Generally, I don't trip too much if it's outside someone's house. It could simply be a military vet. I still have my suspicions, but I temper it.
If it's in the back of a truck, or a bumper sticker, or any sort of patriotic shirt, you'd bat very close to 1.000 in deducing their beliefs about minorities, gays, women's rights, how they feel about movies, all kinds of shit.
And in places where your assumptions are off, you'd still be pretty close to the mark.
