I plan on going on what I hope is a peaceful and easy going Sunday afternoon. A scarce, minimal crowd would be blissful.

My normal voting place is a bit small and I'm worried even if I go bright and early in the morning in November, things can get risky health wise.

For folks that plan to vote in person, stay safe.

I will probably wait a couple of days to see if there are long lines. Hoping to go when there aren't too many people. Will either go towards the end of the first week or the beginning of the second week. Got until the 30th but don't want to wait too long.

But I don't think a lot of us were going to vote by mail anyways unfortunately. Not with Paxton in power.

Last week he floated that he was going to shorten early voting and I think that may have been the bridge too far.

I live in a heavily Democratic city that somehow elected a Republican Mayor last time. I feel like he is done and will be voted out in November. Got some interesting Democratic candidates.

My bubble has been fed up with Abbott but I don't know how Texas at large feels about him. Dude being too scared to use his power to encourage counties to shut down during covid then flipping to using his power to force them to open showed me all I would need to know. If I had any doubt at all before that.

I'm glad to see there are organizations fighting him on closing drop off locations.

I voted late last week. Me and the wife. It took 10 minutes total. I took off work and went late one morning. Like 10:45 am. The line was 5-10 people deep when we pulled up. We voted at a church youth center near our house cuz it would make no sense to go vote at some huge place if a smaller spot was nearby.

I am very glad to have that done. Harris county Houston voting is going pretty strong and the story right now is that it’s mostly Dems. How do they know that enough to say it out loud? It’s 2020, so folks might just report something without rock solid proof that it’s the troof. Whatever it is, I hope folks can turn down WAP or skip part of a birfday party to get their ass up to a place to vote. It’s out of our hands once we vote but I don’t want to be sitting at home next January wishing more folks had voted.

Federal judge blocks Gov. Abbott's order restricting Texas counties to one ballot drop-off location

U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman said the order placed an unacceptable burden on the voting rights of elderly and disabled Texans.

Author: Jeff Bell, Bryce Newberry (KVUE)
Published: 9:55 PM CDT October 9, 2020
Updated: 10:29 PM CDT October 9, 2020

AUSTIN, Texas — In an order on Friday, a federal judge granted a preliminary injunction that bars enforcement of Gov. Greg Abbott’s Oct. 1 order limiting ballot drop-off locations to one per county.

U.S. District Judge Robert Pitman said the order placed an unacceptable burden on the voting rights of elderly and disabled Texans, a group likely to request an absentee ballot.

To request a mail-in ballot in Texas, you must be 65 or older, sick or disabled, out of the county on Election Day and during the period for early voting or be confined to jail but otherwise eligible.

RELATED: Federal judge hears arguments for, against Gov. Abbott's order to limit ballot drop-off locations

The judge’s decision noted sick and elderly voters are especially vulnerable to COVID-19.

“By limiting ballot return centers to one per county, older and disabled voters living in Texas’s largest and most populous counties must travel further distances to more crowded ballot return centers where they would be at an increased risk of being infected by the coronavirus in order to exercise their right to vote and have it counted,” Pitman said.

Pitman said if absentee voters choose not to deliver their ballot in person to avoid contracting the coronavirus, they risk disenfranchisement if the U.S. Postal Service is unable to deliver their ballots in time.

“By forcing absentee voters to risk infection with a deadly disease to return their ballots in person or disenfranchisement if is unable to deliver their ballots in time, the October 1 Order imposes a burden on an already vulnerable voting population,” he said.

Last Thursday, Gov. Abbott issued a proclamation that restricted counties to having just one mail-in ballot drop-off location for the entire county. In Travis County, that reduced the four locations already set up to just one at the Travis County Tax Office.

Quickly after, several groups sued the governor and other elected officials. The National and Texas League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) filed federal suit first on Oct. 1, claiming the governor’s order “engenders voter confusion and undermines the public’s confidence in the election itself.”

Then on Oct. 2, the Texas Alliance for Retired Americans sued in federal court, claiming the governor’s proclamation “threatens the right to vote for countless lawful Texas voters.”

Gov. Abbott said his proclamation was intended to enhance ballot security protocols.

“As we work to preserve Texans’ ability to vote during the COVID-19 pandemic, we must take extra care to strengthen ballot security protocols throughout the state. These enhanced security protocols will ensure greater transparency and will help stop attempts at illegal voting,” Gov. Abbott said in a statement when he announced the proclamation.

Following the first lawsuit, the governor’s office told KVUE in a statement:

“The Governor has not limited voting—instead he has expanded access to voting. Before the Governor’s executive order, Texans who wanted to vote by mail could either mail their ballot or submit it in person on Election Day only. Because of COVID-19, the governor’s executive order increased the time period during which voters can submit their mail in ballot in person to include anytime leading up to Election Day. That time period did not exist under current law. Moreover, the only ballots subject to this order are mail-in ballots. Most of those ballots are in fact submitted by mail. The additional time provided for those who want to submit their mail in ballot in person is sufficient to accommodate the limited number of people who have traditionally used that voting strategy.”

A third federal lawsuit was filed Oct. 6 by the Texas State Conference of the NAACP branches, claiming the governor’s proclamation was a “thinly veiled attempt to suppress the vote under the guise of ‘enhancing ballot security’.” A hearing for that case has not been set.

A fourth lawsuit, filed in the Travis County District Court by the Anti-Defamation League, alleges the governor’s proclamation “violates the Texas constitution – in addition to being inconsistent with principles of efficient election administration and fundamental fairness to all Texas voters.” That case was assigned to Travis County’s 353rd Civil District Court but a hearing has not been set.

After the ruling on Friday, the Texas Democrats issued a statement, calling it a "common sense" ruling.

"Gov. Abbott’s attempt to suppress Texas voters has been thwarted," said Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa. "Judge Pitman’s common sense order followed well-established law and stopped the governor from making up election rules after the election started. Frankly, it ought to be a shock to all of us that such a ruling is even required."

Travis County said it is working on how to best reopen other drop-off locations that were closed by the governor's order.

"We are grateful the court recognized what is best for voters," the county said in a statement. "Travis County Elections will do everything possible to assure that voters receive clear information and advice about the newest ruling, and that the ballot of every eligible voter is counted."

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is likely to appeal the ruling.

tldr: Texas Gov. Abbott's order restricting counties from having multiple ballot drop boxes is back on for now. Response brief due Oct. 12.

Note that this panel features not one, not two, but three judges who are on Trump's SCOTUS short list.

James Ho — appointed by Trump in 2017 to a vacancy created in 2013

Kyle Duncan — appointed by Trump in 2017 to a vacancy created on New Year’s Eve 2016

If you're wondering why it took so long to fill those spots, ask Republicans. Imma tell my kids this was court packing.

2. his claims are without merit
3. the rules put in place by the state do not burden the right to vote

Waited til the last day of early voting. Went to one of the more central locations. Literally stood for eight hours and it was like 10 or 11 in the morning when I got there.

Now seeing the same 8+ hour voting lines twelve years later makes no damn sense. Yes it was a 'holiday', yes people want to be first, yes people are going in person b/c they don't trust absentee ballots right now but still NOTHING should lead to standing 11 hours in line to vote.

49. "Early voter turnout in Colorado up by 2400% "
In response to Reply # 0

https://www.denverpost.com/2020/10/15/colorado-2020-election-voter-turnout-ballots/

More than 300,000 Colorado voters have returned ballots for the Nov. 3 election as of 11:30 Wednesday night — a staggering display of enthusiasm in a state that sends all voters a ballot by mail.

When that latest figure was tabulated by the Secretary of State’s Office, Colorado was 20 days out from the election. Twenty days out from the 2016 election — when Colorado also had universal mail-in voting — 12,141 people had cast ballots, said a spokeswoman for Secretary of State Jena Griswold. That’s a 2,377% increase in early turnout this year as compared with 2016, when overall voter turnout far exceeded the national average.

“It’s great for democracy to see so many Coloradans making their voices heard,” Griswold told The Denver Post. “Even with ballots still being mailed this week to registered voters, turnout is 24 times higher than at this point in 2016.”

Politicos in Colorado are floored by these numbers, which Democratic political consultant Craig Hughes described as “bonkers.”

“This appears to be the beginning stage of what we expect to be incredibly high turnout for the November 3rd election,” wrote Ryan Winger of the Republican polling firm Magellan Strategies, based in Boulder County.

There is a clear enthusiasm gap between Republicans and Democrats in early voting, numbers from the Secretary of State’s Office indicate.

Of the 300,795 people who had voted as of late Wednesday, 46% were registered Democrats, who comprise just 30% of total active, registered voters in Colorado and typically vote later than Republicans.

A September poll of registered Colorado voters showed that 87% of Biden supporters were “extremely motivated” to vote, 7% higher than Trump voters here. Polling has also shown Colorado has many more Biden supporters than Trump supporters, as the president has had a consistent double-digit polling deficit in this state.

Republicans make up 27% of the state’s overall voter roll but accounted for only 19% of ballots received by late Wednesday.

“While there is no reason right now to suspect that Republican turnout will be depressed, with every day that goes by that this trend continues it will be worrisome for Republican candidates,” Winger wrote.

Said Hughes, “In 2016, over the first week, more Republicans than Democrats had voted, and yet we (Democrats) weren’t overly concerned about Trump beating Hillary Clinton. What’s a major concern for Republicans now is that there used to be more of them in Colorado. You now have an over-100,000 Democratic voter registration advantage, and you now have this enthusiasm, which puts Republicans in a serious hole.”

He said he would be “very concerned, but not in a panic,” were he a Republican strategist. Concern was evident in a Thursday morning email blast from Arapahoe County GOP Chair Dorothy Gotlieb.

“There is ‘advice’ out there, based on a trumped-up (please forgive) rumor, that Republicans should wait to cast their ballots, and/or should vote in person,” she wrote, adding three times in the email: “DO NOT WAIT! VOTE TODAY – AND ENCOURAGE EVERY REPUBLICAN TO VOTE NOW!”

A 41% plurality of Colorado voters are unaffiliated, and they account for 33% of ballots returned so far.

“The turnout percentage for Unaffiliated voters is actually higher than that for Republicans right now, which compared to past cycles is very unusual,” Magellan’s Winger wrote. “It shows that 2018 was not an anomaly – Colorado’s Unaffiliated voters are engaging and showing up to vote and make their voice heard.”

President Donald Trump has consistently attacked voting by mail as a cause of widespread fraud, despite substantial evidence to the contrary. Hughes said he expects that Republicans in Colorado will still trust mail voting this year, in spite of that. In 2016, more Republicans than Democrats voted by mail nationally.

“The Republican ballots will come in,” Hughes said. “You’re just seeing less enthusiasm for doing so on their side right now.”

Very few people have voted in person in Colorado, as most counties are not yet offering that option. Of the more than 300,000 ballots submitted, just 275 were cast in person, the Secretary of State’s Office reported. All but 13 of those in-person votes are from El Paso or Denver counties.

I just checked the ballot tracking site for my county, and the tally so far shows 40k Democrats, 20k Repubs, and 35k unaffiliated votors have returned ballots so far.

I had decided to wait until today, or sometime this week. Hopefully out of an irrational fear that votes last week would be contested.

I have to admit I started getting anxious about waiting. There was a new polling site near my house so decided to go to it. There was one person voting when I got there and like 5 open stations. By the time I left I think most machines were occupied.

I definitely want Trump gone but I'm almost more excited about possibly having someone from my generationish as mayor. I hope she wins.

Glad to be done with this.

had to call the BOE once, when his ballot hadn’t shown up in hella long and again when he got impatient and called himself and someone told him he needed to have his ballot notarized...despite him having a permanent disability and being in an at risk category due to being a diabetic. All in all, considering what some are going through to vote, can’t complain about that. Peace to you for doing that for your fam. I know they appreciate you.

She got distracted and wrote a word instead of her name. Bruh. My heart sank so I called BOE right away they said don't worry just cross it out , have her write it above and initial it. I did that, went to take it in but since I wasn't close relative (child, brother/sister) I would have to note that when dropping off and it would then be up to BOE to approve. So I gave it to my mom to drop it off.

Now I'm nervous it'll be an issue. Despite them saying it would be ok. We'll just have to see at this point.

Peace to you and your dad. Glad he's got you

Early votes in Texas have already surpassed all the statewide ballots cast for Trump in 2016

https://www.businessinsider.com/early-voters-texas-exceed-states-total-trump-turnout-2016-2020-10?utm_source=reddit.com

i really hope people keep showing up to vote. according to this 4.7 million people have already voted in texas. trump got 4.68 million votes in texas in 2016.

couldnt find total number for early votes in 2016 for texas but i think it was around 50% of total votes. texas might actually have respectable turn out for once.

Less folks are falling for the ‘your vote doesn’t matter’ tricks now. I’m interested in the local races more than ever more.

As for DT, I want to believe that lots of folks get that he doesn’t really want the job anymore. And the shenanigan festival has been over the top even for him. Getting covid, not being truthful, showing up everywhere still cracking jokes like shit is sweet.

BUT

Some folks are gonna vote a party no matter who the jackass candidate is. I’d like to live to see that almost all stopped.

ive been looking at voting data on
https://earlyvoting.texas-election.com/Elections/getElectionEVDates.do

so far el paso is 29.95% turnout. other counties are near 50%.

so i looked at 2016 data, total turnout was 35.12%
https://www.sos.texas.gov/elections/earlyvoting/2016/nov4.shtml

so far, through 10/22 146,231 people have voted in el paso county compared to 150,446 total that voted in 2016.

registered voters are up to 488,470 compared to 428,320 in 2016. so were actually really close to matching turnout from 2016. will probably pass it after todays numbers are posted.

i was looking at the 2016 date and first week was averaging 15k voters a day, then about 10k a day in the second week. 15k voted in person on election day.

so el paso sucks but is doing better so far? it will be interesting to see how many people vote next week. based on the numbers so far im guessing el paso ends up around 45-50% turnout.

and yes, i need to chill at looking at this stuff lol

I was perturbed by the long wait, but glad I got it out of the way.

I can only wonder how much of a wait it'll be for folks here in my little section of Brooklyn that will wait until Nov 3rd.

I suppose it's a good thing to see so many folks turn out, but standing on line for that long was far from ideal. I suppose my own stubbornness from not leaving the line plays a part as well.

I did like that fact the poling place I went to had a digital thermometer on the wall to scan if folks were sickly or not. That is a nice added measure that is sadly needed in these interesting times.

Looking at the news over the weekend, over 60K folks in Brooklyn voted between Saturday and Sunday, so the long wait makes sense. Brooklyn had the highest numbers of all the five boros for early voting.

Keep in mind that here in NYC, folks are locked into specific polling spots, especially for early voting, hence the long lines.

I live on pretty much the other side of Brooklyn compared to both of those polling sites.

Pretty cool of the Knicks and Nets owners to allow for both Barclays and MSG to get used for those purposes though.

You might have to go before the polling spot opens up to avoid extra long lines.

Hopefully in your case, a boring mid-week day like Wednesday will be nice and peaceful with minimal stress.

No one should have to wait 5 hours to vote in 2020. This is the type of shit that keeps me worried.

"The board has long come under fire for its bungles, including sending the wrong ballot envelopes to 100,000 Brooklyn voters in advance of the current election. During a primary in June, many voters failed to get their absentee ballots in time, while voters who showed up in person were given incomplete ballots."

when they don’t plan on voting.

I guess they just want attention or to be on the mix.

It’s like going to a bar and telling people who you don’t drink.

Also, there's a strain of nationalism rooted in the politics of inevitability that runs through here where it's not really about making things better for Black people (because that's impossible due to the cunningness of the cracker! so nothing changes or can change) but making everyone suffer.

There's also the need for attention. There is a thorough lack of understanding of history, politics and how to wield political power. There are some people here who actively want to promote lack of participation. There's some people who want validation for their choice.

Also, impotence needs an outlet. And everyone wants to feel seen.

In terms of metaphor, it's like going to a salad bar and telling everyone you're on the Carnivore Diet because you heard about it on Facebook.

or vote in-person if possible.

Because the Post Office wait times are back to where they were in Summer. In Wisconsin, SCOTUS ruled ballots that arrive after 8pm on Election day cannot be counted (regardless of postmark).

In Pennsylvania, SCOTUS allowed ballots received up to 3 days after Election Day because it was split 4-4 (Barrett would have have made it 5-4).

I'm gonna double check the references to see if his twitter is cited

He didn't go with his colleagues saying late arriving votes are against the law (they basically said state courts can't change state law).

Kavs argument was that if votes come in after election day, it will cause suspicion of voter fraud. He says it would appear fraudulent if someone was ahead on election day and then the vote flipped afterwards (as it did in many places in 2018 to Trump's Twitter's dismay).

But there is no law saying votes must be counted on election day. Votes just have to be cast on/by election day. The instant gratification and pageantry of the CNN decision desk shouldn't be cited as a reason to cut off legitimate votes

I dropped my ballot off on Indigenous Peoples' Day rocking my "American Horror Story" x Trump shirt and somebody bought me a drink or two off the strength.

Got an email from the county the next day that it'd been received and would be counted.

This is in CA-- where my presidential vote is likely nonconsequential but there are plenty of state props that could go either way.

In response to Reply # 0

so far 9,009,850 people have voted in texas. 8,969,226 voted in total in 2016. the percentage is still below but very close, 53.14% so far compared to 59.59% of registered voters in 2016.

i really wonder how many people will vote on election day. i think there is a case to expect it will be below average but also a case to say it will be above.

also, correction on el paso, i had previously said around 150k voted in total in 2016. looks like the total was actually 210,502 (49.15%). we are at 203,976 (41.76%) so far.

yesterday seemed to be a big turnout day in el paso and texas overall compared to the previous few days.

Ours lets us know when we requested the ballot, when it was mailed to us, when we voted (we took ours to a drop box) and confirms if it was counted.

i think im going to request the afternoon off tomorrow. got a couple of things to take care off. picking up mario kart live from best buy. will probably kill some time with it before polls close.

i will probably be glued to the news come 7pm eastern. worried i will stay up late and be too tired wednesday morning so kind of want to request the day but not quite sure if thats a good move. figure the boss will question it especially since im working in the office this week.

i also think id rather be distracted on wednesday if the race is still close.

If a fat guy falls in the woods and there is no one around to see it, do the trees laugh?

Wife and I are gonna catch a couple of movies. Starts at like 5:45 p.m. and probably won't end until close to midnight. We'll be locking our cell phones in the trunk of the car. Hoping by the time we get him, it'll be over (we're in California). But I doubt we'll be that lucky.

if i know myself, if things are breaking largely in Biden's way I'll keep the news on, and if they go the other direction or is too close, i'll throw on some music or something to distract.

season I travel a bit and go back to the past.

I went and visited starting with Malcolm X, James Baldwin, Fannie Lou Hamer and ending w/ Frederick Douglass graves. Its a different feeling when you read and study historical folk vs visting their tombstones. And yes I'm one of those people who actually talks to the dead, and I gave them a run down as to what's going on in 2020.

Just seeing their names on their headstones motivated me to not just vote but write checks to local and state officials who are running for policies to help the black community.

Lastly, I went to Douglass home in Highland Beach, Md in August. One of the Alphas who's direct descendant of FD and his 1st wife, Anne, gave me a tour of the home where his 1st son built, yet he died before he got a chance to live in it. There's a balcony where a rocking chair was placed for FD to sit in and he wouldve looked across the river and see Talbot County, the place he was enslaved in and where one night his mistress is teaching him to read, and he hears his mistress' husband telling her "dont teach that lil nigger how to read, it'll start trouble."

I early voted last month.

I want to take my kids on a journey like this when they are old enough to appreciate it.
