That's way higher than I expected.

I worked for Pfizer for 5 years and wile a lot of the upper management are awful, I don believe the vast majority of employees are good, honest scientist and that they won't let the vaccine out if it is harmful.

Yet it's Trump's HHS that developed "Operation Warp Speed" to deliver a vaccine to all Americans:

https://www.hhs.gov/coronavirus/explaining-operation-warp-speed/index.html

https://www.whitehouse.gov/briefings-statements/president-trump-leading-generation-effort-ensure-americans-access-covid-19-vaccine/

Somehow I missed all the hot takes from Alex Jones and the Q-bots calling out Trump for trying to vax us all.

This was even being peddled by cats like Los on Instagram:

One thing I will do is watch what happens to doctors and nurses since they will get the vaccine first well before the general public has access to it.

I'll keep an eye on that population before getting a shot.

My concern is with Trump and his cabinet pressuring the FDA to lower testing standards to rush the vaccine out. That's assuming of course the vaccine will be available before January 20th.

**edit**

I totally forgot that Gov. Cuomo mentioned a month or so ago that he would arrange for added testing of the vaccine before making it available statewide in NY. I believe the impetus for this is him skepticism of Trump wanting to rush the vaccine out due to the election. I wonder if that effort will be combined with NJ and CT.

I don't know about you but I'm tired of this fucking pandemic. If this moves us closer to normal again then everyone should get it. I understand the trepidation due to the connection with Trump BS, but some of these comments against a vaccine are sounding a little bit like the ones from anti mask dipshits.

i'm guessing you're referring to old people and the immunocompromised?

well, 8 months in, the real high risk group is Black and Latino people because we are half of all Covid deaths

that disproportionality speaks volumes about this country

sure, minorities are suffering through a global pandemic because minorities suffer from poor healthcare even under normal times.

unfortunately, I'm fairly sure that priority will not change once the vaccine is available. that said, even among minority groups there will be levels of risk when distributing the vaccine.

I'm saying, if there is a bottleneck distribution*, there will probably be people prioritized over others based on health history. so it may not be up to us (anyone relatively healthy under 60 without diabetes, asthma, etc) whether we can elect to take it or not.

*if a vaccine is effective, the entire world will want and need it. hell, in America it took half the year just to have masks and disposable wipes for everybody.

It is so on-brand in the worst way that Trumpers can only think that everything happening in the world is somehow set up to negatively impact them. It’s the exact complaint they have when minorities and/or women complain about anything ever: even overt racism/sexism, death, etcetera. Now, folks are sitting up in good overall situations and swearing that the world is against them cuz some overnight politician they voted for isn’t gonna be able to ride another loophole into another 4 years. Creating their own social media and shit so they can talk limited loser shit to each other and feel good about it. It’s bad. It’s scary. But it’s so on-brand. It would be funny if there wasn’t so many of them. But some folks really think the whole planet is supposed to revolve around their whims and wants. It’s always gotta be their birthday.

Zero here as well. Why would I trust this thing enough to be first in line? Also, I’m lucky enough to be able to work from home. I’m blessed, lucky, and good. I can go snorkeling or whatever in 2022 if I’m still here and the situation is more under control by then.

Definitely will get the vaccine, but don't want/need to be 1st dibs. Let's see some side effects, get it to those at higher risk, and I'll work from home some more.We were going on a cruise this year so let them get everything cleared up by 2022 and I'm good

Give everyone that vaccine - keep us masked up for 6 more months and then we're back in business.

If immunity is temporary keep us masked up for longer. We won't know that for a while.

By the time we get the vaccine, we hoping that the kinks show up and we are more educated and reassured about the decision

They already said the first round will go to health care workers and nursing homes. Then the immunocompromised. Then etc.

We’ll likely all hear months and months of reports on the vaccine’s efficacy before we get a chance. And they’ll continue to develop and improve the vaccine as it’s being deployed. So I’m not worried at all.

And Trump had nothing to do with the vaccine. At all. lol. So that part doesn’t scare me.

She said they needed more Black participants to ensure the vaccine is safe and effective for everyone.

The study is double blind and randomized, but they will unblind it if a participant gets sick or becomes eligible to get a commercially available vaccine.

how do they test whether or not it worked? Do you just go out into the world to see if you get the virus or not? Do they specifically expose you to the virus? Are you able to self-quarantine if your state/county recommends it, and if so how would they know if the vaccine works?

I have a symptoms diary that I have to fill out twice a week. Every couple months, I give them blood so they can test for antibodies. I notify them if I’ve been knowingly exposed to someone who is positive. If I’m sick, they’ll come do a nasal swab and collect some saliva. They gave me some at home test equipment like a pulse oximeter.

One of the scientists that worked on it said its bad for you. It doesn't seem safe. Vaccines take minimum 2.5 years of development whereas this took 9 months. I'll take my chances until concrete data shows no long lasting health defects 25 years after taking the vaccine.

But this scale and rapidity of vaccination is unprecedented. People go precautionary principle jumping out of the way approaching masked people on sidewalks, but are quick to embrace this. In response to Reply # 72

It's mostly funding, manpower and bureaucratic shortcuts that account for the speedy development of the Covid-19 vaccines. Cutting through all that red tape is probably the biggest factor.

In theory most vaccines could be developed within a timeframe like this, but since they normally have to compete with each other (and non-vaccine related health research) for resources and bureaucratic attention, they're not.

I could understand being wary of vaccines developed in Russia or China, since they have a history of poor transparency and corruption, but there's very little reason to distrust the current wave of vaccines coming from established universities and pharma corps.

And I'd take the opinion of currently working experts in the field over that of a single retired prof. I find that's generally a good strategy to end up on the right side of history, so to speak. Because there's always a retired dude with a degree willing to co-sign some dumb shit somewhere.

And is part of the group of scientists that is evaluating the trial data and making a judgment on whether america should start vaccinating people with the pfizer vaccine. His answer is going to be yes btw.

Covid 19 is new and not all that well understood in some basic ways that again make this uncharted territory for vaccine development. Offit isn't concerned about ADE with sars cov 2 but ADE was shown to occur in some animal models for sars cov 1. We don't know how immunity to the wild virus functions yet in some ways. the possible risk these unknowns may play seems to be outweighed for the vast majority of in the loop scientists informing public policy choices by the amount of suffering these vaccines seem like they can begin preventing basically today. But acting like it's all roses and there are NO question marks seems more rhetoric than reality

Yeah I'm not trying to argue that it's definitely safe (I don't know) and no questions should be asked, but it seems like people are just going "wow that's fast, can't trust it" instead of having actual specific concerns.

>>the possible risk these unknowns may play seems to be outweighed for the vast majority of in the loop scientists informing public policy choices

This is basically why I trust vaccines in general and I haven't seen much reason to act differently for the covid-19 ones.

Pretty close to eye to eye on this. Since I'm not going to be in any of the groups that will be first to get the vaccine, there will be plenty more data than was created by the trials to assess whether it's something I want to do. I wouldn't be thrilled if I was in some group for which it was mandated at this early stage though. To my knowledge, there are questions remaining about mandates. Will people working in hospitals HAVE to get it and quick? Workers in nursing homes? Etc.

I’m personally not super worried about how COVID would affect me if I get it. Obviously you never know, but based on my age, fitness level, no underlying conditions or issues ever detected, I don’t get sick often and when I do it’s minor so my immune system seems pretty good - I will in all likelihood be ok.

But I don’t want to risk getting it and being one of those asymptomatic people who spreads it to people who die from it.

Wish we had more time and info and data on long term effects though. That gives me some pause.

Statistically, it’s extremely unlikely I’d die. But who knows.

Still wish there was long term data, but nothing we can do about that obviously.

I’m scheduled for Feb. 17. Ready to get it over with.

there will be side effects, which is common. hopefully there won't be any adverse, long term effects. sux that we're in the beginning of this and really don't know much.

talked to my boy last night. he's still traveling a good bit, banging chicks. reluctant to get the vaccine for him and his kiddos. still thinks it's flu-like. overthinking, but not thinking clearly.

For the sake of more safety data and to get a full understanding of the vaccines’ long term effectiveness, I will wait 12 months.

It will not be readily available to everyone for awhile.. It will be delivered to high risk demographics first.

So within that time, more safety data will be collected.

Plus the vaccine will only be effective with stopping the symptoms of Covid, not the transmission. They have no idea if the vaccine will prevent the spread of covid. There isn’t enough data.

Come on bro, people who are vaccine hesitant are like gluten free people - most of the times there's no fucking reason for it.

And every asshole who "waits and sees" is just increasing risk to other people.

And waiting does means availability has to be there - I guess you need every simple thing spelled out.

If you get Covid BECUASE you took a wait and see approach - or if you spread it to other people - then my best effort will have to be a "Get well soon" post here.

hell, you cant even get it until April so what if YOU get Covid before then?

4 Tiers:
·Highest risk: Front-line clinical staff who are in contact with patients under investigation for or confirmed to have COVID-19

·High risk: Front-line clinical staff in all areas and support staff in clinical areas

·Moderate risk: Employees who have indirect or limited contact with patients

·Low risk: Administrative support staff with no routine patient contact

I'm in low-risk - So I might be able to get it sooner than someone not working for a hospital,or maybe not. Only time will tell. Whenever they say I can have it I'm, going to get it.

I'd prefer Pfizer vaccine because it's two shots separate by 3 weeks - Moderna is a 4 week separation.

So I'm as close as 4 weeks away from 95% immunity!!! Or as far away as whatever the last vaccine to be given is. But it sounds like the major health risk will be mitigated in the next 6 months!!

I hope to God that Biden comes in and speeds this shit up as much as he can.

Our first shot was on Friday. We're scheduling our front line workers at the most risk to get it in the next two weeks, then we'll open it wider!

Now doing: Doctors, Nurses, N.P.s, CNAs, security guards, janitors and admin people (who check you in, etc.) who are in locations with high COVID contact probability (emergency rooms, urgent care, etc.)

have they even said what has happened to all the medicine

in the interim, continued self-isolation with a wait and see for a

I'm at the point now where I will take the vaccine, period.

I've signed up and awaiting my turn.

I want to be clear that I think a healthy skepticism was warranted early on...However, I listen to facts, reason and logic and evaluate information from experts...and so far, from what I've learned, even including additional posts in this thread, i'm feeling more and more fine about the vaccine from either company.

Serious question, because I work with people who are saying the same thing - what's the fear?

Because I've only really heard about a handful of issues with vaccines in the past 50 years where they actually did something dangerous, and then it's too far few people than would have gotten very ill or died from the disease the vaccines prevents.

1)It won't work
2)It will give you COVID-19
3)That you'll experience an allergic reaction
4)That you'll experience a serious side effect before the second dose?
5)That in six months to a year you'll find out it has serious health impacts?
6)There's something wrong with the manufacturing process that will cause a near term serious health issue?
7)There's something wrong with the manufacturing process that will cause a term serious health issue later??

I honestly want to understand if there's a rational basis for the fear - but then again I know sometimes doesn't need to be rational to be real.

that’s with anything that may cause me pain or sickness. like, despite the joy of birthing a child, I never did it again because of the pain. with covid... it’s more likely a combination of 1 and 2. If I never had to leave the house again or wear masks for the rest of life, I’m totally fine with it.

now when I analysis my crazy lol...it’s crazy! because once in pain, I’ll take damn near anything if it takes away the pain.

but, manufacturing, being implanted with chips, being black...ain’t got nothing to do with it.

good question. I hope it makes sense...

Talked to him yesterday and he said he felt fine. Going to follow-up tonight.

I agree.

In as little as 4 weeks I could be 95% less likely to catch it. So gatherings with friends who are also vaccinated can be more normal.

And maybe things get back to 80% normal in the next few months as community spread is slowed by vaccination.

But I could go to Target or Vons without the worry. Just continue to wear a mask, stay away from folks and hope more and more folks get vaccinated.

Why is that so hard to comprehend.

Sounds like systemic issues are the root not some rushed VACCINE that has no true research on it's long term effects.

THEN the noodle racist megalomaniacs have a nerve to say the BLACK PEOPLE and indigenous folk should take it first. When has this nation EVER in it's 250 year history done anything to benefit black and indigenous people first?

Are yall slow or are yall dumb?

Refusing to get the vaccine isn’t going to address the disparate health outcomes brought forth by institutional racism. It’s simply going to make it easier to die.

You not making any sense.

We can look at all the countries where African people do not live under overt eurasian oppression and they don't have the same issues but in BRAZIL and THE USA we see the SAME conditions and it's an aside?

STAPH.

Then you want to omit the aside of how the US healthcare system has experimented on African people for over a century?

And lets not get into the fact that their system says it takes 7 years AT LEAST to come up with a viable vaccine and you want to take an experimental one made in 7 months?

I'm with you. The way that the healthcare industry, politicians, and the media have been pushing for Black folks to be first in line for the vaccine hasn't been sitting right with me. No one ever gives a crap about our issues any other time and whenever they have acted like they were concerned, it was always some kind of finesse that benefitted them and screwed us over.

I would be surprised that so many on here are going along with this bullcrap but this is OKP and from what I can tell, not much has changed.

No one is denying the racist history of America‘s medical system. This is not an experiment on black people. This is the vaccine for everyone. You’re basically saying don’t put the fire out because the fire was caused by faulty wiring. Put the goddamn fire out first. We can address the wiring later.

As for what you were saying about it taking seven years to create a vaccine, you have no idea what you were talking about. They came up with an H1N1 vaccine in like five months, and that is included in every flu shot now.

I’m not a scientist, but I’m married to an MD with a phD in microbiology and immunology who happens to be immunology division chief at a major university hospital system. I’m going to trust what she tells me about the vaccine. She has no motive other than keeping her family alive.

No one said this vaccine was made for Black folks only. The faulty false equivalency of community A is impacted most more so than community B means they should get the vaccine first and ignore all environmental and outside impacting circumstances that may make them more susceptible such as AH RACISM, purposely created food shortages, low wage earning working conditions etc etc etc yea just throw a vaccine with NO LONG TERM RESEARCH RESULTS yea.

I dont care if your wife was the top immunologists at the CDC none of these people have shown the studies and effectiveness of this vaccine.

In response to Reply # 0

Much like many of the other one treatment regimen vaccines, it packs a punch.
As my antibodies built up I had similar symptoms to when I had Covid.
-old injuries that bother me constantly being acutely sore
-fatigue
-body aches that progressed to my entire body after 11pm to about 2am
-the site where I got the shot got extremely sore and sensitive to the touch, from about the first day no feeling, 2nd day, a little sore, 3rd day during the body aches, couldn’t even lift my arm past my shoulders like John MCain.

I know it’s not live virus, but my immune systems reaction in just 2-3 days, was intense.
The pain and discomfort was at a 4 or 5.

When I had Covid in March, the pain and discomfort went from a 7 to a 8-9 for 2 weeks straight, with 2 specific overnight experiences being a 10.

Covid-19 is such a fucking monster that it can just be a 1-2 for some people, and be a 9-10 for others and even lead to death in some cases. 1 in a 1,000 in fact.

I’m glad I got the vaccine and I hope a lot more people do. But if you have allergies to medication. DO NOT GET THE VACCINE WITHOUT CONSULTING YOUR PHYSICIAN. And only go ahead with it if you’re in a clinical/hospital setting.

2nd shot in 3 more weeks and I know/hope it’ll be easier.

As soon as I saw an article about the new "British" strain possibly being found in other countries, I pretty much concluded it was everywhere already, just like the original virus a year ago.

Three times though, damn.. Know anything about the severity of their symptoms over the course of their three bouts? Should become less severe, right?

also the vaccine doesn't prevent you from getting it, but blocks the symptoms so you don't become ill if you do get it. however, you can still spread it. so masks will be around for a bit.

i guess that data's not in yet but i wonder if the vaccine in any way mirrors how bad you either had or would have had it.

so if you were or would have been mostly asymptomatic, the vaccine won't hit you hard, and vice versa?

I've talked to around 30 of my colleagues who have gotten the vaccine and none have had as rough as a time as you have had. (Most got Pfizer, but at least 5 got Moderna.)

One person had "ringing in her ears' for about 18 hours. (She's a legit weirdo though, she claims to have had COVID twice already, but she only had one positive test.)

About 2/3 had some degree of soreness in their arm.

About 1/3 had slight chills that went away within a day.

I know that 2 of the people have had severe allergic reactions to previous vaccines - one was caused by an interaction with a medication she was taking, the other was spontaneous. Neither of them had any significant reaction or pain to this vaccine (both got Pfizer.)

I'm the only one who admitted to diarrhea. I also had some muscle aches - very minor and possibly unrelated.

I hope your second shot is less painful.

lol

it sucks that the vaccine causes allergic reactions though

it's really making it important for everyone else to get vaccinated, but some folks just won't

Is the doctor or facility that gave you the vaccine aware of what you went through? I would hope so since everything involving COVID-19 is so brand new, including the vaccine.

It's important for stuff like this to get documented in more places than this dying message board.

2 people who got Moderna had side effects and one missed 2 days of work.

They weren't much more specific - but it happened.

The one I talked to said she'd take it again, that the side effects were like a cold/flu.

Best swipe:
If anything, the 95 percent number understates the effectiveness, because it counts anyone who came down with a mild case of Covid-19 as a failure. But turning Covid into a typical flu — as the vaccines evidently did for most of the remaining 5 percent — is actually a success. Of the 32,000 people who received the Moderna or Pfizer vaccine in a research trial, do you want to guess how many contracted a severe Covid case? One.

See: https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2020/11/absolutely-remarkable-no-one-who-got-modernas-vaccine-trial-developed-severe-covid-19
---

Full article
Good morning. We explain why the vaccine news is better than you may think.

Early in the pandemic, many health experts — in the U.S. and around the world — decided that the public could not be trusted to hear the truth about masks. Instead, the experts spread a misleading message, discouraging the use of masks.

Their motivation was mostly good. It sprung from a concern that people would rush to buy high-grade medical masks, leaving too few for doctors and nurses. The experts were also unsure how much ordinary masks would help.

But the message was still a mistake.

It confused people. (If masks weren’t effective, why did doctors and nurses need them?) It delayed the widespread use of masks (even though there was good reason to believe they could help). And it damaged the credibility of public health experts.

“When people feel as though they may not be getting the full truth from the authorities, snake-oil sellers and price gougers have an easier time,” the sociologist Zeynep Tufekci wrote early last year.

Now a version of the mask story is repeating itself — this time involving the vaccines. Once again, the experts don’t seem to trust the public to hear the full truth.

This issue is important and complex enough that I’m going to make today’s newsletter a bit longer than usual. If you still have questions, don’t hesitate to email me at themorning@nytimes.com.

‘Ridiculously encouraging’
Right now, public discussion of the vaccines is full of warnings about their limitations: They’re not 100 percent effective. Even vaccinated people may be able to spread the virus. And people shouldn’t change their behavior once they get their shots.

These warnings have a basis in truth, just as it’s true that masks are imperfect. But the sum total of the warnings is misleading, as I heard from multiple doctors and epidemiologists last week.

“It’s driving me a little bit crazy,” Dr. Ashish Jha, dean of the Brown School of Public Health, told me.

“We’re underselling the vaccine,” Dr. Aaron Richterman, an infectious-disease specialist at the University of Pennsylvania, said.

“It’s going to save your life — that’s where the emphasis has to be right now,” Dr. Peter Hotez of the Baylor College of Medicine said.

The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines are “essentially 100 percent effective against serious disease,” Dr. Paul Offit, the director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, said. “It’s ridiculously encouraging.”

The details
Here’s my best attempt at summarizing what we know:

The Moderna and Pfizer vaccines — the only two approved in the U.S. — are among the best vaccines ever created, with effectiveness rates of about 95 percent after two doses. That’s on par with the vaccines for chickenpox and measles. And a vaccine doesn’t even need to be so effective to reduce cases sharply and crush a pandemic.

One.

Although no rigorous study has yet analyzed whether vaccinated people can spread the virus, it would be surprising if they did. “If there is an example of a vaccine in widespread clinical use that has this selective effect — prevents disease but not infection — I can’t think of one!” Dr. Paul Sax of Harvard has written in The New England Journal of Medicine. (And, no, exclamation points are not common in medical journals.) On Twitter, Dr. Monica Gandhi of the University of California, San Francisco, argued: “Please be assured that YOU ARE SAFE after vaccine from what matters — disease and spreading.”

The risks for vaccinated people are still not zero, because almost nothing in the real world is zero risk. A tiny percentage of people may have allergic reactions. And I’ll be eager to see what the studies on post-vaccination spread eventually show. But the evidence so far suggests that the vaccines are akin to a cure.

Offit told me we should be greeting them with the same enthusiasm that greeted the polio vaccine: “It should be this rallying cry.”

The costs of negativity
Why are many experts conveying a more negative message?

Again, their motivations are mostly good. As academic researchers, they are instinctively cautious, prone to emphasizing any uncertainty. Many may also be nervous that vaccinated people will stop wearing masks and social distancing, which in turn could cause unvaccinated people to stop as well. If that happens, deaths would soar even higher.

But the best way to persuade people to behave safely usually involves telling them the truth. “Not being completely open because you want to achieve some sort of behavioral public health goal — people will see through that eventually,” Richterman said. The current approach also feeds anti-vaccine skepticism and conspiracy theories.

After asking Richterman and others what a better public message might sound like, I was left thinking about something like this:

We should immediately be more aggressive about mask-wearing and social distancing because of the new virus variants. We should vaccinate people as rapidly as possible — which will require approving other Covid vaccines when the data justifies it.

People who have received both of their vaccine shots, and have waited until they take effect, will be able to do things that unvaccinated people cannot — like having meals together and hugging their grandchildren. But until the pandemic is defeated, all Americans should wear masks in public, help unvaccinated people stay safe and contribute to a shared national project of saving every possible life.

Signed up for the novavax trial last week, got an appointment scheduled next Thursday. 66% chance of vaccine, 33% chance of placebo. I’ll know in 4 weeks when they do the second dose. The way I figure, wasn’t gonna be able to get any shot within the next 4 weeks let alone 1. Might as well try.

I know it will be hard to capture pre-COVID life since vaccine isn't 100% effective and obviously even with the vaccine you still have to wear masks and stuff but I am so over being at home since March 2020 and want part of my life back.

Can't wait to get it.

I'm in DC though and I know high risk folks are next on the list but I don't even think we have enough for the current health care workers so I know it might be a bit of a wait but I'm checking the site daily to see when I'm up.

i work in higher ed and my university sent me an email saying i was eligible to get it. i don't understand why because i am not an educator or over 65, which were supposed to be next. no one in my dept got the email and after meeting with the assoc dean today, she thinks i was the first one in the college to receive it. was it cause i'm black?!? i use another hospital for all of my healthcare so my school has no idea if i have preexisting conditions.

overall i feel very tired. i took a nap during the day and still feel exhausted. my arm is starting to feel sore.

The vaccine news continues to be better than many people realize.

https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/01/briefing/vaccination-myanmar-coup-rochester-police.html

Long article, a few small swipes:

Here’s the key fact: All five vaccines with public results have eliminated Covid-19 deaths. They have also drastically reduced hospitalizations. “They’re all good trial results,” Caitlin Rivers, an epidemiologist at Johns Hopkins University, told me. “It’s great news.”

The data
By those measures, all five of the vaccines — from Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Novavax and Johnson & Johnson — look extremely good. Of the roughly 75,000 people who have received one of the five in a research trial, not a single person has died from Covid, and only a few people appear to have been hospitalized. None have remained hospitalized 28 days after receiving a shot.

To put that in perspective, it helps to think about what Covid has done so far to a representative group of 75,000 American adults: It has killed roughly 150 of them and sent several hundred more to the hospital. The vaccines reduce those numbers to zero and nearly zero, based on the research trials.

In response to Reply # 217

Is some dystopian bullshit.

We knew when it started kids are often asymptomatic. Like, that's been known.

My kids school (mine online, most other kids in person though) keeps celebrating that the school has hardly any cases. But they don't report teacher cases...and they certainly don't consider cases in the community.

Also there is a lot of incentive for people to not have their kids tested when they are showing sypmtoms.

If you HAVE to work, you can't have your kid out for 10 days.

Or, if you are a selfish asshole, you don't want your kid home for 10 days.

Etc.

The "reopen schools/keep schools open" requires you to not give a fuck about teachers, forget kids are asymptomatic, refuse to note the correlation between schools opening and increased community cases, plus trust all of these assholes to get their kids tested.

Nah.

Around 50% and 1 to 2% as likely as adults, respectively (if I'm reading correctly).

https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamapediatrics/fullarticle/2771181

https://www.eurosurveillance.org/content/10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2020.26.1.2002011#abstract_content

More research is needed for a more accurate picture, and obviously the risk isn't 0. If base transmission rates are already high, it can still be a risky proposition. Distancing measures and testing protocols will be necessary to further reduce the risk out outbreaks.

My country is set to reopen schools in a week, since there's little evidence that it'll significantly impact infection numbers, and an increasing amount of evidence that lockdowns have a pretty terrible effect on many children. Increased domestic violence, falling behind on learning, depression, etc. Predictably, effects are worse for children from poor households or those with a history of domestic problems.

I understand that people are hesitant, and I'm not saying that every school should just reopen, but I do think the benefits of reopening outweigh the risks in many areas.

In response to Reply # 225

Children in particular can suffer from lack of contact with their peers and the daily structure (or refuge) provided by school and daycare.

I'm largely supportive of the measures taken in my country, which are far more significant than in most US states. I even think that our government has been pussyfooting around on many of them, allowing numbers to balloon instead of being proactive and possibly saving more lives and shortening the necessary duration of the restrictions.

But both the social and economic costs of the lockdowns are significant, and it remains to be seen whether the end result is worth it, especially considering our sometimes half-assed approach.

It's easy to paint this as lazy arguments by lazy parents (I don't have children btw), but the reality is very complex and pretending that the solution to this crisis is obvious or simple is potentially harmful in itself, because it allows bad faith actors to prey on people with valid concerns that are ignored by the government and mainstream society. That's part of the driving force behind the riots we saw in my country when an evening curfew was imposed recently.

Not because I'm just hypothesizing all willy-nilly to rationalize some intuitive dislike for lockdowns, as you seem to be suggesting.

I have several sources that say domestic violence is on the rise, that educational gaps between different groups of children are widening and that mental disorders appear to be more frequent among them, but they're all in Dutch so it's pointless to share them here.

I would look for sources that are more relevant to your particular environment, but I don't know where you live exactly and honestly I don't think it's my responsibility to do so. Also I'm getting the feeling you're not actually interested in finding out.

You also know that I'm not even saying that these effects are solely due to lockdown.

You should also know that it's well established science that children function better if they can go to school, interact with their peers and aren't cooped up with their abusive parents all day. Or maybe you just don't give a shit.

I'm not going to entertain your completely disingenuous offer to pay me to do your thinking for you any further. Instead I'll just tell you to believe what you want and find someone else to have bad faith arguments with.

also, most(?) kids (I hope) don't have parents who are so abusive that simply being around them is worse than not.

I would've paid if you could find the evidence to support your claim. not a mill because I don't have it like that, but a lil bit.

being correct isn't the same as arguing in bad faith.

I don't think you can prove these numbers get better by sending kids to school in a pandemic.

At least according to an article on a very recent study done in a Dutch municipality that recently saw an outbreak. The outbreak started in a school, so the figures might be distorted a bit. Unfortunately I can't find a link to any research paper, but it's reported on the website of the hospital involved in the research, so should be legit.

Wednesday today and no ill effects or reactions. Lots of people say the second shot kicked their ass but all I have so far is a sore arm.

I got my first one on Saturday, have the followup on the 28th. Folks talking about their terrible reaction to the second dose was starting to wear on me a bit as I am a giant coward.

Good to know that's not universal. I'm prepared for a terrible 24-48 hours, but it'd be a nice bonus if that didn't happen.

but overall it wasn't crazy bad. It's tough to tell the difference between regular life fatigue and a side effect sometimes, so that may have been part of the equation, but it wasn't terrible by any means.

My old parents got it too, and they slowed down for a day or so, but again, not terrible.

but I have to think it's entirely possible the Moderna vaccine could affect folks differently compared to the Pfizer vaccine. Kinda sucks folks aren't able to pick and choose in that regard, but I don't know if there's enough info out in terms of which vaccine has more side effects than the other.

the variance in responses among people who I know had the same vaccine, and even with other vaccines, you just don't quite know

Other than a soreness at the spot of the shot, no ill effects so far. I hope there will be enough of the Pfizer vaccine for NYC when the three week interim is over for the second shot. I've read in the past day or two that Cuomo reached a deal with the Federal gov't to get increased vaccine shipments going forward, so that should prove to be good news for me at least.

That means I work with 24.9999% fools and .01% people with actual medical problems. (We've had the vaccine available for 2 months now.)

Maybe I should sell gluten-free items as a side hustle?

Caught the director of the NIH's interview on Axios...and it didn't really hit me until he said it

We developed 3 vaccines with +90% effectiveness in under a year to combat a new virus

He said...'we would have been happy with 50%...'

+90% is just ridiculous...AND...no one receiving the vaccine has died or even required hospitilization

Those 2 stats are just bonkers.

We can wrap up all of the awards right now
Person of the year; vaccine
Nobel peace prize; vaccine
etc...

...and that J&J jawn is going to bring it all the way home...
