"Have we discussed what industries have prospered from COVID-19?"

We hear a lot about what industries have been hurt, which ones have profited?

Obviously drug companies are receiving billions.

Delivery companies like Amazon plus food delivery services have definitely benefited.

I feel like grocery stores and discount department stores like Wal-mart and Target have seen their profits go up.

The ammo business has obviously been up for a number of reasons.

Manufacturers of basic things like toilet paper, paper towels, bottled water couldn't keep those items on the shelves for months.

Manufacturers and sellers of PPE like masks and hand sanitizer also should be doing quite well.

What else?

At the start we were hurting. Between COVID ramp up (handing out PPE), ordering supplies, increased sanitizing, call outs, sick people, upgrading a VPN, decreased store traffic, closing down entire departments, limited stock, limiting store hours and traffic, paying overtime to make up for the warehouse call outs

I think we may be starting to break even now. But year projection relative to budget is way off. The thing that helped keep things going well was that gas prices also took a dip, so when you have a huge fleet of trucks the money doesn't hurt as much.

Some of the manufacturing companies are limited by their production capacity, so they can only increase production so much until they are at their limits. They could invest in more capacity (another/bigger factory, machinery, materials, workers) but that could end badly if demand suddenly dries up.

Ammunition manufacturers fall into the above category. Lumber is another one. Certain lumber products are getting really hard to find in the us because demand is outpacing capacity and the disruption to the supply chain.

You have the obvious companies like Zoom, Microsoft (Teams), Google Classroom/Hangouts), Schology, etc. But then from a secondary standpoint you have companies who support this from a B2B perspective. Companies doing consulting and training on how to work with remote employees, services supporting teachers who are doing virtual learning, etc...

Never did Amazon Fresh figured it was just easier to go to the store. But since the pandemic I get weekly (or more) orders from them.

Walmart delivery via Instacart has been used too - but they gave me ridiculous coupons so I got $100 of food for like $30 - and tipped the drivers well.

I had also used Vons.com for delivery a few times - i'd rarely do that in the past.

So definitely shifted my spending patterns.

But where I'm at right now it's too much of a hassle to go into the office, so for the foreseeable I'm WFH 100%.

If I stayed at my old place, 5 min walk from the train? Hell yeah, as much as I don't miss commuting every day I do miss getting out of the house once in a while haha.

are laid out, the way companies hire, the options employees have for other jobs, etc.

I work for a company that already let us work from home whenever we wanted. But our clients are businesses who rarely ever let their staff work from home. I manage a team of consultants who would travel around the country to work with those clients. Due to Covid travel restrictions, all of that work has been done remotely now as well. That won’t stop even after it’s safe to travel - it’s cheaper and more efficient (for both the client and us) to meet virtually than to have people flying out to clients.

Which brings up another change - the business travel industry is going to be way down after this.

I prefer face-to-face meetings and stopping by someone's desk/office sometimes. Like a Monday and a Thursday in, or something similar. Not full time tho. I really don't want to go back to 9-5 office life. I'd rather split time.

change though. If you like stopping by someone’s desk, that’s going to be tougher when less and less people are at those desks. When companies are hiring staff who are already remote and won’t ever have a desk in the office, it will change the dynamic.

Then you have the long term impact - the auto industry is going to suffer because people will be buying cars less often if they don’t have to make daily commutes. Families who had multiple cars might be fine with just one, and since they are putting less miles on the cars they have (and spending less time in them) they’ll be likely to keep those cars longer.

If leadership prizes face-time then their teams are going to keep coming into the office for the sake of their careers.

Plus I think human beings generally prefer face time anyway... you often miss body language and other cues that are important for communication as well when you're on a teleconference or Zoom meeting, especially when you're not forced to be on camera.

So even if you're not in the office to see your boss, you'll work out a schedule with your peers, teammates or office friends to be in the office at the same time so you can communicate fully.

I may come in Tuesday and Thursdays, you may come in Wed and Friday but we'll compromise when necessary to build our working relationship.

and I don’t want to go back. My company sent out a survey and I said as much. It must have been pretty heavy on the WFH side, because they announced a computer based phone system, in the works. We had already been told back in August to plan on being home for the rest of 2020. We’re kicking ass with everyone at home...fuck that building.

Haha @ fuck that building. Fuck mine too! My bosses have already said out loud that they don’t expect to have us back in the office during the first half of 2021. So they’re seeing it too. And even when/if we’re back, I think they’ll be forced into some kind of rotation. Almost no one wants to return to 5-7 days a week of commutes and sitting right next to some other rusty mfer who could show up sick and get everyone else sick. Every year I’ve worked there, we have had colds float through the office. Some person would show up runny nosed with wet ass eyes, hacking and coughing all over shit, and then it would start.

i think i will end up having to go back at some point. they're telling us now it wont be before April.
WFH a day or two a week would be nice. but WFH full time is not for me.

In response to Reply # 0

This one surprised me. Seed companies were completely sold out last spring. I'm gonna shop for my 2021 seeds now to avoid that again.

Thinking about packaging up some of my heirloom seeds. My garden is overgrown.
