"Georgia Senate runoff "

Both seats needed for Democrat control of the senate. The difference between functioning government and complete gridlock.

What are your predictions? Polls (for what they're worth) have it real close. I've been reading that Abrams and them have been doing a good job turning people out, while Republicans are tearing each other apart.

The stock market is way down today. Some are attributing that to sentiment that both Democrats will win since stability and gridlock is valued by the market.

Personally, I'm optimistic. In normal circumstances, I'd say the Republicans win since the turnout for any and every election. But it feels like they don't have the same motivation that they usually do.

but thats the optimism in me

reality actually thinks GA does what GA does...

maybe Trump and his tweets and the $600 fiasco are enough to push us over the finish line.

I early voted a couple weeks ago.

Tomorrow....I really hope for the best. Skeptical of course but the fact that the presidential election went blue gives me hope

Kamala was in my hometown yesterday with DNice. They hit August today and will be here in Atlanta tomorrow. We've had all type of drive in concerts and shit. The effort is there for sure....I just hope there's no BS at the polls

Why? The voter suppression has been kicked up into super high gear.

And Republicans VOTE because they know it matters.

While non Republicans will stay away thing "Does it really matter?"

Trump has single handedly changed the idea that Democrats dont care or certain people wont show up. Early voting for the run off is already light years ahead of past voting after a general election.

Not to mention I live directly adjacent to a concert venue with a large parking lot where they've been having rallies and concerts outside.

I never made early voting so I'll let yall know what the lines look like tomorrow.

Early voting numbers are interesting: https://electproject.github.io/Early-Vote-2020G/GA_RO.html

118,000 voters that didn't participate in the general. I don't know if those were ambivalent democrats or ambivalent republicans lol.

turnout is up among black voters (especially in black rural areas) and in the traditional dem strongholds like metro/suburban atl,

turnout is depressed in red rural areas...including where trump is campaigning today.

even pro repub/trump pollster trafalgar has both repubs losing by a slim margin.
https://twitter.com/RobertCahaly/status/1343965974568034306

im cautiously optimistic at this point. its possible republicans are gonna be confronted with the fact that their base isnt as motivated without trump on the ticket.

one underdiscussed fact about georgia elections is that dems are participating more in mail/early voting and ga replaced untraceable touchscreen voting machines with those requiring a paper backup. both things make it harder to fudge the numbers and steal elections.

not to mention abrams most likely won georgia in 2018 without massive voter suppression (and her opponent running his own election).

the one thing that gives me a lil faith in ga (especially going into the future) is that the state party and abrams have have found ways to successfully localize even national elections (something dem parties in states like fl and oh have consistently failed to do).

or drive in rural areas and get the “aww shit, we in Klan land” and then see nothing but Black faces on porches

in the North these are 99.9% white folk in rural areas

but in the south? Its like 60/40 Black in most rural areas.

he has done nothing but exemplify weakness in his current position.

give it to somebody like dick durbin. safe blue seat. non polarizing. not beholden to the 2 big coastal metro political universes.

basically he can do everything schumer would functionally do in the role without making people hate him.

he doesnt look like an embecile reading speeches on the senate floor with his glasses on the tip of his nose either.

edit: down side is hes older than schumer

we really need to get schumer out of there tho and i cant think of anyone else that would be a shoe in to unify the caucus if chuck stepped down.

Put her in charge of distributing the Covid vaccine, rename an old confederate military base after her just to further piss off people in Georgia, give her a Presidential Medal of Freedom, have her do the coin toss at the Super Bowl.

the 'progressive religious left'.

huh? thats some white academic categorization that only some detached member of the dc cocktail class could let fly out their mouth.

its the black church.

the same people that were shit on for not being sufficiently progressive because they came out heavily for biden in the primary...are now apparently the ethnically generic 'progressive religious left' garnering the credit for putting georgias 1st black senator in office.

With Manchin around, this isn't going to be a "progressive" or liberal senate, but that doesn't mean they can't pass some decent legislation.

IF nothing else, Biden appointments get through. They can finally pass another voting rights act. They can can pass some meaningful COVID-related stimulus. They're not going to be able overhaul health care reform (there won't be single payer), but I figure they can improve the ACA. They can probably do some environmental reform. Some tax reform (certainly increase the taxes on the super rich). Immigration reform probably won't happen, but I don't think they're going to be kids in cages. I think police reform on the federal level isn't going to happen.

So, I'm cautiously optimistic for the next two years. Try to get as much done as possible while you full control.

these arent sexy but they matter.

reverse every trump executive order.
kill every last minute trump administrative/agency rule change (congressional review act only requires a majority).
confirm all biden govt appointments.
confirm all biden judges.
reverse trump tax cuts (budget reconciliation process via simple majority).
pass voting rights reform (budget reconciliation again).
launch meaningful investigations in *both* chambers.

and maybe most importantly (at least immediately) take control of the covid mitigation effort.

and they can at least put legislation on the floor and force repubs to make their votes known (mcconnell protected his members by not making them take a public stance).

All because of a Mississippi born woman named Stacey Abrams who beat the shyt out of a classmate when they were debating about Reagan and his effed up policies against the poor.

If anything I learned from reading books/articles, listening to podcast and watching documentaries about her, is that when you're defeated- you can either walk away frustrated or change the game.

it goes into detail how she got into politics and she mentions the fight w/ her classmate.

after losing her governorship to Kemp, the democratic party pushed her to run for Senate, and she said no instead wanted to focus on voter suppression/intimidation/rolls and surprisingly the democrat party told her she was wasting her time trying to convince voters, particularly black voters who dont vote consistently and or ignorant about the voting process. she said that's not fair to think of black voters in that light by a party who takes advantage of them.
honestly, the democrat party is afraid of her and what she intends to do to them in the near future.

Even last night I didn't feel the sense of dread like I felt in November. Yea I complained about the ads but man the people on the ground put in WORK. Texts, phone calls, knocking on doors, post cards, fliers. I know shit won't change overnight and Warnock's seat will be up again in 2022 but I really never thought I'd see GA like this....not this soon anyway

Anyway, I'd like to share some data points to shut them up and hear from people on the ground about the Black Church's role in this win.
