"2016 Election - where were you?"

I was attending a concert.

Me: House of Blues, San Diego, CA - Peter Hook & The Light
perform Substance: Joy Division & New Order.

Hooky had just completed the Joy Division part and was moving
into New Order when people started looking at phones and
getting upset.

I left 20 minutes later, very depressed.

Were and how were you?

We were having dinner in an Italian pizza restaurant and
joking about staying in Canada if Trump won.

I was on the phone with my sister for most of the night. She
took it hard.

I was telling everyone I could leading up to it that Trump was
going to win. I felt that way since probably July.

We drove to California the next day to go see Roisin Murphy.
There were protests and the freeways were shutdown.

One of the most surreal couple of days I've ever had.

I opened the bar I had just helped get off the ground for
happy hour and it happened to be an unreasonably nice day not
so different from today (it's 81 degrees here in Nebraska in
the first week of November) so we had the slide windows open
wide and jazz blasting out onto the street - probably
Coltrane's Giant Steps since it was me. Just a few minutes
after we opened two women came into the bar, ordered a bottle
of white wine and sat on a banquette against one of those
large windows, poured each other a glass and then just stared
out the window for several minutes.

I didn't have much side work to do that day since the bar was
still fairly new and wasn't popping off like I'd thought it
would since the owners refused to promote it at all, so those
several minute felt like a year. I couldn't take out my phone
or anything and they weren't distracting each other from the
fact I was just standing there four or five feet away from
them listening to jazz. One of the women finally turned to
look at me from the window, then to her friend and raised her
glass, started crying immediately and said "Fuck
'em!" The other woman started laugh crying, cheers'd her
friend and spent the next hour talking about how absolutely
trash powerful men are while nobody else ever came in.

We were just in the hotel room watching the results, on our
phones, talking shit, playing around. She ended up going to
sleep early as she wasn't as invested as me, but I watched and
watched and watched as it slowly became a reality that trump
was inching closer to victory.

After the election was called for him, a bitch was
devastated...like truly and completely. I mean, I was fucking
done for. Needless to say, the remainder of the trip had a
definite pall of despair hanging over it.

had to keep my white coworkers from going off the ledge bc
they didn't know america is pretty trash

also had to keep them from writing up some of the more insane
rumors that were going around as news

and had to manage about 18 breakdowns of people I knew who
weren't handling it well.

wasn't a great night.

I was on a work trip in WA state, Seattle burbs. used to
spend 1wk/mo. out there. Busy day, didn't get back to the
hotel till about 7:30pm.

Walked into the lobby and the brother at the desk, just shook
his head: "you see what's going on" I really
hadn't, but I also forgot that 7:30 there was 10:30pm on the
east coast.

He just said, go upstairs and turn on the TV. I know what was
up at that point, and then the night just got worse from
there.

Probably good I was on the west coast, and really busy with
work. instead of constantly refreshing every relevant site
every minute like I am doing now.

Also the stakes feels even higher this year, b/c we already
know how bad it can get.
