"Trump Admitted On Tape To Intentionally Downplaying Covid Threat"
Wed Sep-09-20 11:39 AM by Reeq

several audio clips in link:
https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/09/politics/bob-woodward-rage-book-trump-coronavirus/index.html

theres audio back in march where he clearly acknowledges how dangerous the virus is...quotes how much more deadly it is than the flu...quotes how it affects young people and not just old people...and so on...and he was still out in public playing it down.

it also means he *deliberately* took steps to kneecap the federal govt response to the virus and put lives at risk despite being fully knowledgeable about the havoc it could wreak.

and its all on tape. no anonymous sources. the horse is the source.

if anything mattered at all anymore...trump and any republican who still supports him after this would be banished to the phantom zone by the american public.

this is a great example.

authoritarians/autocrats around the world played *up* the danger of the virus and used the threat to consolidate power and strategically usurp the authority of parliaments, judiciaries, etc.

trump played down the virus because he most likely thought the 'panic' would have a negative effect on his re-election. and in turn...the failed administrative response still brought on fear and panic...cratered the economy...and became the #1 weapon used against him in his re-election. meanwhile the politicians who publicly treated the virus seriously saw their approval ratings soar and their political standings for re-election greatly increase.

when it comes to the MAGA reaction...

-IF it's a story that involves sources THEN the tactic is to question the sources, scoff at use of anonymous sources and keep it moving.

-IF it's documented evidence of Trump showing contempt for "them" THEN deny the core statement, lean on Trump's use of ambiguous/open ended statements and say "this is out of context, what he REALLY means is..."

-IF it's documented evidence of Trump showing contempt for something important to MAGA culture (i.e., religion, military, etc), THEN cut off the nose. Lean on ambiguous language and then state "well, this thing was not important to US to begin with"

-IF it's something very clearly bad, with documented evidence and stated extremely clearly with zero ambiguity and there is no way to squirm out of the discussion...

THEN approach the following flow:

1. is the disparaging statement or reprehensible thing on or about shithole countries or "them"? If YES then agree, "Yes, shithole country/people or thing is destroying your hard work and America".
If NO go to 2.

2. is the disparaging statement or reprehensible thing on or about MAGA and "us"? If YES say nothing. Nothing at all. Find a liberal/democrat concept you feel is tearing the country apart. Complain about that. Do not let up.

So - nothing. Not a goddamn thing will be said. They don't self reflect on the shit that you think matters.

then i can give him a pass.

im not sure releasing the tapes earlier would have changed much in our collective response to the virus and saved significantly more lives (trump and republicans would just double down on whatever new goalpost they chose).

but if the timing of this (right before early voting starts) helps get him out of office so a competent president can come in and try to right this ship...then thats an overwhelming net positive imo.

i was more annoyed at the michael schmidt (nytimes) shit where he deliberately held on to scoops that would have been major developments up to and through impeachment...but now nobody even cares about.

would have changed any of that?

im not.

spell out a hypothetical chain of events where we get from woodward releasing the audio to a dramatic change of political/public behavior.

Do we know for a fact the US wouldn't have lost close to 200k lives nah we don't, but the country deserved to have the truth from it's most powerful office.

If this wasn't downplayed for months we wouldn't have lost as many lives as we did. I'm standing on that.

is such a moral failure of individuals. A complete abdication of the uniqueness, shortness, and frailty of the human experience

It's a bottom five bankrupt character trait. Just completely inhumane.

Niggas aint even paid to not think of themselves, they just depersonalize their own experience willingly.

political decisions/considerations/outcomes affect living/dying.

instead of *just* moralizing woodwards internal decision making process...im saying that i think the way things ultimately played out could help save a lot more lives than the way you wanted things to play out.

thats a moral stance as well. and one that considers the greater social good.

and you dont seem to be disputing any of that.

My experience on this planet isn't validated by a fucked up system of laws and rules that overwhelmingly were designed and maintained to benefit and entrench white supremacy.

And the only cure for that is defining reality as it occurs not trying to shape what may be down the road banking on what humans will buy

That's why climate collapse is so important to talk about, rape culture, the 1619 project, gender identity, segregation, redlining, racism ... etc ... it's not enough to treat these studies as academic and how and who they'll play to ... it's a betrayal of a human experience to downplay them because of what someone else may think of them.

My life and the lives of those I love matter more to me than "politics" and elections.

Because it's easy to divorce the emotion of what a betrayal this is if you can ascribe some hope to it.

I think that's horseshit.

There will always be a way to validate something like this, or a war, or someone getting their neck squashed for 8 minutes until they lose their life ... because the idea is that "some good will surely come from this" ... and while that may be true, folks constantly have to ignore and downplay the bad else they evaluate what it means to sacrifice and not demand more from their own lives.

I demand more. This isn't good enough.

i believe politics has a dramatic effect on lives. especially that shit that takes place in politics that people dont pay attention to or dont think will affect their lives that much. and thats something a lot of people are either unintentionally ignorant to or willfully dismissive of.

i dont know why people treat politics as a separate track inconsequential to their daily lives. thats an almost uniquely american thing (among modernized western societies).

1 political outcome/decision...in the form of a judicial appointment, a law passed, an election altering oppo drop or scandal, etc...can have tangible ramifications for several *generations*.

i dont see how anyone who knows anything about history can disagree with that.

shit you can pretty much directly pin almost everything happening now to a ripple from the election of george w bush in 2000.

if you believe that an audio drop could have lowered deaths back in march or april...i dont understand how you can criticize me for my belief that even more deaths could be prevented by the current timing. its about saving real lives right?

it seems like something we should just be agreeing/disagreeing on the hypothetical results of and not soapboxing about how one is more morally superior (especially if the alternative may actually be better for life/society).

I'm saying it's inconsequential on what it means today.

I have documented proof that the president is lying about a pandemic matters more than I have documented proof that the president lied about a pandemic.

It's unknowable how are what would've changed. My position was and continues to be if you can save people you at least try, if you see people hurting you at least try ... that so many people aren’t willing to just try and they we reward that with “what will it change” is a failure.

Maybe one day I look past it, but that day can't be today. I am human. I am disgusted.

and one of the kids at the childrens hospital that my girl and i 'adopted' is still dealing with some hellish form of pulmonary fibrosis made worse by covid.

i harbor no resentment toward woodward for any of that.

i do however genuinely believe that the audio dropping right now could potentially help alter the course of history and save more lives by increasing the odds of donald trump being replaced.

that to me overshadows whatever woodwards motivation may or may not have been.

It's very sad on my part that I had Woodward in somewhat high regard, but hoarding these tapes just to pump him his book sales that probably would have been high anyway is major clownish behavior.

Sad on so many levels.

Truly, truly disturbing.

and like you said...now we have a quantifiable measure of the damage of trump playing down the virus and its something he is gonna have to defend right before the election and in debates.

its post labor day too...when most people really start paying attention to the election. so this spells out in clear detail that trumps failure to protect the american people was deliberate and blood is on his hands.

not to mention...it comes right in the midst of trump and his allies making a big deal about reporting based on anonymous sources. and now you have trump saying this shit in his own words on tape so it blows all of that hand wringing up.

if i had to choose between releasing it early or releasing it now...i still think releasing it now presents the best possible chance for a net positive outcome.

my main concern is that holding onto those tapes hurt what could have been a better response to COVID-19 at the time Trump made those comments. Trump could have been shamed into making something of a national policy for the pandemic. More importantly, more of the state and local government officials could have taken things more seriously due to how much of an absolute idiot Trump appeared to be in those same tapes. Lives could have been saved and serious quick progress could have been made much earlier on a national level. I'm not too deeply concerned about how this will or won't play in Novemeber's election.

There's not exactly a shortage of things Trump said/did to downplay and deflect this pandemic from the start. i dont see how audio of him saying he's downplaying it to avoid panic changes that. it's just another clip.

so i'm saying it would have had zero impact then but potential impact in November (though not necessarily convinced of that either)

any amount of lives that could had been saved by releasing this back in spring would have been worth it.

the whole narrative of this pandemic could have changed. peoples behaviors could have changed.

even if nothing changed it would have been the right thing to do.

who instinctively attack other outlets who scoop them right?

like the way they circled the wagons to discredit outlets like buzzfeed multiple times for trump/russia/barr/etc stories but rush to defend haberman, peter baker, etc.

where was this nytimes dude when nytimes reporter michael schmidt held on to several important scoops for his recent book?

like the trump walter reed hospital visit being so serious that pence had to be placed on standby?
https://twitter.com/CNN/status/1300599297721937927

or the mueller investigation being secretly/intentionally curtailed by rosenstein to prevent mueller from exploring trumps financial ties russia?
https://twitter.com/nytmike/status/1300085848596262912

now those stories are now past the point where people even care about them. but they could have done a lot of good if the public was knowledgeable when schmidt actually got hold of the scoop.

this woodward story still has the potential to do more good than any of the schmidt shit he held in the chamber.

they can spare me the selective outrage.

Wait, what? Woodward had Trump on tape that the coronavirus was airborne BACK IN FEBRUARY (seems he learned this from Xi) and sat on it, presumably to release his book closer to the election? As we've been saying, the US crisis is elite failure *across* the political spectrum.

i gotta give him and his campaign credit. the rapid response has been on point lately with the woodward story, the military losers/suckers story, etc.

it usually takes dems a short while to get their consultant conference calls, non committal non offensive legally strict attack language, etc in order.

but biden has been coming right out with pointed attacks and specific information to effectively support them.

to the point that trump supporters are alleging theres a conspiracy to give biden the news drops beforehand so he can pre-empt his messaging and be ready to go (something that the trump admin and fox news actually do).

to win the Presidency ever again in my life if Trump wins. If Trump beats Joe fucking Biden, there literally is no middle.

If "the middle" and/or moderate republicans can't be swayed by everything from this to kids in cages, then FUCK them.

This election won't be proof that "run to the middle" is the best strategy in my mind even if Joe wins, but if Trump STILL wins then get that 80's political egg head shit out of here.

#2 Its odd that we are so programmed to view everything through the lens of an election now. There is no question Woodard should have released these back in Feb or whatever. No question he waited for his own gain. That is fucking evil no matter how you slice it. Even if something good comes out of it, its still fucking evil.

"Its good he waited"...oh word? He waited for his paycheck, and people died, got severely ill, kids can't go to school, etc.

#3 Because he waited, the right is going to shift the convo on this to "Why now? Where has this been" etc etc. Its going to be painted as opportunistic, etc.

pad their pockets to any Republican who will say anything remotely critical of Trump have become folk heroes to some.

This Woodward is a hero shit is sort of reminding me of the "Its Mueller Time" memes that flooded my timeline from some pretty hardcore lefties.

Hardcore liberals were literally treating the FBI like the Avengers were assembling...how'd that turn out?

The FBI, Woodward, Bush (lol), Scaramucci, Romney, whoever...these dues are not your friends.

I don't know how anyone could tell someone who lost a loved one to COVID - or really anyone for that matter- that sitting on damning information that might have saved lives was the right call because it *might* help sway the mythical moderate. The same moderate who wasn't quite swayed by kids in cages, white supremacy, grabbing pussies, bromance with Putin, etc...

Especially considering he didn't sit on it for the election, he sat on it for his fucking book.

if any of you are still thinking about sitting out the election.

this is basically what hitler did with the nazi 'peoples court'. install political allies as judges to legislate from the bench and drum up preordained politically beneficial rulings.

it also shows how extreme trump/conservatives are where even the suggestion of this is perfectly fine because they believe that the current slate of right wing activist judges isnt radical enough.

edit: tom cotton deliberately posted this after the announcement.

Fascinating somebody like Woodward who has done such historical work describing the relationship between the forest and the trees to so utterly miss the point here.

The ethical principal seems pretty simple: if you have evidence that the President is lying in a way that directly leads to people's death, you should share it as soon as possible to prevent future deaths.

Not every fucking thing is about an election.

It’s a tough call IRT when to go public

and as hard as it may be for some to admit

IMO, if Woodward releases this info months ago...it wouldn’t have any impact

It’s almost as if the body count is the evidence, proof of his lies.

It’s f’d up, but I think it had to play out this way to even make a dent in the bubble

...and even closing in on 200K deaths, folks are still defending it...

i.e. the information WAS out there

The people that believed his lies wouldn’t have given this interview a second thought if it was released months earlier, IMO

Feels like people are projecting onto Woodward here

He’s not the problem.

Seeding doubt. What we didn't know was that he was saying one thing in private audience and then saying the complete opposite to the public, relentlessly.

It's the reason that Burr disappeared from public eye (in addition to the stock trading, actually in align with the stock trading) because he was downplaying the severity in public, while advising private people to bunker down.

The stories about the stock dumps were published around the same time

In February...?

https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2020/4/1/21202900/kelly-loeffler-stock-sales-coronavirus-pandemic

Feinstein was in there too

I’m saying, Woodward releases this info...whenever people think it was appropriate

It doesn’t have the impact.

Attacking the messenger is way down on the bottom of the priority list in light of this revelation

Your partner goes for an STD test even though it’s only been y’all two for a year, plausible deniability but shaky and suspicious.

Your partner is on tape with a newspaper clipping of the date getting fucked, no plausible deniability.

And again, my point has been that impact is unknowable, sense of duty and scope of responsibility have to form people’s core ... and it doesn’t for the most part.

In response to Reply # 88

Our moral action in the world is often fucked up and messy, owing largely to the chaotically woven relationships of power in the modern world. That makes deciding the right course of action difficult, so I'm open to a reading of this whole thing that sounds like "I believe his intentions were good but Bob Woodward really fucked this up."

But anything short of that means reducing the weight of *any* of our decisions to endlessly speculative conversation about impact when there's a pretty clear, concrete way to evaluate what Woodward's decision meant here. The federal government abdicated their responsibility on COVID, which means that people were left on their own to take care of themselves.

So, if sharing this audio back when it was recorded would have prevented the loss of a single person's life by simply convincing them, as an individual, not to believe the President and to treat COVID as a serious threat to their life, then that's the relevant site to evaluate "impact." He took a pass on that. If it was for profit, he's vile and should repent before God. If it was because he got twisted about what the right way to reveal this was, then he chose wrong - and we should make sure to tell him so.

In response to Reply # 95

Our psychotic discourse notwithstanding, the American political landscape is wall to wall normal people. We can't give up on normal people, or we'll lose for good. But maybe more importantly: normal people trust the federal government on an instinctual, not an intellectual level. It's the great gift and curse of post-war liberalism - they created institutions that appeared so trustworthy for so long that normal people take their proper function for granted. I think what that means practically speaking is that normal people will understand and accept something as undeniably true as "The President is a giant liar" but not really assimilate that information into a pattern of action because every moment of normal people's lives in contemporary liberalism has been built on believing the government just won't let them die. So put aside Trump supporters for a moment and think of the people who blithely assume that of course the federal government has their interest and safety at heart. Some of those people believed the President because believing the President is what Americans are trained to do.

Some of those people got sick and died. And I think they were very reachable and that knowing this would have helped.

I could be wrong, but we'll never know because the decision was made for us.

In addition to that, Woodward already has a proven record in terms of his in-house White House books from his past works. He didn't have to sit on those tapes just for the sake of pumping up his royalty checks.

I wonder how many folks will boycott buying this upcoming book out of principle of being irate with the dude.

Ideally, it would bring some people out of the woodwork to vote against him, but I don't see any awful- ahem, deplorable- thing that he can say or do that would case any significant portion of his base to turn against him, and THEN vote Biden.

I think he can say that word in camera, and they'd either call it a deep fake, or justify it. They'll say some stupid shit about how god can use even the most deeply flawed people for the greater good of his people and his glory, and the USA itself.

Others would simply say that Black people say it all the time, and the hyper woke lefty liberal commie snowflakes have a double standard.

Others still? They'd be fucking overjoyed at the President saying that shit on camera, because they'd see it as yet another green light to do what they do.... but more, and more overtly.

yes, there's still quite a lot of headroom for people to be more gleefully and overtly racist, and they'd use it as an excuse to eat up more of that space.

He could, on video, call his base as a bunch of illiterate, superstitious. cousin fucking morons who vote for him because they're too stupid to realize he's only using them for political power, and that he wipes his ass from his morning shit with pages from the bible....

.....And they'd say that he's no different from any other politician, they're all manipulative liars, and that he's still better than that ultra liberal socialist Joe Biden.

"Woodward tells us — but they too remained silent.

And so, for the most part, does Woodward himself. His scoops derive from his ability to convince people who should know better that he’s really on their side; it’s a journalistic technique that requires the reporter to flatter rather than challenge.

At times, he even seems to slip from obsequiousness into the role of mentor: listening to Trump’s justifications for his request that the Ukrainian president launch an investigation of Joe Biden, for instance, Woodward pauses his questions to offer Trump some unsolicited advice. “I’m going to tell you something from my experience,” he says. “I’m telling you, from too many decades of experience in cases like this, if you apologized it would go away.” Trump naturally ignores this guidance, but the reader can’t help but wonder: Why is a journalist giving political counsel to the subject of his reporting?

Later, in another bizarre exchange, Woodward urges Trump to display a tad more empathy toward racial justice protesters. (The president, true to form, has been exulting in his ability “to send in the military” to deal with the protesters, whom he describes, variously, as “these poor radical lefts” and as “arsonists . . . thugs . . . anarchists” and “very bad people.”) Woodward, in response, attempts to explain “White privilege” to an incredulous Trump. “Do you have any sense that that privilege has isolated ?” the reporter asks. “And that we have to work our way out of it to understand the anger and the pain, particularly, Black people feel?”

@realDonaldTrump
Bob Woodward had my quotes for many months. If he thought they were so bad or dangerous, why didn’t he immediately report them in an effort to save lives? Didn’t he have an obligation to do so? No, because he knew they were good and proper answers. Calm, no panic!

the ones who uncritically inhale MSNBC programming and especially the "Russiagate" (as 2016 root cause of failure) bullshit.

and even Ryan would acknowledge Trump being colossal failure here.

NO ONE admits the "white voter" problem we have in this country though. Either party of the duopoly, and much of the left alike.
