Most of my amazing girlfriends have to let their black husbands shine or else they end with him cheating, feeling depressed or doing something to undermine the family unit.

Now, my girlfriends with non-black husbands, are not completely happy, but like white women, the men are on board for whatever direction the family is going in.

I think the "new black" and affluent, educated blacks still are trying to find middle ground when it comes to moving the black family forward as a team. Black women making more money could help but still the black male ego takes a hit.

Black relationships require so much healing, compromise, love, support, encouragement, spiritual connection to work. Most of us are not there. Men and women.

who complain about the shortage of "men at their level". Personally I think that's part of the problem. A lot of successful black women are looking for their "equal" so that they can form the mythical "power couple". When successful black men are looking for a mate they are looking for someone that looks good on their arm and compliments them in that way. A woman's career is not as important. But if she is also on that executive level and always traveling(pre-Rona) and always having conference calls and working late and having to cancel plans at the last minute and he is showing up to events with nothing on his arm, then the secretary or the cocktail waitress that's always ready to go may seem like a more attractive option.

Do you want to be married and happy or just have a business partner.

Plenty of good dudes who might be blue collar or make less but some people can’t be with a person who isn’t on their level.

background. If I hadn't met him, I probably would've ended up with a entrepreneur or tradesmen. I don't think it's always about the money or power couple stuff. When I dated men who hadn't been to college or weren't political, they'd always feel out of place around my friends or wouldn't put in any effort to be more informed about the things we discussed. On the flip side, I'd go out of my way to learn about whatever they were passionate about and make his friends/family comfortable. And this is what I've seen with my girlfriends as well. The exception is my best friend who's a lawyer and is married to a union electrician. They are both political and have similar passions. This is rare sadly.

Ultimately, I do think we (as black people) harbor more of those "traditional values" about gender roles in a relationship. Maybe it's the religious influence.

This has been my experience and the experiences of my Black girlfriends. It was important to me to marry a Black man and have Black children, but we've definitely struggled with my husband's gender expectations. He's one of the few brothers I know who've actually cared enough to do the work necessary to improve and keep his wife.

I live in ATL and I have a lot of female friends and my ENTIRE circle of black women have multiple degrees and decent salaries. They're also basically 100% single.

They're all great people but they're single for (IMO) different reasons that have nothing to do with their socioeconomic status. However, I can't speak for all men so I'm sure there's an intimidation (for lack of a better word) factor.
