"When was the last time you had a haircut or a beard trim?"

the funny thing is...I was already growing it out before quarantine.

aight, so I work in a law firm. The big players, the people you move out the way for are partners. I've always been nappy but I kept it close in a controlled nap situation. Over the years I've been noticing that there is a senior black partner and that dude has the most Cornell West looking ass nappy afro and he makes it work because he's always crisp as fuck. I'm a medium crisp dude, so I knew I could make it work.

So, back in January, I was like, fuck it, I'm going to go nappy - alllllllllllll the way nappy. Jay Z working-on-a-new-album nappy.

I was growing it, living my best life and then covid hit.

I havent had a haircut since....March and even then I was just getting shaped up and trimmed.

Ya'll?

made it 4 weeks and my shit was looking wild nasty and even moreso because it appears there's just sections of facial hair that will never meet each other (tho admittedly long than ever before).

magic shaved the domepiece and cut it all down to a goatee.

i can't do it.

Shaving wise...I can only let my shit go so far before it's just too uncomfortable for me (and my wife) to live with...

I'd let my hair grow out from like March through June or so...then the heat came and I couldn't get my running hats over my head right so I cut all that shit off real quick....

My beard looks worse than my hair but it's covered in a mask when I go out anyway. Been working from home since March and only been to the office about ten times since then.

Didn't have much of a social life before the pandemic (introvert married to an introvert) so I damn sure don't have one now.

Just not worth the potential exposure for me but if my office opens back up I'll probably go.

Just use the low setting on some neck hair type clippers. I don’t like a full beard but I don’t like shaving it all the way either.

I resumed getting haircuts every few weeks back in August. But I went from March to August without getting one - just did it myself maybe two times to keep it from getting too out of control.

I'm also in a law firm but I'm in our Finance Dept. We're normally business casual. I usually keep my head shaved and a goatee (salt & pepper).

When they told us to work from home in early March, I decided to let everything go until we go back to the office. I assumed that this would be maybe 2-3 months at most. Here we are in October and they've told us that we won't be back in the office anytime before January.

My hair is out of control. One interesting thing I've noticed is that my face is ravaged by white hairs. But not so much on my head. Maybe 5 or 6 stray ones up there.

I'm considering giving in and cutting it all off though. It's starting to get on my nerves.

I use the longest guard on my clippers to make the beard even every so often.

Haircut in 2010 was when I cut off my locs. My last REAL haircut was in 1999.

before that about 2 months..

when covid hit, i didn't get a haircut until the summer..

before covid, i kept my hair short with a high fade.
now since my hair grew out, i just get a low fade and leave the top alone..(nappy as fuck) .. every once in a while i use the sponge to twist it out..

my beard is trimmed when i get my cut, If it gets too crazy then I cut it down myself in between cuts..

it out to 3 weeks since I work from home and have a very limited social life lol.

I can't stand having a lot of hair on my head and face. At the height of covid when everything was shut down about 5 weeks in I bought some clippers on Amazon and just cut everything down super low. When barbershops re-opened I was one of the first people there lol.

i think maybe the first days of march. i think i was due for a cut when the stay home order hit.

definitely mixed results cutting it on my own. im raggedy right now because i didnt want to bother cutting it last weekend lol. i do work in the office next week so im going to have to take care of it this weekend.

ive definitely had temptations to go to a shop recently but dont think i will until covid is under control, whatever that means.

I keep my head shaved with a goatee, so I invested in a professional set of clippers, and a foil shaver. So far so good. My 16 year-old however was walking around looking like a werewolf.

I offered repeatedly to cut his hair and he declined. I will admit to having given him so-so to bad haircuts in the past...but that was when I was working with a cheap set of clippers.

Took him to a shop around the corner that only has two chairs going and no waiting inside. Barber is masked with latex gloves, and contactless payment.

My facial hair starts to curl the longer it gets and I need to use something to keep it all a good, even length in between my once a month barber visits. Thing I use right now leaves me patchy.

I’d recommend getting actual barber clippers for this, and not the cheap type that you get from the drug store. You don’t have to spend a lot either. Either some Oster Fast Feeds or Whal Magic Clips can be purchased for around $70, and will be WAY better than anything at the drug store, for a nice even length trim of a beard.

I do usually try to get by with the cheap stuff so I think it's time I go with a higher quality option.

powerful, and won’t cut as smooth or even. Those two I posted cost maybe twice as much but pay for themselves within a month or so. Professional clippers are made for barbers who are literally using them all day, 5-6 days a week. So they’ll last forever at home.

I went from using them in between cuts, to extending the time between going to the barber, to now never going to the barber for my hair or beard, and cutting both of my sons hair at home. Also went down the rabbit hole and have a whole variety of clippers and trimmers. But one of the above is all you need. Maybe add a trimmer like an Andis T-Outliner at some point if you want to also line up your beard.

In August he kinda jacked my beard up so I had to do some growing out, cutting down even and growing out again. He did his usual good job this time, thank goodness. I had cut my own hair a couple times in the meantime, I really missed having the crispy tight fade though. I can't do that myself.

Getting slimmer and slimmer, shaving, and always getting haircuts often is necessary at 50 for me.

I get raggedy looking very quickly unless I'm slim, shaved, and close neat haircut.

been wearing a low taper, spnonge fro for a minute. I'm like...fuck, tired of driving to the barber shop...even though I was only going every 2 weeks. Started watching TONS of barber videos and tutorials, researched machines and just went for it. Dropped a lil change to start off, but I figure....$19 plus tip for lining and taper...twice a month plus gas to and from and I should pay for the stuff in half a year or less. Kinda fucked up on the taper on one side, the first time. I'm pretty nice with the trimmer, though. I copped a three-way mirror system that hangs on a door. I thought the back would be the hardest but it was actually one of the sides I messed up on. Each time I get more comfortable holding the clipper at different angles, knowing when to open/close the clipper just a touch, etc. I'm excited. Plus (my barber is dope...good dude) but he had been pushing the vertical bar on my right side back for a minute. I think it's just something barbers do. Now I let it come back to where it naturally wants to be. Top it off, I was already pretty good with the razor, because I've always done my own beard.

sons' hair. I've invested in pro barber equipment for it, but the savings have been HUGE along with added flexibility.

but I got some joints that I’ve seen actual barbers do cuts with. I had some Andis Slimlines that I would use to line my beard, but I ditched them and went with all new ish. Clippers, I got the Stylecraft Absolute Alpha and for the trimmer, I went with some Gamma+ Evos. I copped the clipper off Amazon and was about to do the same for the trimmer until I somehow ended up on Barbersupply.com…they had them joints for $30 less than Amazon plus a 10% coupon code for all Gamma+ machines.

and barber equipment has gotten so much better and more accessible over the last few years. Stylecraft/Gamma really changed the game - definitely a case where the added competition has been great for the industry.

When I started I had the Andis Masters and T-Outliners. Ended up getting those same Slimlines, and also really liked the Oster Fast Feeds. But I went down a rabbit hole with the cordless stuff - Babyliss combos, JRL, etc.

Right now I use the JRLs as my main adjustable clipper and also their trimmer. My Babyliss Gold FX clipper and trimmer are the backup set. I still use the Slimlines for lining up my kids hair - those aren't zero gapped so safer to use on their baby skin. I use a Babyliss shaver for myself...

you'll get a kick out of this as someone who is waaaay more nice with this than me. I originally copped some cordless Wahl Seniors. Even copped the complete set of Wahl professional guards...the metal joints. First attempt and I'm all ready to rock. Got my mirror system set up, Ipad loaded up on Youtube...tape/fro self-cut tutorial with my man 360 Jeezy. I'm following step for step. I didn't realize the Wahl guards are not an exact 1 for 1 with the Andis or Andis-style jawns. I think he was rocking some Babyliss with the Andis 2 magnet guards. Anyway I ended up making a line that I couldn't quite get out and I kept messing with it til I took out too much real estate. So there wasn't a gradual blend, it was just no hair, then hair. I could have probably kept at it, but I was defeated that day. It wasn't even terrible, but I was disappointed all the same. Went on Amazon, started a return and took them joints...along with the guard set, straight to Kohls and dropped them off. Got my refund damn near before I got back home. Also, you mention zero-gapping. I haven't messed with either of these machines yet...but those EVO trimmers SMACK, right out the box. Think I might leave them like they are. As long as they are lining good, do you see any reason I should try to zero them? Thanks, bro.

at least for adjustable clippers. If you start getting into clippers with detachable blades like the Oster Model 10 those are a completely different type of guards.

I started cutting with Andis and have always preferred those style guards, but almost all the new clippers from other brands - Stylecraft/Gamma, JRL, Babyliss, etc. use the Wahl sizes. The purple Andis magnetic guards will kinda fit on anything because the magnets have them sitting on top. But I believe that only Andis and the Oster Fast Feeds use Andis style guards. 360 Jeezy has always been big on the Fast Feeds and before that Andis so I'm not surprised that he was using Andis guards on a Babyliss trimmer. Gotta be really careful doing that though...

As for zero gapping I doubt you need to worry about it at all on those Evos. A lot of the new trimmers are conning out the gate hitting very close to being zero gapped. You can cut yourself pretty bad trying to zero gap without a tool specifically for it, and no need if they are already hitting. Back in the day the T-Outliners came new with the blade WAY back on the guard so you HAD to adjust them out the box to get them to hit. Not the case with most trimmers now. My Babyliss Gold FX came out the box perfectly zero gapped. All this is the reason I use the Slimlines on my kids hair (that plus the more narrow blade is better/more maneuverable for their smaller heads.)

Nobody is going over my face/neck with a razor. Can’t do it.

Haircut, I’m usually every 3 weeks but I’m stretching it out to 4 this time.
