"Trump Election Lawsuit and other craziness thread here"
Sun Nov-08-20 04:21 PM by handle

It's 11/08/2020 and Trump has not conceded.

Senator Lindsey Graham and Senator Ted Cruise both just did the Sunday shows.

how many serious political journalists forego the opportunity to be embedded within the current administration just so they can continue to write gossip/puff pieces about the people who just got voted out?

There's a few different versions of them, all ending with people packing their bags for Hawaii, Mexico, or some other place that makes no sense at all.

It's been getting harder to distinguish satire thanks to Trump's base perfecting the art of petulant stupidity.

If they still feel beholden to Trump once he is out of office because he can sink them in their homestate, the party is done.

If Trump forms his own party and takes GOP votes, then the party is done.

Seems like the only route for survival of the party is successfully burying him and making the electorate turn on him.

In response to Reply # 15

and this is more about their efforts to reform mail-in voting and ensure Republican competitiveness in presidential contests moving forward. But it ain't the mail-in voting that will doom them, it's the emerging demographic landscape and the fact that the millennials will demonstrably overwhelm the baby-boomers in presidential contests moving forward.

That said, there are some instances where people who have been dead for 20 years appear to have registered and voted via mail-in ballot - but this likely numbers in the dozens which doesn't have any substantive impact on any contest. But I'm for rooting that out and identifying where the voting system is vulnerable - so if they can present evidence and make a case in court that shines light on where the abuses are taking place - great. If they can't? They need to stfu.

repub election officials really hate when repubs cry voter fraud because they know that if things really got examined/investigated then itd likely backfire and uncover the extent of repub efforts at voter suppression.

repubs in state legislatures actually attacked repub secretaries of states in places like ky and ia for making voting more accessible to people during a pandemic.

and thats what this attack in georgia is really about. these 2 senators are scared of the upcoming runoff elections in a red state that just went blue. so now they wanna boot the repub sos and install a new sos who is gonna make voting harder than ga voter suppression has already made it.

thought i was finally gonna be getting some sleep for a while. especially after it seemed like everyone had started accepting the results when all the news channels started calling the election for biden on saturday.

but the more apparent the biden win becomes and the higher his win margin goes up in states and nationally...the more repubs and parts of their organized apparatus are starting to double down on trump refusing to concede. theyre even attacking other republicans and fox news because of it.

some people think its a cynical ploy to keep the base fired up for the georgia elections but i think the mf just aint leaving willingly. like everyone has been predicting for a while now.

we need to prepare for that possibility and i dont even know how you physically depose an american president who doesnt respect the peaceful transfer of power. they have armed resistance and military coups in other countries over shit like this. but trump has law enforcement on his side and just installed a probable lackey as secretary of defense.

How many low information Facebook rednecks are bound to just sit the fuck out in January if they think its all rigged?

If the GOP spends the next 2-3 months saying elections are rigged...all it would take is a handful of their base to lose faith in the process and stay the fuck home.

It doesn't seem like the smartest play, and...the GOP are a lot of things...they aren't stupid.

I think they are going for it man. If this all hinged on one state, I'd be scared as fuck right now.

I think the fact that we are talking about multiple states makes me rest *a little* easier.

The other thing...how do you have any GOP unity after this? They are straight up attacking each other over this shit.

So...not only are the willing to burn the country down, but their own party? To keep their voters pissed? To raise money?

Nah. They could rdo that off court packing, socialism, on demand abortions, tax-payer funded gender reassignment surgery, etc. They've done it for years.

This also isn't just a few 2024 hopefuls trying not to piss off Trump's base.

Moscow Mitch, Barr, etc...seems like they are going for it.

It would be like issuing a memo to authorize the Postal Service to deliver mail, wouldn't it?

I'm not trying to downplay this, cuz I hate all of this shit.

Seems to me the game is to create enough chaos and uncertainty to give Electors some sort of reasoning to be faithless or whatever.

And that would probably go to the SC, assuming Joe doesn't get 270 electors.

Why do Republicans hate everything and everyone so much that they can't stomach dealing with JOE BIDEN for four years? With GOP senate?

Like really, why is the idea of that THAT bad that they'd rather burn everything down??

I've seen people say the text of Barr's memo is benign. Perhaps that's true for the text, but (a) the timing is obviously purely partisan and (b) the director of the Election Crimes Branch would know if it's benign or not—and he just resigned over what he called the "new policy."

&

https://twitter.com/ssamcham/status/1326002547807711232

Barr's memo is not remotely benign if you speak DOJ. He's saying the traditional rule against actions that could interfere with ongoing election certification is wrong, because it's quite possible someone is stealing the election from Trump.

ive come to that conclusion.

this election got me back into watching cable news every day (prolly cuz its easier to digest after trump lost). but some of these tv personalities are so fucking delusional.

they really think its solely joe bidens responsibility to unite a country where an entire party already thinks his win is fraudulent.

and they act like donald trump and repub leadership are just gonna come to their senses one day and accept defeat gracefully. like theyve ever done anything but trash democracy and poison the political climate of this country over the last several years (really before trump).

people are still tryna convince us that trump isnt gonna be that bad after an entire 1st term of him being that bad.

Trump is averaging 58.7% of incoming batches now, he needs 63.8% to flip it back. Depending on the districts left to be counted, that could happen. Does anyone have an idea of the demographics of what's left in AZ?

I'm getting my numbers from this lovely spreadsheet btw, many thanks to the okp that posted it a while ago: https://alex.github.io/nyt-2020-election-scraper/battleground-state-changes.html

it would be a waste of my time. there are layers of systems that go
into casting a vote. i want an open and efficient way to publicly
verify that a vote is legitimate and not tampered with. the current
system does not allow for that. you're having to trust all of these
systems and the people that uphold it.

When they won in 2016 how many places did they scream about for voter fraud?

Only place I remember was in MC and that was because a GOP member went to the police and told them how the Dems were committing fraud and turns out the only reason he knew the details is because HE was committing fraud.

Don’t tell us it’s a waste of your time to find out how the system works when you are free to volunteer and witness it in person.

he was asked about a smooth transition to Biden to which he replied w/ that quote which reads TO ME: no, the transition ain't gonna be smooth cuz Trump lost.

AND, so, far, the trasition hasn't been smooth.

i'm not sure that was him saying "we're not turning over the office" but obviously EVERYONE needs to be paying attention to the bullshit.

These are serious matters of national security from an international perspective immediately and a domestic perspective now and long term

Every day they fan the flames it puts our elected officials in danger as well as fellow citizens.

People didn't buy ammo and join militia cells because they heard trolling. They honestly believe this shit.

And that's the best case scenario. That's how bad that "joke" is, if it is one.

You're engaging in denialism.

National Security heads being fired. The person overseeing election crime resigning in protest. The VP "going on vacation", the Senate refusing to acknowledge the election ... the GSA head not certifying the transition, which is leading to the Biden team unable to use government resources or to get the Presidential Debriefings that they're entitled too.

Now you have the Secretary of State who in response to a smooth transition makes a grossly inappropriate comment ... then transitions to the "the process" about electors. The same process that Donald Trump has been trying to corrupt for months.

This is from last month:
https://www.salon.com/2020/10/06/trump-campaign-discussing-plans-to-appoint-its-own-state-electors-no-matter-the-results-report/

All of the warning signs of an attempted slow coup are taking place
But because people chuckle we shouldn't take them seriously?
There's never been a depth the GOP won't sink to for political gain, Nixon prolonged the Vietnam war
https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/nixon-prolonged-vietnam-war-for-political-gainand-johnson-knew-about-it-newly-unclassified-tapes-suggest-3595441/

And they've only gotten more blatant about shattering democratic institutions sense.
Garland, Kavanaugh, Barrett, COVID, all of nepotism laws broken .... we're simply not safe right now.

If we look for news minute by minute we will make big deals out of events that don't really matter.

I don't think any of this stuff we had heard so far matters.

I expect Trump to run to court and try to get the Supreme Court to intervene. There is no basis to think they will.

I am not worried yet about electors overturning the results of the vote.

I don't see real news that suggests the making of a coup.

I think the left can be guilty of at times seeing conspiracies that aren't there similar to the right.

If you don't see that aspects of our democracy we took for granted just 4 years ago have been slowly undermined at every turn, you may need to revisit some of those

there's been some scary moments, and we have been seeing almost daily.

We thought the election could get us back to normal, but now it looks like there's no way it's going to happen normally

That's when I was worried about an election being stolen.

The thing that people are worried about now is pure insurrection/treason punishable by death. These punks ain't got it in them to lead that.

There will be some individuals in government that will require a court order to do there job but that concerns me less than Timothy McVeigh style attacks.

Esper broke with Trump on:

-- Whether to use the Insurrection Act and put active-duty troops on America's streets

-- Whether to ban the use of the Confederate flag on U.S. installations

-- Whether to rename bases that recognize Confederate officers

https://www.militarytimes.com/news/your-military/2020/11/09/exclusive-esper-on-his-way-out-says-he-was-no-yes-man/

Exclusive: Esper, on his way out, says he was no yes man

Esper cited his refusal to agree with invoking the Insurrection Act as a pivotal point in his relationship w Trump.

Trump wanted to invoke the Act to use US military forces against Americans on American soil in response to protests.

ugghhh. we're gonna have a civil war.

i gave the GOP too much credit. i actually thought that even the loons who've sided w/ Trump (McConnell, Graham, etc) would come back to reality somewhat once he lost as they don't have to "fear" him anymore, but boy was i wrong.

they'd just as soon watch it all burn instead.

I recommend this especially to get a sense of what Trump team is trying, why it is failing and why (hopefully) it will continue to fail.

1. Shout out to them for hosting this.
2. It's got some typical call issues mostly during the Q/A portion.

Out on the course he's talking way madder shit to his boys than he'd do a building where civil servants who observe the law are located.

Also that 99% of the Republican party isn't speaking out against this it means that they are for this and support this.

There's at least at 50% chance they will actually try a coup.

He got impeached for the dumbest fucking shakedown in the history of dumb fucking shakedowns, but he's planning a secret coup?

This a lazy grifter and a huckster who's in it for the money and name recognition. Planning and executing a coup takes a lot more than that. Like you said, he's playing golf right now.

What the most likely is that this is him positioning his brand moving forward. That he "accepts" are acknowledges the votes without ever actually calling up Biden and conceding. Then he launches TrumpTV and he gets someone to ghostwrite a book under the false premise that he was cheated during the election. And you can read/listen/watch all about it for the low introductory rate of $49.95!

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick is offering $1 million in rewards to people who can help uncover voter fraud in the presidential election.

Patrick on Tuesday said in a press release to the media that any person who comes forward with evidence that leads to an arrest and final conviction of voter fraud will be paid a minimum of $25,000. The money would come from Patrick’s campaign funds.

Lt Gov John Fetterman PA answers

Hey, Governor Patrick- it’s your counterpart in Pennsylvania.

I’d like to collect your handsome reward for reporting voter fraud.

I got a dude in Forty Fort, PA who tried to have his dead mom vote for Trump.

I’d like mine in Sheetz gift cards pls.

Georgia announces a hand recount of the state’s presidential election results

GA Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger on the presidential election: "With a margin being so close, it will require a full by-hand recount in each county. This will help build confidence. It will be an audit, a recount, and a recanvass all at once. It will be a heavy lift"

So it's a fully hand recount, not being paid for by Trump but by each county.

RATFUCKING BEGINS NOW.

Let's say they recount and right now Biden is ahead by 14,000.

If that goes to down 12,000 (which would be crazy, it won't change the votes by that much) then Trump and all of them will say "See, big time fraudy - so we claim we won."

They'll use that to pressure other states.

The game is to discredit the election and the government. They are burning it to the ground for power.

-OR- They will cheat the recount and somehow find 14,000+1 votes for Trump - whcih has NEVER EVER NEVER EVER EVER happened EVER.

Note: The biggest swing came in Florida’s 2000 presidential election recount, when Al Gore cut 1,247 votes off George W. Bush’s lead, ultimately not enough to flip the state to his column.

On Friday, November 24, the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to review the Florida Supreme Court’s ruling in favor of Gore. Two days later, on Sunday night, Katherine Harris certified the vote tally in Florida, and Bush’s lead stood at 537 votes. Some recount results were excluded—the results from Palm Beach County had arrived two hours late. Miami-Dade had stopped its recount

fear a recount.

If you are comfortable that there is no way Dems stole the vote to give Biden the win, you also got to be comfortable that a recount won't swing the vote by 14K votes. shit even 2000 votes would be unprecedented. I think I read somewhere the average change is something like 200 votes?

But:
1)ANY change - even by 1 vote will be used by Trump to claim fraud.

2)I don't trust the Republican secretary of state doing this after being bullied by Trump, the two senators in the state and the republican party.

I think the recount could be cheated, but we'll see.

But recounts shouldn't be done unless the margin is so small as to allow a change in the outcome or if there is evidence of wrong doing.

This seems purely political and in BAD FAITH.

after years of russiagate and all the non-sensical "WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE" stuff pre-covid...

did anyone really think Trump wasn't going to fight in anyway he can after this election? and it was very close. this isn't like Mondale demanding a recount in a blow out lol.

some notes;

The dems fixed their own primaries, we know that, its been confirmed by dems themselves. I mean they really made the republicans look like an honest party by having trump steam roll all their candidates and come out on top over the establishment. but the dem's couldn't trust the people choosing Sanders over retread Hillary or any of the better options this year like IDK anyone but old lying ass Joe and Officer Harris...

The dems also played 3-d chess by acting like going to the polls was going to be a super spreader event and urging people to mail in ballots. Then almost IMMEDIATELY shitting on the postal service saying they couldn't keep up and pointing the voter fraud/suppression finger early.

early on election day you heard about "300k missing ballots" when it looked like trump was up in key states. But how can you tell that? if you send out 100 mail in ballots and 50 people send them back, does that mean the other 50 are "missing" from the voting count? more built-in "gotchas" should something go wrong.

Here in connecticut, which is just blindly democrat, I love asking people what changed for them under trump and I get a lot of "we gotta get this clown out of here". like, ok but what changed?

The left was really quick to start pointing fingers at minority groups when it looked like Biden wasn't going to make it. that shit bothers me, its hypocritical as fuck and people need to be called out on it. White people too, even though no president has ever been elected without a BIG ASS CHUNK OF WHITE VOTES it was going to be white peoples fault if they lost. Only of course AFTER dragging black men, latinx, and all the other POC who voted for Trump.

I don't want this reply making ya'll assume i'm pro-trump because i'm not pro anything. our two party system has failed us and we're going to be stuck in this bullshit cat and mouse game for a long time. one party is stuck in the stone age and the other is just full of a bunch of silvery tongues liars. You cannot convince me otherwise and anyone who is hard R or hard D(pause?) always looks delusional or crazy to me. like Coke vs Pepsi who gives a fuck crazy.

idk just wanted to unload that here because if you say anything on twitter or in person people add you to lists apparently.

and I don't mean this election.
I mean when Democrats won the governorship in those states.

and what I fear about Biden's presidency is that we'll be in a situation where the GOP does similar things to him as their state-government counterparts did to Cooper and Evers.

Yes, I'm mad. Let's move on.

Making partisan structural changes to ensure GOP Minority Rule that is very hard to overcome.

I am just not super worried about stealing an election after 100K of votes have been counted.

We laugh at the conspiracy theorist saying the dems stole the election but sound too close to comfort to me complaining about the GOP conspiracy to steal this same election.

I think there's def dirt on Graham though. Whether its Trump or Russia or both. I used to chalk it up to a schoolyard bully dynamic an LG needing an alpha in his post McCain life, but he goes waaay too hard on Trump bootlicking for there not to be more to it.

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/donald-trump/rudy-giuliani-joins-trump-campaign-s-sputtering-legal-effort-pennsylvania-n1248008

The former New York City mayor appeared alongside a Harrisburg attorney and conservative talk radio host, Marc Scaringi, and attorney Linda Kerns. He signed on to join the legal team after most of Trump's other attorneys had withdrawn or petitioned to withdraw from the suit in the last few days.

It's the latest in the sputtering effort by Trump’s campaign to try and change the results of the 2020 election. Trump's team sought to delay Tuesday's scheduled hearing to accommodate for new counsel but U.S. District Judge Matthew Brann refused. Another hearing is slated for Thursday.

Court records indicate it is Giuliani's first time as a listed attorney in federal court since 1992. The mayor disputed this timeline in a text with NBC News, saying he'd argued a case in federal court "four or five years ago," but declined to offer additional details.

The judge is lowkey roasting him

He's getting $20k a day to do his Fox News routine in court. Most of what he talks about doesn't appear in the court filings. And the judge keeps reminding him of that.

Then Rudy gets confused.

*rinse, repeat*

It kind of feels like Trump put him out there as a scapegoat. In a couple of weeks we'll see a Trump tweet like: "I've never seen any one as dumb as Rudy. I would've have won in court if it wasn't for him"

167. "DHS cyber chief out after debunking Trump’s election claims"
In response to Reply # 0

https://www.politico.com/news/2020/11/17/trump-fires-dhs-cybersecurity-chief-who-led-election-defense-437174

President Donald Trump on Tuesday fired Christopher Krebs, the U.S. government’s top cybersecurity official, after he spent weeks contradicting the election-related conspiracy theories that Trump and his allies have promoted to deny the legitimacy of President-elect Joe Biden’s victory.

Krebs, the director of the Department of Homeland Security’s Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, oversaw the defense of the 2018 and 2020 elections, as well as the protection of federal computer networks and critical infrastructure facilities such as hospitals and power plants.

In tweets posted Tuesday evening, Trump claimed that a recent statement issued by Krebs' agency and several partners, which reassured Americans that the 2020 election had been conducted securely, "was highly inaccurate."

"There were massive improprieties and fraud — including dead people voting, Poll Watchers not allowed into polling locations, “glitches” in the voting machines which changed ... votes from Trump to Biden, late voting, and many more," Trump tweeted, though those claims are false. "Therefore, effective immediately, Chris Krebs has been terminated."

Krebs, one of the few Trump appointees with nearly universal bipartisan support, spent years navigating his new agency through DHS’s leadership turmoil and the administration’s political controversies. At the same time, he built relationships with fellow officials and private security experts to reform and promote the government’s cyber mission.

After rising to become the United States' de-facto cyber czar in 2018, he became a familiar presence at security conferences, where he discussed threats such as the ransomware epidemic and the risks of Chinese telecom companies such as Huawei. In an administration that constantly defied democratic norms, Krebs became the public face of the government’s election security efforts, highlighting the collaboration between national security officials and election supervisors.

But Krebs’ commitment to debunking misinformation about the presidential election finally proved too much for the White House, which pushed him out as part of a government-wide purge that has also hit the top ranks of the Pentagon.
A focus on election security

Krebs’ most significant legacy is the nation’s increasingly robust election infrastructure. The technology and processes that power U.S. elections are far more secure than they were in 2016, when Russian hackers thrust the creaking machinery of American democracy into the spotlight. But getting to this point was an uphill battle at times.

“The success of the 2020 General Election — in the face of disinformation campaigns and cyber threats from foreign adversaries — is owed in large part to CISA under Chris Krebs’ leadership,” California Secretary of State Alex Padilla said in a statement. He called Krebs “an accessible, reliable partner for elections officials across the country, and across party lines, as we have fortified our cyber defenses since 2016.”

The Obama administration’s belated approach to engaging election supervisors in 2016 left state and local officials skeptical of, or even hostile to, help from Washington. Improving this relationship couldn’t have been more important, as many states maintained insecure voter registration databases and many counties used electronic voting machines that lacked the paper trails necessary for reliable audits.

Krebs and his team launched a charm offensive to dispel rumors about federal takeovers. They pushed states to adopt paper ballots and post-election audits, which many began doing after Congress approved hundreds of millions of dollars in election security grants. CISA also offered states free cybersecurity services, including penetration testing, phishing simulations, vulnerability scanning and resilience assessments. All 50 states and many local jurisdictions joined a CISA-funded information sharing group and installed intrusion-detection sensors that help the agency analyze hackers’ activities.

Under Krebs, CISA paid particular attention to small local jurisdictions that often lacked any dedicated IT staff, launching a “Last Mile Initiative” in 2018 that helped states furnish custom cheat sheets for their county supervisors. Krebs also launched a Voter Registration Database Ransomware Initiative to help officials protect these key systems from extortion-focused malware.

Krebs also worked to improve relationships with the companies that sell election technology such as voting machines, electronic poll books and results-reporting websites. For years, these largely unregulated vendors have scorned security researchers’ attempts to study their products, used lawsuits to maintain quasi-monopolies and in some cases misled customers about the security of their products. Krebs encouraged the companies to mend fences with researchers and improve security practices.

Over time, these efforts paid off. CISA persuaded several voting-machine manufacturers to let the Energy Department’s Idaho National Laboratory test their products for vulnerabilities. In 2019, Krebs said such cooperation would have been “unheard of” two years earlier. In addition, all three major voting machine makers now operate vulnerability disclosure programs. While researchers and activists still have complaints, many of them acknowledge that the industry is trying to improve.

Kreb also encouraged companies such as Google and Microsoft to offer free support to campaigns and election officials, resulting in the increased adoption of techniques such as multi-factor authentication. In the final phase of the 2020 election, CISA launched a “Rumor Control” website to debunk election-related misinformation and partnered with other agencies to encourage trust in the system and correct viral falsehoods. Krebs argued that false alarms and reduced voter confidence could do far more damage than an actual cyberattack.
Full plate of other threats

The coronavirus pandemic offered another stress test of CISA’s partnerships with other agencies and the private sector. CISA offered cybersecurity help to health-care organizations developing vaccines as part of the Trump administration’s “Operation Warp Speed” initiative. The agency also worked with its British counterpart to warn about hackers exploiting the pandemic, and it partnered with the FBI to warn that Chinese hackers were targeting virus researchers.

Krebs also had to deal with the threat of ransomware, which mushroomed to become one of the biggest problems facing businesses, healthcare systems and local governments. In October, CISA, along with the FBI and the Department of Health and Human Services, began assisting hospitals in defending themselves against a massive ransomware campaign that one researcher described as “probably the most dangerous cyberattacks in the US to date.”

CISA also tackled problems including 5G security and threats to the industrial control systems found in facilities such as power plants. The agency launched a supply chain risk management task force to help companies protect the sprawling global web of producers and suppliers, and it produced a “National Critical Functions” list to help clarify policymakers’ thinking about the country’s biggest systemic weak points. To help CISA identify the operators of vulnerable infrastructure, Krebs pushed Congress to grant him the power to issue administrative subpoenas to internet service providers for basic customer data.

Krebs also leaned into CISA’s role as the cyber overseer for federal civilian agencies. Using CISA’s authority to issue “binding operational directives,” he ordered agencies to launch vulnerability disclosure programs, protect their most valuable digital assets and implement basic email and web security defenses. He also issued emergency orders requiring agencies to remedy emerging flaws.
Cybersecurity is ‘where it’s at’

Krebs joined the Trump administration in March 2017 after spending three years as a Microsoft lobbyist on cyber issues. He first served as a senior counselor to then-DHS Secretary John Kelly before becoming the assistant secretary for infrastructure protection. He concurrently served as the acting under secretary in charge of DHS’s cyber wing, the National Protection and Programs Directorate, until the Senate confirmed him to that job in June 2018.

Krebs’ position gained new importance in May 2018, when the White House eliminated the cybersecurity coordinator position inside the National Security Council, leaving the government without an official “cyber czar” and functionally throwing Krebs into that role. He embraced the responsibility, becoming a constant presence at cybersecurity conferences. He hobnobbed with tech executives on the sidelines of industry events, bantered with reporters after keynote speeches and inspired memes on social media about his socks and ties.

Two weeks after the 2018 midterms, Trump signed a bill that reorganized Krebs’ DHS division into CISA, handing the new agency director a major win and fulfilling a long-term goal of many cyber policy specialists.

“This will make us, I think, much more effective,” Trump said as he signed the bill. “Cyber is, to a large extent, where it’s at nowadays.”

The new agency made Krebs’ team more approachable to the private sector — he often joked about never again having to say NPPD’s clunky full name — and it quickly became a partner for companies that were hesitant to engage with other agencies but trusted Krebs.

As the de-facto cyber chief, Krebs had to manage relationships with an often fractious community of federal agencies, state and local partners, activist groups, independent researchers and security companies.

One of Krebs’ main tasks was to cut through years of mistrust between the hacker community and the government. At events such as the annual DEF CON conference in Las Vegas, Krebs urged public-spirited hackers to help the government find and fix flaws in U.S. computer systems. He acknowledged their skepticism but insisted that he was advocating for them inside the government.

To promote CISA’s work and demonstrate to outsiders that it wasn’t your average government agency, Krebs embraced humor and whimsy, running a “Star Wars”-themed recruiting campaign and explaining the threat of disinformation with a campaign about the controversial practice of putting pineapple on pizza.

As CISA grew, other agencies were also reorganizing their cyber missions. Krebs had to build ties with the Pentagon’s newly elevated U.S. Cyber Command and the NSA’s new Cybersecurity Directorate, the secretive spy agency’s first major attempt at public engagement. Cyber Command’s newly aggressive posture and the NSA’s insular culture were fundamentally at odds with CISA, which prioritized collaboration and information sharing. Krebs also had to coordinate with the FBI’s Cyber Division, which began trying to play a larger role in deterring hackers.
Leading amid the chaos

Looming over all of this was the leadership turmoil atop DHS, which experienced a succession of permanent and acting secretaries as the White House pushed the department to pursue harsher immigration policies. Krebs steered CISA away from the political controversies, but policy specialists wondered how the agency was suffering from a lack of stable DHS leadership.

A reminder of Krebs’ precarious position arrived in August, when the Government Accountability Office declared acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf’s appointment to be invalid and determined that, under the department’s succession plan, Krebs should have become the acting secretary when Kirstjen Nielsen resigned in April 2019. The crisis illustrated the peculiar situation in which the scrupulously apolitical Krebs found himself.

Through it all, Krebs garnered rare bipartisan acclaim. In an administration that was almost singularly focused on catering to Trump’s whims and implementing a right-wing agenda, Krebs was one of the few agency chiefs whom Democrats and Republicans alike regarded as a nonpartisan figure just trying to do good work.

Rep. Jim Langevin (D-R.I.) recently told POLITICO that he wanted Biden to keep Krebs in place after he took office. When news broke on Thursday of Krebs’ likely ouster, he received support and praise from many Democratic lawmakers, including Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia, the ranking member on the Intelligence Committee; Sen. Maggie Hassan of New Hampshire, a member of the Homeland Security Committee; and Rep. Bennie Thompson of Mississippi, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee.

Krebs deflected questions about the tensions between his and Trump’s comments about election security, saying he was focused on his technical mission.

Distancing himself from Trump’s remarks protected Krebs for more than three years, but the presidential election pushed the CISA director’s relationship with the White House to the breaking point.

As Election Day neared, CISA launched the “Rumor Control” website to collect fact checks about common election misinformation. Krebs, who told reporters he wouldn’t directly correct Trump’s falsehoods, nonetheless stocked the page with information that debunked right-wing conspiracy theories. That continued after the election, as Trump and his allies — including several of Krebs’ fellow agency leaders — falsely alleged mass voter fraud to deny the legitimacy of Biden’s victory.

“The November 3rd election was the most secure in American history,” CISA and its election security partners said in a statement on Thursday, as rumors about Krebs’ fate swirled. ““While we know there are many unfounded claims and opportunities for misinformation about the process of our elections, we can assure you we have the utmost confidence in the security and integrity of our elections, and you should too.”

Krebs’ insistence on the sanctity of the process angered White House officials, who took particular umbrage when he dismissed a Republican conspiracy theory about a vote-flipping supercomputer as “nonsense.”

Several government officials expected Krebs to be fired after a POLITICO story published on Tuesday highlighted his pushback against conservatives’ election misinformation, a former U.S. official said.

As it turned out, Rumor Control was only the final straw. The White House’s personnel office “has wanted to fire Krebs for a while,” said a current U.S. official.

If he was worried, Krebs showed no sign in public. On Thursday afternoon, he told a federal advisory committee that CISA would “continue … to defend our democracy” during Georgia’s upcoming Senate runoff elections and beyond.

A few hours later, Krebs retweeted an election technology specialist’s warning against sharing “wild and baseless claims about voting machines, even if they're made by the president."

---

But hell, what do I know?

GOP members of Wayne County Board of Canvassers vote against certifying election results
Clara Hendrickson
Detroit Free Press

The two Republican members of the Wayne County Board of Canvassers cast an unprecedented vote Tuesday against certifying the county's November election results for the county's 43 jurisdictions, including Detroit, Michigan's largest voting jurisdiction.

Monica Palmer, the Republican chair of the committee said: "I believe that we do not have complete and accurate information on those poll books," referring to jurisdictions, including Detroit, that recorded unexplained discrepancies between the number of absentee ballots recorded as cast and the number of absentee ballots counted.

Jonathan Kinloch, the Democratic vice chair of the board, said: "Most of this is human error. ... It's not based on fraud."

All four members of the board unanimously supported the certification of the August primary election, which also saw unexplained discrepancies.

During the meeting, Palmer said she would be open to certifying the election results for some jurisdictions but not Detroit and others that recorded unexplained discrepancies. Public commenters accused the board's Republican members of disenfranchising hundreds of thousands of voters in refusing the certify the election.

Kinloch accused the Republican members of playing politics rather than fulfilling their legal obligation to certify the results. "I believe politics made its presence today," Kinloch said. "This is reckless and irresponsible action by this board," he added. Democratic board member Allen Wilson agreed. "I'm actually appalled to be sitting here today," he said.

The board is comprised of four members — two Democrats and two Republicans.

Just minutes after the Republican members voted against certifying the results, the Michigan Republican Party released a statement from Laura Cox, who chairs the state party.

"I am proud that, due to the efforts of the Michigan Republican Party, the Republican National Committee and the Trump Campaign, enough evidence of irregularities and potential voter fraud was uncovered resulting in the Wayne County Board of Canvassers refusing to certify their election results," Cox said.

Michigan Democratic Party chair Lavora Barnes called the vote "an outrageous display of partisan posturing." She added, "Monica Palmer and William Hartmann have chosen to tarnish their personal legacy by picking up the GOP banner of making allegations without any evidence. For the Republican members of the Wayne County Board of Canvassers to buy into conspiracy theories and completely disregard the will of the voters in Michigan is not only shameful but a complete dereliction of duties."

Palmer had an ethics complaint filed against her in October accusing her of a conflict of interest. The complaint accused Palmer of running a "dark-money PAC" to promote candidates for the Grosse Pointe Board of Education, an election she oversees, and called on her to step down from the board. The Wayne County Ethics Board will meet Wednesday to discuss the complaint against Palmer.

Tuesday was the final day the board could certify the county's election results. Having failed to certify the results, the board is now required to immediately deliver to the secretary of the Board of State Canvassers all election records so the state board can certify the results. Under state law, the board must certify the results within 10 days of receiving the records from the board of canvassers.

Legal challenges mounted in the wake of the election and brought increased attention to the audit and certification of the results undertaken by each county's board of canvassers, a process that typically unfolds relatively unnoticed. The Zoom call for the board of canvassers' meeting was initially limited to 100 participants, but was later expanded to accommodate more than 300 participants.

The meeting was called to order at 4:46 p.m. almost two hours late, as members waited on affidavits filed by individuals present at TCF Center, where Detroit's election workers processed and counted the absentee ballots cast by the city's voters.

Poll workers count absentee ballots for the city of Detroit at the TCF Center in downtown Detroit on Tuesday, November 3, 2020.
A request made to the Michigan Supreme Court Tuesday morning asking the court to stop the Wayne County Board of Canvassers from certifying the election results before its scheduled 3 p.m. meeting also created last-minute uncertainty. The court did not grant leave to appeal before the members of the board met.

Protesters with the Metro Detroit Action Council, a local community organization that focuses on economic and racial injustices, gathered outside the building where the board of canvassers met, demanding the board certify the election results.

Lonnie Scott, executive director of Progress Michigan, a progressive advocacy organization, also called on the Republican members of the board to certify the election earlier Tuesday.

"No canvassing board has ever refused to certify an election. Refusal to certify the results is just a partisan attempt to stretch out the process, feed Trump’s lies about our elections, and set up a right-wing power grab that ignores the will of the people," Scott said in a press release.

Wayne County’s unofficial election results, which were posted Nov. 5, showed former Vice-President Joe Biden received 587,074 votes — 67.99% of the votes cast for president in Wayne County — while President Donald Trump received 264,149, or 30.59%.

Trump has refused to concede the presidential contest to Biden, making unsubstantiated claims that the election was rife with fraud. Trump's campaign and Republican challengers have filed lawsuits across the country to contest the election.

Six Michigan lawsuits seeking to delay or stop the certification of the state's 16 electoral votes for Biden have focused on the three days Detroit's election workers processed and counted the absentee ballots cast by the city's voters at TCF Center. Lawsuits filed in the wake of the election have leveled allegations that thousands of invalid ballots were counted by Detroit election workers.

The lawsuits are based largely on Republican challengers' allegations that Detroit election workers counted ballots cast by ineligible voters, as well as ballots that arrived past the return deadline. Republican challengers also have claimed that they were singled out by election workers from reentering the counting hub when the room had reached capacity, though officials noted that challengers from all parties were prohibited from reentering because of capacity limits. The claims have so far been rejected in court.

Two of the lawsuits were dismissed by Wayne County Circuit Court Chief Judge Timothy Kenny. On Friday, Kenny dismissed a lawsuit filed by David Kallman on behalf of two Wayne County voters, writing in his opinion that the lawsuit presented an incorrect account of the events that took place at TCF. On Monday, Kallman asked the Michigan Court of Appeals to reverse the lower court's ruling. After a three-judge panel denied the request, Kallman asked the Michigan Supreme Court Tuesday morning to act immediately to stop the Wayne County Board of Canvassers from certifying the election results and order a separate audit of the election.

Republican members of board cite unexplained discrepancies
While auditing the August primary election results, the Wayne County Board of Canvassers found that in 363 of the city's 503 precincts — roughly 72% of Detroit's precincts — there was no explanation for small discrepancies between the number of absentee ballots recorded in the precinct's poll book as cast and the number of absentee ballots counted. This election, 94 of the city's 134 absent voter counting boards — roughly 70% of Detroit's absent voter counting boards — recorded unexplained discrepancies. But Detroit was not the only jurisdiction that reported unexplained discrepancies this election.

Under Michigan election law, a precinct that is not in “balance” is disqualified from participating in a recount, and the election results originally reported by the precinct stand as final.

Shortly after certifying the county's primary results, Kinloch told the Free Press that the board “saw no evidence of individuals voting who were not supposed to.” Instead, election officials pointed to voter records that were not consistently updated to reflect whether a voter had returned an absentee ballot, as well as ballots that were placed in the wrong precinct container as explanations for the discrepancies.

Speaking after the primary, Palmer told the Free Press that repeating the mistakes in November would spell disaster. “We cannot go into November repeating what happened in the primary. It absolutely cannot happen," she said.

On Aug. 18, the board passed a resolution asking the State Department of Elections to investigate Detroit's training for election workers staffing the absent voter counting boards tasked with processing and counting the absentee ballots cast by the city's voters. The resolution also called on Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson to appoint a monitor to supervise the city's election worker training and absent voter counting boards.

In early September, Benson announced she was partnering with Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey to ensure the integrity of the city’s absentee ballot tabulation. Former Michigan Bureau of Elections Director Chris Thomas was brought into the partnership to serve as a special advisor to Winfrey.

Palmer and Hartmann were not pleased with the result. During a back-and-forth between Palmer and Kinloch during the meeting, Kinloch told Palmer that pointing to the discrepancies in Detroit's August primary and noting similar mistakes were made in November, was "comparing apples and oranges" since the November election saw an unprecedented number of absentee ballots cast.

What happens next?
Certifying Wayne County's election results now falls to the Board of State Canvassers. The board has until Nov. 23 to certify Michigan’s statewide election results. Recount petitions for the presidential, Senate, U.S. House and State House seats must be filed with the Secretary of State within 48 hours after the board has certified the statewide results.

A change to Michigan’s recount process made after the 2016 presidential election requires candidates to prove they have a reasonable chance to win in order to initiate a recount. Biden won Michigan by a wide margin — more than 146,000 votes — the state's unofficial results show. Legal experts said they expect the State Board of Canvassers will meet the deadline for certifying the results of the presidential contest, despite pending lawsuits seeking to delay the process.

If legal disputes regarding the election are resolved by Dec. 8, the certified statewide results are free from any further legal challenge and Congress must accept them as final. Michigan's 16 presidential electors are scheduled to convene Dec. 14 to cast the state's Electoral College votes.

I wouldn’t even be mad if we did rig the election to save this country from these people.

Americans are the dumbest people on the planet. I think people still want to move here because they know they can jump the line of idiots and get some serious money selling anything to these fools.

I’m kind of mad at myself for not creating an “I hate Libtards” site to sell these fools stickers and hats.

Michigan's republican Senate majority leader said earlier that Biden won and a plan to use the legislature to overturn the results isn't going to happen.

Well, Trump is going to try to convince them.

They're going to try to cook something up.

Trump already used a phone call to get some people on the Wayne County election board to try to take back their election certification vote. Let's see what he can pull with this

Donald Trump’s oldest son, Donald Trump Jr., tested positive for coronavirus infection earlier this week and is isolating, according to three people familiar with the matter.

A spokesman for Trump Jr. said in a statement he is asymptomatic for Covid-19, the disease caused by the virus.

Trump Jr. adds to the dozens of people associated with the president who have been infected by the virus, including Trump himself. On Friday, Rudy Giuliani’s son Andrew Giuliani, who is a White House aide, announced on Twitter he had tested positive. In addition, an aide to Vice President Mike Pence, Hannah McInnis, tested positive earlier this month, according to two people familiar with the matter.

Several of Pence’s aides have been infected, including his press secretary and chief of staff. Pence himself has not.

but they obviously have no idea who the republican base is.

the people they choose to represent them keep getting worse and worse. and its scary to think about someone being worse than trump but that is undoubtedly who they will flock to.

people like tom cotton might not even be extreme enough for them. its more likely to be someone close to the marjorie taylor greenes and madison cawthorns of the world,

i honestly wouldnt be surprised if the next repub nom just promised to nuke blue states and declare all immigrants terrorists for not being born in the country.

This is good news.

But if the election hinged on 1 state, or even 2 with margins within 5,000 votes then I think they'd have done it.

Because, as deplorable as republicans are, this Trump base keeps showing that they're capable of lowering the bar to staggering depths.

So many of these people are doubling, tripling, and quadrupling down on their support, no matter what happens. They just keep shifting the goal post, twisting and turning to slightly different angles.

A complete lack of evidence means absolutely nothing.

While it's nice to watch this implode in a vacuum, this dogged tantrum of his may have undermined the integrity of the election process for several election cycles to come. I can't predict how that turns out, but I think he's successfully showcased proof of concept for future candidates.

I think we'll see much more of this style going forward.

It’s all relative. Presidential transitions have never been remarkable or noteworthy until we lost the normalcy and now it is suddenly noteworthy. This applies to ... absolutely everything about the office of the president and the very existence of a POTUS. We must not take it for granted and always remember it can all be taken away, as we're seeing now. In some cases we must codify into law the expectations and boundaries that require it. In some ways we’re lucky to have made it this far before someone came alone and decided to ignore it all.

While I remain horrified at the way this played out, both from the current administration and their political allies and their adoring public, I still want to see as much infighting and backstabbing on the way out as possible.

I hope they all turn on each other in the worst ways imaginable.

In response to Reply # 0

I am going to harp on a theme I see everywhere now but the whole "drama" about micro-news was a complete waste of time and distraction. We are so wired for real time and constant news updates we are led to believe minor events are bigger news then they are.

You know why we never heard of the head of the GSA, because they are not significant news makers but are instead beuaucrats who really don't have a role in standing in the way of a transition to a Biden presidency. I am not even sure this woman delayed the transition. She was a procurement officer. At most she slowed down getting office space and it might take a little longer to get reimbursement for their transition expenses.

I think her actions were inconsequential (or certainly less consequential then they were made out to be) but the media treated it like our very democracy was at risk if she didn't make that phone call.

IDK. I have just been annoyed by this election cycle how forgone conclusions are being treated like horse races.

Even the lawsuits being treated more of a real shot than they actually are.

Once you start looking for the false horse races and small events being blown up to bing events you see it everywhere and you see that we never really talk about the things that matter.

micro or fast news is making us all dumber and alarmist and losing the ability to think long term and see the bigger picture.

The 9/11 Commission report found that delays in transition led, in part, to needed vetting and appointment of national security personnel. And that was only a two day delay in a relatively "normal" climate.

This time we have a raging pandemic, an economic timebomb, and an impeached and criminal president who has been stoking the flames of violent white nationalism and stealing over a week of needed resources and planned time is actually a huge problem ... we'll never be able to ascertain how big of a problem it will be. If things go smoothly folks will say "it wasn't that bad." But that's not the case, because success will be in spite of the delay.

https://www.citizensforethics.org/reports-investigations/crew-investigations/gsa-head-emily-murphys-refusal-to-certify-transition-violates-historical-precedent/

Sadly, when it comes to delayed presidential transitions having human costs, there is a precedent there, too: In 2002, the 9/11 Commission Report stated that delays to the presidential transition in 2000 as a result of the contested election seriously hindered the vetting and appointment of crucial national security personnel. The current delays could represent a repeat of that mistake, this time impacting public health policy during a critical period. These concerns are exactly why, in 2004, Congress passed the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act, to ensure the incumbent administration supported prospective transition team members in gaining security clearance and access to classified information after Election Day. It’s also one of the reasons why the Bush and Obama teams worked so hard to ensure a smooth transition process, even though both were succeeded by a president of the opposing political party.

And I know "ignore the small stuff" doesn't sound like good advice and probably got us Trump in the first place. But Trump has also made us doubting ourselves and expertise in ways that aren't good or productive.

I think I am largely annoyed that we "have to" listen to everybody opine on any given topic any given day and they are never the experts and the noise keeps drowning out the experts who have been calling everything we see happening months/years before they happen.

But where I defer is that in the current environment there's not room to be uninformed.
As in there are people that are informing us and people misinforming us. It's information overload by magnitudes but it's not silence that drowns out noise, it's just other noise.

Meanwhile the people that have said "stay calm, it'll work out" aren't the people in the courthouses, aren't the people organizing, aren't the people creating "if that then this" action guides. None of the pushback works without awareness and coordination. So there has to be a balance of vigilance while not panicking.

Trump calls Georgia governor to pressure him for help overturning Biden’s win in the state

President Trump called Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp (R) on Saturday morning to urge him to persuade the state legislature to overturn President-elect Joe Biden’s victory in the state and asked the governor to order an audit of absentee ballot signatures, the latest brazen effort by the president to interfere in the 2020 election.

Hours before he was scheduled to hold a rally in Georgia on behalf of the state’s two GOP senators, Trump pressed Kemp to call a special session of the state legislature for lawmakers to override the results and appoint electors who would back the president at the electoral college, according to two people familiar with the conversation, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the private call.

Trump also asked the governor to demand an audit of signatures on mail ballots, something Kemp has previously noted he has no power to do. Kemp declined the president’s entreaty, according to the people.

But it's not just Trump and his narcissism. A lot of the GOP is willingly in on it. Not just sitting silent. But actively trying to generate instability.

I still think Jan 20th, Biden will be installed as president with no issues.

But stuff like this makes me a little nervous about the future.

Just like they did in 2000, they're learning a lot about what they can get away with right now.

And because Biden, like all establishment dems, has zero backbone in terms of prosecuting these assholes for their crimes, they're only going to be more emboldened.

In response to Reply # 0

https://www.npr.org/2020/12/09/944777203/michigan-gop-sidelines-democrat-for-her-unacceptable-response-to-lynching-threat

Michigan state Rep. Cynthia Johnson, a Black Democratic lawmaker who faced lynching threats and harassment following an Oversight Committee hearing last week where she leveled fierce criticism against President Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani, has been punished by House Republican leaders for a video she posted to Facebook on Tuesday. Republicans say that's because in the video she appears to threaten supporters of the president.

Johnson has been stripped of her committee assignments, including her position on the House Oversight Committee.

In the short but rambling three-minute and 10-second Facebook post, it's not clear exactly what Johnson means when she issues her "warning to you Trumpers. Be careful. Walk lightly." She also says, "And for those of you who are soldiers, you know how to do it. Do it right. Be in order. Make them pay."

Johnson posted a second video later.

In a statement, Republican leaders called Johnson's comments "unacceptable and un-American." Republicans also said they are looking into further action as investigations are ongoing. The statement continued: "We have been consistent in our position on this – violence and intimidation is never appropriate in politics. We have said that about threats against Gov. Whitmer, Secretary Benson, Rep. Johnson herself, and others. That applies to threats made toward public officials, and it must also apply when the threats come from public officials."

Johnson could not be reached for comment regarding the loss of her committee assignments or a threat of sanctions in the coming House term.

House Democratic Leader Christine Greig and Democratic Leader-elect Donna Lasinski also issued a joint statement: "There is no doubt that this election cycle has been rife with hyper-partisan political rhetoric, theatrics, and dangerous threats of violence toward elected and public officials and their loved ones, which continue to escalate amid the most significant public health crisis in our state and country."

But they said the action against Johnson will only increase tensions:

"The overheated language of the statement issued by Speaker Chatfield and Speaker-elect Wentworth, illustrates that the Republicans prioritize partisan politics and political theater over healing the wounds of division, preserving the well-being of the Legislature as an institution, protecting the safety of members, and acting on the needs of the people of Michigan."

The House is expected to adjourn for the year at the end of this week. Johnson will return for her second term when the Legislature's new session begins in January.

https://apnews.com/article/ken-paxton-austin-texas-crime-f8413d14842d848e69cf81bb4d2e87e2

The FBI is investigating allegations that Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton broke the law in using his office to benefit a wealthy donor, according to two people with knowledge of the probe.

Federal agents are looking into claims by former members of Paxton’s staff that the high-profile Republican committed bribery, abuse of office and other crimes to help Austin real estate developer Nate Paul, the people told The Associated Press. They insisted on anonymity to discuss the investigation because it is ongoing.

Confirmation of the criminal probe marks mounting legal peril for Paxton, who’s denied wrongdoing and refused calls for his resignation since his top deputies reported him to federal authorities at the end of September.

A criminal defense attorney for Paxton, Philip Hilder, declined to comment. Spokespersons in the attorney general’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

It’s unclear how far the FBI is into investigating the allegations against Paxton. An agency spokeswoman in San Antonio declined to comment.

Paxton is accused of using his position as Texas’ top law enforcement official to benefit Paul in several ways, according to seven senior lawyers in the attorney general’s office and the agency’s head of law enforcement. Central to their claims is the fact that Paxton hired an outside lawyer to investigate the developer’s allegations that the FBI improperly searched his home and offices last year.

Each of Paxton’s accusers has resigned, been put on leave or been fired since reporting him. Last week, four of them filed a state whistleblower lawsuit against the attorney general, claiming he ousted them as retribution.

The full nature of Paxton and Paul’s connection remains unclear. In 2018, Paul donated $25,000 to the attorney general’s reelection campaign. The developer also said in a recent deposition that Paxton recommended a woman for her job with his company.

Two people previously told The Associated Press that Paxton acknowledged in 2018 having an extramarital affair with the woman, who was then a state Senate aide. The people spoke on condition of anonymity due to fears about retaliation.

Paxton said in a Tuesday statement to the Austin American-Stateman that, “after reviewing the claims made by former employees of this office, their allegations are overblown, based upon assumptions, and to a large degree misrepresent the facts.”

Paxton has spent most of his tenure in office maintaining his innocence in the face of an indictment on unrelated securities fraud charges. The case has been stalled for years over legal challenges.

The State of Texas’s motion for leave to file a bill of complaint is denied for lack of standing under Article III of the Constitution. Texas has not demonstrated a judicially cognizable interest in the manner in which another State conducts its elections. All other pending motions are dismissed as moot.

None. Zero. All 50 states certified the election results. The Electoral College votes on Monday. They follow will of the voters. Trump has been pushing for Republican controlled legislations to put in faithless electors, but in these swing states there are either laws against it or have shown zero interest in it. And even if states like Michigan and Pennsylvania did do it, they have Democratic governors who would veto it.

>didnt Hilary win the popular vote but lost the EC?
>how does that work?
>
She won populous states like California and New York by large margins. But the EC disproportionately rewards more power to states with lower populations.

I think Lurk was just saying not to worry about this election being overturned.

But as you pointed out, there's a ton to be worried about in terms of what all of this means going forward. We both rightly point out that repugs learned a ton in 2000 and will learn from this, too, regarding what they are able to get away with.

And sadly but unsurprisingly, it doesn't look like Biden will be interested in holding Trump or any of these treasonous ghouls accountable.

In response to Reply # 254

First of all, the lawsuit is asking the Supreme Court to delay the electoral vote in the four states named and only those four states. That's unconstitutional. Electoral college votes all happen on the same day.

Second, Texas doesn't have the legal standing to bring a lawsuit against another on how it runs it's elections. It'd be like if California sued Florida because it thinks it's COVID policies are too permissive.

Third, even if they could sue, they'd have to ask the Supreme Court for permission first, and they'd have to show that there's no other places to resolve the issues. All the issues in this case have been argued, and lost, in the lower courts.

Texas is alleging that the votes in four states, and only those four states, be thrown out because they made change to their mail-in voting policy this year based on COVID. You know what other state also changed their voting policy due to COVID? Texas.

Also, the idea that the Supreme Court would decide to invalidate roughly 20 million votes over nebulous claims of "irregularities" without no actual proof of widespread fraud anywhere is preposterous.

This is craven political theater. The Republicans who signed on for this, including the 107 congress members, are a bunch of cowards who should be mocked and shunned for the rest of their days, but this is them kissing up to Trump in attempts to wooing his voter base. That, and they're scared.

In response to Reply # 0

https://www.cnn.com/2020/12/11/politics/supreme-court-texas-trump-biden/index.html

(CNN)The Supreme Court rejected a bid from Texas' attorney general -- supported by President Donald Trump -- to block the ballots of millions of voters in battleground states that went in favor of President-elect Joe Biden.

The court's move to dismiss the challenge is the strongest indication yet that Trump has no chance of overturning election results in court that even the justices whom he placed there have no interest in allowing his desperate legal bids to continue.
The lawsuit, brought by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a staunch Trump ally, sought to sue Pennsylvania, Michigan, Georgia and Wisconsin -- which all went for Biden -- and invalidate their election results. And this week, with his options narrowing, Trump, accompanied by the support of several Republican attorneys general and GOP lawmakers, cranked up pressure to have the Supreme Court weigh in.
Trump and his legal team -- hamstrung by a series of coronavirus diagnoses among lawyers who had traveled across the country advocating on behalf of Trump's case -- have for weeks pushed increasingly desperate appeals and baseless conspiracy theories about his second term being stolen.
The court did not provide a vote count, but there were no dissents to the order made public.
Separately, justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas said they would have allowed the case to be filed, but would grant no other relief.

Next up, it'll get argued in congressional session. And on the Senate floor. Ted Cruz is going find a way to give his impassioned speech that he wanted to make to the Supreme Court one way or another, goddamit.

It will be marked as the beginning of the end. We will now going forward for the first time see President's punish opposition parties with jail time going forward. We will have disputes over recognizing the legitimacy of elections. SMH.

It might take about 2 presidential cycles but eventually sanity will be restored.

It might take the old guard leaving or dying off, ie Trump, McConnell, Graham, and the similar ilk before rational instincts to follow the rule of law to set back in.

At that time, i believe Trump will be just an anomaly and footnote to history as the time an authoritarian almost overthrew the country. His asshole-ness will be WELL documented in the annals of political history, but one term presidents are rarely remembered fondly over the course of history and his presidency will be looked at as more of a cautionary tale for presidential candidates moving forward than a shift in our democracy. If anything, our democracy held up well against his toxic attempts to overthrow this election. The rebuke of him, even elected officials of his own party will be remembered longer than what he failed to do.

Thats just my opinion.

It seems to me that the newer names are worse. More partisan. Less concerned about norms and decency. More inflammatory.

They are Trump influenced. But (some) are better at politics

The new Trump influenced reps look more like sheep ready to follow and dickhead president off a cliff than something they could have come up on their own. If Trump had conceded right away like every other president, i seriously doubt they would have mustarded up the challenges they eventually signed on to because bullying by Trump and his staff.

What he did to ginny up his base to wreak havoc on fellow americans over the next four years is a much scarier proposition to me than a group of Republican reps signing on a failed mission to overthrow an election because they were bullied into submitting to.

But we'll see how it plays out.

The Republican's part last 40 years has all been leading to this point.

The treat democracy and power like a game and they give ZERO FUCKS about people.

That's why there's been no senate action on a second relief bill - it's PURELY because of the callous and shameful actions of the Republicans.

The Heroes Act passed out of the house on May 15th and has literally been sitting in the senate NOT being acted upon. https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/house-bill/6800

Literally the "Replace and repeal" bullshit the Republicans having been doing is dishonest too. They could replace without repeal. They haven't done ANYTHING on replacement - only repeal.

I got 20-30 years left to live - we'll see , but I am not hopeful.

Trump treating the Presidency like a power game, is much different than a group of republicans gerrymandering their way to attain more power in their respective states. And them being bullied to sign on to Trumps mess and ride out with his failed mission of overthrowing the election, wouldn't have come to fruition if Trump didn't lead a daily assault on the certification and Biden and the first time in American presidential history, holding up the transition the way he did. Trump led and bullied those repubs, i believed never would have signed on to trumps failed mission if they weren't scared not to. It wasn't their scheme to assault our democracy. And the fact that it failed at the highest level, gives me hope that their action moving forward will be bulletproof and cant be stopped. Look at how they asked the Supreme Court recently to repeal the ACA and was asked to paraphrase, "How come you haven't try to repeal it in Congress?" To which they had no answer.

Listen are Repubs shameless and seem to not be emphatic to most things reasonable? Yes they are.

But they are smart enough to know their limitation are too. If nothing else, they learned, and more importantly Trumpsters learned, that opinion are not FACTS in a court of law.

Trump is a one of kind president, for better or worse. His ego and narcissism ruled in a way no other president has. And his disregard for election law or the Constitution, did not prevent him and his colleagues from getting their asses handed to them, even by judges Trump appointed THAT is part of what gives me hope. The Republicans that stood up to this lunatic president didn't put him over the rule of law that could have gotten them in trouble themselves. Those Republican Michigan legislatures reps he invited to the WH to ask them to help overthrow the Michigan election told him no. The Georgia Secretary of State and Governor, in a Red state, rejected him at each turn.

I feel hope for the future because i don't think we will see another president like him. And i don't believe the party of Trump, the most dramatic narcissist president of our time, can not hold up for ever. If he had won the second term, then all bets would have been off. Then i believe his effect would have been generational. But like Biden and Obama said in this campaign, this was a battle for the soul of America. We won our soul back and i feel that quite a few Republican reps silently will be happy to see him go even if they are scared to say so now.

I am more scared of his legion of Trumpsters potential assaults on fellow americans over the next 4 years than anything else. If he can ginny up enough hate in some people to attempt to kidnap a Governor, they those groups arent going anywhere anytime soon. How these idiots acts in the coming years will be on full display. I just hope nothing serious happens to another elected official they may target.

We shall see. Appreciate the discourse, even if we disagree on things.

I love talking politics.

Repugs do whatever they think they can get away with. Gerrmandering and voter suppression was all they thought the public would let them slide w/for decades. Now that Trump has led the way to a complete fascist takeover attempt, they're more than happy to play along. So none of what Trump's doing is all that different, not as different as you're making it out to be at least. It's all part of the same game. Minority rule, no matter the means.

They've gotten so bad that for a while folks actually thought Reagan was a GOAT prez. Even folks on the "left."

And the past 4 years folks have so easily forgotten the war crimes and general shittiness of GWB.

“Just had a very nice meeting with Attorney General Bill Barr at the White House. Our relationship has been a very good one, he has done an outstanding job! As per letter, Bill will be leaving just before Christmas to spend the holidays wit
