Latifah & actors/music artists like her aren't committed enough to do a show for long periods of time, yeah when she first came on the seen with "Living Single" it was her big break and it did well, but now she's just doing it as a steady income until the Hollywood covid conditions are lifted.

I was surprised that Taraji stayed on "Person Of Interest" as long as she did before getting the role on "Empire"; and I still think Angela Bassett will quit "9-1-1" when the whole covid-19 protocol is lifted in California.

It’s good, I’m on episode 3.

The Americans- people rave about this show, don’t they? it’s pretty good but I don’t love it, on Season 2 now.

30 Coins- Super over the top horror, in Spanish. I feel like the show had potential but it’s way too ridiculous. First episode felt like a season finale.

Just finished rewatching Sopranos, so good.

I wouldn't put it past 45, Mcconnell, Hawley, or any of those mfs

There were a couple parts that felt over the top, but I saw an interview where Bush + Renz remind us that what they depicted is not even a fraction of how fucked up white supremacy actually is, particularly during that era. Can't really argue that.

I tried posting here abt it after I watched it and used the word great, but wild is a much more accurate/appropriate word choice. Agreed.

*Spoilers within*

I know they may have been trying to highlight that folks should be attentive at all times, but... Why would she not even check to make sure she was getting in the Uber she ordered? Where in the entire hell did the little girl come from in the hotel elevator (and dressed like THAT) no adult supervison or anything? The guy she tried to escape with, as strong as he was, just suddenly became useless to point of getting killed quite quickly and easily, and she had to kill the slaver herself. I know the story is about a female hero and all, but damn. The agendas here were more important than good storytelling at some key spots in this movie... mostly the transitional spots, which can really ruin a story.

Concept was cool tho. It's a shame, because if it didn't seem so slapped together, it would probably be one of my favorite movies right now.

>Why would she not

This isn't that uncommon, is it? And given the psycho couple were intent on kidnapping her due to their father's/father-ILs obsession w/ Monae's character... would that even have made a difference? They could've just lied, no? Like:

"Hey, are you Abigail?"

"Yes Ma'am "

etc.

Where in the entire hell did the little girl come
>from in the hotel elevator (and dressed like THAT) no adult
>supervison or anything?

Well I mean, where did the creepy flower delivery guy come from (who obv worked for Denton as he was wearing one of those BD pins)?? And psycho red-head girl i.e. Denton's daughter, when she got into Monae's character's room (and was also wearing a BD pin)? The little girl/psycho red-head girl's daughter was dressed the same as how she was earlier in the movie when she was "in character" at the family's plantation, so maybe she'd just come from there or was about to go there etc. I actually think the Denton family might've even owned that hotel or something, bc that would make sense of why the flower guy and psycho red-head girl and the little girl/psycho red-head girl's daughter were able to gain such easy access. Additionally, if the Denton family owned that hotel it would help explain how they knew Monae's character would be in town for that specific conference and at that specific restaurant that night in order to abduct her (eg. remember her creepy interaction with the front desk, which she just assumed was bad customer service?). Denton was a racist wealthy election-rigging POS whose name was plastered all over (eg. the huge re-election ad the ubers drove past when Monae's character was being abducted) and had a huge following. It'd actually make total sense that the plantation and re-enactment park were not his only properties in the area. He was like a Trump.

The guy she tried to escape with, as
>strong as he was, just suddenly became useless to point of
>getting killed quite quickly and easily, and she had to kill
>the slaver herself. I know the story is about a female hero

Hmm... I think useless is a little harsh on dude. Denton intentionally went ham on him first (which they also did at the start of the film when they were trying to subdue/recapture he and his wife... so maybe neutralizing the Black man first was/is the actual tactic). And also we have to remember he was enslaved at that point... who knows what kind of injuries he might have been fighting with? Even that shit they did to his back earlier in the film could have rendered him a weaker fighter still by the time of that later escape attempt. It's not like they were being taken care of/had access to healthcare or anything.

If your issue is with the idea that little Monae could have taken out Denton tho, then I donno... I don't think we should put anything past a woman trying to fight her way back to her child/family. And maybe that was a point Bush + Renz were trying to make intentionally? Denton's confederate thugs brutally murdered that guy's wife right in front of him, which must have been excruciatingly traumatic and emasculating etc. Maybe not only brutalizing the Black man but taking away all he had to fight for (and rubbing it in his face, by making him clean up her remains in that death shed) made him a weaker fighter and more susceptible to Denton's intent to kill him once and for all. In contrast, throughout Monae's time at that plantation we see her reminding herself of her family (eg. running her hands over the replica of her daughter's picture she carved into the wood) and her motivation to escape. And perhaps that made her a more desperate and ruthless fighter.

The agendas here were more important than

But here's the thing. When you take an Uber, there's not only a description of the car picking you up but also a headshot of the driver. Maybe I'm different, but I always look at those things to make sure I get in the right car. Perhaps I'm giving humans too much credit again lol.

The theory that Denton owned the hotel does make a lot of sense. But then, I think if the movie wasn't lazy, that wouldn't have to be a theory. It would be revealed at the end of the movie... or sometime during. The reveal would make a for a great moment. And I still don't get why they little girl would be running around the hotel in her plantation clothes by herself... other than for a creepy movie moment. Maybe if someone had commented on her outfit, and she said "I'm part of a reenactment" or some shit. Gimme something. Did her mama lose her? Idk, just weird to me lol.

>Hmm... I think useless is a little harsh on dude. Denton

The idea of neutralizing the Black man first is worth mentioning. I can't help but think it's either intentional or just... lazy that it wasn't. We do hear a good speech about the empowerment of the Black woman from Janelle's character however, which was a nice movie moment imo.

>And also we have to
>remember he was enslaved at that point... who knows what kind

These are legit considerations. Imo, the movie fails in that they have to be assumptions rather than things we can confirm.

>If your issue is with the idea that little Monae could have
>taken out Denton tho, then I donno... I don't think we should
>put anything past a woman trying to fight her way back to her
>child/family.

I don't have a problem with women winning/beating up dudes. I just hate that there was a Black man present who was pretty useless in the fight. It wouldn't have ruined the movie in the slightest had they escaped together.

>And maybe that was a point Bush + Renz were
>trying to make intentionally? Denton's confederate thugs
>brutally murdered that guy's wife right in front of him, which

Yaknow, I'd think he'd have that much more rage inside him to kill the guy after what he did to his wife. Like... I can't even imagine. That's actually another level that just turned me all the way off. If some racist mufucka did that shit to any Black man I know, that Black man would rip him apart with his bare hands. Don't get me wrong, grief affects people different. However, he was even saying all this shit under his breath while picking cotton, like he was just WAITING for the chance to get at dude. The ease with which he was killed just didn't add up. Seems like there should've been more fire and determination on his part as well.

>Lol, I'm just glad to get a chance to talk about it. No one I
>know in real life has bothered to check it out. I def think
>it's worth watching tho.

Lol, yeah I hate when that happens. I actually watched this with a lady friend. I fell asleep (because I was tired) and woke up to her saying she didn't like it, because it wasn't the horror film she expected. I thought it was probably good and her expectations ruined it for her. I was actually glad it wasn't a horror film and liked the actual concept better. Just had other issues with it.

Stories focused more on 'underworld' power brokers like Big U, Hatian Jack, Supreme Team, crew, etc.. and how they shaped hip hop

Some great footage and stories so far, and a fresh take just in the sense that these are people you see pop up in other docs and stories as behind the scenes, but are never the focus

at least that i've ever seen

the buildings are all occupied, and DTLA is weird in the sense that there's also so much construction going on and money going into it, but in the sense that these people are corralled into this area and how it's pretty much it's own world reminds me a lot of it.

there are mini skid rows and tent communities all over LA now though

here's a 15 year veteran homicide detective.
here's a cop who worked skid row for over a decade.
here's a forensic pathologist who's done over 1000 atuopsies.

here's gary. middle aged neckbeard who lives with his mom and has a youtube channel. he says the way the elevator door closes is hard evidence of an lapd conspiracy. i mean, he's watched the video 200 times.

now let's hear from six more people just like Gary

i thought they brought it around with that poor death metal guy, and it showed even though these people could be well meaning, bored busybodies trying to find purpose, that outside the Dark Water thing, they turned out to be ultimately useless. to their credit, at the very least, they seemed to admit most of the shit they said was wrong.

Dropped off a couple months ago and didn't pick it back up, but I was impressed by all the worlds they were bringing together (although Justin Long's American character drove me crazy.)

I left off at ep 5, and the ending seemed to be hinting at the start of a love affair that I wasn't too excited about.

At first I wasn't feeling it because there is no story line, but after watch for a while it was actually good.

Google describes it as "Intimate and personal moments from the lives of the black community of Hale County, Alabama, forming an emotive impression of the historic South and consequences of racism while upholding the beauty of life."

I ended up liking it.

I couldn't help thinking "how many tall, dark skinned niggas are there on the French streets?" He was the only one in every crowd they showed him in. He couldn't be that hard to find in the same city all the time, even in disguise. Paris ain't but like 3% black.

Didn't matter too much to me tho. It's just like watching Superman or Supergirl with people not recognizing them with their glasses off. Not gonna hate on a black lead if I can sit and watch that.

Goddamn if it's slow, my wife tapped out about 15 minutes in.

I almost tapped out halfway through ep.1

But by the end of the first and the whole second eps I realized sometimes that slow start / slow burn whether a book or a show or a movie, is rewarded.

Definitely feel like it picked up in the second and looking forward to finishing

Finishing strong is a whole other issue with these series

A 70's NYC PBS music/talk show. Season 1 is on Amazon. It's awesome. Ali, James Baldwin, Nikki Giovanni, Al Green, Mandrill, Bill Withers, McCoy Tyner...etc...etc. Long form interviews, spoken word, musical performances.

I just watched an episode with LaBelle. Awesome!

so interesting to me on several levels. One being the way James Baldwin refers to Nikki Giovanni as "Baby" so often when he disagrees with her or is trying to impart another point of view. I think of her as the person who would talk to me like that and it amazes me to hear someone talking to her that way. Of course the content of the conversation are also interesting. So many things they say can apply to today.

In response to Reply # 0

Watching it for the very first time.

I like to immerse myself into a show when I watch it by reading posts and listening to episode-by-episode podcasts. But that's hard to do with The Sopranos without stumbling onto spoilers. I've tried listening to a couple of episodes of the "Talking Sopranos" podcast, and while they're reviewing the show episode by episode, they're also talking about the show as a whole very fluidly. So Imperioli and Schirripa will occasionally just casually reference things that happen in later seasons and then I get annoyed with myself for listening. But then I go back and listen again because I really like hearing them talk about it.

What I'm saying is, I'm enjoying The Sopranos. That Bokeem Woodbine character in that one episode was overwritten though.

It's such a good show. It triggers a lot of nostalgia for me as I was basically AJ's age with an older sister at the time the show aired and grew up in NJ. Definitely more rewatchable for me than The Wire, the "other" GOAT HBO series.

Pod Yourself A Gun is another fun podcast where each episode is loosely based around an episode of the show. I think they may drop little spoilers once in a while though.

I powered through the first episode and got pulled into by the 3rd and really want to solve the mystery about what was going on and by episode 5 I was firmly hooked.

But episode 6 has been messing with my head and got me down right angry.

I think it was worth watching and maybe I would even describe it as a good watch, but I've never been left more frustrated by and ending (and that might even be in a good way).

I don't know if I can recommend it, but I want more people to watch it so I can talk about this series.

It was straight. They definitely maintained a really creepy vibe. We got a few good character development set ups right off the bat.

I was a little caught off guard that they caught the killer in the same episode. I was expecting the story to play out over at least a couple of episodes. I hope they don't make catching killers easy like Jessica Fletcher.

Showing everyone’s real name kinda felt like reading liner notes mixed with trading cards. I liked that they didn’t go too heavy into the Pac/East-West shit. Just a story about a guy.

Was the concert footage offbeat for anyone else? Like, his rhythm was way off.

years ago I binged Breaking Bad and loved it.

now my wife and I are doing Ozark...well, we were, she finished, I'm lagging.

I was thinking of trying BCS but I'm not sure if its a good fit for a binge worthy show. I tried the first episode years ago and it didn't catch.

thoughts?

But the first three seasons aren’t necessarily for everyone, I get that. It all comes together beautifully though IMO and Rhea Seehorn is the most underrated actress out.

It was good until the ending. It had that Sundance ending where it just... ends. Like a documentation of life. No punctuation on the conclusion, exactly. We just see that things are progressing in a certain direction. Both Adam Driver and Scarlett Johansson did some really good acting in it.

emotional dynamic (generally speaking) so accurately that women would side with the wife and men would side with the man. I actually thought he handled things poorly prior and she was handling them poorly in the present, for the most part. She made reconciliation rather impossible because she couldn't let go of previous hurt and came across vindictive to me... yet it was due to him being careless with her feelings and desires during the marriage.

For some people I know this was easy to gloss over, but if somebody told me the movie's emotional stakes were COMPLETELY ruined for them when it turns out that the husband DID DO what for most of the movie he's only suspected of doing on the part of the audience, I'd let them hold that. Again, I really, really hold Marriage Story in high regard, but that was hard to reconcile with this one thing that honestly still nags at me about it.

I get why you want to pull what Adam Driver's character did out of the realm of speculation into fact for the benefit of ScarJo's character, but to that point a lot of the movie's tension rests on who you believe in a given scene or who's being the / a bigger asshole, but once you know what he did it's kind of like...she's right, y'know? At the end of the day she's right, and as a child of divorce whose parents separated because they just plain aged apart from each other in every way from hobbies to politics, I kind of wanted to see a movie that accepted sometimes that's all a divorce is about, not some big betrayal but a series of small, unintentional ones.

It also retroactively raises questions about Adam's behavior in scenes prior to that reveal and whether he's truly emotionally abusive while ScarJo is just kind of going through it, and you can tell those aren't things Baumbach intended for Marriage Story to be about.

People saying it was just god awful and all this were just being extra imo. Sure the Wesley Snipes character was silier than he should've been, but it had its funny moments. It's as good as I expected for a "straight to streaming" sequel.

watched them all, straight through. A lot of intricacies that I didn't know. Bobby's death was so frustrating to me, for some reason.

Finally getting around to this after a pod I like raving about it for weeks and...yea, this is some good shit. The HBO production of Angels in America still lingers around in my subconscious and this is a perfect modernization of that play/story.

It's got the same penchant for creative flourishes and turning normal conversations into metaphors and allegories, but since it's from the UK perspective it has the interesting perspective of the AIDS crisis being a mostly U.S. (New York) borne illness that the rest of the world struggles to take totally seriously...which also makes it probably the best COVID-related thing to come out so far.

watched up to the middle of season 6 and lost interest. also this was maybe half a year ago so my thoughts on the show will be hazy and half-remembered. i was sucked into the show in a way that hadn't happened in years (my tv and film viewing cratered over the past decade or so) and that was a very enjoyable feeling

the best thing about this show is that it never stops moving since you're following like 4 storylines in any given episode. there are always new characters to meet and old ones to revisit. it is a fantatically paced show. it also looks amazing. the production value is off the charts. this seems academic but it matters to me beceause my suspension of disbelief with TV and film is kind of weak; i often end up thinking about the logistics of making the scene (where the cameras and mics are, where the actors are keeping their sides, how the people being filmed are the actors vs them being the characters, etc.) rather just going with it. due to the presentation and brisk pacing i was unusually immersed in GoT and remembered how engaging a well-made film or tv series can be. great stuff!

there is simply too much to get into with the breadth of charcters and storylines in the show. i can't even get my head around it as i type this. i liked the lannisters, i found the starks to be overly earnest, and it took me a long time to buy into the stannis story arc. jon snow eventually won me over. it was easy to root for arya. the show's portrayal of evil as something both high concept (joffery, the boltons) and very grounded (random acts of malice) was interesting. the violence was often jarring and the results gruesome. i thought the show presented a pragmatic view of life. if you want something enough you just make an effort to get it and do whatever you need to make it happen. i also enjoyed that there were lot of times throughout the seasons where women were at least as powerful, important, and pivotal as the men in the show and historically that has not been the case with TV and film

some random thoughts about the show that have stuck with me over the months:

• my favorite bits in the show were the two-handers between jaime and brienne and arya and the hound. sometimes nothing is better than two characters getting to know each other

• emilia clarke is not a great actor or daenerys was underwritten. i thought daenerys was a cool character who did a lot really amazing things and wanted to enjoy her scenes more than i did

• lena headey is unbelievable. her motions and line deliveries as cersei are so subtle, practiced, and convincing. masterful stuff

• the red wedding legitimately surprised me even though i had awareness of it due to its impact on the social media and media criticism cycles. i didn't know what was going to happen — or when — but i knew *something* was going to happen. it was a genuinely shocking scene and i'm glad i got to experience something similar to what the makers of the show intended despite "knowing" about it beforehand

• tommy carcetti's haircut in that era always killed me every time i saw it. i never got over it and i think it affected how i viewed littlefinger and aidan gillen's portrayal of him. i think gillen is not the best actor and is just a super charismatic person whom the camera loves

• peter dinklage's acting was great. his accent was not. i'm not sure how carcetti was able to away with a misplaced accent but dinklage couldn't

• i started skipping the torture porn scenes pretty quickly into that story thread. it became masturbatory at a point and no longer served the story. i didn't particularly care for theon but they didn't have to do him like that

• jonathan price is such a good actor. i knew his ass was jonathan price the actor when he first appeared and i still bought into his weird passive-aggressive cult leader. however the church/cult storyline is one of the reasons i started to lose interest in the show

there is way more but i might be too far removed to recall it fully. i did genuinely enjoy most of what i watched and enjoyed enjoying a TV series for the first time in ages. at some point i might revisit and finish it. i do feel like i got a lot from it even with my incomplete viewing. most series tend to peter out no matter how good they are and the ending is generally disppointing because it's impossible for it to live up to the highs that the series achieved. closure generally doesn't interest me so getting back in might be a challenge

I started the show back at the beginning of quarantine and wasn't really feeling the first few episodes. Went back to it in January and I'm enjoying it now.
Franklin is funny to me because he's what 19? 20? And the most confident, cocksure muhfucker on the planet. In 3 seasons, he's expressed doubt exactly 1 time. He always knows exactly what to do (even when he's wrong). That's what's most unbelievable about him.

I'm also amused at how much they try to make the black characters look like they're in the 80s, but don't do the same with the white characters (Teddy) or even the Mexican characters. They could all be in 2021.

I jumped into this and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I finished Wandavision after catching up on Doom Patrol so it was time.

I think I'm gonna wait until Falcon/Winter Soldier is done to binge it all the way.

I've never read a trashy romance novel, but now I can say I've definitely seen one on tape!

Kristin Davis is ON ONE here, and the kid/teen/adult(????!) being played by Kelsey Grammer's daughter (she's 29 in real life, but the movie is VERY fast and loose with her character's age) just had me picturing a disapproving Frasier Crane in the background of most scenes.

Anyway, there's some good WTF type laughs to be had but it sounds like it hit Netflix's Top Ten due to the queer romance at the center, only for the LGBTQ community to be deeply offended by the portrayal. So! It's a very Lifetime type movie otherwise. Grab a bottle of wine and you're good to go...if you want. Which you might not.

My favorite Letterboxd review so far:

"wanted gone girl for gay people, got split for straight people? pass"

Kristin Davis literally shouted "yippee!" when her character rode a bicycle for the first time in years. It's too high budget for Best of the Worst, but it's damn close.

It's interesting, good, and weird.
I'm halfway into episode two and the structure is just strange to me.
There are some dramatized moments, some archival footage, and a lot of Peck talking... not necessarily as an "expert" though.

Anyone else seem this yet?

I made a post in PTP and got crickets. I can see why one would think the vignettes odd. I'm thinking that it might gain some context with multiple viewings. Anyway, I think it goes a long way towards introducing concepts of white supremacy that many like to hide from. I've talked to "white men" and they love to go on and on about civilizing the savages and how Africans and Native Americans are "lucky". This series blows all that up.

Couple scenes that stood out to me were: white boy saying "don't make me call the cops" in regards to the truck; the asshole dog walker (fuck you mean it aint a big deal!?); the blood seeping up from the concrete as that white bitch says "as long as I don't live in a crack house;" Mike...Mike's mother in the rain; the way the prison visit scene played out; white guy, "911" <--lol; dude moaning like a hippo.

Gentrification.

It's so stupid. Like all the actors involved are like... on the spectrum. You know exactly who these people were in high school.
And the rest of these dumb-dumbs who followed along with it have spent way too many time watching sci-fi and super hero movies. They think the real world functions like the fucking Avengers.

And I can't be the only person who noticed... Ron Watkins clearly thinks of himself as being L from Death Note. Right down to his hair styling and use of a single-letter pseudonym.

Watched all of these recently and would recommend them (highly)

Dealer: “ Tensions erupt when two filmmakers infiltrate an area ruled by gangs to shoot a music video for a rapper.” (France, 2021)

Zero: “ A teenager with the power of invisibility is dragged into a criminal's quest to rule the neighborhood.“ (Italy, 2021)

Snabba Cash: “The lives of an ambitious businesswoman, a troubled teenager, and a charming gang enforcer collide during a desperate, and sinister, pursuit of wealth” (Sweden, 2021)

had only seen the first 2 seasons.

Really liked the Oakland one. Probably had the most likeable group of kids, but Jason Brown in Kansas has def been the most entertaining coach lol
