since those are supposedly the live speeches.

but yeah.. it’s not like I need to be convinced but I still used to watch the key speakers during normal times because they had that raw energy.

This new format felt so weird when I tuned in.

i dont know why.

you had false starts and quite a bit of awkwardness that could had been removed with a second take.

would had made more sense to just record the best take you can and air them.

could had just been done on purpose to make it look like it was live but thats weird too.

This is really good. A clear statement of purpose for the future of the Democratic party.

The Honorable John Kasich
Former Governor of Ohio

Democratic National Convention
Monday, August 17, 2020

Remarks as Prepared for Delivery

America is at a crossroads. Sometimes elections represent a real choice, a choice we make as individuals and as a nation about which path we want to take when we’ve come to challenging times. America is at that crossroads today. The stakes in this election are greater than any in modern times.

Many of us have been deeply concerned about the current path we’ve been following for the past four years. It’s a path that’s led to division, dysfunction, irresponsibility, and growing vitriol between our citizens. Continuing to follow that path will have terrible consequences for America’s soul because we’re being taken down the wrong road by a president who has pitted one against the other. He’s unlike all of our best leaders before him, who worked to unite us, to
bridge our differences, and lead us to a united America.

I’m a lifelong Republican, but that attachment holds second place to my responsibility to my country. That’s why I’ve chosen to appear at this convention. In normal times, something like this would probably never happen, but these are not normal times. I’m proud of my Republican heritage. It’s the party of Lincoln, who reflected its founding
principles of unity and a higher purpose. But what I have witnessed these past four years belies those principles.

Many of us can’t imagine four more years going down this path, and that’s why I’m asking you to join with me in choosing a better way forward. I believe the best of America lies ahead, but only when we rediscover our shared belief in the United States of America, for our children’s future, which can be bright, hopeful, and inspired if we choose to make it so.

I’ve known Joe Biden for 30 years. I know his story of profound grief that has so deeply affected his character. I know Joe is a good man, a man of faith, a unifier, someone who understands the hopes and dreams of the common man and the common woman, a man who can help us to see
the humanity in each other. He knows that the path to a restored and rejuvenated America lies in respect and unity and a common purpose for everyone.

Yes, there are areas where Joe and I absolutely disagree. But that’s OK because that’s America. Because whatever our differences, we respect one another as human beings, each of us searching for justice and for purpose.

We can all see what’s going on in our country today and all the questions that are facing us, and no one person or party has all the answers. But what we do know is that we can do better than what we’ve been seeing today, for sure. And I know that Joe Biden, with his experience and his wisdom and his decency, can bring us together to help us find that better way.

I’m sure there are Republicans and Independents who couldn’t imagine crossing over to support a Democrat. They fear Joe may turn sharp left and leave them behind. I don’t believe that because I know the measure of the man. It’s reasonable, faithful, respectful, and, you know, no
one pushes Joe around.

Joe Biden is a man for our times, times that call for all of us to take off our partisan hats and put our nation first for ourselves and, of course, for our children.

When America chooses the right path and pulls together, like we’ve done so many times before, we can dream big dreams and we can see the top of the mountain as a United States of America, with a soul that is a beacon of freedom to the entire world.

For some reason I envisioned Michelle dropping bombs and the crowd going wild. Then I turned for the start of it the convention and realized.. it’s mad quiet. It’s weird af for a convention.

Same thing with the NBA games. I wanted to test out my new soundbar for the playoffs then realized most of the bass and sound is from stadium music and crowd atmosphere. The commercials for that thump tho.. lol.

There really is no reason to watch in real time since most of the speeches are prerecorded.

I'm sure they'll add people who were kicked out of stores for refusing to wear masks, actual women named Karen, and other victims.

i don't know how much of any of it is indicative of turnout tho

It was refreshing to hear a non-politician just bring it from the heart like that.

Unfortunately, the party is still horribly managed. The fact that Bloomberg (a blatant racist/sexist) and Kasich are getting more featured prime time than AOC (who is only getting 60 seconds for a pre-recorded statement) is absurd.

I get the strategy of the "Republicans for Biden" movement - but that's the same strategy that the dems have done in presidential elections for 2 decades now - and it hasn't worked well. If you want to kiss up to the Joe Liebermans of the world once again - ok - but not at the expense of energizing and exciting young voters and the Progressive base. Give AOC and the Squad featured slots and embrace/promote these young rising stars. Celebrate the primary victories of Bowman, Mondaire & Bush and embrace this new wave energy coming into the party.

They are allowing the politics of John Kasich to dictate the tenor of the Convention, which illustrates just how far to the right the "center" in this country has shifted.

But For the center right voters and moderates, health care is not the first thing that comes to mind when they think of “progressives” aka the far left

There’s a reason some of us had reservations about slogans like Defund the Police and Dem-socialism . We wanted to reach the moderates and win.

in the 2020 dem primary.

its amazing that these folks still offer up criticism/analysis after being completely wrong several times over.

the fight for this election is gonna be won in the suburbs of places like mi, tx, az, nc, etc. that was even the path to the dem house majority and state govt recaptures in 2018.

why would dems be hinging their hopes on a part of the base that could only turn out 25% of the vote in a primary and got blown out in every single swing state except tx where bloomberg cannibalized biden votes?

Unlike Clinton - who saw no need to accommodate the sizable Sanders base - Biden has done a much better job of reaching out to those voters (partially because he has no choice as Sanders has been by far the most influential voice given how popular his policy prescriptions are - so popular that the entire field adopted his platform).

But only in your mind can you be consistently wrong election after election and yet staunchly continue to defend your losing argument.

shit 3 of the people you mentioned are in ny alone.

and how does the politics of john kasich dictate the tenor of a convention where speeches from michelle obama and jill biden...and a virtual roll call showing the national diversity of the democratic party...and leading most of the discussion?

people are barely talking about kasich (outside of the usual lefty crybabies who complain about everything).

Your focus has very much been on rendering the Progressive electorate as negligible and non-essential to winning in November - while you religiously recite the need to reel in moderate voters. These Clinton/Kaine talking points failed us miserably in 2016.

>people are barely talking about kasich (outside of the usual
>lefty crybabies who complain about everything).

Not just Kasich - but Bloomberg, McCain, Colin Powell etc.. etc.. Again - as stated - I have no issue with the "Republicans for Biden" movement - reel some of them in - but to do that and then blatantly slight the Squad and the young, diverse progressive movement blooming and looking for a political home is absolute political malpractice.

And the only reason they're doing it is because they're afraid that Kasich voters will be scared of AOC's politics. Instead of promoting her and driving the narrative that the real extremists are on the Trump train, they acquiesce and cede ground to the GOP.

And it hasn't worked.

i was looking at the schedule and i can see that each night has something that makes me want to tune in.

tonight is the roll call and i kind of just want to see how they go about it.

https://www.demconvention.com/schedule-and-speakers/?_sft_event-day=august-18

i might skip out after ocasio-cortez though. i am curious on what jimmy carter has to say, will probably watch that tomorrow.

i cant miss warren tomorrow

i also want to see harris and obama. so might tune in for warren and come back at the end.

last night is pretty packed with worthwhile speakers so might just watch the whole thing live. seems weird to me for yang to be the last speaker before biden. dude really blew up his profile.

aside from the metoo/lewinsky and epstein associations...

he did a ton of damage in 2016. from giving trump a potent talking point by calling obamacare the craziest thing in the world...to meeting with loretta lynch on the tarmac (causing her to recuse from the hillary email investigation and let comey take the lead)...to his wife having to defend his policies and behaviors. hes prolly the least talked about factor that had the most impact on the election (and it was basically all negative).

currently the liabilities outweigh whatever pluses people still think he brings (is he keeping many voters in the party?).

its time to put him out to pasture.

I was 26 when his 2nd term ended and his administration was seen as a resounding success.

I'm not saying that Bill should be today's torchbearer for the Dems. No, he's definitely got too many strikes against him for that. But some of those strikes weren't there in 2000-2001. Folks that are my age and older remember just how popular he was when he left office. And older folks still have some sway (especially financially).

Democrats Drop Demand To End Fossil Fuel Subsidies From Party Platform

Joe Biden and running mate Kamala Harris each ran on axing subsidies, but the party said including that in the final draft of the platform was an "error."

The Democratic National Committee this week quietly dropped language calling for an end to fossil fuel subsidies and tax breaks from its party platform, HuffPost has learned.

On July 27, officials added an amendment to the Manager’s Mark, a ledger of party demands voted on as one omnibus package, stating: “Democrats support eliminating tax breaks and subsidies for fossil fuels, and will fight to defend and extend tax incentives for energy efficiency and clean energy.”

The amendment was approved. But the statement ― which reflects pledges presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden and his running mate, Kamala Harris, each made on the campaign trail ― disappeared from the final draft of the party platform circulated Monday.

In an emailed statement, a DNC spokesperson said the amendment was “incorrectly included in the Manager’s Mark” and taken out “after the error was discovered.”

Activists accused the DNC of retroactively removing the amendment from the final draft of the platform.

“This is ridiculous,” Collin Rees, a campaigner with the nonprofit Oil Change U.S., said by phone. “This is a commonsense position held by both Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. … The DNC should immediately include it in the platform.”

Greenpeace ranked the DNC platform a C-plus in a new grade set to be released Wednesday, giving the official party manifesto a lower rating than the B-plus proposals Biden and Harris each ran on in the presidential primary.

“This platform is a step backwards, and we deserve better,” Charlie Jiang, a campaigner at Greenpeace, said in a statement sent with the nonprofit’s new ranking.

Democrats remain split on fossil fuels even as scientists say keeping the Earth’s climate from changing beyond recognition depends on rapidly reducing the use of oil, gas and coal over the next decade. The party depicts itself as champions against global warming, drawing contrasts with Republicans who question the very nature of climate science. But party officials have long feared that a hard-line stance against the industry jeopardized both donations and votes in fossil fuel-producing states such as Pennsylvania and Texas.

The DNC last year battled with activists and Washington Gov. Jay Inslee, who ran for president on a climate-centered platform, over whether to host a debate focused on global warming. The party leadership ultimately voted against the proposal.

It’s difficult to know exactly how much the United States spends every year supporting fossil fuel production. Conservative estimates put the total for state and federal incentives at roughly $20 billion per year. An International Monetary Fund study published last year pegged the figure at $649 billion in 2015 alone. Roughly half of all U.S. oil reserves required subsidies to generate a profit, according to a study published in the journal Nature Energy in 2017, and that was before the price of crude plunged far below $50 a barrel.

The Trump administration boosted that support this year as rock-bottom oil prices and plummeting demand amid the coronavirus pandemic battered U.S. producers.

Thu Aug-20-20 09:59 PM by Stadiq

moderate?

There is literally no reason for that. No logical or political argument for that other than "wow, Nancy really is garbage"

The Dem party is trash Reeq

Look, I get it. You run Biden you might as well make a play for any frustrated Republicans that *might* be out there.

Might as well.

So I'm not up in arms over Powell or Kasich. I get it. (Though I sort of doubt that those voters are swayed by a convention...or any voters for that matter...seems like conventions are to rally the party)

I also know you can't scare granny...you can't have AOC giving socialism speeches, etc. You can't.

I also get that is all about getting Trump the fuck out. So, I'm all in on Biden and Kamala. Lets do it.

The party as a whole is fucking garbage though.

The fossil fuel thing above.

Nancy endorsing Kennedy when, at worst ,she should have stayed the fuck out of it and really, she should have been consistent and endorsed Markey

Open letters to the post office

Progressives not getting enough burn at the convention (where was Castro??)

What exactly is Biden's COVID plan? I'm fairly tuned in, so if I don't know it Jimmy Amerikkka doesn't. Someone on twitter called the convention "decency porn" lol

Still trotting out Bill Clinton in 2020 lololol

I'm not one of these bros, you know that.

But the Dem party is fucking trash. And when you start to think "maybe it will be better with the old guard gone" Joe fucking Kennedy becomes a thing (why the fuck can't he wait his turn??).

The party really can't help itself and I really don't get it. I like to think it would be better without Chuck, Nancy, Perez, etc...but seems like there's always someone equally out of touch next up to bat.

cuz now you have all of this dumb shit that comes out of it. along with the waste of money. for a safe blue seat. i hope he gets the shit beat out of him.

pelosi jumping into it is stupid af. and blatantly hypocritical. plus she risks being humiliated if kennedy loses.

i talked about the fossil fuels thing on here before. i think it was in a convo about beto. basically dems cant just kill the fossil fuel industry if they still wanna be competitive in pa, oh, tx, etc. some labor unions in those areas demand dems/dnc take the posture they take on fossil fuels in order to maintain their support. those industries still provide a lot of jobs.

we also saw this in va too when a big union out there left the black lg candidate off a flier with the rest of the dem ticket because he was against 2 gas pipelines in the state.

a lot of folks on the left claim to love unions...except when those unions oppose things like medicare for all and abandonment of fossil fuel projects.

always thought it was weird how people kept implying he would turn to dust as soon as he stepped foot in the WH.

I will admit early in the primaries before SC he looked like a soft doo doo.

Atta boy Joe.
Good speech. Drew a sharp contrast to Trump.
I think it will appeal to a lot of folks who want that old thing back. Those that don't agree with Dems or Biden, but are just worn out from the circus.

And no flubs. Will people stop talking about mental decline now?

this reminds me of the last dem primary debate. his opposition harped so much on his mental capacity that they set the bar low for him. but this was seriously an eye opening 'oh ok' type of performance. i honestly didnt know he had that in him. teleprompter or not.

even folks at fox news like bret baier and karl rove were giving biden his props.

you know he did well when the latest conspiracy is that the speech was really several edited pre-recorded takes sewn together to look cohesive.

... of other people. Like, it's incredibly uncommon that I'll have a conversation with somebody and realize that they are intoxicated or dealing with some kind of mental health issue or whatever, even when it's often incredibly obvious after the fact.

But within four seconds of Donald Trump Jr. opening his mouth, I reflexively shouted "drugs. that guy is on drugs right now."

Pretty proud of myself for being so canny about the way of the world, but then I hit twitter and found that pretty much everybody realized it within two seconds and were already knee-deep in a discussion of the type and volume of drugs he had ingested.

In a few battleground states at this point.

Convention ratings don’t excite me. Got a bad feeling
he gets a big bump. From what I’ve read, they are
working hard to make women feel ok about voting
Trump.

Van Jones getting his Van Jones on.

Media normalizing this shit show.

Dems sticking to norms.

And he is actually closer in the states that matter?

Shiiiiit.

I get that there were more undecideds last time, but
shit is still scary.

Also saw something that said fewer Republicans
are for Biden than Hill or Obama at this point.

I don’t know man. Starting to think Dems and Dem
supporters are falling for the echo chamber.

the constant use of "Biden and the radical left" always sounds goofy.

142. "can I ask why you're hung up on ratings?"
In response to Reply # 141

No snark, but it seems like some Dem echo chamber high fiving.

It reminds me of "she won the pop vote!" moral victory shit.

I get ratings are important to HIM, but we shouldn't give a shit.

I'm worried folks are getting too comfortable and, again, doubting Trump and how shitty this country is.

In response to Reply # 142

and also a potential metric for enthusiasm/engagement.

its not the end all be all but the fact that an *incumbent* president is pulling in lower ratings than both of the candidates on the opposing ticket is notable (along with other metrics where trump performs poorly).

the rnc as a whole did worse than the dnc and thats even with trump prolly getting some boost the last night with no sports to compete with (strikes).

Is putting out better, more succinct attacks than the
Dems right now. Ended up on his Twitter feed due to
a retweet...was surprised cuz I always thought dude
was GOP for some reason.

Then I got bummed cuz he’s essentially brainstorming
better ads than I’ve seen from the Dems...for
example listing all the radical things trump has done,
etc.

Where the Fuck is Bloomberg?

Here's the OKP parts:
@trumpswarroom tweets this out: (Story https://deadline.com/2020/08/donald-trump-twitter-joe-biden-1203027752/)

The account Trump War Room sent out a three-second clip in which Biden says, “You won’t be safe in Joe Biden’s America!” But Biden was actually saying the opposite.

Biden said in his Pittsburgh speech, “And since they have no agenda or vision for a second term Trump and Pence are running on this: ‘You won’t be safe in Joe Biden’s America.’ And what’s their proof? The violence you’re seeing in Donald Trump’s America.”

Trump’s campaign responded shortly afterward: “To all the triggered journalists who can’t take a joke about their candidate, it’s not our fault Joe Biden was dumb enough to say this on camera.”

Posting quotes wildly and dishonestly and then lying about the CLEAR MEANING and CONTEXT isn't clever - it's troll shit.

Troll shit is not clever. Unfortunately most people in this country ALSO aren't clever.

Next up: Biden will say "Don't. Kill. People." and Trump's people will posts a video of Biden saying "Kill. People."

And then people will think it's CLEVER.
