"Russia has successfully hacked the U.S. Government"
Mon Dec-21-20 01:28 AM by Damali

there can NEVER EVER be any doubt ever again that Trump/Kushner/Manafort/Flynn et al were Assets for the Kremlin. LIKE NONE

there are multiple articles about the hack...

The Guardian: US scrambling to understand fallout of suspected Russia hack
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2020/dec/18/us-russia-hack-cyber-attack-federal-agencies-congress

NPR: What We Know About Russia's Alleged Hack Of The U.S. Government And Tech Companies
https://www.npr.org/2020/12/15/946776718/u-s-scrambles-to-understand-major-computer-hack-but-says-little

CNBC:Suspected Russian hack is much worse than first feared: Here’s what you need to know
https://www.cnbc.com/2020/12/18/suspected-russian-hack-on-us-is-much-worse-than-first-feared.html

THIS is why Putin needed Trump to undermine all levels of government by appointing acting department heads and rampant understaffing...they've been accessing shit for up to NINE MONTHS....for the entire time the Trump admin has been purposely bungling the virus mitigation...the multiple phone calls to Putin...jesus.. There has never been a breach like this...you're dying of fucking cancer post haste if you've had it for 9 months before being diagnosed

this is bad. mainly because we still don't yet know Putin's endgame.

Modern warfare is cyber warfare..make no mistake, this is war. The entire Trump presidency has been a 4 year long terrorist attack.

like joe bidens deputy chief of staff using a naughty word and jill biden not being an actual medical doctor.

seriously our media is severely broken.

we have the biggest govt hack in history (including the agency that manages our nuclear stockpile) and the president openly considering a declaration of martial law to subvert a democratic election...and the media chooses to report breathlessly about bullshit that has zero tangible effect on anyones life.

which is very very different than "hacking the US Government".
And there's plenty of doubt about who exactly did it, in the articles you shared.

from one of the articles above:

"The hackers attached their malware to a software update from SolarWinds, a company based in Austin, Texas. Many federal agencies and thousands of companies worldwide use SolarWinds' Orion software to monitor their computer networks.

SolarWinds says that nearly 18,000 of its customers — in the government and the private sector — received the tainted software update from March to June of this year."

So saying the "government got hacked by russia" is pretty sensationalist.

This *should be* seen as a massive disaster for SolarWinds and it's security, or as a critique of gov't reliance on 3rd party vendors for critical infrastructure and not as another brick in the ridiculous 21st Cold War the media keeps trying to peddle.

Plus, none of the articles can conclusively say why/how Russian govt are the leading suspects.

are 2 different things.

thousands had the vulnerability. but only some were specifically targeted to have their information extracted using that vulnerability.

if millions of windows users have malware on their system due to a security hole they didnt patch with an update...they havent been hacked. but if some of them have their files accessed via that security hole...they got hacked.

So far, they targeted FireEye (who noticed the attack), MS and several US agencies.

This was a fairly sophisticated attack, they got into Solar Winds' DevOps and compromised their build process. And they did a good job of making sure that the corrupted SW Orion patch wasn't too noisy.

And while attribution can be tricky, there's not a lot of bad actors out there with this level of skill and who could've dodged detection for this long. FireEye/Mandiant is who folks bring in when they've been breached...and the bad actors were in their systems (and lifted some red team tools) for a minute.

Espionage didn't go away with the Cold War...

And yeah, if a single company has a virtual monopoly on such a crucial service in the US...then hacking that company's software will be pretty effective.

The size of the breach is still being unpacked, so to say that only MS and the government has been targeted is not accurate.

If anyone else (important) was popped, they would have said something by now. It's possible that large research universities could be using Solar Winds' Orion, so it'll be interesting to see if any information comes from that sector.

Which is why I said those ever so important words, "so far". (Not that I said only MS and the government were targeted.

way more.

This is apparently from the WSJs own independent research:

https://www.wsj.com/articles/solarwinds-hack-victims-from-tech-companies-to-a-hospital-and-university-11608548402

"The Journal identified infected computers at two dozen organizations that installed tainted network monitoring software called SolarWinds Orion that allowed the hackers in via a covertly inserted backdoor. It gave them potential access to much sensitive corporate and personal data.

Among them: technology giant Cisco Systems Inc., chip makers Intel Corp. and Nvidia Corp. , accounting firm Deloitte LLP, cloud-computing software maker VMware Inc. and Belkin International Inc., which sells home and office Wi-Fi routers and networking gear under the LinkSys and Belkin brands. The attackers also had access to the California Department of State Hospitals and Kent State University."

So yes, they can tell if someone is infected, but just because folks are phoning home doesn't mean that there is/was interest in them.

Once FireEye blew the whistle on the campaign, it would be foolish for anyone to continue whatever they were doing.

We probably won't hear directly anything on the Fed side...but anyone else who saw their systems rummaged through will most likely say something...especially publicly traded companies. They have to disclose stuff like this (FireEye immediately released an 8-K).

the official story is that several state/county voter databases, political org repositories, and machine vendor networks were breached by arguably the most sophisticated/dedicated foreign intelligence hackers in the world...and they just window shopped and went home?

the ga state election system data was kept in some room at kennesaw state and accessed remotely via basic url (while various administration credentials were stored in plain text on the server) by some part time security analyst in the states. and the disk image given to the fbi had event logs that only went back to 2 days *after* trump was elected.

but russia didnt take advantage of bush league security like this that they could have easily had a field day with?

Literally the first sentence of the CNBC article

"The scale of a sophisticated cyberattack on the U.S. government that was unearthed this week is much bigger than first anticipated. "

The first paragraph of the NPR article

"A massive computer breach allowed hackers to spend months exploring numerous U.S. government networks and private companies' systems around the world. Industry experts say a country mounted the complex hack — and government officials say Russia is responsible."

I don't think you read anything.

Do you have any other sources?

isn't that a bit abstract for your average Joe Black in America working a 9-5?

I gotta worry about police, prison, my kids' (mis)education, taxes, mortgage, student loans, Tyler Perry movie hairpieces, etc...

I'm all for having a global mindset, but a Russian intel hack just isn't really scratching my top 10.

You win, again.

But, this is supposed to be a message board and exchange of ideas, and you made a post, so your sudden ambivalence towards people using words to discuss things is a bit confusing.

And you ain't gotta explain shit to me. You don't have the capacity anyway. And that "white" shit don't bother me either. My blackness credentials are unquestionable, and THAT you can trust.

I get that Russia is attempting to exploit already existing racial divisions in America, but that's like 20 levels removed from common black issues, and, further, it can only be effective because we have (and have always had) anti-black racism right here.

Rayshard Brooks died at the Wendy's in walking distance from my house in ATL. Russia didn't do that. So, yeah, Black America is a different country and we got completely different wars to fight.

Every aspect of the country from the people to the ethos to the actual land mass has been changed and has changed others

I don't disagree with America being an overall shitty place in the current, nor do I disagree with it being historically shitty from its foundings

But the specific ways in which it is shitty matter and at current, it has been decoupling itself from the shittiness of exploitative global capitalism and lurching hard towards rigid global white nationalism ... even above its own financial interests.

That's new.

In a post about how the United States government was infiltrated by a foreign adversary for 9 months undetected.

And what the ramifications for that could mean for the Americans that live in this country, including the Black ones.

Your position is that it doesn't affect our lives all that much because historically white individuals have been shitty and will continue to.

And that individuals such as Garrett Rolfe and Devin Brosnan, despite being literally employees of "the State", are so connected to the normality of shitty whiteness that their actions exist outside of any greater context than just being normally shitty white Americans?

Also I'm from and of Texas, so you can save the "yall shook" vibe.

I'd only add that Foundational Black Americans have no foreign adversaries. We export nothing other than culture, so a foreign nation would have no need to be adversarial with us unless they hate dancing.

As members of the diaspora we have adversaries, sure. I'd argue that the country we live in and pay taxes to is at the top of that list. We got Nelson Mandela locked up (who was supported by Russia), we killed Patrice Lumumba (who was supported by Russia), and we forced Castro into the arms of the Russians.

So, yeah, Russia don't scare me.

When it's actually the mechanisms of the State that affect our day to day lives more on both a macro and micro scale.

And if those mechanisms divorce themselves from the traditional "everyone gets shat on, Black people get shat on worse" to what it's explicitly been for the last four years which is "non white people get shat on directly and harshly by the State." then our Black lives are measurably affected by these outcomes.

You see it with COVID, the relief bill, student loan debt, food quality, the destruction of HUD, environmental safety, the removal of consent decrees, land grabs ... etc. I can go on.

Joe and Bill down the street may or may not decide to shoot me tomorrow, it's whatever.

But the food that I eat needs to go through quality FDA inspection, my job needs to have COVID protection policies, the air I breathe needs to be free of pollutants, the roads that I drive on need to be safe ... and so on. The government has a hand in nearly every aspect of our lives ... Black lives at that. And it's a child like myopia that allows one to ignore what a government based on explicit white nationalism is doing to a Black life.

cyber attacks...scare the shit out of me because we're on the bleeding edge of understanding how much destruction can be done. given the rapid evolution of technology, I couldn't begin to tell you what's possible today.

Remember...

Stuxnet the worm that sabotaged Iranian uranium enrichment by making their centrifuges and other industrial machinery physically self destruct.

That was in 2010 and it was originally developed as far back as 2005.

it's 2020 right? Stuxnet was ten years ago with development taking place five years before that.

I cannot imagine what is within the realm of possibility in today's world.

this shit IS indeed scary.

We have ethical hackers and lets just say we were able to gain access to a county jail and unlocked the doors to the jail... from our office.

and the real scary part is cyber security wasn’t even mentioned during the election cycle. When Target gets hacked heads roll, they get fined a few mill and have to change all their shit up to make customers feel like they care..

but government? people just shrug like its normal.

it sorta reminds me of steroids in sports. someone in baseball gets caught and the media acts like it ruined the game, banning players from Cooperstown and shit..

but in football if someone gets caught using roids people shrug like its normal.

People getting fired is just a PR stunt for the shareholders. No one is getting fired at a non publicly traded company, unless there was gross negligence, over a breach. They happen all the time.

No one is getting fired because they failed a pentest. Hell, I've never met a pentester who couldn't get into an organization one way or the other. The point of the pentest is to find the vulnerabilities and fix them.

Companies get fined if they let regulated data get breached Target...cardholder data...they got fined from the PCI folks. Marriott...EU citizens got their GDPR regulated data disclosed...that's where their fine came from there.

Just because you aren't privy to what people actually do doesn't mean things aren't being done to remedy issues.

was that no one is doing anything substantive or being punished after a security breach.

"but government? people just shrug like its normal." <- That's you.

The example of the pentestesrs who were able to remotely open a jail door at a jail (that would be part of the government) were conducting a pentest. It's part of government trying to ensure their systems are secure..

But if you want to now say that you were just talking about how scary it all is.

Nothing scary about it, at least not the example you used, becuase you're talking about a pentest. When a pentest is conducted, the pentesters are often given a lot of information about the systems or given special access to the system that ordinary folks wouldn't know or have. I can guarantee that whatever access system the jail is using is also being used by plenty other jail systems across the nation. Let me google and see the rampant epidemic of jails having their prison doors remotely opened. On second thought, I'm pretty sure that number is close to zero.

>I just gave an example of how scary shit can be because we

You're in marketing..."we" didn't find anything. You know how many times I loop my marketing team in on an engagement I'm involved in? Zero. Unless I need a fancy template for my report.

>so imagine what hackers can do?

This is because you don't understand cyber. When I have pentests conducted at my gig, for example, I can (usually) see ever damn move that they make...certainly on the systems that I deem critical (if we ran a prison/jail...the lock system would certainly be deemed critical). If I wanted to stop the pentesters...I could. But that isn't the point of the pentest.

>but you chose that as an example of a cyber attack

no no...a pentest. I've never characterized it as any thing other than that. I know you don't understand the distinction though.

Your company got in the jail, because the jail needed you all to get in and kick the tires. If a real attacker tried to do the same stunt...it would've got blocked. And that is what *you're* missing, because you don't know what you're talking about. Hence, why you don't see a bunch of "inmates were released from their cells when a hacker got into the door system" on the evening news every night. If it were easy to do, folks would be doing it.

>you go it tho, clearly you are the expert.

Not an expert, but pretty damn knowledgeable and a buttload of credentials to back it up.

and while it's true that a lot of companies used this tool, it doesn't mean that whoever did this was interested in all of them. We have a good idea of who was considered "interesting".

We don't 100% know if this an OPM type of breach (espionage/data exfiltration) or an NSA type of breach (which lead to a new type of ransomware flooding the streets). But, it's leaning to be more of an OPM style breach (even though the attackers did lift some tools from one of the "interesting" companies.)

If it is an OPM type breach and you aren't working at one of those interesting companies, it's just another day. If you do work at one of those interesting companies, they'd let you know something if there was something you needed to know...would probably be an IT concern (yeah, we got hit, now how do we get these mofos out without burning everything to the ground and starting over from scratch)

If it's a NSA type breach...we'll all find out soon enough...

as a result, at least 20K of it'e enterprise users (*including* state & federal govt clients, and 450 of the Fortune 500) have had their data made insecure since March.
The software is so ubiquitous in America that's its gonna take a while to even figure out who all got hit.

Just assume none of your personal information is secure.
Like we've been told to assume since the last major data breach, lol.
Probably a great time to challenge everything on your credit report. AGAIN, lol

A REAL discussion that should be had is the wisdom of the govt using private, popular enterprise level software to manage its networks. America got real infrastructure problems that only get worse thru privatization

As many people have pointed this out to you already, just because a piece of vulnerable software is installed on your system, doesn't automatically mean that it's game over for you. Everyone is using hardware or software that has at least one vulnerability in it, probably more than one. chillax. And we do have an idea of who has been hit(because we can see who has been making DNS requests). There is a known upper bound. It isn't 20k.

Even if the government did make its own processors (because there are hardware vulnerabilities - Intel's Meltdown/Spectre is just one that comes to mind), data centers, switches, routers, OSes, software applications, HVAC, ICS, etc, etc what makes you think that they would be any more secure than what's already out there?

And even if the Feds did make a super secure infrastructure where they controlled everything top to bottom, what would happen when anyone needed to interact with the Feds? Granted there are CUI standards when entering into contracts with the DoD. But those security controls are not a walk in the park to implement. It would be a shitshow, for example, if everyone were required to follow those standards to do something as menial as electronically filing with the IRS.

The Feds do ban problematic vendors...it's about 200k of them you can't have running in your environment if you want do business with them. Huawei and ZTE are recent additions.

By definition, makes your data insecure.

Didn't say anything about "game over".

I'm the one that says it's absurd to go THE RUSSIANS ARE HACKING THE US OMG!!!!! over something that is affecting damn near the entire fortune 500 AND some government agencies. We aren't even close to even fully assessing the scale of this, let alone solved how it happened. We don't know if it was a government org, or just a group of hackers trying to monetize the data.

So no we absolutely do not know the scope of the problem, because of the nature of the threat, and the usage of Orion.

Also, you don't think this will lead to a discussion about how government IT infrastructure is regulated and implemented?
REALLY?
Ok bruh.

>By definition, makes your data insecure.

...and since all systems have vulnerabilities, this would mean that all data is insecure. Not that I disagree, but it doesn't mean anything in the context of saying the SW Orion backdoor made the data insecure. If the data was sitting unprotected on a Windows box, which of course has vulnerabilities, it was already insecure. I could go on and on...but it isn't about insecure systems. It's about whether or not anyone exploited the vulnerabilities on those systems.

Now certainly, vulnerabilities should be patched as soon as they are tested and can be rolled out, but that's been an ongoing cycle...a bad Orion didn't start that party...and it won't be the end.

>I'm the one that says it's absurd to go THE RUSSIANS ARE
>HACKING THE US OMG!!!!!

...yet in this very same post, you link up an article talking about the Russians hacking the US. Excerpt from YOUR link - "...because there's really only one story: how Russia pulled off the biggest espionage hack on record."

>REALLY?
>Ok bruh.

You mean like the one everyone had after the U.S. Office of Personnel Management breach or the NSA breach? Can you remind me how Federal IT was {insert whatever it is you think is going to happen here} after those fairly recent breaches...I don't seem to recall anything being done.

It's an article you posted dum dum. If you don't believe the shit in an article YOU posted, then why should I? You couldn't find an article that didn't implicate the Russians? I wonder why that is?

I'd have to quote something from a display ad YOU linked to, to make your line make any sense...so the question would become why did you link up a display ad? Which, at this point, I wouldn't put it past you.

Facebook/Twitter is a different discussion. Has diddly to do with this hack. Now, if SolarWinds is found to have been too lax with their DevOps and they can't demonstrate an ability to straighten up, that's not going to be a new discussion that needs to be had. There is already a process to put folks on the Fed procurement naughty list (this would cover IT procurement as well). And that list, particularly the GSA's prohibited vendors list, is pretty long. So...again...I don't know what you're expecting to have happen that isn't already happening.
