"Ecstacy RIP"

https://www.revolt.tv/news/2020/12/23/22197625/john-ecstasy-fletcher-passes-away

John Fletcher, better known as Ecstasy from the rap group Whodini, has reportedly passed away. Questlove broke the news on Wednesday (Dec. 23) in an Instagram tribute to the hip hop legend.

“One love to Ecstasy of the legendary #Whodini,” he said. “This man was legendary and a pivotal member of one of the most legendary groups in hip hop. This is sad man.”

Ecstasy, born on June 7, 1964, formed Whodini with Jalil Hutchins in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1982. DJ Grandmaster Dee later joined the group in 1986.

Together, they went on to record hit singles, “The Haunted House of Rock,” “Friends,” “Freaks Come Out at Night,” becoming a vital name in the hip hop scene.

Hip hop’s political evolution and the road ahead

Shyne, Barack Obama, Uncle Luke

In 2018, Whodini got their flowers at the 3rd Annual Black Music Honors where they were honored with the Hip Hop Icon Award and a tribute from fellow icons Doug E. Fresh, Yo-Yo and Monie Love who took the stage to perform their classic hits.

Following the news of Ecstasy’s death, Jermaine Dupri penned a heartfelt caption to the hip hop icon. “My God, this one hurts me so bad, I can’t even believe I’m posting this,” he said. “Ex, you know I love you. Thank you for every word, every conversation, every good time. May your soul rest in power.”

Loni Love — a fan of Whodini — also paid homage to the late star. “Just got the sad news, Ecstasy of #Whodini passed away today. Thank you for the music of my youth.. I always loved

the Zorro hat!!! Condolences to his family.”

REVOLT sends our prayers to Ecstasy’s loved ones during this tough time.

Through the vision of Russell Simmons and Rick Rubin
LL, Run DMC, Disco Three(fat boys), Whodini....

They bridged the old school (Kurtis Blow, sugar hill, grand master flash and the furious 5,etc) to the golden era ( krs, rakim, etc). They started the transition.

They are the ones who gave hip hop its style, help to push it out of New York and to go global, brought in the ill videos and tours.

LL( kangol,troop)
Run DMC ( leather blazers, no shoe string adidas)
Disco 3 ( starter jackets and raccoon hats)
Whodini ( Zorro hats and leather sweaters...)

Without them, hip hop artists would still be dressing like Earth Wind and Fire and the village people ..lol

RIP to the innovator. ...One love,One life

I think my brother bought the album that had "Funky beat"

then around '89 or '90 I was in a record store on 125th st in Harlem and I saw the "Escape" lp and I said "let me just buy this" (even though it was several years old by then). I still have that album.

They really did their thing.

I remember reading how they went overseas to perfect their stage show and polish their sound.

They had the perfect blend of funk, snyth pop, R&B.

Never knew Dupri was a backup dancer for them at 12 years old.
