"Milwaukee Bucks Boycott Game 5 of NBA Playoffs"
Wed Aug-26-20 03:23 PM by PROMO

https://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/29747523/bucks-not-taking-court-game-5-vs-magic

The Milwaukee Bucks have yet to come out to the court for Game 5 on Wednesday with the Orlando Magic and there's been some discussion within the Bucks about a boycott.

NBA officials have gone into the Milwaukee locker room, sources told ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski and Malika Andrews.

Tipoff for the game in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, was set for 4 p.m. ET.

The Magic were seen taking shots pregame, while the Bucks' half of the court was empty. The Magic left the court with 3:56 left until the scheduled tip.

Top NBA executives were outside of the Milwaukee locker room, but haven't gone inside, a source told ESPN.

Folks would absolutely lose their minds. I'd like to think that if the players hit enough of the right people in their pockets, then some folks would sit up straight & pay attention.

Which is odd because they are talking about the boycotts...

Seems pretty obvious to me but it’s hilarious how they can’t even see the impact.

In response to Reply # 39

not saying rash negatively. but it was just abrupt.

the bucks made a decision and the rest of the teams just quickly felt pressured to follow suit. the magic was even on the court warming up and ready to play before the bucks decided to stay in the locker room.

so it wasnt necessarily a unified gesture that everyone decided on.

And same as you that's not a criticism. I respect the hell out of them for making that decision, and was glad to see the rest of the league follow suit.

I don't know whether or not they're making the "right" decision regarding resuming play. Seems like a lot of the more "active" players in terms of activism were seriously conflicted. I read reports that LeBron was mostly silent when it became clear that the players would be voting to resume play. Sounds like he was in favor of calling off the season, which is a huge revelation. He's been working on some great things in the leadup to the election, and this leads me to believe he wanted to be more active in the protests too. Which, considering the impact cancelling the season would have on his legacy (he's obviously got a good chance at another chip this season), that says a lot about where he stands with everything.

I also read that Jaylen Brown asked the players that if they cancelled the season, would they just go home and chill, or would they actually use that time to take to the streets and get in the trenches with the people ? I'm sure that impacted some players' decisions.

all we can really hope for is that the ball that was set rolling doesn't stop and it seems like it won't as far as athletes go.

10%? 20?

And it also begs the question what % of a paycut would all of us be willing to take for a chance for change?

Again, not being an asshole. I don't know the answer.

Either way, I really think they could start their own league. I do.

Could you imagine? A black own professional basketball league that is owned/operated/played by the biggest stars in the world?

The past couple years has shown that 'tradition' isn't nearly as important in the NBA as other leagues.

People aren't NBA fans. They are Bron, KD, AD, Steph, etc fans.

like, them taking that pay cut.

i guess what i mean is i can't judge them for not doing it.

especially now. because not every player is LeBron who doesn't really actually "need" their basketball salary. some do.

so until they are more organized they probably can't make that real sacrifice.

check out today's episode of the Higher Learning podcast because they elaborated on it much better than i'm trying to do but they compared it to the Bus Boycott and how this is different but what it might take for this to be like that in its execution.

Which is understandable. Cats are angry, frustrated & very emotional. They absolutely put the issue into the spotlight and I applaud them for that. They have a huge platform and a lot of people paid attention to what they were feeling.

But they should have kept a play stoppage in their back pockets. Now, everyone knows that they won't really disrupt the season. That leverage is gone.

My thoughts aren't fully formed here cuz I'm conflicted but

The players have the power- moreso than any other league. Its star driven.

Shit, there's probably enough money and interest they could start their own league.

Look at the bubble format. Invest/pool their money to cop one facility, and set up a league owned by the players. Get their own sponsors. Copy the bubble format to minimize expenses. Etc.

The players don't need the league. They don't need owners who donate to LAPD, etc. The league needs the players.

Why cave after a day?

I *do* think it was rushed, and they could have clarified what they wanted to come out of it, but they should have stayed strong.

Now it just looks like they didn't want to lose money. Which I get, but the optics on that? The conversation just changed from why they went on strike to why they gave up. So the benefit is minimized a ton.

Which brings me to just how poisoned beyond anything resembling repair America is.

I see talks of general strikes and stuff from leftists, but NBA players can't strike for more than a day? How we going to ask each other to strike, workers at wal-mart to strike, etc...when folks are in here saying Chris Paul shouldn't risk his millions?

And of course, theres typical Amerikkka responses like "they should donate HALF their salary!" !??

Players strike for social justice and are the villains to some.
On the other hand, they could only last a day cuz they couldn't leave money on the table.

Just poisoned all over.

Athletes from teams that play in Milwaukee wanted to make a statement and their brothers stood with them.

How many owners out there donating to police? To the GOP?

How many NBA sponsors also advertise on Fox news?

How many "I'm not racists" NBA fans just want politics left out of their past time?

Shit how many people on OkayPlayer really just want the playoffs back?

I get the anger.. I get the boycott and it being a bit rushed.

but it definitely opens the floodgates for a ton of excuses for why it wasn’t a good move or a hollow statement.

I almost wished it would’ve just been Milwaukee teams but I’m not mad at them for trying to take a stand.

One of the reporters said a player asked some of the players who wanted to cancel the season if they were going home to their families or going I the trenches to continue to fight.

I guess the real question is where are professional athletes place on this fight? Where do they serve us best as advocates for change? Hopefully they continue to put pressure on big business.

I heard Lebron walked out after challenging owners to do more.

The biggest benefit/impact the strike had was it got people talking.

Now the convo has changed. So the benefits of a rushed strike are all but erased.

And players who looked like heroes, are now villains or whatever.

And again, lets say Trump doesn't leave office or some shit...the only real thing people can do is a general strike...how can we ask someone with zero savings to strike when these dudes couldn't last more than a day?

Thats fair but it also misses a big point-

There are a lot entitled white nba fans who essentially demand to be entertained. From outright racists to "shut up and dribble" to "aw man why does everything have to be political?" dudes.

Those guys should have been denied their fucking hoops, man. Straight up.

No changing racist minds...but shaking up the apathetic, more low key racist ones?

And hurt some pockets in the process? Owners, sponsors, etc?

I don't know dude's name on NBATV...that why guy with the hair, the main host...homeboy seemed outright irritated at the strike.

Pointing to $400 million and Black Lives Matter branding like "what else do they want?"

So yeah, more from the owners. And the sponsors, and the NBA media, and the fans, and everyone.

Like I said, they should legit pool their money and start their own league.

have a good bit of leeway as to how they conduct their elections.

like some counties are mailing out absentee ballot applications to every registered voter in the county, some counties have different voting equipment, different voting hours, different early voting periods, etc.

i dont think theres gonna be much issue here but its not above republicans to try/sue.

Report: LeBron James, More Sought Barack Obama's Advice During NBA Protests
BLAKE SCHUSTER
AUGUST 28, 2020

Amid a work stoppage that forced the NBA to postpone the playoffs until Saturday, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James and a group of players reportedly sought advice from former President Barack Obama on how to proceed with their protest.

According to Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium, Obama advised James, Chris Paul and others to resume playing in an effort to further their message against systemic racism during a Wednesday call. That followed a contentious meeting among players inside the NBA bubble during which James, the Lakers and the Los Angeles Clippers voted to end the season following the police shooting of Jacob Blake in Kenosha, Wisconsin on Sunday.
