"Confess your Hip Hop sins here. "

This is a sanctuary, a place to seek and receive absolution.

You can keep the fitteds, tees, AF1's and chucks, but check your weapons at the door.

I'll start.

I confess the sin of never quite being all in on Only Built For Cuban Linx.

I never really gave it much play. I've given it a few listens, thought, "this is cool". But it never got a spot in the rotation like Liquid Swords, Iron Man, or Supreme Clientele. I gave The Pillage more tick- and no diss to Pillage, because I fucking love that album.

I gave OB4CL2 more tick.

In repentance, I'm listening to it, from start to finish.

I beg forgiveness and absolution.

Please, come hither, and confess your own sins.

We're all in this together now (c)

He’s good, really good.. but i just never liked his voice all that much. Its wild because I love most of his hits and videos but I never had a desire to listen to a whole album.

Blame it on my East Coast back packer phase.

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*

I like a few tracks on 2Pacalypse Now and Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z., and that is IT.

Some of it is East Coast backpacker bias, like you said, but a lot of it was a real distaste with his whole gangsta schtick. It never felt authentic to me, and his music felt really redundant. I get it...you gotta be hard out here to survive...now give me something else.

I have no music with Tupac on it, and never will.

i think he played Bishop in Juice and never let go of the character.

and him going at Biggie was some sucka shit. he knew who got at him and he ain't want it with them. so he chose the path of least resistance.

I was always middle of the road on Pac. He was fine but folks hyped him up a little too much for me.

Like JFrost says, the best cuts on "All Eyez On Me" make up a solid album. And the Makaveli album is one of my all time favorites.

So my enjoyment of Tupac is tempered.

I've never made myself sit thru an entire album by Tupac/2Pac ever, but it's a lot of albums I've never listened to from beginning to end without skipping a song or two; Tupac basically bores me, he's a one trick pony vocally and his songs or content contradict themselves too much when listening but people seem to like his so-called wisdom in these songs.

I've never understood his calling women bitches & hoes, but then rap on some uplift & praise black women & etc.; c'mon mane, pick a lane.

I just call it like it is.

I love Westside Gunn's whole steez OUTSIDE of rap. But he's unlistenable after 10 minutes.

Benny has the verse of the year IMO on Russ' EP.

Also, for anyone reading, The Black Soprano Family's "The Respected Sopranos" mixtape that Benny and DJ Drama did is one of the most slept on rap releases this year.

I probably doesn't help that he's pretty weak lyrically. I do wonder how he settled on such a high pitched emcee voice though because he has a pretty normal voice when he speaks.

I'm just sort of overall "meh" about Wu Tang in general, musically.

A lot of it is just because there's so much music, so many artists to follow, that it's too daunting to keep up with.

But it's also because outside of 36 Chambers and Forever, I find most of their albums to be hit or miss. Including most of their solos.

Sorry.

overall my feeling is i dont get the hype. theyre good, really good but the way people hype them up? i dont quite get it.

i almost feel like i must have not listened to the albums because i dont have that same type of love for them as most seem to have. i recently started playing all my music on shuffle thats on my phone and songs from ghost albums and raekwon albums keep coming up. i like them but i also dont remember hearing them before. yet theyre on my phone and any song thats on it i have listened to before.

for all the universal love they get i figured they should be up there with tribe and de la for me but theyre not quite there.

Not a player is the only real commercial track on there. Give it a listen, you might be surprsed.

I can see people not liking the Wyclef joint and I supposed if you’re the type completely against R&B mixed in then Punish Me may get some frowns although I love that joint.

But other than that?

Beware
Super Lyrical
Dream Shatterer
You’re Not A Killer
Glamour Life
Capital Punishment
I’m Not A Player (always preferred this joint)
Twinz
Boomerang
You Came Up
Tres Lenches (best joint to me)

Those songs are ALL dope.

Always thought the last two songs were a little weak bit that may be because the album is too long.

But shit...put those 11 with Punish Me and the Intro and you have some flawless shit when cutting the terrible skits and a fewer weaker songs. Always said 13 was the perfect number of tracks!

In response to Reply # 39

I thought I might have heard it before but after giving it a listen I don't think I had. It does have some songs I have heard before and that I like. As a whole I did not enjoy it. I appreciate LL and all he has done but I don't think I really enjoy listening to him rap except for a handful of songs.

There were a good 4/5 songs I was tempted to skip. I would keep I Can't Live Without My Radio, I Can Give You More (first time I heard this I think, and Rock the Bells.

I can appreciate and recognize that the album was important for Hip Hop but I don't think it's a must listen.

I've been wanting to listen to this. All the talk of Schoolly being the start of gangsta rap had me intrigued. I can see it. It was an interesting listen. Not really something I see myself coming back to but definitely happy I finally gave it a listen.

Not sure why I thought I had not heard this. That said, it's not on Youtube music. I found a zip and listening to it some songs have some big differences vs the ones I'm used to hearing. Now I'm wondering which one is the official one.

Either way, yeah this one is dope. Nobody beats the Biz. I hope he gets well soon.

I like this. I don't think it's overall as good as Strictly Business but it is pretty great. Sonically it's a bit dated but the rapping? Wow, definitely deserves all the praise it gets. Not sure I would say it's a must listen for everyone but definitely for rap heads, particularly lyrics/rapping focused ones.

I think I will need to give this another spin. Kind of too much going on to be able to feel confident on how I feel about it.

A weird blend of older stuff, current stuff (at the time) and some sounds that got popular later. I think this is an album that you had to be there for to truly appreciate it. To hear it for the first time now I feel I have too much context for it?

Overall I didn't enjoy it but it might be because I had a bit too much going on while I was listening.

Okay, yeah the production on this is awesome. It kind of reminds me of 3 ft high and dead but with a twist. Kind of sounds like buhloone built off this as well. The rapping is fine, not the best but definitely not bad.

What's the deal with the title "Just a Friendly Game of Baseball (For Our Friends in a Tribe Called Quest)"? It shows like that on the remix on Youtube Music. It's the 2017 remastered version. I only see Remix on track listings online. Was it like that in the original too or was it done for the 2017 version? If its only the 2017 version I would imagine it is a shout out but my first instinct was that it was a shot at them. Wouldn't know why. I'm guessing its just a shout out.

In response to Reply # 0

I realize many of them are considered stone cold classics.

But for me, I fell in love w/ the Wu as a group. I didn't really care for most of the solo projects. I also thought, probably because RZA was stretched thin trying to do everything for everyone, that the production on any particular Wu solo album wasn't that great (i do realize there were other producers).

Funny enough, I also listened to The Pillage way more than OB4CL. Shit, probably more than ANY solo Wu album outside of Tical.

In fact, I don't think I've listened to any Wu solo album front to back EXCEPT for Tical...TO THIS DAY!

Also like Legs, I haven't listened to a whole 2Pac album front to back but I do love all of 2Pac's big songs (and a few album/deep cuts).

i just didn't love the whole ALBUM that those songs are a part of. i don't know why. like i said, i just assume it's because i loved 36 Chambers so much (it's top 5 all time to me) and how they all rapped together that something for me was missing when it was solo (or mostly solo).

probably won't ever listen to one

i consider myself to be well-versed in most regions and eras of hip hop but i have huge gaps in my knowledge when it comes to non-dj screw houston rap and late 80's and late 00's rap as a whole

my biggest "sin" is a disinterest in consistently revisiting and enjoying music that i loved when i was younger. i'll occasionally dip in and check out an old favorite album or song but i'm far more interested in new artists. in my mind music is supposed to evolve and grow. i think this is a result of my constant interaction with the UK electronic scene that went from ragga to dubstep, shifting drum patterns, tempi, and sound banks every few years. being stuck in the past due to nostalgic reasons or out of stubbornness doesn't work for me but i understand why other folks do it

i'm also guilty of hipster syndrome where i will be really into an artist well before they blow up then drop them like dead weight once they hit a certain threshold of popularity. this happened to me with run the jewels and migos recently. i do always love that they achieve the fame and success that they clearly deserve but the music itself tends to suffer due to the artist's perception of expectations of a larger audience. i have managed to stick by young thug but he's at right at the edge of being dropped because he's becoming predictable

At one point I thought the shit on Rawkus was some of the illest shit ever. And “Renegade” is probably the closest I will get to reciting an Em record line for line. But even that has worn thin. And his later stuff is unlistenable.

There was never a time that someone was blasting Em out of their car .
He has some good records music wise, but his lyrics are just too deranged where they don’t relate to hip hop.

still haven't gone back to most of his earlier albums.

intially, I hated the 'country' voices of big boi and 3k. I heard that first album at my boy's crib and decided it wasn't for me. I'm from the A, lol. then I tried it again and the beats grabbed me and I've been hooked on Kast sense.

I actually like Eminem. he be spitting. sure he got a bunch of wack as stadium songs, but that mf be rhyming.

Curious, was that 'country' opinion a thing in Atlanta when they first dropped? I started listening at Aqeumini then went backwards and of course Rosa Parks was it's own lane with the harmonica and shit, but in ATLANTA....were people like 'these niggas too country'? lmao

nah, it was me. the rest of the city was on board. they sounded different than all other Atl hip-hop and I just had to give it a shot.

before they came out, I was working at footlocker in Lenox. somebody from the organized camp came into the store and asked if I wanted to be in the Players Ball video. I said when. he said tonight. my dumb ass turned it down. I had just gotten a 2nd job in the mall that was the same night as the shoot.

I still haven't listened to a full Jay Z album or Kayne. I feel like I've heard enough of both of them from their singles/hits.

as excited as i was to have his catalog back on Spotify, after about 2 weeks i realized i didn't miss not hearing Hov at all.

and that in being away from his music for 2-3 years, i grew to love some other folks more (Pac, Nas, Houston rap in general) that i didnt fw as much when i had Hov's catalog readily available.

I've listened and loved hip hop since the 80s, and thought I had impeccable taste in high school. But my friend would lend me stuff like BCC, and Wu solos, and other boom bap classics and I thought "How do I tell him he likes meh rap?"

Cut to a decade later and I realize almost everything he tried to put me on to was amazing and are now among my favorite rap albums ever.

Also, I think PM Dawn is GREAT on almost every level. Not that that's a sin. I just fume a little when people treat them as a punchline.

I will acknowledge that it had no socially redeeming value, the beats were simplistic, and the lyrics were awful...

But DAMN that music got the party started!

Bass is the music of my college years. ATL hood clubs like The Phoenix and 559, yeek dancing, strip clubs, Freaknik...etc.

No one will ever consider Kilo Ali, Shy-D, and DJ Kizzy Rock to be hip Hop greats. But put some of that shit on...

Several of my frat bros (GSU Alphas) would try to drag me out to Atlanta Nights and 112, but that wasn't my style. I hated to get dressed up, and I wanted to really party versus just trying to see and be seen. I was strictly college parties, The Phoenix and occasionally 559.

I truly found my lane when spots started happening like Yin-Yang, Kaya, King Plow (Funkjazz Kafe)...etc.

...it still pains me to say that I don't really feel "Daily Operation" and "The Infamous" that much. I haven't been into Daily Operation from the beginning, and I've enjoyed The Infamous less as the years have gone by. Neither are bad albums, but I strongly disagree when anyone says either are their best.

I also feel like "Southernplayalistic" and "Enta Da Stage" aren't dope as many say. Both sound like first drafts to me. "Southerplayalistic" is the fourth best Outkast album.

My love for Southern is mostly sentimental.

It is a great album but I can see his stance thinking it’s just a hint of where they were going.

I have it at 3 above Stankonia but I’m not mad at people who have them flipped.

Well said re: "first draft"

I just said in another post that I feel like it was mimicking the west coast sound while still putting an OutKast spin on it. It's really good and I love it, but it's 4th best in their catalogue IMO as well.

I think Southernplayalistic is a better album head-to-head, but I liken it to Common's first album, in that they are both good albums that show flashes of the brilliance we saw later from both artists but are not quite at the level we came to expect from either.

I can understand the criticism of it sounding quite dated, especially with some of the slang Buckshot used on the album, but I don't get how the album has the feeling of being a first draft. I mainly say this because of how stellar the Beatminerz production is on there.

I'm guessing you view Da Shinin as a much superior album compared to Enta Da Stage.

The ability to accept that NWO is in fact a great album, is a sign that you're a mature, reasonable hip hop head, unencumbered by the expectations of the hip hop pharisees.

No absolution necessary.

That's not to say I wasn't a fan, but he had alotta joints with basslines like "Find A Way" by Tribe. Can't think of one that I rocked with. Even "Funky For You" had all the funk sucked out of it by its own bassline for me. Those kinds of basslines frustrate the fuck outta me.

The joints of his that I like, I REALLY like. Stuff like "Won't Do", "So Far To Go", "Workinonit", "Two Can Win", etc.

I didn't really like his "Dilla" output.

The Jay Dee era was my shit though. Doonit is an all-time GOAT level beat. IMO that shit was his zenith, the joint that embodied the absolute pinnacle of his sound and style.

I like Donuts, but more for his sentimental value. His death was fucking painful. I revered him. But Donuts speaks to me from that sentimental place, where as the shit he did on LWFC and FV2 were transformative for me personally.

I more than rock with him. Plus, that joint came out like 8 years ago...you know how much music there is? All kidding aside, man...my music consumption has gone down, since the pandemic. My main music listening time was at the gym. I’ve been to the gym like 3 times, since March. I don’t drive to work anymore. When I’m at home, I’m watching something on tv.

In response to Reply # 102

Seems like anytime someone thinks differently from you on a particular subject, they're "weird".

This is hilarious, especially when you say it in response to shit you clearly didn't actually read, or comprehend if you did.

-He said he's more than a casual Nas fan

In response, you said: "I can understand if you don't rock with someone..."

-He said he he was excited about it, queued it up, but never got to it.

You said: "there is no reason to not listen to an album. Especially during a pandemic.. lol"

There's plenty of reasons not to listen to an album.

Like being more excited about other albums.

Or being more inclined toward other entertainment mediums.

Or just plain old getting busy with life and just not getting around to it.

All of which is completely normal.

I'm sure this will blow your mind, but it's not weird to not think or act exactly like legsdiamond. Take your time with that revelation.

I’ll go farther and say ODBs album doesn’t crack the Top 25 for 1995 in my opinion.

Outside of like 3 joints...you can keep that mess.

And before people ask...in no order

Liquid Swords
Only Built 4 Cuban Linx
The Infamous
Doe Or Die
Soul Food
Dah Shinin’
Livin’ Proof
Me Against The World
Lifestylez Ov Da Poor & Dangerous
E. 1999 Eternal
Labcabincalifonia
Do You Want More?!!!??!
The Natural
Goodfellas
Jealous One’s Envy
Hold It Down
KRS-One
4, 5, 6
All We Got Iz Us
Poverty’s Paradise
Conversation
Coast II Coast
Dogg Food
Sittin’ On Chrome
Operation Stackola
Safe + Sound
Top Of The World
World Ultimate
III: Temples Of Boom
Last Chance, No Breaks

There’s 30 for good measure...got a few more too. Probably lands around 33 on my list.

I’ll also like to add that earlier this year some dude in The Lesson claimed 1999 was as good of a year as 1995 and said there was no drop off even from artists that released albums in those years essentially saying, Beneath The Surface = Liquid Swords, Immobilarity = Cuban Linx, and Murda Muzik = Infamous.

Forgot who that was but that idiot needs to be in here.

...persona. When it first dropped, I was very much in the "What the fuck? He's wasting all these great RZA beats!" Over time, I began to enjoy the unconventionality. It's another album that I listened to a lot this year (to write the 25th anniversary tribute), and I found the weird shit like "Don't U Know?" or "Goin' Down" pretty entertaining. Even bizarre shit like "Brooklyn Zoo 2" has that fire verse from Ghostface.

Yeah, he's not the best lyricist, and GZA wrote most of his stuff. But he did apparently write Brooklyn Zoo himself, which is still an all-timer. In the end, there's a lot more I like on that album than I don't. Truthfully, I only really dislike "Harlem World," and since I first bought the album on tape, I didn't hear that song until much later.

He was fun to listen to for people who could enjoy the feel, energy and melody of an emcee beyond lyrics only.

And maybe I shouldn't say he was "ahead of his time" in that sense, but moreso just brave to be who he was in NY. He often talks about his love to west coast and southern artists, so he was vibing to elements that NY was slow to accept.

Many did, but he was always the Wu's Flava Flav to me. More of a character, and I hate to say it...comic relief.

And just like Flava Flav had some classic lines in PE joints, and had a couple of solo hits, ODB's output pretty much stacked up the same to me.

I'm glad you found your way, my son. CL1 was my turbo button to make me a Wu Tang fan forever, so it will always have a special spot over here. I listened to it this year and had a blast too so hey.

I tend to skew positive, but here goes my positive sins:

- I'm having a hard time making a list of all-timers that doesn't have Kendrick and Roc Marciano on there. And depending on how far I go, Curren$y is going to show up too. Maybe it's bias towards recent stuff but I hear jams on top of jams with all 3 of these folks.

- Doom would be on there too so maybe I'm okay per hip hop head law? Well good, becaaaaaaaause...

- I like J. Cole and I'm not sure how it got cool to call him boring or wack. Friday Night Lights was a good time for me and still is. I'm shocked that he allegedly moves hella units for years, but I generally like most of what he puts out...even when he went into the sing too much phase on Forest Hills. Speaking of singing...

- Drake has had one helluva career with a mountain of songs I can throw on with a straight face right today and enjoy. I contend that folks would shit golden bricks out of their asses over several Drake songs if it wasn't Drake. Lord Knows is the obvious one, but there's a bunch of others. Example: imagine if Views (the song) was the intro to Benny's Hit Boy album. Just imagine how much folks would love that beat and the raps.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eZMX5YjnorQ

I mean verbatim. Word for word. Folks would go on and on about 'the flow' and how 'Benny is ready for his moment'.

- I also feel very good about the best 40 or so Rick Ross songs. When he got it right, he got it RIGHT. And he had a 3 or 4 album/mixtape run where he basically couldn't miss for what he was doing. It is easy to forget or act like a bunch of dudes just nailed it 3 or 4 releases in a row, but its not!

- Okay, one negative one: I get it and I like most of the songs folks my age like (Buddy Remix) but I never put any De La album in heavy rotation. Not because I didn't think it was good. But just because I never found myself going back to them like I did with a bunch of other stuff.

TFA, Voodoo, and LWFC would not exist if it weren't for Dilla.

Fantastic Vol 2, whether you or anyone else likes it, was a seminal album, and a highly regarded work.

I, in this very thread, called Doonit a GOAT tier beat

Dilla is in fact legendary.

If he's not for you, that's all good.

But to say "people act like he's legendary" as though that's not what he actually is to a significant segment of notable hip hop artists is just a blatant denial of reality.

Ask:

Busta
Common
Qtip
Questlove
Black Thought
Hi-Tek
Talib Kweli
D'Angelo
Erykah Badu
Raphael Saadiq
James Poyser
Robert Glasper
Kendrick
Joey Badass
Flying Lotus
Pete Rock
Black Milk
De La

Even Rawce is on record as wishing he could have worked with Dilla.

as them if Dilla is a legend.

In fact, i'll issue an empirical challenge:

Go to twitter, and tweet 10 established Hip Hop artists.
Ask them if they consider Dilla a legendary artist.
Then screenshot their response.

I'll go even further.

Among beat makers, he's a guy a LOT of cats look to, because his technique is absolutely legendary. He's got a swing that's unique to him.

His sample chopping is unique to him.

His drum sound is unique to him.

His hi hat patterns are, again, unique to him.

He's absolutely a guy people who do this shit actually study, emulate, imitate, and try to build on.

Whether or not he's your personal vibe is one thing. That shit's subjective. You could call him out & out trash, and that's still in the realm of your personal taste.

What isn't subjective, is his status as an artist's artist. We got motherfuckin grammy award winning jazz pianists paying tribute to this man.

To say, or even imply, that he's not legendary, is to step outside the realm of objective reality.

On this matter, yours is a sin that cannot be absolved without sincere repentance.

When Eazy E dropped, and later N.W.A., I thought that's what real hip hop was. N.W.A., Ice T, and Too Short. Anything gangsta, cussin', misogynistic....that's what was cool. Growing up in the South side of Chicago in the late 80's didn't help either.

Couldn't understand the audacity of rappers being about peace, good vibes, and having fun.

B.D.P., at the time, intrigued me because they had a song called 'Stop the Violence' but didn't seem soft.

Thought Jungle Brothers were weird. Didn't like ATCQ first 2 albums when they dropped.

Didn't come around until high school when I stopped trying to be like those around me, and started being myself. Also met other like minded individuals and the rest was history.

So far we got:

-I don't like Dilla
-Biggie ain't the GOAT
-Don't like Native Tongues

Surely there's more.

I got one:

I don't see the GOAT list as KRS/Rakim/Kane/G Rap

I see them as foundational pieces. Giants, to be sure, and everyone who came after stands on those broad shoulders. You can't escape those influences. They're far too deeply ingrained in everything that came after, as blueprints and archetypes.

And I think that's the conversation to have, where they're concerned.

Also:

I think lyricism is overvalued by some. An MC isn't just the words, and I think we all know that. It's the style, the voice, and whether people like it or not, the personality and image are factors.

A great MC is the sum of all those parts. I love a super lyrical miracle as much as the next ex-backpacker, but that's not the end all.

Nobody in their right mind picks up a Rawce record to satiate a BARS! fix.

I don't play Jeezy for slick word play. That's not what makes him great.

Lyricism is but one pillar, and my eyes glaze over whenever I see a guy start harping on lyricism as the end all, be-all. If you can't say that shit in a way that catches the ear, who gives a fuck.

Totally. I don't really listen to any of their music. But agree that they deserve their props regardless, and everyone who came after stands on their shoulders. No question.

But besides Rakim (and even he teeters on the edge), none of them are in my top 10, personally.

Right. This is why Snoop has always been way more interesting and better to me than, say, latter-career Eminem. Eminem's technical mic skills are 2nd to none. But his music is a positively *brutal* listen. And it wasn't always like that. He used to spit bars and make songs that sounded good to the ears. Now it's just grating.

Meanwhile Snoop came out firing, but was never really lyrical to begin with. His output has been hit or miss for much of his career but even if his lyrical skills aren't top tier, his flow and voice and cadence make up for any lack in lyrical content.

they both were ahead of their time but also had a style a flow that is unique and stands the test of time.

definitely agree on lyricism isnt the end all for valuing an MC. style is probably that first thing that grabs me, then voice, then i can appreciate the lyricism. some of my favorite rappers arent necessarily great lyricists, many are.

my point was Rakim IS a GOAT, the others, no.

because people STILL RAP LIKE RAKIM. not exactly 1991, BUT you can still SEE the DNA there.

THUS, I WAS DISAGREEING WITH YOU SAYING RAKIM ISN'T A GOAT.

I don't see people out here giving hella KRS-esque bars.

I WAS MAKING NO COMMENTARY ABOUT THEM BEING FOUNDATIONAL. I AGREE WITH YOU THERE.

>my point was Rakim IS a GOAT, the others, no.

Then you're objectively wrong, because each of them absolutely is a GOAT.

The top four spots on that list just doesn't belong to them.

>because people STILL RAP LIKE RAKIM. not exactly 1991, BUT you
>can still SEE the DNA there.

You can still see the DNA from all of those guys.

>THUS, I WAS DISAGREEING WITH YOU SAYING RAKIM ISN'T A GOAT.

Your post doesn't read that way.

Frankly, this one still doesn't read like you actually understood what I said.

Nowhere did I say those guys aren't on that GOAT list. They are each, unarguably, "a" GOAT. That's not even debatable.

I said "I don't see the GOAT list as KRS/Rakim/Kane/G Rap"

"the" and "a" are different things.

>I don't see people out here giving hella KRS-esque bars.

Do you think someone needs to sound like KRS to be influenced by him?

I don't hear much KRS in Fat Joe. But KRS is God in the flesh as far as Joey Crack is concerned.

Influence isn't confined solely to the style itself.

>I WAS MAKING NO COMMENTARY ABOUT THEM BEING FOUNDATIONAL. I
>AGREE WITH YOU THERE.

Yeah, I don't believe I took any issue with your commentary on this.

Your angry, all caps reply contained enough information to have a coherent conversation. It's not my fault your initial post didn't, so save the all caps theatrics.

That's your fault.

Sit your all caps typing ass down.

>yes i read your dumb ass post. smh.

The "dumb ass post" that your mostly agreed with? Gotcha.

The only thing dumbass about it was your initial response.

so, I SAID WHAT I SAID. ALL CAPS.

>i don't care about whether your right or i'm wrong but moreso

>this is twice in the last week" or whatever you said.

That's the second time in recent memory you responded to something in a way that looks like you didn't even read what was actually said.

>like, did it matter to you THAT much?

Define "matter". Define "THAT much".
In the context of discussion?
Of course it matters.

But "THAT much" is just you doing more dumb theatrics. How much muchness is "THAT much" to you?

It matters enough that, when you reply with half assed nonsense that reads like you didn't actually read was said.... I'm going to point out that you replied half assed nonsense that reads like you didn't actually read was said, and then go on about my day as though you only exist for the brief moment your screen name popped up with that reply.

So you tell me: How much is THAT much?

>and yeah, it sounded like you were saying you don't consider
>them GOATs but that they were stepping stones to get to the
>GOATs.

What it sounded like, and what it said, are two different things.

Of course, someone who wasn't super quick to be all "I disagree" with a bunch of all caps rage typing, would have asked "what do you mean by this?".

>so, I SAID WHAT I SAID. ALL CAPS.

Does it matter THAT much, however much "THAT" is?

In response to Reply # 122

I remain a big fan of Em's 1st album, as well as the 2nd.

There's a lot that's relatable in that album, i.e, Rock Bottom.
Some are just plain creative "As The World Turns".

"My Name Is" deserved every ounce of attention it received.

There's a LOT of dark shit that people take far too seriously, IMO.

I see shit like Bonnie & Clyde as someone dealing with deep pain, finding a cathartic outlet to cope with that pain, not as a guy who would actually do that shit.

Guilty Conscious deals with very real, very serious subject matter, and is indicative of people who have been in those situations, battling the moral implications of their choices.

It's dark, it's funny, it's deliberately offense, and there's so much good to be had there.

That said?

-The beats. They work, and there are a couple of genuinely dope beats there- but those are the Dre joints. Most of that shit feels bland, generic, and lifeless. They work for me, in their way, because it just fits what Em is doing. MMLP was the high water mark for production in his career.

-Everyone isn't going to identify with, or get, much of it.

He talks about being poor and picked on, but his brand of poverty and struggle is not going to play for everyone, particularly to a Black or Hispanic audience coming from a white kid. Particularly the shit going off on his mom.

I don't see SSLP as some opus. It's not required listening, particularly with a wealth of notable material coming out in that era.

I'd classify as absolutely worthwhile, but definitely not for everyone.

but I was never a huge fan of The Fugees, DMX, nor Mobb Deep.

Of the three, the sole song I can say I actually liked was Shook Ones.

Well, I suppose I should include Cowboys because the last verse from John Forte and How Many Mics because of Lauryn Hill's verse from that as well. Both verses still hold up.

I don't mean this as disrespect to the dead, but while he was alive, I never checked for Prodigy either.

Outside of Fancy Clown and Great Day, I can't stand Madvilliany.

I can't explain it, but I was never drawn to listening to this album after initially buying it and trying to like it at the time.

Maybe I'll try to listen to this again to see if there's more tracks that I can gravitate to beyond the two I mentioned above.

And I'm quite familiar with Doom and Madlib, so it's not that case where I'm apprehensive to their relative styles.

Vocally, it's everywhere.

Some songs are straight up soul music (X Factor).
Some joints are just rappity rap hip hop (Final Hour)
Some are a blend that lean heavily hip hop (Lost Ones)
Some are a blend that lean heavily hip hop (Everything is Everything)
Some are much more funk oriented (Every Ghetto, Every City)

The production ismore or less the same blend, but I'd argue that it leans heavily hip hop. Eveen.the R&B, soul, and funky joints have a more traditional hip hop ethic to them, from the drum sounds to the drum programming.

Certain joint like "Tell Him" break the whole formula and go straight up R&B.

The argument then becomes circular, in that core hip hop sound was taken from all those other styles.

Frankly, I view it very much as an aggregation of 20th Century Black music to that point in time. Given that umbrella, I don't see a fence on which to sit.

That said, it's an album I personally revere highly.

I guess what I’m getting at is if someone asks you “what are the best hip-hop albums of 1998” are you going, Aquemini, Moment Of Truth, Black Star, Soul Survivor, Capital Punishment...Miseducation???

I don’t know if I would recommend it in that same light.

I do agree that it’s a great album and a great mixture of many styles and hip-hop is prominent in that mix.

I also agree that hip-hop as an art form is a culmination of many influences and genres and in that sense, it is hip-hop.

I'm saying, I don't think there's a wrong answer there.

I think it's perfectly valid to include it right alongside those other joints, and it's just as valid if someone chooses to set it aside in a category apart from more traditional hip hop albums.

I've read (not necessarily on OKP) about a lot of hate those two albums get. Bought both and I wasn't disappointed at all in either one. "Fake Bonanza" and "Napoleon Dynamite" are two of my favorite songs from him.

43 here. Been going back lately to revisit these popular opinion classic albums to see what I missed on my initial listens back when I was a teen and emerging adult and they still don't hit me. Nothing wack about these albums, but they weren't as ground breaking as history claims. All of them had about 2 great songs, a few more good ones, and the rest were filler.

I started doing this after finally deciding to listen to all of The Great Adventures of Slick Rick and realizing that this album is everything that they said it was. That's the beautiful thing about music, if it's great, there's no time stamp. If it's okay, it sounds dated.

I always wondered why A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing doesn't get the praise that Breaking Atoms gets.

An album can be great and still have a ‘you’d like it more if you were there for it when it was out’ quality, right? I think about this with a bunch of 90s albums since there’s a lot of joints that sound ‘normal’ now but at the time, it was a crazy piece of work. Or crazy things happened on the record. I think this about Missy albums. Or even Outkast albums or UGK Ridin Dirty. Or that first Group Home. Or Infamous.

And I’ve been on okp for years trying to talk people out of judging albums like folks grade a scantron test. You know, that whole ‘this 15-song album is dope and I get that it changed how folks rapped, but I don’t love song #8 so I don’t think it’s a classic’. Or even something like not getting that some rappers have a wider range than others and it should be okay. Aka I don’t need Curren$y to try to make Life After Death. And if Griselda wants to threaten me and throw out gun adlibs for 40 minutes every time, cool! I know what I’m getting when I go to them and it’s fine.

Yes. And I think his analogy/comparison between the albums he listed and Great Adventures is flawed in that I'd put Great Adventures on another level or two above those other albums he named that he didn't end up liking when he re-listened.

Great Adventures *is* timeless and set the stage for a lot that came after it. And as he noted, it sounds just as fresh today as it did then.

The other albums listed (War Report, et al), with the exception of maybe Bizarre Ride, fall into the category you just described: albums that made their mark in the time they were released, but may not have the same impact on someone who's hearing them for the first time just today.

That doesn't make those latter albums "bad" by any means, just means they are more a product of their time period than those Next Level albums that will sound good no matter when you hear them.

I think OutKast is on that Next Level we're talking about. Their shit doesn't sound dated at all and I think someone hearing OutKast today can still be blown away just like we were in the 90s/early 00s when we heard them live.

its very true that a "flawed" album can still be a classic and a favorite. i think it happens most of the time. there are some albums where i cant find a flaw and enjoy but dont love. i will constantly put other albums that might have flaws over them.

the other distinction is that there are albums that are important and monumental but arent necessarily great. they had a big impact at the time, had influence yet dont hold up.

a list of the best albums is not the same as a list of the most important albums.

loved that album.

I definitely go back and listen to old classics and laugh at some of them because they truly had more than a few filler cuts.

I can also go back and appreciate some of the songs I didnt care for then and listen with old ears and be like “that was actually a dope song” or appreciate the flow/delivery they were trying to push at the time.

Drop La Menage from the album and I give it 5 stars all day. Production was a masterclass in sample stacking and Drez was in full on conceited arrogant MC steez. That album still goes hard today.

related to Large Professor.

A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing was big when it came out. All the artsy girls I knew loved that album. Fans can be simple sometimes, Black Sheep had some gimmicky marketing so maybe people hang on to that too much. Dres was my favorite pen in Native Tongues at the time.

It never clicked to me that Dres was an ex-con, at the time I thought the "Black Sheep" thing was based around the lewdness of the content.

Period.

Had Idlewild been all of Big Boi’s joints with Andre verses...classic

If Speakerboxxx had Andre verses on every song...classic

If Sir Lucious, Vicious Lies, and Boomiverse had Andre verses...classic

They lost their way when Andre tried to sing.

That’s the truth.

The key to Kast was they were surrounded by great musicians and singers that added to their vision.

Those people got cut out when Andre tried to do all of that.

But I'll need to come back when I'm sober to properly flesh them out.

I'll just say for now that I don't *totally* agree but I understand your position here. But I have a ton of nuance to toss in and I think there's a really good discussion to be had re: OutKast, the Dre and Big dynamic, SB/TLB, artistry in general, etc.

I'll be back to dive in I promise lol.

My relationship with God
Is kind of odd
The nigga the B-I-G won't part
Feeling the presence up in my heart
But never no chicken to the nigga
In on that style like that
Talking about the way the Lord
Be lifting these burdens up off my back
Better that I bust raps
The way that I cut that
Ho you couldn't
You trying too hard, you better find Him
I'm hoping you understood it
Could it be (What?)
The niggas around the way
Don't really be thinking about the consequences
Under the circumstances
Until you pinch them
Then a nigga be one to listen (Why?)
Cause you woke that ass up
Yoke that ass up
Proving the man in the sky
That holds that ass up
But it's over now
He cut off
Some niggas done broke you clean off
But got to get on your knees
And praise the only
Now your soul lost

I remember seeing it in The Source's 1992 album of the year list, but never bit. I finally listened a month ago and was blown away at the skill, versatility, and most of all production. His flow was very similar to DJ Akshun era Scarface, but maybe that was a coincidence.

EA-Ski and Ant Banks deserve more flowers when it came to their production.

Probably more of a "Hip Hop sin" to say TLB is better.

I love TLB waaaaayyyyyyyyyy more than speakerboxxx, and speakerboxxx was excellent, but Andre just had way better songs to me.

Both are excellent. But this split album made clear (if it wasn't already) how much more interesting an artist Dre was than Big in that group. And as you said, the songs were just better, and the concept/flow of the album more mature than SB.

That said, Big has since had one hell of a solo career and has dropped some of my favorite albums and/or songs of the past decade both on his own and as part of Big Grams.

The Love Below is predominantly garbage that I've never once been able to listen to in full from front-to-back.

Andre is an amazing rapper who makes incredible hip hop music. But he makes terrible <every other genre> music.

While I don't believe this is a sin, I imagine a lot of people would consider it as one seeing as The Love Below is revered so much (I rarely see people say SB > TLB), which I think is a product of people preferring Andre > Big Boi. But fact is, Big Boi has managed to create a really solid solo discography (starting with SB), and Andre hasn't. And that says a lot.

Andre tried too hard to make this cross-genre, non-OutKast album and failed. Big Boi played it safe and stuck to what he knew/was good at and just made a dope OutKast-ish album.

That album went diamond largely on the strength of "Hey Ya !" and "Roses" and TLB is heralded by the majority of folks - hip-hop fans or otherwise - as the better of the two packaged albums. You're in the minority here.

And for the record, I don't blame you or anyone for not feeling TLB. That's totally understandable for the reasons you noted and many more.

But to call it "garbage" or, especially, to say he "failed" is just objectively nonsense.

Most hip-hop fans are have absolutely terrible taste when it comes to other genres. And it’s mostly due to them not listening.

So when a hip-hop artist branches out like The Love Below or whatever the fuck it is Drake does, they seem to give credit based on them “doing something different”

Problem is, what they’re doing is actually a terrible form of the genre they’re attempting.

Andre actually had great studio musicians to make TLB sound interesting. But a lot of it was just his being different for the sake of being different and attempting to do music that sounded like his influences.

And there’s really nothing wrong with that other than the fact that hip-hop fans for the most part live in a bubble and think this exposure to other genres is instantly great.

It’s a weird dynamic honestly.

There may be some truth to this first part, that many hip hop fans (myself probably included) don't really know enough about other genres to form coherent perspectives about when a hip hop artist branches out into other types of music. But ...

... I can really only speak for myself of course, but I'm an example of someone who doesn't really factor in whether an artist "branched out" or not when evaluating my feelings about music, at least not as a primary way to evaluate whether I like an album or not. For example I love TLB, but have no interest in Drake whatsoever, and absolutely loathe "808s and Heartbreaks" from Kanye (which is often compared to TLB for a bunch of obvious reasons).

I will say that *respect* when an artist is willing to take some risks with their work and test the limits of their skillsets. I just don't use it as a primary measuring stick to judge the quality of a piece of work. So in regard to TLB specifically, I like that album (and did from the beginning) because I just straight up liked the music, at first. It was fun and light and had some really excellent musical elements. As I listened to it more I found that it had a coherent vision and a consistency of sound due in large part, as you said, to 3k having contributions from some great musicians who helped him bring the vision to life.

Dre can't sing for shit, that's never changed - lol. But I think that the album worked well within his limitations and that the music and consistency of the vibe overcame his shortcomings as a vocalist.

And again, I thought the concept was fully fleshed out and that he achieved his vision to the extent that he could, and that the end product was a just lot of good musicianship, content, and just fun music *shrugs*.

I can dig it. Especially for folks who aren’t interested in stuff that isn’t rap from frustrated rappers.

I’m almost over wishing Andre hadn’t forced the split in outkast if that’s how it happened. Cuz dude could have totally mixed rapping and singing and Big Boi could have steadied the ship with straight up and down great rapping. They had a good thing together IMO.

And yes, Big Boi deserves at least as much credit for continuing on solo as Dre does for curling up in a corner and doing a few verses here and there but somehow never having a verse for Twan’s shit (record label demands, drama, and/or whatever the fuck). Royal flush and all of those songs from around then were grand to me and easily could’ve been Outkast songs.

And shit, Andre 3k should feel like an asshole if he looked around the industry then and especially now. Singers are rapping. Rappers are singing. Drake? Shit! Every song is a mystery. He sings over rap shit. Raps over moody singer shit. Sometimes he does both. Pharrell? Same thing? Kendrick’s TPAB? C’mon man!

Seeing Andre NOW and hearing/reading what he says about rapping now, I kinda get it. I still blame him a little because there’s a bunch of dead rappers who wish they could get hooked up some volume. And a bunch of other old acts figured out ‘hey, I’m still here. I could go ahead and say something’. But if he’s not the guy for that, then he’s not the guy. He gave plenty of jams that still stand up so I’ll lament the decision forever but I’m less disappointed/mad than ever. This is even the case after I hear one of his ‘who knows when this was recorded’ verses that show up on albums.
