"Poll question: Are Middle Easterners and South Asians their own races or are they White..."

Because in terms of the US census, Middle Easterners (including Arabs, Persians, and North Africans) are currently grouped together with Whites and South Asians (including Indians, Pakistanis, and Bengalis) are grouped together with East Asians. Yet I always viewed them as their own races.

Poll result (18 votes)
They're separate races (9 votes)Vote
They're Caucasian (2 votes)Vote
They are either subsets/offshoots of Asians and Africans (0 votes)Vote
Race is doesn't exist and/or is a social construct (7 votes)Vote

There is only one race. That is the human race. Now, there are different ethnicities
and cultures that make up the human race, but we all have the same anatomical
makeup.

Cultural identification has to do with the areas and environments that we evolved in.
Middle Easterns are simply Middle Easterns, based on the cultural foundation of
their surroundings and the language they speak.

Remove the concept of black and white from your vocabulary and thought
process.

Members of those communities are definitely racialized (differently than other racialized groups are) and it should be reflected in any population data they're included in.

I don't disagree race is a social construct, but racism is too. The real and measurable impacts attributable to racism (eg. profiling/discrimination, harassment, violence, wage and wealth gaps, malnutrition, dispossesion, excess/exacerbated disease, death, etc) won't go away by just pretending race doesn't exist.

If we want to fight back against racism i.e. raise awareness and/or direct resources, protections, relief to communities disadvantaged by the unique way they're racialized... how could inequities even be addressed without first identifying a community and their experiences??

And regarding the US Census specifically, I remember reading the CB was laying groundwork to disaggregate MENA communities but it got scrapped (eg. https://www.npr.org/2020/11/14/932594879/biden-wants-census-to-see-invisible-groups-lgbtq-middle-eastern-north-african).

I actually think it's great Biden & Kamala want to resume those efforts, but I hate how the timing never works in the Dems' favor. For example, efforts initiated during the Obama-Biden admin were later scrapped when Repubs took back the Exec branch right before the 2020 Census, and I'm sure Repubs would do the same next time they're in power this decade etc. Sucks.

But *shrug* what are they gonna do right. Might as well try. Maybe other branches of the US gov need to get involved, I donno.

It is a man-made construct. There are just different communities of people, who
have unique cultures and languages. It is the very thought that separate races
that breed racism.

That concept was generated by European/American Caucasians to promote a
system that white was/is the superior race, and that all other races are physically and
and mentally inferior. That ideology is still propagated by white supremacists. Hitler’s
biggest campaign was that Germans were superior to Jews, and that they needed
to be exterminated.

Racism, classism, sexism, gender bias, etc are all forms of miseducation that have
tainted our minds, so we judge and categorize people based off those practices. We
have to unlearn that behavior or model of thinking if we truly want to integrate as
a society.

A baby is born simply as a human, unlearned and untrained to any man-made model.
That baby will evolve based and what it has been taught or what it has learned. No
one is born a racists, It is something that is learned.

We must unlearn systems of hate, and learn to appreciate and digest all cultures. It’s
no different than a language or learning how to speak a language. But we must first
understand that we are all HUMAN, and we are all entitled to the same liberties and
and freedoms, regardless of culture, language or finances.

addressed in your perspective, practically speaking?

Walk me through how this unlearning translates to less real-world deaths, violence, disease, incarceration, etc in a racist society that abandons collecting race- and ethnicity-based data?

or about what others believe. It’s about what you do and the knowledge you
have. Quit looking for people to give you the answers to what’s already inside
you.

Race does not exist. The only reason you think that way is because someone
told you that, just like someone told you that you were black or a nigger. Those
are simply titles that don’t define what you really are.

No big project or movement needs to be created. I treat everyone as a human being.
I’m not worried about what they think they are or what region they come from. I see human, and I go from there.

Why would I worry about how others classify themselves?

Also, I do not need people to appreciate my so called blackness, I just need people to
acknowledge me as human, which allows me the same liberties as all other humans.

My presence is enough.

I mean, some people have lost their lives and/or freedom just because of their perceived 'race' or ethnicity. Like, they're dead. Or in prison. Or under surveillance. Or hungry, homeless, ill, etc. Doesn't it do them a disservice to dismiss the real-world costs they've paid as some meaningless abstraction?

I wasn't trying to defend the validity of race as a construct per se, and I'm not saying your philosophy doesn't make sense. I even kind of agree with you that we're all just humans.

I just think it's a rather impotent framework in the face of what we know to be racism's countless mechanisms. Why can't your philosophy coexist with, or even animate, an informed and systematic fight against racism using all tools available??

One could even argue that an informed and systematic fight against racism is what would afford you the peace and liberty to simply be and be treated as a human being, as you say.
