not sure how the repeat value will be but I played thru taking kids to school this morning and I was feeling most of it. I don't think its Life is Good good but its solid, nothing as bad as Summer on Smash but doesn't quite hit the highs of that album at least on first listen. Some of the songs are mad short and wish were a bit longer. The features didn't bother me like I thought they might.

copying what I put in Lessson. I'll give it a few more listens and see what grabs me the most later.

like the beat switch on The Cure. like the horns on 10 Points. Some of these lyrics are HELL, and not in a good way.

Nas is one of the best storytellers so even the cringy shit still kept my attention.

"The Cure" is the clear standout for me. "Full Circle" is cool, but I wish it had a harder beat.

For me it’s 6-8. The rest of it is pretty much a latter career Nas that I’m quite happy with. It’s a shame that some of the doper songs that you’d want Nas to blackout on are shorter than those dull few in the middle though..

I’m nas over jay all day and he’s aged better, but some of his lyrics feel aged in a bad way especially given what we know about his recent history. At its worst Just feels like a lot of grumpy middle aged man woman blaming.

Him setting the scene with his story telling on Car #85.... you can just picture that shit like a scene in a film— hell you can feel it like you were there. That’s his genius right there and always has been.

That shit is hard.

Blue Benz and 27 Summers are also hard tho.

Nas is spittin on this, and it kinda has everything you want from a Nas album withe exception of maybe a song where he just spazzes without a chorus. A lot of it has a classic Nas feel without sounding too retro. Really liked All Bad. One of the cases where two of my favorite artists made a song I really like. The beat switch on The Cure dope.

The loose theme here about staying clear of health problems from doing too much... I can appreciate that.

Get you some wheatgrass.

Of course there is NY State of Mind and Thief’s Theme etc but truth is, Nas is in his zone over smooth production that allows his lyrics to be the focus and for the introspective, stream of consciousness to flow.

Nas doing what Nas does

...sounds fresh on the Hit-Boy production...

That is a great match

The autotune sounds so out of place in this context

minor issue...but it f’d up the couple of songs it was on IMO

i wish the firm track sounded more like a track by the firm but thats a minor gripe.

nothing groundbreaking here. and prolly middle of the road for nas. but its better than 99.9% of the shit floating around out here.

In my first 3 listens I kinda hate that song most. It was the song I was most excited for as a Paak fan too, but feels like such a waste— lyrically it is one of those songs I mentioned above that just feels like grumpy old head looking back on life blaming — women— was since no lines really stood out to me.

I mean.. he’s top 5 but I’m not sure why a new Nas album would give BT goat status. The lack of a solid solo album by BT over beats is the one knock on him.

I really don't think Thought has gotten better since Game Theory but just my opinion. The Streams of Thought stuff I listened to a few times, were cool but really don't go back to them. Not sure what it is about Nas but I continually go back to his stuff even when his albums aren't all that, except Nasir which I'll agree was a dud.

I think Nas shows more emotion, at least on wax. I think BT 'intellectual' approach to the craft doesn't necessarily lend to repeated listens like that. It's not a knock it's just a different 'texture'

There was a lot more range in Thought's vocal inflection on DYWM. He sounded so energetic and infectious on songs like DatSkat and the lovely Essaywhuman. Then on Silent Treatment, he actually sounds a little dejected. Now, everything the he spits is on an even keel, delivered like aggressive verbal daggers regardless of the content. Still great because of his talent, but it's like receiving cold information. Once you've heard it, you've heard it.
Wish I could get the inflection of DYWM with the current lyrical skill.

I think this album is REALLY good.

I mean, to me, the only negatives are how short 27 Summers is and how sort of drab Nas is on Car 85 is because it just seems like a waste of a dope beat and Uncle Charlie.

I'd give it like, 4 outta 5. Will listen again, no doubt.

I like all those too. Haven't decided what the highlights are yet, personally. I just enjoy the album. Blue Benz, Replace Me, and The Cure would be on the list tho. I'm really thinking this might be one of his strongest as far playing an album in entirety. I really wanted Spicy to be my favorite because the way it knocks. The drawback of the song is the guy on the 2nd verse sounding like a complete fuck nigga with this "if she tell me no I'm gettin tight, every time I saw you I was nice" shit. But I digress.

It's all subjective according to folks' tastes.
Be damned if I'm finna be in here arguing with people about what THEY like.

when SBQ rolled that album out, all the songs damn near had an accompanying video. I think that went really far towards helping the listener see what he was going after with the 'story arc'/sequencing of the album.

This would have been a dope approach here.

Especially considering where it would've been placed (between "'Til the War is Won" and "All Bad"), it would've dragged the middle down even further.

It discredits everything you say and believe. Theres nothing you can do. I sympathize with you, really. Your parents didn't know the pendulum would be swinging in your lifetime. They thought they had more time.

Nas’ ‘King’s Disease’ Gets Derailed by Petty Misogyny
The Queensbridge icon’s legendary storytelling chops are undercut by his increasingly bad politics on his first album in eight years

by DANNY SCHWARTZ

On his 1994 coming-of-age masterpiece Illmatic, Nas rendered the sprawling Queensbridge Houses, and the thrills and despair of young Black life in Dinkins-era New York City, with the detail and scale of Bosch’s Garden of Earthly Delights. He’s never come close to making another Illmatic, but he’s still mining the album’s rich source material 26 years later.

The high points on King’s Disease, Nas’s first full-length album since 2012, are the songs when he revisits his formative experiences in the late Eighties and early to mid Nineties. Snapshots from those teenage years still come to him easily, and his lucid storytelling unspools in quarter-verse vignettes. The opening lines of “Blue Benz” recall the iconic opening scene in Belly: “I used to be at the Tunnel, 20 deep in a huddle/Razors on us that’ll make skin bubble, Moet, we guzzle/Chris Lighty let me in a few times with nines.” On “Car 85,” the car service preferred by hustlers of Nas’s generation inspires a summertime cruise down memory lane: “That’s NY, White Castle at midnight/ Fish sandwiches, 40-ounces, and fistfights.” Hit-Boy’s production on the album, which deftly weaves hazy horns, filtered soul samples, muted drums, and lots of piano, is a particularly apt backdrop during these moments of nostalgic reverie.

Nas’ Black pride and righteous anger, which animate much of King’s Disease, resonate the most when he draws a line between his present and pre-fame past. By touching on the infamous 1994 crime bill that cast young black men as “super predators,” the emotional trauma success can’t fix (“Corner executive born in ghetto hell/ Where metal yell”), and the 2020 death of Kiing Shooter, the 27-year-old Queensbridge rapper who had been signed to his label, he retraces his bleak worldview anew post-George Floyd. The Devil’s lasso is a flat circle.

King’s Disease sometimes doubles as a Nas advice column, and the nuggets of OG wisdom he attempts to dispense vary wildly in quality. For every pearl, there is a turd. Several turds arise when Nas treats multisyllabic rhyme as its own end. “The stupidest part of Africa produced Blacks who started algebra,” he contends on the title track. On “10 Points,” the impulse to advise “street dudes” leads him into bland pastures: “get a lawyer, read your contract, and eat food.”

The biggest and most immovable turd of all is Nas’s petty misogyny. While he spends much of King’s Disease doling out namechecks to men of all stripes — billionaires, record execs, dancehall pioneers, basketball players, Beatles, his boxing coach, his boys — he spends an equal amount of time wishing women would stay in their place. He takes a cheap shot at Doja Cat, a woman he may or may not know. His indignation rises to a fever pitch on “The Definition” when he arrives on the topic of Gayle King, the TV journalist who brought up Kobe Bryant’s rape allegations on the day of his death. “Replace Me” and “All Bad,” generic reflections on failed romances, appear as calculated additions to the track list designed to show that he’s had “normal” relationships, in light of the allegations of domestic abuse his ex-wife Kelis aired against him in 2018.

Nas has vehemently denied Kelis’ allegations, as well as those made by his ex Carmen Bryan, who wrote of their relationship in 2006: “The next thing I knew I was being hit in the face with a closed fist. The impact of the blow was so fierce that I saw stars.” On King’s Disease, he doubles down on these denials and advances a bizarre sense of male victimhood. Less than a minute into the album, he goes off on cancel culture and takes aim at Kelis, whom he believes fabricated her stories of abuse out of spite. On “Til the War Is Won,” a performative tribute to Black women, he disavows “coward men that were beating on you,” then mutters, as an aside: “Never me.” Whether Nas doth protest too much is up for debate; either way, he clearly feels sorry for himself. He also apparently does not see the irony of claiming some women want to “slump” him.

At its best, King’s Disease is a slick Illmatic redux, a fresh portrait of Nas’ now-mythical hustler years that expands his Queensbridge universe with new characters and anecdotes and finds him in vintage form as a rapper and storyteller. At its worst, it is a misguided attempt to paper over abuse allegations and a stark showcase of his increasingly questionable politics when it comes to women. 26 years after Illmatic, Nas still has room to grow.
