I wanted to rewatch that segment anyway cause I missed what Baldwin was saying.

even though highlighting white racist horrors along with Lovecraft's monsters is the whole point, every time a cop was on screen I just got very tired. Like, "do I actually want to watch this?" tired.

But if we really doing this....
By "carry the weight", do you mean "always share the same opinions" ?

If so, why use her as a deflection in reply 33?

If we NOT doing this...
I was just highlighting how episode 3 showcased her acting skill. Ain't really gotta be a back n forth. Kinda understand tho if you're a little prickly after the heat you got fpr saying that and subsequently pointing the finger at your wife tho. It's all good. I wasn't attacking you.

For trivial shit...we generally agree...and if we don't I'm usually the one that more easily swayed....

>If so, why use her as a deflection in reply 33?
That was mainly because of the gender bias style leap that was made...that because I was a male, I was using the terminology of "girl".... so not really deflection...

>If we NOT doing this...
>I was just highlighting how episode 3 showcased her acting
>skill. Ain't really gotta be a back n forth. Kinda understand
>tho if you're a little prickly after the heat you got fpr
>saying that and subsequently pointing the finger at your wife
>tho. It's all good. I wasn't attacking you.

seen.
it's all good...
but yeah, we were both allayed of our concerns for her acting chops after watching Ep.1. We're solid fans of both her AND the show now. I legit think that the last thing we saw her act in was Eve's Bayou lol......hence the "girl" remark the wife made and the illegitimate expectation that she hadn't developed and improved as an actress over all these years lol...

One thing I didn't like was the scene with the live performance with Letitia showing up and jumping on stage. I deadass thought I was watching One Tree Hill or something at that point.

The intro was bananas but tied together the Lovecraft's Sci-Fi and racism into the world the story takes place in.

I heard and expected more weight given to the women in the story, given Misha Green, so that is a nice divergence from the book.

There's only one, young grasshoppers.
As you can see, I'm totally down to discuss the terrible depictions of Black men and women in cinema, but damn son... were you jealous or something when I did it? Did you start paying attention and realize I was onto something? Why were you at MY neck for critiquing our cinematic depictions?

Beyond all that, a word of unsolicited advice... this might go over better if you make the critique about the specific person you're dealing with rather than saying "black women" as a whole, because a black males were behind "dear white people" and "empire." This is less about who's producing, writing and directing than who's giving the green light to these specific depictions.

Which, IMO, season 3 was one of the worst broadcast of television...EVAH!!!

maybe that's why I'm meh...expecting the big letdown

But something just isn't pulling me in here

...the green book reference which has already been covered...

...terrifying monsters that have a convenient weakness...

...the savior with impeccable timing...

Or maybe because reality right now is way more terrifying

I guess it may be an issue of timing for this series

I'll probably binge when the season is over

...but I'm not that interested in this series for some reason...

?

the only thing i gleaned off of the first watch was it was an interesting interpretation of gaslighting.

we don't know any more or any less that what the characters in the show know..i like that as a storytelling device...they are confused as fuck and so are we lol

We get to figure things out right alongside them..it puts you in the story, in a way.

understandably, everyone isn't into that

When things happen and I'm wondering what it is or if it'll be explained later. The only time is sucks is when there is no eventual explanation. Might be easier for some to digest when it's part of a movie or the entire season hits the platform at once and they don't have to wait for weeks to find out. I'm getting a little infected by the binge era tho, because I do find myself wishing I could just hit "next episode" when it goes off, but that's just because I'm so into it and wanna know what happens next.

But yes, "they are confused as fuck and so are we" makes for fun watching imo.

And I totally get being creative and liberal with the story and all that shit...just didn't think this episode was very good. The pacing was off, there were some portions of the book that were so well written and really didn't get explained well via this episode. I'm going to keep watching but...it was bad lol.

Again, you're simply comparing it to the book, and therefore your own expectations.

I have no expectations...i get to watch the show on its own merits, as a piece of writing and storytelling that's meant to be watched and not read.

so "bad" in relation to the book, and "bad" as a piece of television storytelling are two different things.

anyway, i do hope you can find a way to enjoy the show because it sounds like the book is good...i was thinking of reading it after, but maybe that's not a good idea lol

but an excellent and imaginative (sci-fi) writer.

The whole twist to LC is that these old stories have been re-written w/Black people as the protagonists or something like that to put a twist on it.

It's a lot to digest, but sometimes it takes that to keep me interested. Gonna be really interesting to see where things go after an episode packed with so much. Very much looking forward to the next episode. I am VERY entertained.
Seeing Black folks as protagonists in sci-fi hasn't been done enough, and I'm glad we're seeing it more lately. As is shown here and in Get Out, etc, that can add so many layers that haven't been explored yet.. and have often been ignored, frankly.
I have some interesting observations about this, but I'll wait until the end of the season to discuss.

Seeing us as portages in sci-fi is Peele's doing. He grew up like most of us with movies of the horror and sci-fi genre even if we weren't always in it or just castoffs.

These are the days of us being in horror etc and what happens when we hear a voice say "get out" as the comedians used to say..we re not simply getting in the car and driving off

Same. I want to see shit I've never seen before and this is that...so extremely creative. I love the use of Whitey on the Moon during THAT scene.. hears James Baldwin in ep. 1 and Gil Scott in ep. 2...fucking brilliant...

They gave us a whole movie, beginning, middle, end, with character development in ONE EPISODE. We're introduced to the house and all its characters within, and by the end of the episode, all of them and the house are gone. Amazing

and the twist of Uncle George reading the entire book he found and introducing the loophole in their shit was fucking beautiful..

I looks like every episode is a self contained story with a connecting subplot, versus a 10 or so episode story arc.

I never read HP Lovecraft, so can someone tell me, are these actually taken from his stories, or is it just done in his style?

It's a shame because the subtle historical nods seem much more interesting than anything else going on with the story right now.

Of course I'm wondering if Atticus is gonna try to find Winthrop's pages and decode the language of Adam. Story line is fun and intriguing to me.The scene where they where she was chanting with the ghosts over Shirley Ceasar was ... oddly powerful. I love so much of the stuff they're doing here with the making sci-fi of our history and culture. Just such a joy to watch and appreciate US. During this episode, I found myself wondering if the show will continue on the strength of our love alone, because I can see white people hating that Black people are being shown as protagonsists and themselves as villains (exact opposte of what they tend to wanna see). I also came away wondering how any Black person into sci-fi could possibly NOT like this show. Then I come here lol. I remember having Game of Thrones recommended to me b/c my homie wanted to talk about it. It took me like 3 or 4 SEASONS before that shit was interesting to me. That first season was slow and boring af. This is us being done right in sci-fi so far. Brilliant stuff so far... not just some random BS thrown together but a very nicely developing storyline with intelligent Black people figuring their way through things. It was nice to see Letitia being the one figuring things out this episode. That's George, Atticus, and now Letitia who have all shown intelligence and not just been Black clutzes on screen on having to be saved by white people. You don't see this a lot when Black people share the screen with white people. I like that Atticus is always trying to protect Letitia. (uncle George stopped him when he was about to interfere with her family business, the policeman stopped him when he wanted to run to the car from the cabin, he offered to sleep in the basement and stand watch for her). Only minor knock there is a lot of his knowledge comes from white folk's military. Would've liked it if he was just a smart civilian who just read up. Also thought is was silly of his to not only try to shoot a damn sorcerer, but a white woman, BUT it did facilitate her line about killing white women, which is a line I can appreciate because with all the magic she has, she knows being a white woman is one of her most powerful tools. If that ain't some plain ol' reality for you.

Anyway, this episode was great imo. As the story builds, I'm just hoping this stays this good and stays on for many seasons. It's gonna have to us who support tho.

In response to Reply # 124

- seeing the housewarming party and the Black folks just enjoying and loving up on each other while the white folks was seething across the street was like fuck yes!

- my 22 year old son is watching with me (which is even more enjoyable as i explain historic references to him) and i commented how satisfying it was to see the "cross burning on the lawn" scene not turn out like it always does...with us being scared and falling back or leaving or moving...instead, BUSTING FUCKING WINDOWS SON...then Hyp pulls up with the trunk open, gets the gats and bats and leaves..that shit was so badass and just so fucking satisfying (even tho its fantasy)

-the love scene w/the twist that she was a virgin...like we knew they would crush eventually but the awkwardness of how and why...and the way he softened when she told him...i'm enjoying their journey

- seeing Black spirituality centered like that with the priestess...like wow. that was incredibly powerful imagery...we never get to see that

- i commented to my son that the "monsters" and the white people always show up at the same time LOL...i love that the show is creating this obvious parallel

Exactly. This is a Black woman in the 50's who's bought a 5(?) bedroom home on her own. She's not just up and leaving it.

Plus like I said above, Black people have documented living in haunted in THIS millennium. Most "Black folks wouldn't" and "Black folks don't" stuff is nothing more than jokes at this point. Reality says different.

Considerably better than episode #2, which was just a fairly bad episode of TV.

But this one worked well. Certainly the atmosphere and the story. CGI was a bit cheesy, but it didn't take me out of it or anything.

despite the fact that Letitia had just said the dead body floating in the water looked like one of her neighbors who disappeared, so finding the elevator kinda made sense to them after that. I thought their level of surprise fit the context.
And aside from the shocked look on Letitia's face when the elevator appeared, she said Epstein (previous owner of the house) must have been chasing Titus' pages too.

The episode builds nicely. By the end, there's so much to keep you anticipating the next part of the story.

First off, the little boy at the library who wanted them to be quiet was reading "Journey To The Center of the Earth" and when they went into the ground at the museum, Atticus said "This is some Journey To The Center of The Earth shit." I've never read that book or seen the movie, but I know that in the book, the the gang have to get out of the volcano within 48 hrs due to the temperature rising. Here, they have 3 hrs because the tide is rising. There could have been more references to it all throughout the episode for all I know.

The idea of the Orrery is interesting. Especially since the light from the moon opened the vault. That's reminiscent of how the moon always shine on the pyraminds a certain way, as they're built to exactly correspond to certain celestial bodies. Gonna be interesting to see what Hippolyta does with that. Also gonna be interesting to see where she's going and what she runs into on the way. Looks like she's going to become a major player in the story given what she's got going on AND her past and the naming of the constellation.

I love how they portray Atticus and Letitia's relationship. They "fight like a married couple" as the old saying goes, but they love the hell out of each other. There's a good balance of familiarity arguing and expressions of love between them.

I also like the fact that the priestess' spell even worked on Christina. Shout out to negro spirituality.

Not sure what Montrose's deal is. This nigga done burned the book and killed Two Spirit. Seems like he's either working for the Braithwaites, spelled by them, an incarnation of another spirit, or just out for himself. Hard to believe he's really just trying to protect him family like he claimed. Could be tho... who knows. Can't wait to find out.

Speaking of Two Spirit, the visual of her coming to life from a skeleton was cool af. Also, maybe she couldn't trust Atticus' spirit because Montrose was standing beside him.

Ruby's story is just plain ol' real shit with her not applying and then going in the store to see the first Black woman working there. Sometimes you just gotta try. I'm not sure if Samuel licking her blood has any significance, but I'd guess it does. Should've known they'd somehow throw in a white man sleeping with a Black woman tho. Almost seems mandatory for shows to get on TV now. The musical backdrops suggests he spelled her, but still, they gotta find a way to get it in there.

That should say "I know in the movie". Could be the book too idk. I just read a brief summary of the movie after this episode because of the references.

She drives up to the house, disappears, then he immediately comes out to beat up the dudes (have we ever seen them in a scene together?)

She knows who Leti's sister is...and that she couldn't get close to her any other way than by being a man that seduces her

so many times we are reminded that she can't be in the "club" because she's a woman...doesnt it make sense that she'd have a male form so she could access certain things?

And yes, the black spirituality on display warms my heart so much

They never appear in the same scene. The one you mention where the cops are following her, they literally show her walk around the corner and then he appears out of nowhere from around the same corner right after she disappears. Good catch.

pretty much!

I'm enjoying the little off beat references and nods to peripheral characters that appear in the story like Diana's friend Bobo (Emmitt Till). And like James Baldwin as a tenant in Leti's house.

First it opens with his lover saying, what was it? "was it the whites or the niggers?"

like...uh, what?

Then when they actually started getting hot and heavy, I died laughing at amount of spit he managed to produce off the rip

It wasn't just *spitoo* it was...a lot of spit, like a lot of lot of spit.

and then...the weird biting Montrose was doing.

I was thinking I might not like Ruby's story about turning white, but I liked the way they put it together. I laughed especially hard when she told ol girl "white folks got some shiiiiit" as the white woman. Her explaining how she felt as a white woman was also well-done. I was glad that she ultimately decided she was unhappy being white as well. Her stabbing dude with the heel was hilarious.

So they confirmed that Montrose is gay or at least not completely straight. I was just waiting for them to tell me why he killed Two-Spirit. That's all I wanna know from him right now. Maybe all they showed here is leading up to that in some way.

I liked the effects and how it looked when they turned into different appearances. Well-done.

Damali called it with Christina. Probably right about the time travel too.

Some unanswered questions in this one. The symbol on the rock and the pages and what he'd decoded when he came up with D-I-E. Dunno if I need to watch again or just wait and see. Watched this one with company so I wasn't attentive as usual.

while in white-body, though the choice to have her character act that way rang true.

i, personally, imagine that it would be more fun to be shit to the white subordinates if I'm now the assistant manager. but of course "Hillary" is still going to be obsessed with comparing and competing and feeling negatively towards the Black woman that beat her out.

on another note, i'm not a really into body horror, but i was okay with this episode. i was really scared for ruby anytime she she had a metamorphosis outside of the mansion though. what would happen if she was discovered? will she ever use Hillary again?

loved the inclusion over Ntozake Shange's "For Colored Girls" in this ep as well.

of course cuz that's the only world of interaction she knows...it likely felt foreign to talk to her white female subordinates at all, let alone actually be tough on them...she barely managed to tell them to get back to work LOL

This is why the show is great. These nuances fi thats what you call them..or these emotions/actions that are actually the real heart of that series..the spooky shit is just the crust.

The fact that it is presenting such a real take on the black experience is great.

But fuck Lovecraft. His name should be removed the way we remove confederate statues. I gave it some time to deal with this elephant in the room but it won't or if it does I do not approve of the approach. People are using this to say shit like you should check out Lovecraft's stories. Fuck Lovecraft's stories. Fuck Lovecraft with the heel in the ass like last nights ep. This man needs to be disgraced.

Fine production under any other name, but I can't let this one go. It's actually something I've been vexed at for years because Lovecraft is in the public domain and white people love using that shit. In fact isn't this based on a book by one.

Sorry, just needed to put this out there.

But even that wouldn't have been enough. It is way too understated how his racism is at the core of what's called lovecraftian horror. That dehumanizing of people to monsters is based explicitly on that racism. The whole genre is tainted by his world view and this just isn't doing anything to address that.

The scene I'm talking about was one in the first ep where tic picks up one of his books and says that fucking racist or something.

Not enough.

1) it is presenting racism in America and wrapping Lovecraftian horror around it. That is all that one can say it's doing from a surface look. You can go deeper than that and arrive at other things, but on the surface it's just that.

2) Most people only see things at a surface level. Kudos to okp for being woke, but most people surface.

3) A tounge in cheek mocking of Lovecraft's racism is not dealing with the effects of that racism. Neither is a big neon sign. And my point is that the effects of his racism in particular are the deep seeded shit that has been pervasive in the white consciousness for over a hundred years and literally a part of why we're still dealing with this shit today.

4) If a show cannot deal with that head on then perhaps it's not the show we need on this topic.

Again I think the show on its own is fine, but as a commentary on Lovecraft it's nowhere near enough.

I'd apologize for the all caps but if you're just going to ignore everything I type. Again perfectly fine take on racism in America, a refreshing portrayal of our people at that time, tainted by its association with Lovecraft and not doing ENOUGH to address the issues I'm raising.

If you disagree with that please provide me with the examples that show so. Because just saying it's fine isn't changing my opinion. Challenge my view, I'd welcome it.

WTF?? You think the show is presenting American systemic racism, Im saying the stories and racism in it represents Lovecrafts racism. You think mentioning Lovecrafts racism in the first episode is all there is to state how he was a racist. I say that was the jump off in showing his racist views in the following eps as well as the horror factors from him in the eps. One WOULD think LC is a telling of how America has a racist past (duh..and too easy) but I think that initial announcing he was a racist is intertwined in the stories, deeper than what's presented at face value.

YOU DONT AGREE WITH THAT! IM NOT LEGS ETC WHOS GONNA GO BACK AND FORTH WITH BS CLOGGING UP A THREAD.

I've been on a history kick and learning about the brutal bombing of Korea and Japan (in WWll)

bombing in this case specifically meaning incendiary bombing - aka napalm.

that stuff is no joke. it will bring an enemy to their knees.

essentially, the US does not fucking play. during the bombing of Tokyo during operation meetinghouse, the US in a single night killed 80-100,00 people and destroyed a 16 by 16 mile section of the city. For reference, Manhattan is 13 miles long and 2.5 miles wide.

80,000 people - gone in a single night and it's not instant death, its a fucked up, FUCKED UP way to die.

ugh.

That was one city in Japan. The US saw the effects of that, looked at Korea and said "aight, bet"

So while watching last night I was thinking...this aint a normal war with guns and bombs, they were really seriously trying to dominate.

My perception of America at war has always been the middle east and urban warfare. Use of weapons of mass destruction is pretty much damn near seemingly impossible to a person like myself.

along with the history lessons abound...

it was definitely shocking seeing Tic in this light..so callously taking a life to the point where he didn't even recognize the woman right beside her...

but her 'monster' speech was so real...all humans have the same capacity to do monstrous things...how could she, who took 99 lives, judge him for the one she saw him take? who is the worse monster?

also, people online are acting like Tic lied when he told Leti that he wasn't sure what he had w/Ji...i mean he was a virgin and he was serving at war and she turned out to be a whole demon..its fair to say he was a bit confused about it all lol

also, i loved the scene with the Korean American soldier acknowledging the racism he and Tic face at home, and also him in Korea...I had just watched Da Five Bloods last week and it reminded me of that

It was also entertaining, but I'm glad the message at the end of episode 5 makes sense now. We also know fully who this Korean woman was who's appeared before. I'm usually not a fan of flashback episodes to explain what's been omitted, but this show does a great job with storytelling imo. With so much going on and the way the story's being told, this episode had me locked in. I was wondering if Atticus was so special that her tails wouldn't be able to kill him and would just transfer to power to him... but it turns out she just didn't wanna kill him. At the same time tho, I'm still kinda wondering if that did transfer some power to him. I thought him being a virgin was kind of a nice inclusion. I like that he gets portrayed as both strong and vulnerable, intelligent... even innocent at times. Black males don't often get this kind of range in our depictions.

those women. Yes, of course he was in a war. But until this ep, I didn't think too hard about what specifically he would have been doing. Often the way war stuff is depicted, it's just a bunch shooting at nameless, faceless enemies. Not shooting a girl in her forehead without hesitation or ripping another's teeth out. I'm not saying it was a bad choice to complicate our "hero" in this way, but it did affect how I feel about him.

I enjoyed being introduced to Ji-Ah/Fumiho's character and was far more interested in the arc of the relationship between her and her mother than I was in the Tic romance. The prude in me was a bit overwhelmed there.

The tentacles coming out the eyes were a lot.

the whole time they've been building up what happened "over there".

so i figured when her tails would come out, that he'd kill her in self-defense. and the phone calls were him having a guilt delusion about what he did over there

Character growth and moving the overall arc along. I could see this being another "one & done" like Watchmen because I don't want any of these plot points dragged into another season just because they ran out of runway.

-You gotta stop life and talk for hours about how you and someone had the same fucking dream, bro.

-I hope the baby/pregnancy is kept on the low so it doesn't become some kind of prophetic sacrifice.

-I hate they're not in a time period where Tic and Montrose can work out their shit and accept each other, but they have a lifetime's worth of ruining that before the f-bomb dropped.

-People with a sudden helpful spirit bother me, IRL and in media. I don't know if Ruby has a history of trying to babysit neighborhood kids.

every speech, every interaction...the naming of self, the choosing of life, the power, the freedom, the warrior, the acknowledgement of how we shrink ourselves....

All the way down to the lady on the bike...that was Bessie Stringfield...the first Black woman to drive across America solo on a motorcyle...AND she was a WW2 vet

its a cliche at this point, but this show really truly is everything.

"I AM' being a Black woman with a huge afro was just plain fantastic.
My favorite thing about the episode.

Hippolyta's entire journey of self-discovery was enjoyable from realizing she was mad at herself for allowing white folks to make her feel small to George painfully admitting that he allowed her to shrink for his sake. I'm interested in what's gonna come of her when she returns to the show's time period now. I never watch previews for the next week, so it'll be fun to find out.
I was confused when they played Lady Marmalade until I realized they were kinda playing that as the score and not the piece they were performing to. LM came about 20 or 30 yrs after that period. What's interesting the B-side was "Space Children" which very much fits Hippolyta's journey this episode.

In a weird way, I'm kinda glad there's the scene where Tic and Leti see Montrose's boyfriend leaving. It was just real... especially for the time period. Then we have Tic realizing Montrose beating him as a child was about Montrose's own insecurity and self unacceptance. And he's rightfully pissed off. Poor Leti just doesn't know WHAT to say, so she tries to introduce some good news.

Things could get really messy here if Ruby tells Christina about the orrery, since she was peeking in while Leti was on the phone.

Other than that, I hope Tic finds the book, and Ruby was looking fine AF when Hippolyta dropped Diana off lol.

Had me shook for real. Those girls gave me chills. They were played so wonderfully. I sat up and was glued to the t.v. I was scared, without any jump scene sequences, every time they were on screen.
Of course, the very beginning of this episode had me super emotional dealing with the death of 'Bobo'.
One of my favorite episodes.

Love, love, love this show. It gets everything right for me, EXCEPT the sound tracking. I absolutely LOATHE period pieces that play contemporary music. Them playing Banarama's "Cruel Summer" at the beginning of the episode and connected to the scene of the young boy's death was BLASPHEMY.

the writing was off. each episode so far has connected points-to-points, episode to episode. The first 30 minutes my wife and I kept having to pause it to say "so wait a second...."

-the Emmet Till story felt a bit tacked on. Watchmen used Tulsa as a central idea that tied into everything. The Emmet angle...just like, out of nowhere. When the kid was alive and hanging out with Diane...did he even have lines? No build up, no connection to the character, no clues, no points to watch, just...AIGHT SO, EMMET TILL RIGHT?

-The scene with the cops and Diana felt a bit heavy handed when she said "I can't breathe", like, show, don't tell. We're already in a context of racism, white supremacy and police brutality, adding that is like saying "get it?" after a punchline. We already have the context.

-Tick and Letti just leaving Ji-Ah's ass in the dining room. Like, where the fuck is Ji-Ah? She just drops some earth shattering evidence on everything and instead of taking a step back to work it all out....

-Tick and Letti running through the house arguing, and then out of the blue Tick is like "IMMA BUST SOME SPELLS ON THESE HOS"

-No really, is Ji-Ah still at the dinning room table like "...these people ain't shit for leaving my nine tail ass right here with no water on this hot ass day"

-Tick just straight up saying "fuck that magic woman in particular" when it came to Ji-Ah. No "hey, HOW THE FUCK DID YOU FIGURE OUT WHERE THE FUCK WE ARE, WHAT THE FUCK SHOULD WE BE DOING, YOU TELL LETTI ABOUT ME BEING A WAR CRIMINAL?!"

-Tick and Montrose suddenly cool with each other and sitting on the curb drinking as if Tick didn't just have his whole world rocked

-Hold up, Ji-Ah if she saw it all in Ticks life, INCLUDING all the wizard shit, wouldn't she go "aight, I got 9 tails and I suck the souls out of men...just what the fuck even all is this shit?"

-The wizard cop having his whole ass eaten by the beast like...you ain't got magic to protect ya neck dude?

That make the Emmet Till B-story seemed more forced, but I'll excuse it.

Given that it's set in Chicago, characters seem to get around the country Games of Thrones style...long journeys, when it's convenient to the plot, or instantaneous.

Who died while visiting down South. The character was an easter egg in an earlier episode involving the Ouija board.

The board replied "no". Either that was the first or second episode.

I like the show, but someone on Twitter said alot of it feels like a book report. It reminds me of She's Gotta Have It (especially the 2nd season) where it's clear that the writers have a long list of Black History trivia and fun facts they want to write into the show. There's alot of Presentism in the show as well. I was legit expecting Tic to say "hands up, don't shoot" in the scene near the end.

My biggest problem here was that they opened the episode with it, and I think that's what made it feel SO out-of-nowhere. You hanging on for a week, wondering what happens with the portal and all, and then.... EMMETT TILL! It was just jarring, but I didn't mind its inclusion at all.

I gotta disagree here. People actually say they can't breathe when they can't breathe. Plus with this being the 50s, I like the statement that this is just American history.

A lot of this seems to be asking to show to focus on somewhat unnecessary parts of the story instead of feeding you the meat of the story (which is understandable to some degree, but maybe also try to understand that they're breaking ground here and may not want to slow things down to much)... especially this.

>-Tick and Montrose suddenly cool with each other and sitting
>on the curb drinking as if Tick didn't just have his whole
>world rocked

This didn't bother me. I suppose they could've shown them working all that out, but I appreciate them leaving that assumed for the sake of moving the story along and keeping it exciting. Families go through shit and move on. At least that's been my experience. I don't necessarily need to be bored with the details of how they made peace here. Knowing that they did is enough for me.

>-Hold up, Ji-Ah if she saw it all in Ticks life, INCLUDING all

i'm done with this post

it adds no value to watching the show...everybody jockeying to show how knowledgeable on film/tv writing and directing they are and how astutely discerning they are WHILE watching it every week...smh

Mischa is doing the shit HER WAY and i'm here for it AND enjoying it...everything don't have to be whatever y'all consider to be perfect. I'm not watching the show to pick it apart. i watch TV to fucking enjoy it and support BLACK CREATORS who couldn't even get a fucking LIGHT GREEN light on ANYTHING centering Black people less than a decade ago

yes, i'm annoyed. and yes, i'm logging off. and no I don't give a fuck what the rest of y'all reading think of what I just typed.

i said what the fuck i said, like i ALWAYS do.

thinking about whats between the cracks is where the insights are found.

thinking about why I'm thinking about a certain aspect or concept from the show is what makes me appreciate the art.

Another fun episode to watch.

One thing that particularly stood out to me was Ruby telling Christina she didn't wanna be a Black woman fucking a white man on today of all days... but then Christina gives her the gut punch and tells her that she actually just doesn't wanna face the fact that, even on this day, she just wanted what she wanted. HEAVY. That's a reality that so many Black folks don't want to admit. Niggas keep talking about why we can't mobilize as a collective. But I digress...

On another note, Misha Green has an interesting depiction of white male vs Black female sex. Think back to Underground. When Ernestine got sold into slavery and was with a Black husband, he was abusive and the scenes were dirty and cold. When she was raped by the slave master, the scenes were so super romantic with lush music playing. On Lovecraft Country, it's funny because I'm watching this with an Indian friend of mine, and she said "Why does he always slam her around?" when Tic and Leti had sex the most recent time. But I noticed that whenever Ruby fucks Christina as the white man, it's super romantic with lush music playing in the background... just like when Ernestine was raped by the white man on Underground. I mean... she COULD be saying it seems so nice, but it's always attached to some bullshit, but I can't help noticing how much effort goes into making those scenes look romantic.

But anyway, looking forward to seeing what's going on with Diana, because wtf was happening to her arm when Montrose grabbed her? Were the spirits killing her? Those girls did the damn thing with those characters btw.

I'm wondering if Ruby is gonna say something about seeing Leti sit up while the police were shooting in the house and all the bullets bounced off her aura.

I'm just super interested in what Monstrose's game is here.

I usually don't even like time travel as a storytelling device, but this was dope, especially how Tic was the mysterious stranger in the original story. Only thing I find kinda off about that is Montrose not remembering his face. He did say he kinda blocked this part out of memory, but still. Seems like George would've remembered too.

With Christina saying every step of this has been meticulously planned out, I'm thinking she knew they'd go back and get the Book of Names and that it's all part of her plan. Gonna be interesting to see if they outsmart her or if something unexpected will intervene. Maybe Ruby will be important in that regard, because Christina doesn't view her as a threat.

I'm starting to really love these sound clips they use near the end of the episodes. It's unique and gives the show its own little signature. And I know I've said it once, but I'm also just enjoying watching a show where our shit isn't some side issue, but the main issue and the emotions of our people is exactly what make the story matter... in a sci-fi show.

there's so many layers to it i was convinced it was gonna be a mess early on, but they are knocking it out the park for me.
The acting, the broader issues they address, the cinematic odes and use of speeches, poems and other historical material.
It all slowly comes together as an amazing symphony
(speaking of which, they created an opera for this weeks episode).

seriously can't wait to see the final next week.

I'm glad she addressed it because from where I stand, it was looking like an instance of poor writing. Introduce this character, show us they're important/have something to offer our protagonists, kill them, never mention it again... that's weak.

and in no way am I shitting on the show, or Misha's accomplishment. She is doing the damn thing. The writers are doing it to death.

that said...they miss the mark on some things and really hit the bullseye in other things the things they hit...no one else is doing what they do. The things that they miss, eh, small stuff in the big picture, they havent introduced any big WTF moments in the writing yet.

1. is it just me or is the racism shit more scary than the actual monsters? like i be tensed up when the cops are around them on screen b/c i know it's about to be some fuckery.

2. regarding lovecraft's racism. i hadn't thought about it much. but in light of point #1, and feeling sure that's intentional, isn't the name of the show (and book?) making the larger, overarching point that lovecraft is scary to Black people for reasons other than he is for white people? so lovecraft country is akin to saying klan country. except it's a klan country that's ran by crazy ass horror / occultist mfers.

3. ... which is also interesting b/c so many of the racists in this country dabble with or fully fuck with the concept of secret societies, etc. and we know that shit is interwoven with the cops. so if all these mason and moose lodge ni&&as is on some true wizard shit the prospects are even more horrific than surface level understanding of amerikka.

4. these some really damaged and fucked up characters. tulsa ep (and montrose backstory) is really a window on how we get so fucked up.

peace & blessings,

x.

Visiting their ancestors in their secret place was pretty cool. Hearing Hanna finally speak was exciting. Guess they didn't wanna heal Dee's arm just to give her a cool robotic replacement. Anybody catch what the spirits did to it? Or why Tic ate Titus' flesh? Not really interested in going back to watch.

I thought it was pretty corny when Leti said she took magic from all white people. Probably the corniest thing said on the entire season. Titus popping up right where Christina was to tell her them niggers had the book was... also rather corny.

Overall, I just felt like this episode didn't say much. So much was covered in so many of the episodes, but it all turned out to be a huge buildup to a pretty flat ending imo. Not even much here to speak of. Pretty simple and straightforward.

With that out the way, I can't help addressing how this went with the same ol' trope we often see in white cinema featuring Black people AKA the strong Black male figure is the sacrifice. At least he wasn't sacrificing himself to save white people, but still. Decent, straight Black men can't even survive in a Black show lol. I was hoping they weren't pulling the ol' "use 'em to create interest then discard them" tactic ala BLM, but alas. Even the Asian woman lives lol. So in the end it's all women who survived... and Montrose, while both George AND Tic died.

Speaking of Montrose, I wanted to wait until the season was over to talk about episode 5 where they reveal he's gay and he's hanging out with his drag friends and then goes to the club. That had to be THEE most simultaneously useless and time-consuming scene in the whole season. I didn't wanna say anything until the end, because I wanted to see if that would be important to the overall plot in some way. Turns out, they just wanted to make a huge show of his sexuality. As if they couldn't have a gay character without going HAM about it. No other time did something so unimportant to the overall storyline consume so much of an episode. Absolutely nothing wrong with him being gay. Him talking about how he did Thomas in episode 9 was actually a touching scene. Tic finding out was some real shit. Those are real scenes that make you think about what gay is enduring. I guess episode 5 just showed us how important Black male homosexuality is to the creators? Idk man. Just super odd to me given it meant nothing in the long run, except that it signaled creator favoritism as he survied while both the intelligent, straight Black men died. We have two Black-led sci-fi shows now. Lovecraft Country and Raising Dion, and that happens in both of them.

and their stories are glossed over and never a "useless and time-consuming scenei" given to such characters, meanwhile straight characters are written as full fledged characters with a "useless and time-consuming scenes " of story written that is not conducive to a story but everyone is typically ok with that.

character.

What you're saying isn't about him surviving but about the way his character is written. And his character is actually written very well. I appreciated everything about his character except the uselessness of much of episode 5, only because other scenes outside of that tied into the storyline in some way. I think his drag friends should've been useful to the storyline just as Tic's Asian friend became useful. And see, that's how they simultaneously disservice Montrose and play straight Black men. It's like having a gay friend in your crew, but you always refer to them as the gay friend, introduce them that way, or make a big deal out of the fact that you have a gay friend in your crew because you think it makes you progressive... instead of just treating them like you treat all your other friends. It shows that you actually have issues around homosexuality more than anything. Likewise, they couldn't just treat Montrose like a normal character. That's a disservice imo.

Shit reminds me of my brother's wife and white in-laws who can't act normal around my biracial nieces and always gotta go overboard trying to compensate. Just treat them like you treat the white children.

The article on Misha Green's apology claims he did it to prevent her from saying more about the Book of Names. But Misha says she just wanted to show that "oppressed folks can be oppressors" and that was probably the weakest, least nuanced and least thoughtful way possible to depict that imo. I guess it's good she had decent source material for the show if that's the kind of stuff she's coming up with on her own.

There just should've been a deeper reason for that twist. Turned out being something that was just tossed in solely as a shocking moment.

in with that bullshit.
You still have yet to explain why you came for me when I critiqued white men doing the same thing in their shows but you got all the smoke for Black women.
Since you stand by that decision, your internalized racism and hypocrisy ain't some shit I wanna be associated with. If you tryna walk back how you came at me in the GoT post over your white massa, maybe then we can start to see eye-to-eye.

My issue here also isn't that the Black men were "bashed" so much as the intelligent straight ones introduced as leads didn't survive... even the one used in the visual advertisement of the show. While they were alive, they were great characters.

In a nutshell, yeah 23 is pretty far off. Not only on its face, but because of the maintained hypocrisy, generalization, and internalized racism of the author.

you priortize the importance of straight Black male experiences because you are one

you're biased

the fact that you're parsing Black men into straight and gay is hella problematic. Black men are Black men. A Black male survived. The one that died had the blood that was needed for the sacrifice. Everybody in the show is Black so to nitpick in this way is disingenuous

Also, straight sex is also almost always "useless and time consuming" in film and tv shows

your homophobia is showing, my dude.

>you priortize the importance of straight Black male
>experiences because you are one

You seem to be using the word "prioritize" wrong in this sentence. Would you like to rephrase?
If you're trying to say I'm ranking it higher than the gay male experience, that's not true at all. Reply 285 should clear that up for you.

>the fact that you're parsing Black men into straight and gay
>is hella problematic. Black men are Black men.

For whom? If I notice people being treated differently on the basis of their sexuality, I reserve the right to point that out. I don't recall you saying this when Damon Young wrote that article about straight Black men being the "white people of Black people." There was a post here about it.

>A Black male
>survived. The one that died had the blood that was needed for
>the sacrifice. Everybody in the show is Black so to nitpick in
>this way is disingenuous

You seem to be using the word "disengenuous" wrong as well. I said exactly what I meant. What exactly do you mean to say?
Other than that, the reason Tic is killed isn't important. There are usually reasons why things happen to certain characters. There's a reason Grey Worn didn't have a dick and Missandei was a slave. Those are also the reasons black people were chosen to play them.

>Also, straight sex is also almost always "useless and time
>consuming" in film and tv shows

Except I wasn't talking about gay sex. I didn't even mention the gay sex scene in my reply, because I didn't have a problem with it. Again, it's like you didn't even read what I wrote. I said episode 5 where he's hanging out with his friends and then goes to the club. None of that was really relevant to the storyline. I noticed this because I was pretty engrossed in the story, looking for clues, figuring things out. That part of the episode ended up being completely useless. It led to absolutely nothing.

-"I Am" was probably the Emmy-attention-grabber episode, but I enjoyed the whole ride. I'm glad I came in with no knowledge and low expectations.

-I knew Ruby wasn't slick enough to slide anything of importance off of Christina.

-I'm calling it. The jet black Lovecraft monster is for sure Uncle George. The roar at the end was corny, though. I don't like it (the roar to the sky before the score and credits) in Jurassic Park or Godzilla, and I don't like it here.

i really enjoyed this series and think they did a great job at putting everything together so layered and so meticulously.

it did suffer from some stuff that reminded me of GoT (the travel times didn't really add up and they rushed the season finale which should've probably been two episodes). Also the Arowak/Yahima storyline that deserved more and the Ji-Ah arc didn't really come together convincingly in my opinion.

My lukewarm feelings on the finale aside, I was actually disturbed by that scene.

Diana is a child. Sure, she has seen some shit and experienced some fucked up things but to have her go from child to murderer is not cool. ESPECIALLY in a time where we're becoming increasingly concerned and aware with the way authority views black children as adults.

I don't care how traumatized, angry or saddened you are about how unfair the world is, making the jump to murder is a tall order.

Also, why her? Of all the people, Diana has had relatively low contact with Christina.

I see what you mean. And - I think opening things up in that way is a big giant can of worms because we're immediately in the areas of representation, media influence, self image, feedback loops and a bunch of other shit.

I hear you. I'll also reiterate my point, that for me criticism is enjoyment. Esp for a show like that this that is packing in a LOT of references at all levels. It's the kind of show that will have a different meaning each time you watch it.

I get the reasons. What I don't get is the jump. It wasnt just murder it some cold ass murder. It would make sense if there was a build up to her mental space that let her crush Christina's windpipe in a calm manner. It's the kind of cold empty killing I would expect from a child soldier.

When Diana was fighting off the cursed golliwogs or whatever they are called, she was outwardly upset.

She was outwardly upset at her mothers absence.

She was outwardly upset at the loss of her arm.

She was outwardly afraid when the beast surprised her when she was reading in the car.

And then, like some war torn country, battle hardened child soldier she finishes off Christina. And, she goes about it as if she were wrapping up some annoying chore.

I'm not connecting her last actions in the finale with list of associated traumas and effects like, loss of innocence, PTSD, fear, anxiety, anger

it's sudden and seemingly out-of-character. Its something I would have expected Letti or Tick or Hippolyta or Montrose doing.

I am pretty sure the show intended this as a negative development and I am guessing season 2 will see this addressed (and probably redemption).

I think black rage from trauma is a topic worth exploring a second season.

Especially since the entire family rallied to protect her, then the writers go and do that.

I see they’re already piling onto you here as if this show is beyond a little criticism.

if i love something then I have to understand WHY i love it, if i don't like something I also have to understand why I dont like it and be able to explain whats working or not working outside of "dunno, not good"

Even if I really love something I still have to tear it apart and tearing something apart does not mean its bad art, its just figuring out how the engine was constructed.

but I won't put too much weight on it until I see how they flesh it out in Season 2.
