Is he wrong for not wanting people dancing ON THE FURNITURE? No.
Did he handle the situation in a good way? No.
Is he encouraging people to twerk by choosing the play (or have a dj play) music that folks want to dance to? Yes.
Is he a proponent of respectability politics? Yes.

JK.

I think I mostly agree with you. I don't think he is wrong for not wanting people to twerk. Probably could have communicated it 'nicer'. I don't think the women are wrong to do it if they were playing the music.

I will differ in that I don't know if its respectability politics when its an all black crowd. I have always had an issue with respectability politics because embedded in it is the notion that we want black people to act a certain way for the sake of not embarrassing us in front of white people which doesn't allow us our own agency when we decide we want to dress and act a certain way.

religion and class dynamics can be a part of that too.
I wonder if he would have had a problem with people slow dancing... or waltzing or some shit like that. It seems to me that the issue with twerking is about how he perceives that specific type of dancing...
And so I think his comments about opening the place so that black folks could have a "nice place" and "for the culture," to me, show that he thinks twerking is lower class, or not respectable behavior.

Complicated by the fact that they have club nights and a club section.
So basically, he needs to holler at the dj and stfu. Imo.

Edit: and then he makes a comment about twerking, and how is he gonna ask men to respect the women if they aren't "respecting themselves." He can gtfoh with that.

If the man wants to have a fancy brunch and have people wear tuxedos and gowns and waltz and not twerking, he got a right to it. And maybe that's what other black folk want and they turn out for that. Maybe they don't and the business fails.

What I don't vibe and think is even a bit racist, is to say that somehow being anti-twerking is somehow anti-black people (as expressed by CIPHA below, not necessarily you).

I just don't see how being black means we can't deem certain stuff low class on our own accord (and not to impress white people).

if Black middle/upper class "culture" wasn't just rich white culture in Black face. All culture from Black folks is created within poor and working class communities. Black middle and upper class folks just latch on to it and then water it down with their bougie nonsense.

If it's just a straight up restaurant, then yeah he's right. He doesn't need to take the sanctimonious "pull up your pants" position though.

The restaurant has a DJ, so it seems to me that he created an environment for dancing (i.e. twerking). So he needs to figure out what kind of place he wants to run.

the appropriate way to approach that group is with an invite to get their twerk on in the lounge, after they finish their meal...

...but to please refrain from twerking in the main dining area to be respectful of other guests...

I'd be more worried about a dining room full of people not distanced, w/o masks, etc...if that really happened yesterday based on the timestamp of the vid

Lookin' like a superspreader event...twerk on that.

Unfamiliar with that song and artist, but from the title I'm gonna asume it's twerk music.

Why not play swing jazz, salsa or something similar if he didn't want that energy?

the idea what did they expect to happen when they played a certain type of music.

I mean we don't HAVE to dance on demand when we hear certain music. Imjustsaying.

My favorite brunch spots use to have DJs and they definitely weren't playing jazz and it can create a nice vibe without folks dancing.

Those ladies didn't *have* to twerk, but probably thought it was cool because of the environment that was set. If the DJ was playing salsa I'd expect to be able to salsa dance to it. I can't get my common on and breakdance to "Breaker's Revenge?" The song is literally telling me to break and say "uh," lol.

Also, I'm assuming dancing was allowed and there was a dancefloor. If they started dancing at their tables or in the aisle then they are dead wrong for that.

I agree with you. If the manager opens up a space for dancing, it's a free for all as to what you may get. But if they just thought it was cool to get up and dance in the aisles of this restaurant, then they're way off base.

And people were dancing at there tables and not the dancefloor. Who cares? There was some dancing meant to go on in the spot. You look petty telling people they should move a few feet to be dancing.

If there is no dance floor and it was really just a restaurant, then there is less cause to be dancing.

It probably isn't the time and place for it. But you shouldn't act shocked when you set the environment for something and some people end up living up to it.

- implying women don't respect themselves when twerking
- treating Black people w/disrespect

He's doing exactly what white people do, extracting money from black culture but attempting to distance himself from black people.

You opened a restaurant that's clearly trying to be a club. He got a DJ blasting Throw Dat Ass in a Circle. He serving drinks in used Dusse bottles. Bet you anything he got bottle girls in there with sparklers, so he's running a club and pretending its a restaurant.

But now he's mad that somebody was shaking their ass? Fuck him.

If you wanted her off the furniture then tell her that or put her out, but the rest of that respectability politics shit is bullshit.

Can get the fuck out of my restaurant??? That guy is trash. It’s a way he could discourage twerking in his establishment (as y’all have noted) and not lecture and literally curse out his customers.

I wish everyone in there had said check please at once and left out.

Him cursing them out is just as classless as whoever was twerking, actually it’s far worse.

Makes him look even worse that in the video everyone was just sitting down eating.

had to learn that the hard way myself.

Short story:
I got kicked out and banned for 72 hours from a shopping mall when I was a teen from me spouting off at an 'assistant manager' of an arcade inside the mall. This white 'assistant manager, who happened to be a classmate of mine, told me to leave the arcade because I had a bag of food with me. I gave him lip because there were a few other white kids with food (who i KNOW he has seen) in the arcade as well....but he did not tell them to leave. The security came and escorted me and my friend from the mall. Went home to tell my moms and pops and we ALL went back to the mall to speak to the manager. Manager didn't make himself available. Moms contacted her lawyer and after all was said and done, lawyer said there was nothing they could do because the mall was private property. They can tell ANYONE to leave ANYTIME for ANY reason whatsoever. The End.

cultural expression. For so long, there have been restrictions on our culture--they took our languages, our drums, our food--and we've always found a way to experiment and salvage the remnants of the dominant society to create fresh perspectives and inject this bloodless nation with its only true home-bred culture.

To stifle the twerk--in any setting--is to deny the cultural inventiveness and dynamism of black people. This owner is clearly beyond the pale and draped in the flag of respectability politics because to ask black folks to act with "dignity" in the white man's country is really only an attempt to get black folks to act white!

Twerk on!

Everything has been figured out except how to live.

Sometimes dancing is appropriate. Sometimes it's not.

so i guess the clip in the OP is him coming back to match their energy. i aint mad at him.

https://www.instagram.com/p/CIOo0orh-c1/

In a post on the establishment’s official Instagram, he said, “When the first incidents occurred the guests were politely asked to stop and have respect for themselves and other customers. The guests at issue were at three (3) tables. As this video shows you will see guests spoken to politely and literally begged to stop standing on our furniture and twerking. There are other videos that show much more of the behavior in the following videos, but we do not want to embarrass the guests sitting at those tables.”

He continued to show that before the viral video he politely handled the situation, and also thought of the customers' well-being, and also any other... (the rest is on their site i guess)

If he took issue with them getting busy on the furniture, politely asked them to stop, and they ignored that and kept going, well... they get what they get after that.

There's absolutely no reason he should have to be the good cop over and over and over again, and no good reason that he can't raise the intensity of his request if the first request was ignored.

If you can't abide by the first request, bets are off after that and IMO he's well within bounds to chew their ass out for it.

I just can't clap to the "respect yourself" piece of it.

I think he should have comped all their meals an asked them to leave the establishment after his first approach didn't work. That is a financial hit, I know, but it would have been more business-like. Then he should have asked that DJ to play music that fits the environment he is trying to create.

You have an establishment that:

Has a club DJ
Blasting club music
Through club speakers
At club levels
Serving club drinks
At club prices
In Dusse cognac bottles (like at the club)

But you get mad when I do some club shit?

Niggas love pretending.

but the nigga didn't scold the patrons for dancing on the furniture. He scolded them for dancing. He didn't address her specifically, he addressed everybody.

If I go to the club (and I know I'm in the club because, once again, there's a club DJ playing club music at club levels) and nobody is dancing, that don't mean I'm not supposed to dance. It's a fucking club.

I don't know where you been the last decade, but if you go to any black brunch there is a good chance that music will blasting the latest hot black music and that doesn't mean you will find people dancing.

In fact, I remember there was this whole social media call out about White Brooklyn Brunch spots to be blasting nothing but like 90s hip-hop to the point its a cliche.

70. "thank god you're not the only black person I know- here or otherwise."
In response to Reply # 64
Tue Dec-01-20 01:37 PM by Cold Truth

I've lived with plenty of Black people, people who are essentially family.

My wife is Black.

So is her family.

Black friends, coworkers, etc, and we've gone out to restaurants, stores, movies, all that shit.

I don't recall anyone, at any point in time, twerking or even dancing every time a danceable song comes on at a restaurant.

Nobody pulls over to the side of the road to literally drop it likes it's hot when they hear "snoooooooooooooooop!" hits the radio.

I've never been in a store with a black woman who dropped down to get her eagle on next to a rack of Doritos the second she heard Nelly's voice.

But hey, none of that makes me an expert. that anecdotal experience means nothing. I'll defer to your expertise here.

What you're saying here is that if there's twerk music playing, Black people will stop dead in their tracks to shake that thang.

This is certainly testable though, and based on what you're saying....

I can walk up to a random Black person, anywhere, in any setting, pull out a boombox blaring Back That Azz Up, and they WILL in fact back that azz up.

Again, I defer to your expertise here- but I strongly suspect they be mortified, insulted, and, frankly, hurt by such an outlandish display of ignorance and insensitivity.

For that reason, I'll forgo the empirical test, and defer to your expertise. Thanks to you, my knowledge of Black culture now includes the understanding that, if any Black person, anywhere, at any time, and in any setting, hears twerk music, THEY WILL FUCKING TWERK, by god.

Thanks for educating me.

behave a certain way but in certain environments where a DJ is involved a professional DJ literally sets the mood based on the owner/host's directions and they demographics of the crowd. Depending what is happening the dj may calm things down, at other times they will be asked to "hype it up". The same songs may not necessarily be played at a college graduation as at granny's 90th bday or a passing of the bar exam celebration or a noon brunch or a 3pm brunch.

but its funny how the same people who will say disrespectful shit on here or curse someone all the way out will turn around and scream respectability politics when someone Black gives a speech to Black folk.

Why do we claim to be so fragile when it comes to this type of stuff.

Just get up and leave and find another restaurant to twerk on furniture.

I've seen that a couple of times in this post, and that's a little concerning. Almost like we're saying it's a scientific fact that "the enwurds" can't resist twerking on furniture when their music is played. Are we simply accepting a lack of social self control on the part of his patrons? Since when does an establishment's musical choice "encourage" disrespect of their property? I've been in establishments where metal was playing but never have I seen folks starting a mosh pit on the furniture. Why do we defend the lack of self control among ourselves? Is that what we think freedom is?

Once again, the catalyst of the rant might have been dancing on the furniture, but the content of the rant wasn't about that. It was about dancing in general.

Also, again, you're obsessed with the use of the word "twerking" to refer to dancing and you're virtue signaling you hatred for the specific way that black women choose to move in this world.

Finally, nobody is arguing that one must dance when certain music is played, but why in the fuck wouldn't somebody think it appropriate to dance in a venue that has an entire dj playing dance music through club speakers?

How does this change the point? Were they doing it on his furniture or not?

Nigga. With all due respect, what you just typed there is dumb as fuck. If you have a problem with the word "twerk", that's you having the problem. You, yourself said they were "shaking their ass" because "Throw Dat Ass In A Circle" was playing. That silly shit about "hatred for the specific way black women chose to move in this world" is ridiculous. GTFOHWTBS.

>Finally, nobody is arguing that one must dance when certain

And here you are coming back to the same point. My original question stands. Why are we excusing a lack of self control among Black people simply because there's a live DJ playing dance music? That is exactly what you're suggesting but too afraid to say it outright. Grab your nuts, my nigga. Own what you're saying.

Now point out where anybody said anybody is unable to control their "twerking" when certain music comes on to back up your fuck ass assertion or go back to kid's table with you juvenile ass logic.

No, I asked the question because it was directly implied. You got in your bitch ass feelings and implied it yet again, on top of adding some clown shit about "hating the specific way black women move in the world" as if twerking on chairs is their natural state of being, which is more disrespectful to black women that anything in the whole post. You wanna say black folks can't control themselves and NOT say it at the same time. That's some corny cowardly shit.

There you go doing it again. A DJ playing Cash Money records ain't license to twerk on furniture. That's what you're saying with this "running it like a club but mad somebody shaking their ass" statement in reply 18. You say it's logical to twerk if there's a DJ playing Lil Ronny. I'm saying it's completely illogical and a lack of self control if the venue is a restaurant.

>Now point out where anybody said anybody is unable to control
>their "twerking" when certain music comes on to back up your
>fuck ass assertion or go back to kid's table with you juvenile
>ass logic.

Let's use your own statement where you're speaking out of both side of your mouth:

"... nobody is arguing that one must dance when certain music is played, but why in the fuck wouldn't somebody think it appropriate to dance in a venue that has an entire dj playing dance music through club speakers" - CIPHA

The answer is "Because it's a fucking dine-in/SIT DOWN restaurant, nigga. It's not referred to as, nor marketed as a 'club'. The only reason anyone would think it 'appropriate' is either lack of self control or stupidity."
Which one you riding with? Stupidity or lack of self-control?

Now YOU answer why you're defending the lack of self control and whether or not you think that's what freedom is.

This man spent over 80K+ to establish his black owned business in this community for this filth to try ruining it.

They didn't try this at a white owned restaurant due to respect for those establishments. They had to ruin a black owned business.

They could've gone to a club or somewhere else where such behavior is accepted. It's a shame that hardworking people cannot eat at out without some filth trying to ruin their night. The restaurant owner is righy for protecting his business. Take this bs somewhere else.

Do they have a dj playing twerk music at "white owned restaurants"?

I agree that standing on the furniture was extra but folks acting like its a crime for folks to dance are either being willfully obtuse or just don't get out lol. The brunch/day party scene is the new nightlife especially for people beyond the "club" stage and that is obviously the crowd that this establishment was catering to. DJs play a variety of music from "twerk" songs to "neo soul" to the various "slides" and different people dance to all of them. I was at brunch last weekend with 2 latinas and a white girl and the dj played a twerk song and they got it in lol. If people are getting too hype its very easy to tell the dj to tone it down. People are not going to twerk to Jill Scott or Erykah Badu lol.

This is not remotely the same as Karen so sit this one out ambulance chaser.

They could've damaged his business and caused harm to patrons. Yall really caping for their bullshit. White restaurants call police and watch this incident get resolved without negative publicity. These people were out to ruin his business. His restaurant is not marketed as a club. These women sought attention and they got it at the expense of a black business owner.

When he goes out of business do to idiotic protestors and insert chain restaurant replaces him these same idiots upset protesting will be silent.

Next time I hope he calls the cops and protects his business. Take your attention seeking asses to a club and stop ruining black owned businesses with these antics.

we distanced, we ate really good.. we were impressed by the food. I had a dinner meeting at the original restaurant about a year ago so i knew it was in point

then something happened around 9:00.

Clear heels and skripper dresses. We stayed for the show. One big woman had her shoes unbuckled as she ran to her seat because her feet were killing her. She said it out loud.. lmao.

more clear heels and cheap skripper dresses.

What really set it off and had us rolling is my wife predicting an order of 5 to 10 lemon slices for water. 2 minutes later a plate stacked with lemons came out.

Now, we will definitely go back when permitted because the food and service is on point but it wont be after 9 unless we want to see the show.

I think it belongs in clubs and the bedroom. However, I also recognize that some of my dislike comes from my own latent issues with respectability. The restaurant owner was crude and inappropriate in his response, and I hope Black women (the bulk of his customers) decide not to support his restaurant anymore.

We have a serious problem with misogyny in our community that normalizes Black men talking down to Black women, even when it's Black women who are the reasons for their success. I also dislike these Black business owners acting like their capitalist enterprises are for the culture just because they sell aspects of Black culture. Most of these businesses don't pay a living wage and are just as exploitative as a white business. Seriously, just run your restaurant and stop with the race talk.
