gives a fuck about Men’s gymnastics.

Can’t front I care way more about women running 100 meters and long distance
than what women do on the basketball court ...and I can’t explain why that is.
Men have have arguments over women’s tennis and T and F all the time, about
who the greatest and fastest is.

Women’s BB? Not so much.

I think the sport has to be just as elite as the men’s. Women’s
soccer has the same problem. It’s not the same form of skill.

Serena is just as elite as Federer, so there is no drop off. But
Candace is no way as elite and electrifying as James Harden.

Same thing with MMA , Nunes comes in kicking as like the men.
So it’s like Damn...It’s exciting.

baseball, hockey, soccer, etc. And those are sports that are hugely popular at the professional level. Its the same at the high school level. Elite level basketball teams and players play in front of crowded gyms(pre-pandemic) for regular season games. HS state baseball championship crowds are usually mostly parents, family and a few friends.

true.. but there tends to be a shocking upset every year in the mens bracket the first 2 nights. That rarely ever happens in womens basketball.

My dark horse pick (#5 seed Arkansas) got knocked off by a #13 seed from my hometown.

Women's college ball can be top heavy with the same handful of teams competing for the title. But it's no longer just UConn and Tennessee anymore. As more and more young women start playing, there's more parity.

There have just been tons of barriers for women's basketball over the years and up to now. Lack of resources and lack of encouragement are 2 big ones. I imagine there's probably a lot of women who didn't play ball because men kept discouraging them by saying, "I wouldn't ever watch them," or "They're not as good."

all in the first round. There's A LOT of talented young women in college, right now. Yeah...Gino, Gary Blair, Tara V. and a few others are going to get the elites...but, there are ballers on a ton of these teams. That's how Troy can take T A&M to the brink and if not for a questionable call, maybe win.

I did say women are discouraged by men. But I'm talking about girls being discouraged from playing ball as little kids. And that kind of thing continues into teen years and on and on.

There are lots of dudes that have some mean things to say about women when it comes to playing ball. I'd bet that stuff starts on the elementary school playground.

no one is being discouraged from playing sports unless its football due to CTE.

I think time is the biggest issue with sports. Parents either dont want to drag kids to and from practice or kids dont want to play a sport if their friends aren’t playing it.

but popularity? As in being discouraged because people say it isnt a popular sport?

man, have you seen attendance at HS or JR high games? Dont let the Friday Nights fool you. There are tons of empty ass gyms and stadiums for boys football and basketball

I really dont think anyone is discouraging girls from sports. Especially when you can get a nice scholarship for sports like soccer, volleyball, lacrosse, etc.

IMO not being skilled or talented is the real reason kids stop playing.

WCBB makes money for the top ten teams. WCBB is making money for this March madness tournament. The WNBA is a different animal. I saw a lot of points being conflated.

WCBB sells out stadiums, has rabid fans, sells tons of merch. The WNBA stuggles to put two thousand fans in seats.

That's definitely the dream matchup with her & Adia. I love Dawn too. We got to meet her in 2008 when the Final Four was here and she couldn't have been nicer. I'd be hyped for her if she won too.

And I'mma be honest. As much as I'm pulling for Arizona, I think this is Stanford's year.

Good thing there was an instant classic Final Four game.

Overall the women's Final Four went harder than the men's.

...Y'all still didn't talk about though lol.

Now you've resorted to childish attempts at insults and failed. Good show, ol' chap!

..You took an L because you made an ignorant comment.

You admitted you were wrong, but doubled down on the ignorance by making a snide remark about the convo surrounding the women's games.

Now you attempt to turn this into a pissing contest?

LOL

Grow up and move along.

This why I only hang with real niggas. You can't even talk ball with you insufferable sensitive niggas without y'all putting on a skirt. Fuck outta here.

Nigga got 51 pages worth of OKS posts and ain't talked about women's ball yet, but in here with a cape on.

Go to a barbershop and learn how to act around men.

..I have plenty of evidence of my support of all things competition, without a hint of gender bias.

I could link several conversations regarding women's sports (including athletes, coaches, orgs, governing factions, IOC, NCAA, etc.), but I don't need to in or to confirm the fact that you're an idiot and incapable of making a substantial point about anything relevant to the subject at hand (or otherwise).

Me & my girl talked about it. We weren't sure that she would get picked up. She's tough but she's a little under sized. She plays way bigger than what her height is. A lot of her contributions on the court might not show up on the stat sheet. She could probably go overseas if she wanted to continue playing.

So we were watching the WNBA draft & her name came up. Our jaws dropped. We literally ran out of the house to go next door but their house was dark & the cars were gone.

Man, I'm so happy for her.

i like where they're going w/ the direction of the presentation. I dont know that the WNBA game will ever be popular but I dont see why the athletes themselves cant be. its just gonna look a bit different than the men.

same way how men and women rappers are popular for different reasons
