Both seasons are great (in fact I probably liked season 1 a little more, if only because I'm a Boston/New England native and that season was about corruption in Providence RI) but the 2nd season is about Kilpatrick and Detroit.
The pod does a really thorough job of telling the whole story IMO. And his backstory about how he came up from a young age is really fascinating as well.

...official. The other guy is Jimmy Dimora, the man who Cuyahoga County (essentially Cleveland) for years as commissioner. He got busted for the same type of stuff Kilpatrick did.

For a couple of reasons.
It's supposed to be an Executive check on the Judicial branch. And theoretically, the legislative branch can check the president with impeachment if he uses the pardon improperly. But that doesn't work when all the pardons go out on the last day in office, or if he has a compliant Congress. Again, theoretically a president could have a DC hit squad murder folks with the promise of no consequences.
And the way they are given out are unjust. The only way to get a pardon is if someone with influence advocates for you. Regular pardon requests get tossed out. But let a Kardashian say your name and you have a chance.
I agree with the way Obama did it for low level drug crimes. Just a blanket pardon for everyone meeting some criteria.

Yep and I know its implied in your comment but it really shits on our already fucked legal/criminal justice system + it doesn't consider the impact to victims of the crimes

I am not sure how to explain it, but these pardons still fit into what I think is Trumps racist image of black people.
Like in Trump's mind, these hoods are representative of his image of black people so if he is going to pardon black people, these are the ones he will pardon.
Like no way would it be the many black panther type activist still in jail like Ed Poindexter.

Just a flurry of bullet points without much context that leaves the reader still thinking "convict's a convict, not much to be done" without doing any legwork to put these men's lives in proper perspective.

I think about how you can hire someone to lobby on your behalf to get you a pardon and pay that person 1M. Then that person can turn around and donate 750K to a Presidential PAC and ask the president to give a pardon, and its all perfectly legal.

I don't know that I've seen a more evil set of pardons in my lifetime.
Lil Wayne, Harry O, Kodak, are all kind of whatever to me. But there was some real life evils that were excused on behalf of American imperialism. It's literally one of the most unforgivable things of the entire Trump administration, but it barely registers in the public consciousness.
