With alot of the major studio films pushed back. Steven Yeun, Chadwick Boseman, and Lakeith Stanfield are Oscar nominees. I can dig it.

How are both Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield supporting actors for the same flick? In that flick, I could understand if Meth Damon was considered a supporting actor, but both Daniel Kaluuya and Lakeith Stanfield had some heavy lifting. I'm not complaining that they got the nominations, I'm genuinely confused.

Perhaps I don't watch enough movies to fully understand.

**edit**

To bring some positivity to my response, it was good to see that One Night In Miami get some recognition. I thought Regina King should have gotten a nom as a director because the storytelling in the flick was top notch and didn't get too stale. But then again, I'm not a huge film buff, so what do I know?

To get them both a nomination, which im not mad at. Means Steven Yeun and Riz Ahmed didnt get bumped or Lakeith not even make it. But Lakeith was obviously the lead in that movie, with Fred Hampton as the supporting or background character.

Which means voters independently decided to give him votes for Supporting.

What almost certainly happened is that he ended up getting (a) many votes for Best Actor, and (b) many votes from people who wanted to get him a nomination but didn't think he'd make it into a very strong Best Actor field, instead choosing to write him in as Supporting Actor, because that field looked rather thin this year.

So he ended up making it as Best Supporting Actor. Which is honestly great news for him, as he wasn't going to make it into the field as Best Actor. (It might be less good for Kaluuya, as maybe this splits some votes... but the Supporting field is so weak this year that I think Kaluuya is still likely the sizable favorite.)

This all *looks* weird, of course, but in ensemble movies, they shift co-leads all into supporting all the time. Like, Leslie Odom Jr. is imo one of two co-leads in One Night in Miami, as is Cohen for Trial of the Chicago 7. Paul Raci is the only true Supporting Actor in the field, lol.

I'll defer to you about the voting politricks because you seem to know more about that aspect than me, but In One Night in Miami, that is more of an ensemble movie IMO since I thought the Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, and Sam Cooke characters all shared equally heavy lifting in terms of the drama/tension and dialog that took place in the movie. In Judas and the Black Messiah, the two characters that I felt were true supporting characters were the ones played by the CIA agent that supported Lakieth's character and the love interest for Kaluuya's character. I don't see Judas and The Black Messiah as an ensemble movie since not all of the actors shared equal amounts in their relative loads in terms of dialog and dramatic aspects in the movie.

To be clear, I'm not that upset about the nominations because Judas and The Black Messiah was a pretty flawed movie from a structural standpoint IMO, so I'm not upset about Lakieth and Kaluuya getting Supporting Actor nods, I'm just confused.

When I said "ensemble movies," I meant movies without a clear lead in a category, not necessarily movies with a group of people. If there are multiple leads in a movie, but you weren't seen as "carrying a movie," even if you were a lead, you have a better shot in Supporting.

Someone brought up Viola Davis in Fences on Facebook, which is a good example. She is very clearly a co-lead... but she ran in Supporting, because the perception was "it's Denzel's movie," and she knew she'd have a better shot at winning if she ran Supporting.

Like you said, it's politricks. And this time, it wasn't even from the studio, but from the voters themselves, which... is pretty crazy, as it doesn't happen often. That said, I bet Stanfield is happy it worked out this way, lol.

Nomadland is the heavy favorite. Trial of the Chicago 7 currently second favorite in Vegas... but no director nom for Sorkin, so you have to think it's Nomadland's to lose.

He killed it in Da 5 Bloods. I thought that was going to be an easy Best Supporting Spot.

I feel like Nomadland is going to be the darling and get the awards.

I think Yuen just might get the Best Actor win, but then again the Academy loves to give out posthumous awards.

Clearly the Academy just didn't like Da 5 Bloods that much. Only one nomination for Best Score. If the movie had gone over better, he'd be in the field for sure.

That said, no one was beating Chadwick for Best Actor anyway. That's a foregone conclusion.

It's getting love because it's about Hollywood and has flashy style... but I'd be very surprised if they gave the Oscar to Fincher for his worst movie to date over Chloe Zhao.

people like you from running up in his house?

You'll never hear Jay-Z say "Defund the police" either, that's a broke boy's trope.

besides the problematic idea of equating police officers with identity when its a job, nobody's asking him to hate anyone

he acting like he was asked to hate and is refusing

no. hate will always exist..people gonna always have some irrational issue or predjudice. that's not the problem

its the hate encoded into laws and policies that's the problem...he on some surface level kumbaya shit that's cute for an award show speech but that's about it

a white person is free to hate me but should not then also be in a position of power to direct that hate to undermine my life, freedom or pursuit of happiness

same for police officers. that role hold ways too much power. they should NOT have the power or means to kill us in the street without any sort of due process

fuck that job and fuck 'policing'

all police officers are tool of white supremacy. and just because some rich black people are ok with that shit working for them does not make it ok at all.

he is a wonderful kind and generous human being.

that is MILLIONS OF MILES more important than the fact that he gave a corny ass, surface level speech

y'all have theeee worst frame of analysis with most things, as usual.

work to be critical. If the speech does nothing for you, you can still allow that other people got something out of it.

The irony is you are making his point.
