"Which US city's iconic / cliché food *actually* is the bomb?"

I'm thinking Philly Cheesesteaks (never had them), Chicago deep dish pizza (never had it), Maryland crab cakes? Never. Maine lobster? nope

I lived in NY for a couple of years and yes the pizza and bagels are divine goodness to me

Curious which city's iconic foods really are the true killas, and which ones are (highly) overrated

specifically....
Vinegar based sauced in my particular region....

It doesn't align with my Detroit wife's taste buds.....lol...I remember the first time I exposed her to it she was like "Wait....what is THIS??? You said BBQ...where the sauce at??"

We call ribs, ribs....
We call bbq chicken, bbq chicken...
We call brisket, brisket...

I believe some regions of the country approach it different.

People will tell you about all the pits in Austin but an hour outside of Austin is so much better. Any of them, Blacks, Smittys (our family preference), or Kreuz is better than anything Austin offers.

Hell I’d go to Elgin before I waited an hour in line in Austin.

I get that "tacos" and "Sandwiches" is mad general, but I've never had a bad taco in Socal or sandwich in New York.

You can get a seemingly nondescript Italian cold cut at a corner bodega on Atlantic Ave in Brooklyn and it'll f*cking blow your mind.

like yeah, I'd had hundreds of tacos in fast food restaurants and mexican restaurants and all that. I also have fam in texas and new mexico, so I'd been pretty deep into TexMex (which I like, but it's kind of it's own thing), but moving to SoCal was eye opening.

SoCal taco scene (and mexican food in general) was like a revelation. Each shop/truck has it's own method of cooking, different cuts, tortillas, and then the SALSA is a whole other level. There's so much quality out here that a weak ass taco shop won't survive.

In a generation of swine, the one-eyed pig is king.

I've never tried one away from home but several spots here knock it out of the park.

>I'm thinking Philly Cheesesteaks (never had them), Chicago
>deep dish pizza (never had it), Maryland crab cakes?

These 3 are all fantastic although I've never been to Philly to have an authentic sandwich.

(gumbo, etouffee, crawfish boils, etc)

I think po boys are overrated tbh tho (bread brings it down).

Maryland crabcakes always hit the spot. (And if we being honest mumbo sauce in dc is pretty good and worth the acknowledgment)

New York pizza and bagels are the best.

I (surprisingly) fuck with goetta from cincinnati.

Chicago deep dish is overrated imo. Chicago's restaurant Portillos ( and all italian beef places) are overrated as shit too.

Imma say detroit style coneys are good.

In response to Reply # 0

I'm racking my brain...

There are a million wing joints, so maybe the "lemon pepper wet," but I don't think anyone is coming to Atlanta for that experience.

Everything else is just Southern cooking that can be found throughout the Southeast.

lemon pepper wet is just a variation on the classic

but you're right, it's definitely not destination food.

By “worth it” I mean sitting on the toilet with the RING OF FIRE for 45 minutes and hating your life.

The “gentrified” hot chicken at places like Hattie B’s is decent enough, but if you’re brave enough and want the OG experience, order anything above medium heat at Bolton’s and give it a shot. All the sides are trash so you know it’s legit.

Speaking of trash sides...

Are fish sandwiches a thing everywhere in the south? Hella planks of fried whiting in between two slices of shitty white bread with raw onions, pickles, mustard, and hot sauce. Ed’s Fish & Pizza in north Nashville FTW.

Actual fruit in water ice?

We have one in Charlotte. Always amazed me ATL and other southern cities didn’t have them much earlier. Seems like a no brainer.

Never got into the pretzels but there is a pretzel dog in center city in a shitty ally on 15th or 16th I believe by a Dunkin’ Donuts that was crack.

It can vary a bit but:

First, you pick 2 out of the following: home fries, pasta salad, Mac salad, baked beans, mac and cheese, French fries, and other similar food items.

Then you pick a hot dog or cheeseburger....or maybe both. Some places have eggs as an option.

Then you top your plate with meat sauce, onions, and mustard.

It might look something like this:
