"What are the best shoes for running you've ever owned?"

I've got a bike that makes me wanna go out and ride it daily

I'd like shoes that do the same for running, some real comfy shoes making me feel and look fast like Ussain

Y'all ever tried the Vaporflys that was banned due to the magic they work for marathon and short distance runners? https://theconversation.com/nike-vaporfly-ban-why-world-athletics-had-to-act-against-the-high-tech-shoes-131249

Anyway hit me with the good shoes pretty please

>I'd like shoes that do the same for running, some real comfy

When I was young, I used to pull on the lightest, most flexible shoes. Made me feel fast and free and easy. Shit, I logged an 80 mile week in racing flats because I was 20, stupid, and hadn't ever been injured.

And that's not meant to be discouraging. My back and knees and hips and ankles may have gotten old regardless of what I wore and I'll never regret being young and fast.

But now, after struggling with injuries forever, I'm onto old people shit. I'm on 11 consecutive weeks uninjured with a pair of Hoka Clifton 6s. They don't look or feel fast, but they get me out the door.

>Y'all ever tried the Vaporflys that was banned due to the

Vaporfly still seems really tough to get. I coach HS track, and before the spring season got nixed, I saw them pop up on kids in a few races. My dummies were ruthless about clowning anybody who ran slow in a pair of vaporflies. Just really proud of them for that.

One thing that seemed to be true about the Vaporfly, and I assume it's true about the other brands that have tried the large heel drop and carbon-plate combination, is that they don't work for everybody's stride. Doesn't mean you can't wear them - just that if you pay 300 dollars for magic, better get the magic.

Adidas seems to be mass marketing their carbon-plate offering a bit more aggressively, as I've seen ads for that at actual stores. It's the AdiZero Pro and it's a bit cheaper than the Vaporfly. Brooks Hyperion Elite 2 and Hoka Carbon X are also widely available and feature the carbon plate interior that's supposed to give the Vaporfly its boost.

And finally, this is silly but Letsrun.com has a shoe rating thing that's compiled by actual runners:

https://www.letsrun.com/shoes

Maybe they can help you find something that helps.

Awesome response, already on letsrun checking out reviews. The Alphafly dropped this summer, sold out in zero secs and its already on eBay for up to $1500 lol. It looks crazy to, but I'd love to try em. Might check for the adidas carbon you mentioned

Hoka has gotten super popular in my city this summer, seems lik everybody's rocking em. Love it when comfort beats aesthetics lol

My running background is just light jogging outside and the gym on and off for years, never entered a marathon even tho I've applied for the NY Marathon twice

Good look on the info bro, appreciate it

Best bet though is to go to an actual running shoe spot that checks your gait, pronation, etc, and consider their recommendations.

I used to run in a distance ancestor of the 2100. The next iteration of it was a huge change though. Stiffer upper made of literally different material, bulky tongue, somehow wider. All things that could have made a better shoe for a different runner, but why not just create a new series if there's going to be that much internal variation from model to model?

Though the easy solution to this is that when you find a shoe you like, buy a bunch of pairs.

In response to Reply # 6

High school boys and Nike is largely an aesthetic match, so their taste isn't 100% to be trusted. But probably about 2/3 of my upper tier runners wear those and they:

a)seem to like them
b)have been largely healthy

My very boring conspiracy theory is that Nike's never going to mass produce Vaporfly or Next% or whatever. They'll put them on elite runners and make enough to chum the waters, and then push the hell out of stylistically similar, very good, and much cheaper shoes like the Pegasus and the React.

Very cool they brought Pegasus models back though. I used to love those when I was a kid.

Say I'm likely to make a choice somewhat based on aesthetics as well - would you reccommend the Zoom Pegasus 37 flyease:

That definitely seems like whats going on, my city got like... 4 pairs and they sold out in 10 seconds. Now the same shop is advertising for the Zoom Fly 3 as a Β«Vaporfly inspired shoeΒ» lol

I previously ran exclusively in Mizuno Wave Shadow 1's.... The Wave Shadow 2's were trash to me and I depleted my source of back stock Wave Shadow 1's so I decided to try the Nike's.

Overall...the Nike's are cool....I don't know that i'll stick with them for the long haul though.

It all boils down to your running style and purpose I think...

I like to run "fast" shorter distances...and I generally only race 5k's 10k's and an annual 10 mile. ANd I generally on race to keep me motivated. I use age groups as my race motivator...I try to be in the top tier of my age group .... i'm 43...so it's getting easier the older I get lol....

The Vaporfly 4% are GREAT for races...but they are light and fast and degrade FAST...as in they literally are only designed to run a few races...like....i'm talking 100 miles is the lifespan i'm expecting out these joints at this point lol..

I do most of my training runs in the Zoom Flys which are a bit more durable, but they're also a bit more cushiony than i'd usually prefer for "fast" runs. I'm getting used to them though over the past 6 months.

Buy from brands that allow trial periods. Nike does and Mizuno does too.... most true running brands do. The key is you gotta cop directly from the brand's website or store...or go to a reputable running store.

That's really fast, and kind of rough if you're not getting them for free and winning money in them.

When I was in college, Nike made a distance spike that had permanent, non-removable spikes in them. The Jasari was an amazing shoe. I think Daniel Komen wore them when he ran his 7:20 3000m world record.

But you can't make money if you're not selling spikes and trainers to amateur athletes, or in the case of HSers, their parents. And they couldn't convince regular people to pay 200 dollars for a pair of spikes that lasted three or four races.

So they just discontinued them, even for elite racers. Which is odd because they were soooo far ahead of the game.

Like $140 on the 4% and $90 on the Zooms.
So averaged out to like $115/ pair.
I usually buy two sets of shoes at a time anyway and i had several races lined up for 2020.
But in general, my belief is spend what you’re comfortable with and also if you find something that you ENJOY running in then spend the money if it will motivate you to keep running.
The health and mental benefits are worth the cost.
People spend $300 on dress shoes that do nothing but make you look good so.....

I had the Cherry Blossom 10 mile, the GW Parkway Classic 10 mile, the 5k Fridays in Crystal City, and a July 4th 10K back in my hometown Greensboro, NC. I was thinking about a fall half marathon too.

At this point I’m kinda just goofing off....
Still lined up for the GW Parkway Classic that was postponed to November i believe.... but I might just take the option to move to the 2021 race.

I was really hoping to place in the top three of my age bracket in at least ONE of those races lol.... but damn near EVERYBODY is running now, so competition is gonna be tight come next spring I’m sure.

Any 2 cents on wether the Pegasus 37 flyease or the Zoom 3 is a better shoe?

I'm looking to run light, maybe like a 5k two or MAX 3 days a week, but I want it to be fun and comfy, like I said - it might sound dumb but I want shoes that make jogging fun, kinda like my DBS La Migliora bike with the camo handlebars has done for my bike riding *fire emojis*

I've never been a big runner and was always very slow.

During quarantine I've picked up running in a huge way and am now training for a marathon. I always hated running and here I am running 14, 15, 16 miles!!!

Shoes make a world of difference. What I've observed is if they look stupid, they're probably good running shoes. I love these Brooks and I'll wear them for a long time but I see a lot of Hokas and New Balances on the trails too.

Nike does 20-25% off sale fairly regularly, and find the Pegasus very reliable. Plus even though running is my main workout, I find it immensely uninteresting to shop for, so I tend to just have one type of shorts, singlet, shoes, and buy when I need.
I did start looking at less environmentally damaging shoes (Veja, Allbirds (lol)) but I wasn't convinced yet. Hope to have more options soon

I LOVED those shoes. I'd buy a pair right this second, if I could find one. The other was the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 15. The most recent of either of those was several years ago, when I ran. I don't run, anymore. Just not really with it. I walk quite a bit, though. Currently have some Nike Vomero 5s. I JUST ordered a pair of Hoka One Clifton 7s...very excited to get them and try them out.

Pegasus Turbo 2 - this shoe both felt good and looked cool as shit (to me), only drawback is the reviews on Nike.com states that the soles wear down fairly quick and the quality is meh. Shame cos its a good looking + feeling shoe. I'd probably go for this one if the reviews were more positive in terms of durability

React Inifity - this felt like the safest purchase. Sturdy, all around comfy shoe. Looks cool too, the girl at the store said it probably was the better out of the tree in terms of running in the city. I think I might go for this one

Zoom 3 - This was crazy to me, I can imagine this being a great shoe for someone with good technique who are looking to run fast, its probably a fun shoe to run in. My issue was that it felt sort of... jangly, in a sense. Like you could easily sprain your ankle in these, otherwise its cool. Carbon soles seem fun and I'd probably go for these if I'm buying 2 different pairs to alternate between

Only one I haven't tried yet is the Pegasus 37, it was sold out at the shop today.... Looking forward to trying them on before making my final decision, been hearing good things (including in this post)

Thanks all for good info and great tips

But years of HS, College and Professional running made it so running on concrete is near impossible w/o a lot of cushion.

I've run in ultra boosts but they last about 5 runs before it is a wrap.

Former masters road runner here from 5k to half marathon.

I don’t know your foot pronation. Do you over pronate( flat footed), neutral, or supinator ( ankle pushes out , so you land more on the outside of your foot)?

I wore mainly new balance, and my favorite shoe of all time is the New Balance Zante. It’s for neutrals and supinators. It’s the most natural shoe I’ve ever run in, because it uses a fresh foam midsole.

And it only weighed 7.5 ounces, so it was also my racing shoe, and I would use it for tempo runs and speed intervals. You can get maybe 300-400 miles out of the shoe before the midsole wears out, and that’s when it is time to buy another pair of running shoes.

Race flats: adidas adios boost
All purpose: NB Zante.

I’m not into heavy run trainers. Anything past 8 ounces is no no for me, too heavy

Most of the shoes that are being created now are straight shoe doping ( cheating). Carbon fiber plates that spring like a trampoline, allowing runners to run with no fatigue...so runners are putting up insane running times.

advances are just that....technological advances....

You still get tired... You still gotta put in the work... You still gonna have some pain... It ain't like you out here with the Will-E-Coyote ACME joints springing after the Road Runner....

That's like inferring that the NBA should still be rocking Air Jordan 1's...or Chuck Taylor All Stars.....

With that said....the jury is still our on how the extreme cushioning in modern shoes is impacting the knees and hips....

There needs to be a balance between tech and natural ability, and right now things are tipping more to the tech side. If a shoe has the ability to give you a 4 percent advantage over another with the same running ability, then that’s cheating.

β€œInstead, the analysis suggests that, in a race between two marathoners of the same ability, a runner wearing Vaporflys would have a real advantage over a competitor not wearing them.”

Kipchoge ran a sub 2 hour marathon in them, but prior to that his time was 2:03! He picked up a whole 3 mins from that shoe, when an increase in ability and time are based on a few seconds! Runners don’t get better bun minutes once they are in their prime.

If you can’t do it without the shoe, then it is not natural or real.

Those shoes look like rocket launchers

Can't quantify that 4% across the board to all athletes....

>There needs to be a balance between tech and natural ability,
>and right now things are tipping more to the tech side. If a
>shoe has the ability to give you a 4 percent advantage over
>another with the same running ability, then that’s
>cheating.

Cheating what/who? If anything....it's pushing towards a monopoly if all the elite competing athletes feel the need to buy into the newest tech that only 1 manufacturer is providing..

>β€œInstead, the analysis suggests that, in a race between two
>marathoners of the same ability, a runner wearing Vaporflys
>would have a real advantage over a competitor not wearing
>them.”

There's nothing stopping all competitors from wearing the same shoe...other than the contracts they hold with their sponsors...

>Kipchoge ran a sub 2 hour marathon in them, but prior to that
>his time was 2:03! He picked up a whole 3 mins from that
>shoe, when an increase in ability and time are based on a few

>are in their prime.

All of this is "debatable".... Off jump..... he's an Elite athlete with a history of yearly time improvements.... Define "prime"... I just saw an article about a 70 year old that broke a 6min mile record in his age group.... so the notion that runners don't get better is just bullshit...

>If you can’t do it without the shoe, then it is not natural
>or real.

Equipment selection. Period. Some equipment will be better in performance than others. All major shoe manufacturers are developing similar tech and trying similar types of new manufacturing processes. You find the shoe that works best for you and stick with it. Of course he can't do it without the shoe...that's the entire point lol...

>Those shoes look like rocket launchers

Modern shoes look wild period....

44. "And we don’t know if that 70 year old was juicing or not."
In response to Reply # 43

And hopefully you’re not talking about this 70 year old marathoner runner who got caught cheating, and possibly killed himself over it.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2019/07/05/year-old-marathon-runner-accused-cheating-found-dead-los-angeles-river/%3foutputType=amp

Juicing and cheating is highly prominent in masters running because they don’t test masters runners. So your example or analogy has zero weight.

Secondly, once you become fit as a runner, you plateau. This is fact. Anyone who follows or competes in track and field knows this. It becomes harder and harder to get faster, and this is why WRs are broken by seconds and not huge MINUTES.

Before wearing those shoes Kipchoge had never run faster than 2:03, and he had already been a marathon running for 7 years! It just does not happen. His jump in time usually takes decades as new generations come along. All you have to do is look at the progression of the WR.. Kipchoge jumped from 2:03 to 2:01 and to 1:59 in those shoes.
But can’t replicate it in other shoes.

Btw, the women’s record was just smashed as well, and it was done in the vaporfly. The woman who broke the record had never run faster than 2:18 prior to breaking the record. She broke the record with a time of 2:14 in those shoes!! That is not legit or normal, especially when her previous progression in time was a lot more gradual. So the women’s and Men’s world record were both shattered in that shoe, when no one prior could even come close to doing so in other shoes or versions of Nike’s.

In distance running, progression occurs in seconds after a runner has become elite fit. And in sprinting, it happens in milliseconds. The way that records are falling with those shoes in distance running would be like Usain Bolt running 8 seconds in the 100 meters from his 9.59 WR. It just does not happen.

This is why athletes juice and or take PEDs, because the body has natural limits when it comes to getting stronger and faster. Runners train so hard just to naturally pick up a second in time, but a runner runs in a vaporfly and instantly drops 3 to 4 mins??

Records that have been standing for years are now dropping like flies by runners in the vaporfly. Also, amateur and basic runners have reported running way faster times than they were/are unable to run without the shoe.

The problem with the shoe is not its foam, but the carbon fiber plate, which is a mechanism. And should not be allowed in any shoe because of its spring effect.

I’m not sure if you keep up with swimming, but in swimming there was a similar technology creation that allowed swimmers to swim faster and break all kinds of record. It was called the shark suit. They eventually banned the suit because it provided too much of an unnatural advantage for swimmers. This is what the vaporfly is doing and needs to be banned

Also, the alphAfly shoe that Kipchoge used to run sub 2 hours has been banned, as well as any type of prototype that is not a available for sell. Nike was specifically enhancing these shoes for races

https://www.runnersworld.com/news/amp30721631/nike-vaporfly-ban/

So as a runner, not only do you have to worry about lining up against someone who is juicing, now you have to worry about lining up against a runner who has a mechanical advantage.

In football, baseball, basketball, etc, players are not allowed to wear equipment that might provide an advantage over another athlete. This is why basketball shoes can’t have any kind of spring mechanism in them....

Hopefully running, and more than likely, will be heading down that same road. Banning those Nike Alphaflies was a start..Vaporflies should be next as well as the technology.

But shiiiiiiit....
I'm not an elite athlete, so, i'll take any advantage..... lol...

Ultimately I doubt I'll be running these Zoomflys & 4%'s for the long term because I do have major concerns about what all this cushioning is doing to my joints.... Plus I still feel faster in my Mizunos which are a much more minimal shoe.

But Brooks has the same technology in their Hyperion Elite racing shoe and i'm sure the others will be following suit soon if they haven't already.... I still think it's good for these shoe companies to toy with the technology as it's really bringing more attention to the sport and getting folks into running again.

They're great, I tried a bunch of carbon soles including the Zoom 3 and some New Balances but my feet are too narrow(?) for that shit and I felt like I'd sprain my ankle in those. Like my feet kept sliding inwards and off the sole for some reason

The Pegasus 37s are classic but still nice AF, love em

Like I said earlier, haven't strung together more than 2-3 good weeks in a row until this summer. Now I'm on week 13 of 5-7 days worth of running. I've started adding doubles once and awhile and weekly mileage is creeping into the high-30s. I miss running very far and pretty fast, but I'm going really slowly with the volume because I desperately don't want to get injured again.

And the shoes are the only things that are really different.

The one thing I'm curious about is if the rocker shape of the sole means I run differently. It wouldn't bother me if they had re-shaped my gait in a meaningful way, as I'm not going to argue with healthy results. But it took a lot of really long, stupid work in college to run the way my coach's wanted me to, and it would be pretty funny if it just whooshed away because of a pair of shoes. And two decades. And a lengthy injury history. And about fifty (now only 20, though) pounds.

I hope you have fun in them. Report back if you've got a strong view of them.

In use the running shoes for walking actually....the walking shoes I got in the past never were comfortable to me. One time I got some lightweight running shoe, maybe reebok I dont remember, and they were light as fuck and were comfort for my feet like no other. So while I use to run a bit here and there, and walk 12 miles a week, (Ive been jogging a times), running shoes are the only thing that my messed up feet feel good in really.

about 20 miles a week...but, at 240lbs, I still need a good shoe to walk in. I do keep a pretty brisk pace and try to beat my time (I go to the same place every time) and track time/steps on my Fitbit. My doc said walking is a wonderful exercise if you keep an elevated heart rate. My Fitbit tracks my average heart rate as well, so I stay in a certain zone.

In response to Reply # 0

I played ball most of my youth (HS & college), and I got used to running with the ankle support. Probably not the fastest, but a light pair of mids (the Nikes with with bubble in the sole are pretty soft) are comfortable as hell.

Gotta get real basketball sneaks tho, and not fashion kicks like AF-1s and Dunks.

The sole on basketball sneakers is a softer rubber, for the court, so imagine you'd burn through them quickly running on the street.

I imagine the old Adidas Streetball would be a good hoop shoe to run in, as it boasted a rubber outsole made for blacktop courts.

In response to Reply # 59

...I kept two pair. One for the indoors and one for the concrete.

Stopped running and balling on concrete in my mid-20s because of knee pain, so now I only run trails and tracks. Biggest problem on the trail is the grip. Flat basketball soles do nothing in the mud.

Just bought a generic pair of Nike running shoes, so I'm gonna give the low-top thing a try this fall.

OT, but using a nice leather basketball outdoors on concrete fucks them up bad, lol. I avoid concrete as much as I can.

I wasn't really a runner until then, so I don't have much to compare against.

But they were really comfortable and the lack of cushion improved my stride.

I've wanted another pair but New Balance stopped manufacturing the line. The brand you mentioned seems promising tho.

Right here...

I'm a big dude with bad hips and knees, and need a heavily padded shoe. I tried the Hoka One's and I tried these. The Fresh Foams felt equally as comfortable, at a lower price point.

I recently ran across a few pair on a clearance rack in the NB store, and copped three pair.
