nothing "gave it away" really, but i was thinking about how to explain white privilege to my dad, who doesn't believe it exists (im now at the point where i maintain the bare minimum relationship with him that will still allow me to inherit his money. real talk)

at any rate, i dont know how or why it popped into my head, but i remembered in high school, i went to a boarding school for jr and sr year. I got busted both years with weed.
School policy was that 1st drug offense = suspension, 2nd offense = expulsion.

well, when i got busted jr year, the dean of the art department went to bat for me and got my suspension waived.
but when i got busted my sr year - like a couple weeks from graduation - the scene was me and my dad in the office of the chancellor of the whole school, w my dad trying to convince the chancellor not to expel me and just let me graduate in a few weeks.

and i thought back on it like, "no way i graduate from that school if i was black" no way. first of all, no mercy for a black teen smoking weed, that goes without saying. But also, it was two old white guys in a wood paneled room deciding my fate, and my dad "spoke the language" - i dont see the chancellor rolling over for a middle aged black guy the way he did for my dad.

and of course this is all hindsight, and who knows really?
But c'mon - my black ass would have been expelled if my ass was black - theres no doubt in my mind

regardless of the occasional drama that brought to the Boards, you still knew who the fuck was who and what they were about...even between reunions, there were many local meetups

That is, this is the same debate we have when it comes to issues of Sexism and I wouldn't be consistent if I didn't see it that way.

So yeah, the same way I feel that any and all woman gets to decide whether I am a sexist or not, I don't think any and all black people get to decide whether someone is racist. In other words, just because a woman calls me a sexist means that I am sexist and just because a black person calls someone a racist means they are racist.

ESPECIALLY ONLINE where people don't do nuance and name-calling is the easiest way to get an upper hand in an online disagreement. I've been called all sorts of things online (this very day I got called a member of the demon-possessed radical left) that no one would call me IRL for the same behavior.

I skimmed through this post but I am not sure what Stringer Bell did here that was racist*. I always had the same impression about Denny. I've asked before somebody to articulate or point to a post of his that was racist and haven't seen it. I think they are mostly guilty of trying to have way more nuanced conversations than they should attempt to have with strangers online. I say all this not defend any white okayplayer, but I am aware how slippery the slope is when people can call someone racist or a misogynist and don't have to back it up.

On another note, I will say I have come to see that all of this seems to be a part of a rule I've seen online where there is an inverse relationship between real-life perceived group social standing and the license you have to drag people online. That is, the more oppressed your group is perceived to be in IRL the more freedom you have to attack folks online with little consequences. Women can attack me, but a white woman can't attack black men. Everyone can attack white men and no one can attack a transgendered black woman**. It seems mad petty for more privileged IRL people to complain about how they are treated online, but I don't think it makes it not a thing. A corollary of this is there is always someone who can call you out***

So men, particularly white men, shouldn't get too much into a hissy fit about treatment online. You got to keep it in perspective. I would gladly make the trade-off of treated worst online if it meant that I was treated better IRL.

Those are a lot of words that can be summed up with, this discussion has been mostly trashed and just wouldn't happen IRL (which is probably for the good).

Oh yeah, I was also wondering how the half-white creator of this site would feel about this. Would she have to get a half "IW" symbol?

*And I am not going on a limb to saying either of these cats are not racist. I think all white people are racist and all men are sexist to a certain extent. I am just curious if they are making racist statements or are more racist than most.

**This isn't to say women or transgendered people have it "easier" online. I am sure they get harassed the most. I am only talking about what kind of harassment is "condoned" online. That is say racist and sexist shit online, you get dragged and can lose your job. Doubt that would happen if it were directed at black men and definitely not white men.

Yet, they're CONSTANTLY in posts about Black issues and not in a defending Black people kind of way.

... but haven't found the proper way to verbalize or put into writing. A few friends of mine spend ALL their time online finding ways to defend white people and/or men *against* racism and sexism but zero time combatting either thing or uplifting the black community or women.

I think we hug too close to "I can't have bad views because I'm a good person" and that flares up our defense mechanism when we see something that pushes against our views from a "morally higher" perspective asking us to be better.

I had blinders toward the gay and trans community for a long time. Not in a hateful sense, but just being dismissive, not bothering to try and understand beyond the little that I already knew or thought I knew, etc.

Thankfully I got past that but you're right, some things take longer than others to unlearn no matter how "good" you otherwise are or think you are/try to be. And I'm sure I have a million other blind spots that I just haven't been called out on yet and don't realize I have.

I live it and do it and you can't find a woman who I know who would say otherwise. That goes from the women in my family and the women I work with to the strippers at the strip club (from back in the day of course).

I also try to give black men the benefit of the doubt until they prove otherwise and I that seems to put me at odds with folks here. I don't think Kobe purposely assaulted that woman, I don't think Shaun King is a thief scam artist, I think Nate Parker got a raw deal, I think Talib has a right to defend himself from a woman who picked a fight by attacking him, I think Jaguar Wright is a crazy bitter lunatic trying to tear everyone down because she's miserable. I also think Bill Cosby is a rapist, Snoop Dogg is an actual misogynist who gets a free pass because he only targets black women (Damn it, I already said I am not going to try and prove ish to you).

You can try and add that all together and paint me as some sort of misogynist but I also know that a lot of the opinions expressed here are strictly online fringe opinions you just dont' hear in IRL. I know because I am constantly having these same discussions in real life with strong smart opinionated diverse black women and they never go like the arugments you have here. And it's not that I don't get schooled in real life, but it's not the dumb shit you see here*.

As far as the white people go, I get it, you want a "safe space" where you can talk without white people chiming in. But this site has never been that. They will chime in. and it's okay if they disagree with you.

This place use to be a lot smarter and when someone said some dumb shit a smart and thoughtful OKP would school them or properly clown the shit out of them. Now days you have people pointing to post like this and claiming its evidence of being attacked or negative?

And I think this is where your generation* and mine diverge a bit. Where as yall will recognize a white person not directly aligned against you as an ally. Where as my generation is coming to understand the harm by allowing space for white centering and framing.

That having to still cater to and tip toe around the ways that their white perspectives are damaging, even in alliance, we depersonalize ourselves in our own lives/struggles thus leading to worse outcomes that we bare the burden of disproportionately to them.

*I think this is also a regional/geographic difference.
