"What's the plan for the $1400?"

What you doing with it?

It's starting to look like this will get finalized. Won't be shocked if GQP will have some stunts to delay it but I'm guessing it will get through. Don't know how long it will take the house to approve the changes they make in the senate.

I have some questions. Are they still going off 2019 income? Is it only for adults or is there a payment for kids too? Any changes being made to who qualifies for unemployment?

Looks like they're caving to limiting who can get the partial stimulus payments. Same limits as before to get the full stimulus but the phaseout is coming down. From $100k to $80k for individuals and from $200k to $160k for couples.

https://www.politico.com/news/2021/03/03/senate-push-covid-aid-bill-473261
https://www.washingtonpost.com/business/2021/03/03/biden-limits-eligibility-stimulus-payments-under-pressure-moderate-senate-democrats/

Bernie is supposedly still pushing for the $15/hr increase but I'm guessing that's dead. I kind of understand why they tried to push it through as part of this but if they didn't have the votes it seems like it was a bad idea. Even though I expect they will try to raise the minimum wage outside of this bill (and hopefully succeed) a lot of people will see them taking it out of this as a broken promise and failure.

If you haven't filed your 2020 tax return - they go off your 2019 income. This becomes strategic for filers who have had changes in their income. For example: if your income was below the income threshold in 2019 (but you had an increase in income in 2020 above the threshold) - you should wait to file your taxes (and even apply for an extension) so that your 2019 income will be used to qualify you for the stimulus check. Conversely, if your income decreased in 2020 and is below the threshold (but your income was above threshold in 2019) - you should file your 2020 taxes ASAP so that you can qualify for the stimulus.

I haven't seen it mentioned but it makes sense.

That's the biggest issue I see with these payments. I get that the first one was urgent and rushed so they had to go off something, they chose 2019, fine. By the time they did the second one they should have had some mechanism to make sure people that did well in 2019 but were struggling in 2020 got payments. Now that the dems are in control I hope that they are addressing this. I haven't heard anything in regards to it though.

If they are going to go with 2020 unless you haven't filed I think a lot of people are going to be surprised and disappointed.

Will the stimulus check be based on my 2019 or 2020 taxes?

The most recent Democratic proposal (PDF) states the IRS would determine your total third stimulus payment based on your adjusted gross income, or AGI, from either your 2020 or 2019 tax returns -- whichever the IRS has most recently on file at the time of payment.

There may be several implications to this. For example, if you earned more in 2020 than in 2019, but the IRS uses your 2019 return (and gives you more stimulus money than you might be eligible for), you won't have to return that money (more below).

The IRS is now accepting 2020 tax returns. We recommend filing your taxes as soon as possible for several reasons. The earlier you file, the sooner you'll get your tax refund (you can estimate the total here) and any missing stimulus money you claimed on your return. You'll also have a chance to set up direct deposit with the IRS, or fix any errors, which could get your third stimulus check to you faster.

In the prior rounds, there was a gradual phase out. If your fam made above 150k you still got money, just a little bit less. Then at 200k and above, the money stops completely.

In this deal, the hard stop is at 160k. A fam of 4 making 150k would receive $5600. But a fam of 4 making 160k will get $0.

I don't know what they consider income. But I imagine there's gonna be a lot of folks trying to move some numbers around to get under that limit.

Not sure there's room to fudge the numbers though. If they are going off taxes filed they already have the information.

What I want to know is how much are they saving by tightening this up? Supposedly that money is going to be redirected to hospitals but I want receipts for that.

I was at like 82k last year. For the $600 round, I got like $250. In the $1400 round, it's now looking like I get zero.

Thanks West Virginia.

That said, my only plan was to pay down debts, and that's what I'd done with all the previous ones. So I guess by definition I didn't need a stimulus check. I'm really only annoyed by the fact that I'm so close to such a sharp cutoff.

I've been in this pretty crummy apartment I had to find on the fly since a breakup 4 years ago, and COVID has made me realize how much my excuse for staying (its central location between three neighborhoods I enjoy) wasn't something I actually took advantage of that often and I should just get closer to work so I can walk more often/Uber way less and let the rent hike get covered by a huge drop in travel expenses.

Though, of course, I'll dip in for a PS5 at the first opportunity if I can as well.

Blah source but I would think this is accurate, I haven't seen it mentioned elsewhere though.

https://nypost.com/2021/03/04/kamala-harris-breaks-tie-to-begin-senate-stimulus-debate/

"The bill includes $350 billion in state and local aid and provides a $1,400 stimulus payment for each dependent child. It grants through August a $400-per-week federal unemployment insurance subsidy."

Forgot about the child tax credit part, I had seen that mentioned before. Not sure if it will be a check.

"For parents, it also authorizes a $3,600 annual tax credit per child under age 6 and $3,000 per child up to age 17. Those funds also are phased out for earners over $75,000 or joint filers above $150,000. A family of four earning less than $150,000 could bank more than $14,000 from the bill, according to an analysis from CNBC."

Okay some CNN links with much more detail. Looks like some people that couldn't get payments before will be able to.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/03/03/politics/stimulus-check-eligibility-senate-bill/index.html

"Unlike the previous two rounds, adult dependents -- including college students -- are expected to be eligible for the payments."

The child tax credit will be a check with the option to wait until taxes or get monthly payments. I guess this applies to 2021 income.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/02/07/politics/child-tax-credit-democrats-biden/index.html

Some other stuff:

first time it was $500 for kids up to 16, then $600 for kids up to 16...this time it's $1400, with no cap on dependent age.

Extended to September instead of August. Along with limiting who will get stimulus payments I am wondering why. What did they get in exchange for making this change?

I guess the math is almost a wash? When would it had changed, April?

$400 x 5 = $2000
April
May
June
July
August

$300 x 6 - $1800
April
May
June
July
August
September

I'd say by every measure the first option is better for people that need it. What is the benefit in extending to September if you end up with less? Is this another half percent of the 1.9 trillion that will be redirected to...what?

The steeper cutoff on the stimulus payments is reportedly being redirected to other things. I'm guessing the same will be done with these "savings". I want to know how much the supposed savings are and where they're going.

Republicans are pushing to end it in July and lower to $300. Manchin is reportedly onboard with the Republican proposal due to the tax-free provision for the first $10,200.

That provision actually is a nice win if it stays, I would think that would be worth lowering it to $300.

Democrats are trying to get Manchin onboard with their proposal.

To be clear, the provision is in the Democratic proposal, Manchin doesn't like it.

I reread my post and saw it could be read as saying Manchin is supporting the Republican proposal because it includes the tax-free provision.

That little thumbs down curtsy she did was fucking gross. Like its cute that she decided to decline to vote for people having a livable wage. AFTER LIVING IN POVERTY HERSELF AS A CHILD. All the wigs and outsifts are disguise for the fact that she is a fake Democrat that is only interested in being a show. Ive never seen someone so enthusiastic about fucking her own people that put her there. Wannabe fake ass John McCain in a teenagers outfit.

They're both from Arizona and they both used a thumbs down signal on a vote - they are the same????? (NOPE)

I really don't know what Manchin or Sinema got out of this. The Republicans running against them are going to use this vote no matter what - why add income restrictions, lower unemployment and boot out the minimum wage hike?

Who knows??

i thought they would have to cut it off when it was first announced. i figured they would at least need to compromise on it but nope it went through without meaningful objection.

i just hope people understand it and they dont take the monthly payments and get shocked when their refund is much smaller come tax time. its cool they increased the amount too though.

making it permanent would be big.

another thing they put in the bill is increasing funding to expand medicaid. for those stubborn states that havent done it, if they do so now they will get paid to expand medicaid. it doesnt just cover the costs but they actually get extra funding. im sure some of these states wont take it but hopefully at least some do.

theres a lot in the bill that hasnt been reported much, or that i have missed reporting on. most of it pretty good.

i think i am too. i decided to go ahead and replace my wireless headphones. i could had just traded them in for something that costs the same but nah i want to upgrade.

i picked up the sony xm4 cans on sunday. even with the trade in value of my old ones they were kind of expensive. they went on sale monday so i price matched, cool.... but so did the momentum 3s. i went ahead and ordered those too so i can compare. so far i am liking the momentum 3s more. i wish they werent $70 more but i think i might keep them.

yesterday i started wondering if i should keep both lol no reason to do that really. i even was thinking ill give my brother one of them but it probably makes more sense to stick to the plan and return one.

im not sure how much of this is because of the stimmy but im gonna blame it.

thanks for the cans joe and kamala!

I've been thinking about replacing my Bose QC35 (1st version), was looking at those Sonys initially but I read that they feel heavier and not a comfortable as the Bose. I do wear mine for 2-3hours straight regularly so even though sound quality and noise cancelation are important I realized comfort is key for me

the sony are so light, no real complaints on their fit. the momentum 3 are pretty big but surprisingly comfortable. i had vmoda before, those were heavy and had quite a bit of pressure. compared to those the momentum feel great. i dont feel any pressure and the ear cups are so soft. they feel less secure than the sony though.

i was worried about the adjustment mechanism as some people said theirs were loose and wouldnt stay as positioned. my pair dont have that issue, you need reasonable force to adjust them and they stay as positioned.

if you want something that doesnt stand out and is comfortable the sony are definitely a good choice. they didnt quite have the sound i was after, at least not without the noise cancelling on. the momentum sound pretty much the same with noise cancelling on or off. the noise cancelling is not as good as sony though.

seems like you really need the noise cancelling on to get great sound though. i need to figure out if im okay with having noise cancelling on by default. my inclination is no.

they dont sound bad at all but there is an immediate difference when i listen to the momentum. theyre more to my taste. would be nice if the momentum had more features or at least the battery life of the sony.

i do need to try to EQ the sony without noise cancelling on to see if i can get them to sound how i like. i dont think i want to tweak the momentum at all but i need to listen longer.

thats why my initial plan was to get he momentum. only got the sony because they had them in store and the momentum were not. figured i would try them and if they surprised me i would keep them.

have you listened to both? im not sure how i can describe the difference in sound.

they're just not worth what they cost if you're not using them with anc turned on

68. "i think the xm4 are a good deal, especially at the current price"
In response to Reply # 67

at least in comparison to what else is available. all companies charge a dumb premium for bluetooth headphones and they all want to include ANC.

i feel like it is easier to justify getting the xm4 at their price than it is the momentum. the xm4 have very good sound, not very far off from momentum to my ears. the ANC of the xm4 is much better than the momentum.

even though i think the momentum are the better fit for me i would probably recommend the xm4 to most.

in the end it will be like $100 out of pocket but it is 100 more than i had to spend to just keep what i had that worked fine lol

might end up $125 because theyre being funny with the $25 certificate i had. they put it on the receipt like a discount so i dont know if they will refund it if i return the sony.

if i do keep both then i am wilding but if i return one im saving most of the stimulus.
